      Just a bananas decision to me. You can get a compact Canon. The lack of shutter angle, lack of false color, lack of NDs... the A7SIII is a vloggers camera.

    Good points - I own a C100 M2 and I didn't go for the C200 because it was still only 4.2.0 8 bit! I have not used the C200, But I really thought the face detection had been substantially improved in the C200 instead of sucking like the very limited face recognition in the C100. Disappointed to hear of the focus deficiency. Also I agree with the stability issues and no IBIS. I've tried shooting with several IS lenses and the improvement in stability handheld is marginal at best. I personally don't like even shooting with a monopod unless absolutely necessary as I feel the images still look amateurish. The IBIS in most mirrorless cameras is remarkably good - can approach gimbal-like appearance in run and gun. However the built-in ND's, XLR audio with decent pre-amps, cooling fan, and layout of controls are a deal-breaker for me - hard to go back once you've had these features.

  • @nightdonutstudio

    For run and gun, GH5 might be the best because of its IBIS, still better than a7sIII in active mode. I know it sounds regression. But I really feel GH5 is only one feature away from a perfect mirroless camera that is auto focus.

    • @scottmckenna
      @scottmckenna  3 роки тому +5

    I’m in the same position as you Scott. I bought the C200 and I’m considering switching to the A7SIII as well. Apparently the autofocus hunts like that in lowlight situations because the dual pixel autofocus on the cinema cameras is different from its still cameras. Lately because of the semi unreliable autofocus I have really been practicing on my Manual focus. Plus racking and pulling focus on Ef lenses is way easier than the focus by wire Sony lenses. Either way whatever works for your workflow is the most important part. The A7Siii is an amazing camera and we are living in a great time where cameras are constantly improving every year!

    • @scottmckenna
      @scottmckenna  3 роки тому

      We are great at manual focus because we got super used to it with the gh5s. Problem is, it limits the depth of field you can shoot in certain situation for interview stuff if you have to worry about them Moving. The a7siii I has insane autofocus.

    • @StevenFreitag
      @StevenFreitag 3 роки тому +1

      I’ve got the C200 and haven’t had the AF trouble you’re having. It is a bit quirky menu wise in that you have to choose “face only” vs “face priority”, and the focus tracking option is not obviously available either. I think from a UX point of view the stills/hybrid cameras did a good job of merging these categories and really do all the work for you - you just tap to track, and that holds the object or face.

    I've got a C200 myself and I understand all these remarks. Having to asselble it before use must be a pain, I never disassemble mine at all but simply keep it ready to go in the bag with lens, display, shotgun mic and everything attached. If fits perfectly even with the handle on in a Dr 3 bag by Sachtler.
    Regarding the autofocus issue during interviews. I've found that it only happens when filmning in log so I sometimes use Wide DR to get around it. Still a sacrifice to make though.
    IBIS would be nice so is having a camera with built in ND's :)

  • @krishnayalla676
    @krishnayalla676 3 роки тому +2

    He will be back to the canon side lol. All kidding aside, I totally understand your decision to move away from the cinema body setup to a smaller body form factor. However, I do think you might have left alot of doors unopened with the rigging options with your c200 setup. If you strip away your canon handle setup you can squeeze down to a significantly more manageable form factor. The setup speed increases dramatically as well when you use low profile nato/QR attachments for the monitor. Finally with IS, a more versatile zoom lens with IS would have probably sufficed for the shooting style you mentioned. As a lover and owner of the 85mm 1.4 IS, it's a great lens but not nearly as flexible as a a zoom with IS. Also outside of these points, the financial cost of transferring systems with all new glass can be painful.

    Sold my C200 too for the same reasons of building up/ down and transporting.... I hated that about it.
    I went for the C70 over the A7Siii, primarily for the built in NDs. Happy so far but do miss the viewfinder.
    For handheld run and gun, I kept my GH5... and I don't think I'll ever get rid of it until the GH6 comes out.
    Its not that I don't want an A7Siii (I do), but the lack of built in ND's and an IBIS mech that's not as good as the GH5 made no sense compared to the cost of switching systems.
    Also, the R6 is actually a lot better than I think people give it credit for... its amazing in low light, the IBIS isn't bad (no match for the GH5 though) and the AF is pretty rock solid.
    Combined with the EF>RF adapter with variable ND filter, the R6 is actually pretty great. Its not good for long takes though I agree.... but then I'm not going to be hand holding it for that long, and if the shot is locked off I'm going to use the C70.
    It seams that it was much harder for you to part with the GH5 than the C200 (a sentiment I completely agree with), and I wouldn't be suprised if Panasonic win you back with a GH6S that does real autofocus, great IBIS and internal RAW. There's just something about the GH5 that's irreplaceable to me.

    • @namelikeanyother885
      @namelikeanyother885 3 роки тому

    I agree with you and sold my c200 for the same reasons. In addition I found that the 120 fps slow mo was “how did they ever think this was ok” mushy. My AF wasn’t as jumpy as yours, but I found it unreliable in a different way. It just wouldn’t even try. So when filming myself I would think it was focusing on me but it wasn’t and then in the middle of a take it would start working. Usually if it found me, it stayed locked on though. Either way, it sucks not to trust it...particularly when that’s one of the reasons you buy Canon. I also found the menu system needlessly cumbersome navigating with the joy stick. I wish you could touch the screen. Also, mine arrived dead on arrival and that was a HUGE headache because BH doesn’t treat those returns the same. I had to spend hours on the phone with Canon to get the return authorized and THEY had to handle it with BH. It was a mess and not a great start. I guess I should have seen it as foreshadowing. Lol.
    Anyways, I’m better off now and it seems like you are too. Great video, Scott.

    I totally get it. I've got a Sony FX9, and it's WONDERFUL, but I relate to the slow build time, lack of stabilization (you can do it with gyro in post but that's a long workflow), and just missing the small form factor. So odds are I'm going to sell it and get a couple FX3s. I'll probably finally let go of my GH5 as well if the IBIS is close to the GH5's level.
