    Marvel did Scarlett so dirty. To have Scarlett be in the MCU from almost day 1 and her to not have the first female led film is an absolute insult, not just to her but to women in general imo. We didn't need a brand new overpowered character to swoop in and take the spotlight, we already had great characters that were so under utilised who deserved attention way back when Captain Marvel was still thick and had big butch energy before the MCU stripped her of everything that made her unique. Wanda is the most powerful character, period, and Black Widow deserved the top spot instead of trying shoehorn some bland, cardboard cutout of a character into the lead role. I'm tired of seeing women who have worked hard for years being stepped over by whoever's new on the block trying to grab the spotlight. We should be elevating the women who are already there.
    I completely disagree with there being too much 'masculinity' with female led films though. There really isn't, from someone who is actually quite a masculine woman Hollywood has barely even acknowledged we exist. Just because a thinly framed woman has a bit of muscle tone and a practical haircut doesn't mean she's masculine at all. Woman can actually be thick with bulging biceps, just look at so many of the world's top athletes like Simone Biles or Brooke Ence. Now those are strong powerful women, yet nobody in movies looks like them. We just get slimmed down versions so that they're not "too masculine" and cut rate action scenes because they don't bother to recruit women who can fight either in front of the camera or as a double. (just look at how awesome the action was when people like Carano and Rousey were involved, why can't we get more women like that who aren't douchebags?) We just keep getting second rate crap with pretty faces and I'm so sick of it already.

    Laughed so hard when you spoke about character development for Natasha being not good within the MCU, then showing that awkward character moment in "Age of Ultron". And YES! The mind control aspect threw me off as well. It was far too convenient. Completely agree that they could've explored moral complexities in the film and possibly throughout future MCU productions as well. When Winstone's character said "using the only natural resource that the world has too much of....girls" I cringed so hard in the theatre that I was so glad I had a mask on. This was awesome Jennifer!

    Nailed it! I'm I'm the same boat when I was discussing the movie with my friend on our podcast. Fun and entertaining but felt lifeless at the same point when it came to action moments and the horrible villain. Shouldve been released years ago. Here's the real question for you. You had a lot of really good talking points with the movie, and I can even agree with them. Yeah, it sucks that Natasha didn't have too much of an arc & Taskmaster fell by the wayside, but aside from those issues, the movie kicked ass.
    Speaking of Taskmaster, I'm also OK with them changing up the costume/Apparently they couldn't give the suit the iconic skull face due to religious reasons in China so, go figure on that. I just laughed a bit when I first saw the suit because it reminded me a bit of Lord Zedd from MMPR and that's not a bad thing since Lord Zedd was AWESOME.
    Also, Jennifer, MAJOR points for reviewing the movie in costume.

    You didn't exactly say this but holy moly would this have been a fun limited series. Flashes back/forward to 90s Ohio, Red Guardian's adventures (I'm dying to see him step on a shield and it not flip up onto his arm), how Melina became more of a true believer and actually inside the Red Room with Yelena.
    Hearing about a Black Widow movie, I was hoping it'd be an exclusive flashback to meeting and being recruited by Hawkeye. Could have really really put a stamp on her decision in End Game and act as a lead-in to the Hawkeye tv show. Atomic Blonde but with at least one archer...

    In most of the comics the widows aren't sterilized because becoming pregnant would be a distraction, but as a side effect from their enhancements, another thing the movie doesn't do, but would explain a lot, the enhancements basically boost their physical abilities, resiliency, immune system, and slows down their ageing allowing them to stay young and beautiful longer, all of this makes it impossible for them to have children, except for one version of Black Widow where she has a son with Captain America.

    Great video! I would argue that there was an attempt at giving Natasha an arch. At the beginning of the film she is resigned to living life alone and on the run. By the end of the film she has admitted, at least to Yelena, that she did have genuine love for her fake family despite the complexities of that situation. She then allows herself to try to repair the Avengers and I think it gives reason to here leading the team during the blip. Was it the most well told arch? No, but there was at least an attempt.

    I totally agree that it's release now feels weird. Even if there was no pandemic and it made it's original date it would still have felt a bit late, character wise. She was already dead and this movie didn't do anything fundamental to her character that *needed* to be told. That being said, I think it's going to feel so much better and relevant in a chronological rewatch of the MCU right after Civil War.

    The Charlie’s Angel reboot is a good example of the Me Too movement not producing good movies with the message, the movie really should’ve been released in 2017 it’s different and it’s a decent spy movie, the reproductive joke went on longer than it should’ve, Taskmaster has decent fight scenes but the character itself isn’t that good but the movie is a solid 4 1/2 out of 10 for me

    • @JenniferMcD
      @JenniferMcD  3 роки тому +1

      You’re totally right!! The new Charlie’s Angel could have been really good, but instead was super pandery and a direct product of the Me Too movement. Yet when anyone tried to criticize it, they were called misogynistic and as much as I love Elizabeth Banks she is part of the problem, she literally said if that movie failed it’s because men don’t want to see women in action movies.. which is total BS… if a movie fails it’s bc it’s a bad movie. And there are more women than men in the world so.. even if all women went to see it, it wouldn’t “fail” but even all women didn’t go bc.. we’re tired of being pandered to and tired of seeing trash movies

    Is it sexist to say that female lead superhero movies are not profitable if that’s true? The only well received movie I can think of is the Wonder Woman and that was in 2017. In 2014 what female superhero movie we had? What you want to say Cat Woman or that Electra one were incredible successes? I am on board with saying these movies failed because they are trash but to say they didn’t fail and whoever said they failed is a sexist is a big stretch.

    I really enjoyed Black Widow.
    Everything I hated about Captain Marvel I hated is fixed here: the snappy one liners in Marvel they felt forced are used properly here with Yelena delivering most of the humour in the film.
    Nat is far more interesting than Carol. Danvers has no personality, whilst Natasha had depth and character.
    Honestly it’s one of my favourite Marvel film. As female led superhero films, Wonder Woman was better, but Black Widow is a good flick that entertained me more than the last few Marvel outings (except WandaVision, and Agnes saved that).

    The whole mind control aspect really destroys the movie. If you want to make the theme be male power over women, then you can't just have that as a tool, its silly and cheap. You could have elaborated on the whole "they took out my womb" speech from ultron, phrasing it not as "i can't have kids, so I'm a monster", but as "I have no agency, even when it comes to my own body, which means they take away my humanity, therefore I become less than human, a monster."
    And then you could show more and more ways (psychological and physical) that these women are being stripped of their humanity. Maybe even show how these dehumanizing tools / pressures / power structures exist outside of the Red Room. You could make it into a pretty good satire honestly, but I guess Marvel/Disney are too bland for that.
    But I have to disagree, I don't think this movie will be remembered, at all, in like 2 years.

    I enjoyed watching the movie, but after it was over in an odd way I respected the black widow character within the MCU more - before seeing this film? The origin story spun here homogenizes and really deflates the cool (dark edge) she had going for her before this thing came out. Its also a shame that the TaskMaster was basically reduced to the same character depth as Bain from Batman and Robin (oof).

    All these movies seem to be a response to some social issue or movement. They can never just be allowed to stand on their own and telling a good, character driven story.
    Imagine if Hollywood had had the same approach 30 years ago. Then we’d have never gotten masterpieces like Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List or Beauty & the Beast.
    Just imagine if Back to the Future had been made today. It would definitely have been a movie about a young transgender female - prefarably black - befriending a woke old democrat, going back in time to change the perspective of her biggoted father and his hetero normative, racist word view. Or it would be about how oppressed women were in the 1950’s, or how the mother was about to marry a white dude - when she really should end up with a man of color.
    And Oscar Schindler would have been portrayed not as someone who overcame racism and antisemitism, but as a nasty racist with a white savior complex who ”helped” jews because of his reversed raciam, or because it made him feel good about himself.
    Nothing wrong with making a movie about social issues, but all movies that’s being made today has become dated before they’ve even been released, due to everything being tied to identity politics, MeToo and/or BLM, and so on.

    I agree with you about halfway. Black Widow to me was one of the best MCU movies. But yeah, I see the "wind out of the sails" idea. But I also agree it will definitely age well. But I think you overlooked some very key points. As a photographer myself, I sell a lot of digital design and color work. But I absolutely love simple black and white. Psychological facts say that it leaves more to the imagination and engagement with the thought process of the human brain. As an art. That's what you want. This movie was deep and left enough unsaid for us to figure on our own (Taskmaster only needed one line). Don't tell the audience every detail. Let their mind flow. Hence, you made this video. Love or Hate it, Black Widow has people talking in detail. 💯 Successful movie.

    • @johnconnell7538
      @johnconnell7538 3 роки тому

      One of the key points I think you missed is that this is the first major post pandemic film to be released. The MCU is known for major action sequences that wow fans in IMAX-3D. Some people are coming back to the theater for that experience. Others are content at watching at home. A longer movie would be fine for Disney+ but not for the mega screen. The editing and pace of the movie tells a tale of two types of release. A little gets lost in that. But it's enough left unsaid. We get all of the pertinent details and are left to our own devices. It's a B&W portrait to me. Loved it. Love the discussion around it.

    • @JenniferMcD
      @JenniferMcD  3 роки тому

      I full heartedly agree to not tell the audience every detail! It can be so annoying when a movie just spells it out completely and leaves no mystery. Had they given her a different line, maybe I would feel differently.
