Everytime i come across a short saying "books i highly recomend" and ghis or fourth wing are on the list i press the "don't show this chanel again" button
@@headcaptainyamamoto7015 I actually laughed out loud at this-but YES! I haven't read Fourth Wing yet, but whenever I see Powerless-I've come to recognize the details of the page edges-I run as fast as possible because I already know that individual lacks some kind of taste.
@@Hdiembhshusyk not everyone reads for a literary masterpiece they read bc they had fun or some people love to hate books that doesn’t mean they don’t have taste
I’m not saying it’s bad. I’m saying it’s been done before and it was done better. Enemies to lovers? Where. Point it out. Be specific. I don’t mean the last handful of pages. Readers screaming and kicking their feet? I was too! Because I’d been hoodwinked. Your main character can hide her possible mind ability? You mean Bella? Our characters are gonna fight to the death? But our main girl is torn between two guys? Katniss, Pita Bread, Gale, how y’all been? Two different classes of magical and non magical? Yea, I read Red Queen back in 2016. I didn’t need anyone to give it a new cover and try to sell it to me twice. This Book = Not It Yes, I am saying it’s bad.
@@whitneywest3538 whats really annoying about the enemies part tho is that she had enough reasons to really hate him like. he kills people like her!! so why wasnt she acting like it? its one thing when its not really enemies because there isng a good reason but when there IS a good reason and the author simply choose not to use its so much more annoying
SAME it started as a *loose* 4-star bc I thought it was entertaining but the more I thought about it I dropped it to a 2-star (and even that was generous). Obviously books will overlap and be similar, but most of this book was just a blatant rip-off of others.
@@renata374 YES! Enemies to Lovers insinuates that they are ENEMIES, Aka, THEY WANT EACH OTHER DEAD! If there isn't a genuine attempt on the others life, I simply don't want it.
I swear this book was literally red queen and the hunger games copy and pasted with every single trope in existence mixed in. I won’t lie I ate it up, I enjoyed it while I was reading it, and I understand why people love it but I just really struggled to get past how similar it was to red queen and hunger games and I feel like you could definitely tell that Lauren Robert’s wrote it when she was 18.
@@Yash1-zn6oo lol no, I really liked the Hunger Games and Red Queen as separate series, I just didn't like the fact that powerless was a copy of them. You should definitely read the hunger games 😭😭
I think that if Lauren pivoted Paedyn’s relationship and made her and Kitt the true enemies to lovers in the next two books it could actually be interesting. Instead she’ll just stick to what the readers demand and it’s so obvious she’ll end up with Kai
I don't know what it is in my brain-but after hating Powerless and hating Kai for his contributions to genocide, I would enjoy seeing Kitt as the love interest! I was recently drafting something for school and felt like the MMC had to be the basic "Tall, dark, and handsome" guy, but ended up altering it because it's so overused and boring! I wholeheartedly find nothing intriguing about Kai at all.
I feel like I remember Lauren Roberts started writing this as like a fun project to put all her favorite tropes into one story and then she decided to publish it… idk I was interested but not really anymore
I think her writing it for fun is great, including plot pieces from other stories at that point It's fine. The one thing I hate is that she actually published it. So many other authors will take their old stories, make them unique and un-plagiarize them, rewrite the story, and THEN publish it. I don't understand why she couldn't have done that...
i just finished reading this but at what cost 💀 i was so bored from the get go but because of all the hype pushed through… i do agree the end left me with enough questions that i am still considering picking up book 2 just to see what kind of happens even though i’m probably going to rate this 1 star 🤡
I thought Powerless started off good and lost steam as it went through (started to feel a bit like a copycat of other fantasy books, but not done as well). I also thought the ending with the big revelation made no sense. It was much better than Reckless though, which I found very repetitive and pretty boring 🙈
Such a fun vlog! I loved Powerless so much personally. It reminded me why I love fantasy. I’ve also read Powerful and Reckless. And Reckless is much more character driven than plot driven, but I loved it just as much as Powerless and I’m very excited for Fearless to come out in April. 😊
Something that rubs me the wrong way about Powerless and the discussion around it is the lack of acknowledgement of the main love interest doing/being complicit in genocide. People were real quick to condemn Molly X Chang's book for having a similar flaw in the love interest, but Lauren Roberts' book hasn't caught nearly as much flack. Both of these books are similar in genre, target audience, and popularity. I don't think it's a coincidence that Lauren Roberts is a white woman and that a woman of colour, once again, is being held to a different standard
i'll be honest i knew next to nothing going in and haven't heard of the other author's book. but that does seem to be a recurring theme in publishing, so sounds like a fair criticism
I've seen people pointing out the genocide, but it's definitely not front and center of the criticism the way it is with To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods. All the TGUWG videos seem to make that part of the title or thumbnail, whereas most Powerless criticism videos put comparisons to Red Queen in the thumbnail
@@whiteraven562 Isn't that because, for most people, it's not about the genocide with that other book so much as it's about the colonizing/oppressing(and specifically with deliberate connection or parallel to real and actual people groups rather that wholly fantastical races/kingdoms/whatever) like on a broader scale? Still, probably a fair criticism/dichotomy to point out, anyhow.
I haven't read TGUWG but powerless got me frustrated because the main guy who is supposed to be sympathetic and likeable was actively supporting a genocide and killing off innocents and it's never brought up in a discussion. It's just forgotten about.
This was a fun journey! 😄 I really like the Hunger Games, but I don't enjoy YA with a prince as the MMC. It's just hard to feel sympathetic toward him and want him to get with the FMC if he is privileged af and usually tries to kill her and her people. So this is probably not for me 😅
I actually ended up really liking this book, but I completely agree with your sentiments about the book as well. 😂 The way they describe their feelings in their POVs are so over the top and dramatic and like you said, completely unearned. I also am really interested in Kitt now as well, and even though I'd love a twist where she somehow ends up with him I think she'll likely end up with Kai. And yes, definitely need more characterization! I didn't quite understand Paedyn's actions and her willingness to trust some people, but not others.
as someone who does not annotate books, this book had me highlighting and making editing notes all over it. lauren was let down by her publisher, but more so i was shocked at overwhelming positive reception online given how plain the editorial issues were. reading is my fun little hobby but i still we should do some critical, if not at the very least reflective, thinking about the books we read.
I had my mom over and we talked about the book-or more specifically Reckless. After looking at all of my notes and the small things I caught due to my pettiness and general ability to read she said "you should be an editor." No mom, I shouldn't, but Lauren needs an editor. I can't believe a big five publishers allowed this to go through checks. If someone were to have proof read it, basic readers wouldn't be catching simple mistakes and spelling errors.
i haven't. i used to care more about that sort of thing, but frankly there are SO many common tropes employed especially in YA that you can draw comparisons between like any 2 books you pick up. i also see that a lot with romantasy... people claiming someone ripped off SJM. usually untrue haha most books just follow what is popular
I mean.... I guess you could cognitively or logically dislike killing because you understand that it's bad or because you don't like being forced without personal choice in the matter, and yet also still experience involuntarily adrenaline or arousal during the act of doing so anyway like because you're a sadist or something.
