Although, you made it sound like the C200 offers both full-RAW and RAW-Lite (perhaps that wasn't your intention, but that's how it came off) - the C200 only supports Cinema RAW Lite, and I don't think it actually offers any other options as far as compression rations for RAW. Unfortunately I don't think Canon will ever allow 10-bit recording on the C200 (besides RAW Lite), as that would cannibalize sales of the C300 mkII and mkIII. It's a nice camera, and the compressed formats are honestly still really good and would be more than adequate for any corporate video, most short films, and most documentaries. And if you're doing a longer-form narrative piece, you have RAW Lite and hopefully a dedicated DIT personnel to deal with those massive files. The C70 always seemed to me to be like a C250/C150 of sorts, where you do get all the options you could want for recording formats, but not RAW. For those that really like the CX00 form factor though, the C300 mkII has been going down in price lately due to the mkIII being out, and for a lot of people that is still the perfect value. The Panasonic EVA-1 is another excellent option with 10-bit recording and even ProRes RAW external recording, if you can put up with some minor inconveniences (like the LCD).
@@ezelinkmedia7228 it doesn't have continuous autofocus (only one-push autofocus, which is useful, but certainly limiting in some situations). but if you're looking at cinema cameras, autofocus likely isn't a priority anyway
Nice video. I think the mention about compression ratios for Raw is a wee bit misleading though. Cinema Raw Light is their ‘light’ version of Canon’s older Cinema RAW format as seen in the C500mk1 and C700. External recorders were used for monster data rates of about 25GB/minute(!) of 25p 12-bit and 42.5GB/minute of 50p 10-bit. The equivalent frame rates on C200 are about one third and one fifth the size of these respectively, but even then they’re still massive files at 7.5GB/minute, and there’s no options to adjust this like on other systems such as Blackmagic or Red. If Canon could offer higher compression ratios of the Raw Light format it’d be a game changer 🤞
Is the C200 a massive upgrade over the C100 mk2? besides the 4k obviously...I've seen a few 2nd one for a low price...Just wondering-is the 4k internal (I will never use Raw) in the C200 almost as good as the C70? and is it a lot better than the HD footage coming out of the C100mk2? Thanks
I would say the 8 bit 4k in the c200 is very similar to the c100, not a significant upgrade unless 4k 60p is important to your clients. Truly, the c100 outputs a very impressive image that looks very similar to the c200 8 bit. That said, I’m finding more opportunities to shoot in raw than I had envisioned when I purchased the c200. Shooting in raw is the first time in my 17 year career that I’ve looked at my footage and been completely satisfied with it. The image is so detailed and the highlight/shadow preservation shouldn’t be understated, it’s amazing to film in high contrast environments and not have to concede to clipped highlights or shadows as I previously always had. I rented a c200 back in 2017 but didn’t truly appreciate it until buying a copy last month. Much better than I expected. -AW
