I just saw your video on "5 Things You Should Never Do In An Automatic Transmission Vehicle". It was informative over all and the channel as well. Keep up the good work.
I used the POR15 rust preventive paint on my old Mercedes W126 around 5 years ago now. Brilliant stuff. No rust whatsoever has come back through where I used it. It just stopped it dead.
Masking tip. When masking off the machined surfaces (raised bosses specifically). Forgo the razor blade. Apply tape extending beyond all edges. Take hammer and tap along all edges. This cuts the tape leaving a perfect edge. Much faster with better quality. POR. Great when it works. I have much better results using automotive base clear, or even enamel. You can also more accurately match the sheen as I don't care for the gloss POR produces either.
These videos are finally becoming relevant for me. I've probably watched this 3 times, but now that I have a MK3 it needs to be cool. This'll be useful for making a 16v look good.
An engine shop painted my MK1 diesel block for free. I was beautiful with one caveat, it was Chevy orange. Since it matches the orange paint job on the rabbit truck no harm done. Oh, BTW his video was more satisfying than playing with a fidget spinner! Great work! :)
Good tip if you don't want the core plugs painted, instead of taping them coat the inside of the plug with a heavy grease. Paint just wipes out of there when your done.
This tip works if you're spraying the paint. When applying POR15 using a brush or sponge, you can't risk touching the grease with your brush and then dragging that everywhere else and also contaminating the paint in your can.
just wait till the engine is ran and the block heats up a few times, the glossiness will fade some. I painted my 302 in my datsun with that por15 engine enamel and has held up very well compared to spray paint.
I just ordered a few measuring tools to we can be sure we catalog as much as we can. I am out of town this weekend and most of next week. I am hoping to start that process next weekend. I have all the parts to assemble other than cams. The cylinder head is ready to go I am not totally sure if I am going to paint that or not. I have the "aluminum" color to paint it with, but it was cleaned extremely well, and I am not worried about rust. From there is is about the small details of the reassembly. If I just did the job, it would be a simple 1 day job. But since I am documenting it, it will take longer. :)
Red is a minimum 20 to the wheels, obviously other mods (such as stickers, underglow lights, exhaust tips, etc) will increase the gains of the paint. Hondas will always see 10% more gain from paint and stickers than any other make.

I degreased my big block with Castrol Super Clean then just sprayed on the POR15 color coat and it worked awesome. 4 years later the engine still looks like the day I did it.
Good vid , thanks for the effort, ive bought the whole range and trying to gather faith for once someones made a paint that will stay on engines, ive got mixed messages from por suppliers wether the rust preventative will handle the kinda heat that always removes paint between the two central exhaust inlet ports on a cast iron 350 chevy intake manifold. Some say just use the metal prep is enough. really appreciate anyones hands on experience to this answer. cheers from New Zealand
POR15 is good to 450 degrees. Good for the block but not heads. If your block temps reach anywhere near 450 degrees, you have other problems. for the heads, POR15 has a high temp paint good to 1200.
I was wondering if you're going to paint the oil pan and head/valve cover a different color so you can detect leaks. great video and keep up the great work
you could always take the engine block to be hot tanked or pressure washed... we have a local shop in our area called Lordco Autoparts and they offer hot tanking and pressure washing tanks to thoroughly clean parts etc.
You still have to do the exact same prep. Might reduce the degrease phase to a single cycle, but it is still a required step. Never trust anybody doing anything when it comes to paint. POR will give you more reasons than you can dream of as to why it did not adhere.
even eAsier..when engine is out and broke down. have block dipped to remove everything. machine shops normally do this anyway. then assemble everything. mask holes off. prep and paint it. no chance of crap getting onto engine.
I learned some great tips from this video. One question do you think I could do this with the engine still in my truck? I'm sure not as thorough but if I grow patients like you have it's not an impossibility. Anyway thanks for sharing.
@@HumbleMechanic I’ll definitely do that! Im assembling the engine tomorrow i should have a few videos of the engine assembly if you wanna check it out! Also id love to have you as a subscriber!
How about bare alloy engine parts Charles? Intake, Water pump, Timing cover etc. Do you need a High temp Etch Primer, or will the VHT Flame Proof Primer do? The can does say 'all high heat applications'...
im pretty impressed that the entire kit is only showing as about 65 dollars (us) on amazon. and if you are doing an engine of similar size to the vr6 you were playing with, id bet you could almost do 4 engines worth. ill be using this kit for sure when i do my aba build(s) because of the cost, and the relative ease of the procedure. by the way, thats that little 6-popper going in when you put it back together?
I painted my engine with the black gloss POR-15 rust preventative paint, but did NOT apply any topcoat. The POR-15 is apparently damaged by exposure to the Sun's UV rays, so in an engine bay, I figure there's no Sun, so the topcoat shouldn't be needed.
I guess your machine shop just used a block washer? it just uses heated water sprayed by jets as the block rotates on a turntable. back in the 80's, when I went to tech school and used my local machine shop, they had a huge tank full of water and lye, heated almost to boiling. we submerged all the parts, block, heads, oil pan, timing and valve covers, intake if steel, for two or three days. it stripped off EVERYTHING, paint, grease, you name it. all that needed done after was the usual scrubbing of the oil galleries with solvent then a good wash with tide detergent and hot water, then blow dried with compressed air. I don't think shops use the lye solution anymore due to environmental reasons.
You might do a tool review on garden hoses!😀. Seriously I am new to your online videos but I am seriously addicted. I've been binge watching for the last week or ten days.

Hey humble machanic I have a mk6 gti with a really bad screeching noise. It happens when I accelerate sounds like it's coming from the back of the motor near turbo any ideas on what that could be ?
Well a few reasons 1) I am not too worried about fluids leaking. Every gasket will have been replaced 2) If I do end up with a leak, finding oil leaks is actually pretty easy. 3) Worst case I can add dye to the leaking fluid and trace with a UV light. I hope that doesn't read like I am being an ass about that question. I am really not. it was something I considered for sure. Either way, most of what you see in the video will be totally covered. A lot of the times the gloss goes away when it fully dries like house paint. Your just seeing the shiny liquid before it evaporates. I like to do a test paint on something and wait for it to dry to see how its going to really turn out. My mom freaked over a red paint that was too glossy in her house after the painters left. I told her to wait before calling and yelling at them about using the wrong paint. Sure enough by the 2nd or 3rd day the gloss was gone. The more you know eh?
