    Your journey arc from a little pizza baker to doing this now full time. The editing, the production quality is top notch. Whether I agree with your picks or not you’ve always opened my mind to other authors to explore. Cheers on the 90k

    I’ve found when it comes to rating books:
    - thrillers- the ending can move it up or down an entire star.. usually most are 3-4 throughout then the ending can call it for me
    - cont rom- usually just here for the vibes and I’m a lot more generous with my stars for the most part
    - fantasy- it’s all about the characters for me, obviously the plot is important but if I finish and I just love the characters.. 5 stars! lol

    Yes, the ending of a book does affect how I rate a book, especially a thriller. My least fave thing in a thriller is when the villain spends pages and pages explaining why they did what they did.

    Nature of disappearing was a 5 star for me! It definitely wasn't the strongest in the thrilling aspects, but I mainly loved it for the atmosphere. I do van life so it was a fun read for me.

    I try to go along for the ride and not speculate too much. But I don’t like when everything is obvious and the protagonist is oblivious.

    i am one of those people who can always figure out the end of books and movies. so i don’t mind if a book is predicable as long as it’s executed well!

    I knock a rating down by 1 star if I don’t like the ending. Riley Sager’s book The House Across the Lake was 5 stars all way until the end, so I rated it 4 stars. And Lucy Foley’s book The Paris Apartment was 5 stars all the way until the end, so I rated it 4 stars. I still encourage everyone to read those books because they’re so good all the way until it wraps up.

    I read The Last One and These Silent Woods on your recommendation and loved those books, so I was kind of shocked that you DNF'd The Chamber and 2-starred The Nature of Disappearing. I was hoping for a great Will Dean follow up because The Last One was a banger. Oh well...

    Brilliant video, I am the same, if a book ending drops out then it will affect my final rating. I remember reading one thriller and I worked everything out in the first 50 pages and I just had to leave it and come away from it and that was a Steve Cavanagh book.

    The part about the c sections feels kinda invalidating?? Idk how to describe it. Like women already get shamed for having c sections and I think the book saying that it’s not supposed to happen is not it. I’m sensitive about c sections anyway because I was born from one but yeah (and i definitely relate to my zodiac so)

    • @sophiecarbone4977
      @sophiecarbone4977 Місяць тому +2

      I agree! I was also born through c-section so am definitely a bit more sensitive to it. That part of the book definitely shocked me… but I am also not into astrology much at all sooo I don’t mind skipping this book. But that’s just me😅

    • @gabbyreads
      @gabbyreads  Місяць тому +1

      I was also born from a c section, and that’s why I found the conversation so fascinating haha, I definitely connect to all the signs in my chart so I don’t think the c section would change anything. But I can see how that conversation seems kind of odd and invalidating 👀

    • @kae_christine5449
      @kae_christine5449 Місяць тому

      I had one personally and I agree at first I was a bit irritated by the idea of it working against fate (especially with how much invalidation c section mothers already face from others) , what helped for me was the character that did have a position against that stance and didn’t really entertain the idea. So it wasn’t really a firm stance the book spelled out or anything it was more of a conversation starter and I could see how that may be an interesting thought/conversation for some

    I'm more lenient on predictable endings in mysteries and thrillers than on ridiculous endings. If I enjoy the writing and it's predictable, I feel they connected plot points well enough. If it comes from out of nowhere and I'm surprised because there was no way to guess, that's when I'm more likely to rate it lower.

    I feel the same way with audiobooks! It just makes my experience better and I find I can listen/read a book almost every other day whereas if I solely read physically only, I could probably barely get through a book unless it was amazing. If I have headphones in though, and read along while I listen, that works! It’s my ADHD lol, I need to be doing two things at once or my mind and body can’t function I believe 😂
    Also, your dog is precious! I’m a newer sub so I haven’t seen them before. Adorbs!

    Also I saw a video by a horror movie reviewer and she mentioned how there is much higher expectation and bar for horrors and thrillers. Since if people aren’t scared or they predict the ending then people automatically think it’s bad. Because we don’t do the same thing with say a romance or even a fantasy or historical fiction. 15:13

    The ending of a book to me is the best part of the book and most the time I get it right, but it does affect my rating if the book ends in a crazy way that’s just not part of the book I feel I’ve rate it low and I like the author it’s a letdown. it also can affect my mood for reading.

    The ending for a thriller for mi does determine my rating for a thriller like for mi to give a thriller five stars a thriller ending has to shock mi make mi gasp n there has to be seeds planted through out the book for the plot twist to make sense to mi bc if ur gonna just give mi a plot twist n not make mi think that this person could have done it or at least some type of hint then that will determine my rating just like when I finished middle of the night by Riley sager The ending of that book just wasn't it I gave that book 2 stars 😂😂 and the chamber by will Dean that books does sound good might pick that book up

    Reading physically is still being productive because you’re actually using your brain with critical thinking instead of just passively listening which is kind of lazy tbh. So to insinuate otherwise is stupid.
