    It is obvious no matter what tricks you try to justify the Hilux, GWM will win. This is the time to race it with the V6 Ranger/Amarok and or the Ford Raptor.

    The spec of GWM alpha has cut back the engine from China's 3.0T V6 to a Australia special 2.0T, I am in doubt about the towing performance of GWM alpha when you are towing a 2.5t boat going a long uphill like M1 wollongong section and M1 hornsby uphills. When your battery has gone during the climb, all you got is a 2.0T petrol. When I am towing a 2.5t boat going uphill of these places with an older GWM cannon with 2.0T diesel, I pushed the accelerator to the floor and I can barely hold 80kmh. As such, can I presume that if I was driving a new generation of GWM alpha hybrid, with a heavier body, and a 2.0T petrol engine which has 10% less torque than an older GWM cannon 2.0T diesel, will the GWM alpha stall after it used all the battery power in 20S during the long uphill climb?

    • @drivingenthusiastaustralia
      @drivingenthusiastaustralia  6 місяців тому +2

      Excellent question. Unfortunately I didn't test towing capability as I don't have anything to tow. But in normal conditions the battery level drops very quickly, and, in my opinion, it is very disconcerting as you never really know how much grunt you're going to get when you push your foot down a bit. During towing, this could become a serious issue up long steep hills as you suggested.

      There is no doubt of GWM's off road performance as there are hundres of thousands of them being tested for the last two years in China in conditions a lot worsethan Australia (e.g the famous route 318 which is basically a cape york trip with 4000m high altitute, half oxygen and below zero degrees temperature, where 4 years ago its all prado and landcruisers, these days vast majority of the car there is tank 300, 500, cannons), what I am worried about is its towing capacity as China nerfed its australian variant from 3.0T V6 to a 2.0T.

    So if you take off fast from the lights, then drive normally for 5 minutes, does the battery replenish? If so, that would be closer to real world performance.

    • @SavageTechAustralia
      @SavageTechAustralia 6 місяців тому +4

      This is correct it will replenish the battery very fast in sports mode. Unless you repeatedly smash the throttle like he's doing in the video. So everyday person is fine it's only if you are doing track days in the alpha it struggles.
      I can agree that the battery should have been bigger but in standard form for example no big wheels, the system is good and more than enough power and torque.

If it were possible to fully charge the Toyota battery then it would probably be a second or two quicker too... Except that with it not being a regular Toyota hybrid I'm guessing there's no way to charge the battery beyond what the vehicle is programmed to charge it to by running the engine... Why would you purposely drain the battery and then test 0-100? Is that a real world scenario anyway? I have not seen this done for other hybrid cars when testing 0-100s.

    • @drivingenthusiastaustralia
      @drivingenthusiastaustralia  6 місяців тому +5

      @@milkoowen6800 It certainly is a real world scenario. During regular driving this battery depletes very quickly, going up a decent hill for example. It’s gone. And then you find you have little power left until you drive downhill for a while.
      The difference with this and other hybrids is the electric motor. In the GWM it is overly powerful (78kW), so it drains the small battery very quickly and then there is a big contrast in performance.
      In a Toyota Camry hybrid or Hyundai hybrid or whatever, the battery is usually very small as well but the electric motor is not powerful at all. So although the battery still goes flat quickly you don’t notice the difference in performance anywhere near as much. They are a lot more consistent.
      In this case, there was a 4 second difference in 0-100 performance between 40% battery and 90%. That’s huge. I’ve timed a Camry hybrid repeatedly and it returned very similar results, well within 1.0 second each run, regardless of the battery state.

    Dont fall for Their tricks. Buy the hilux. I made a mistake buying the GWM. It blew its headgasket and the dealerships want to charge 80% the price of the car to repair. They dont want you to repair just buy a new car every time anything goes wrong.

      @@lhaneyleofa4558 even if it was my fault having to write off a vehicle because of a blown head gasket is ridiculous, I have an old 1996 Toyota conquest that I have no problem fixing and getting spares for. The GWM also losses it value like crazy. From when I bought the car second hand it has lost another 40% of it's value in 4 years. Go buy the GWM but I will from experience not touch the brand again.

      @@lhaneyleofa4558 If this post can help one person not make the mistake I made I will be happy. Also if GWM did not make it so hard and expensive to keep the car on the road this would not have been a problem and the cars market value over time would not fall off a cliff after a few years.
