Thank you. That's my goal, obviously.
I agree. Very scientific and fair as most of the other review have different degree of personal opinion. Really feel u can trust him totally.
I am gonna get the Tamron, it`s a steal for how good it is... you doing a great job, thank you!
It’s definitely a strong value.
Simply wonderful. Love how you combine detailed technical with real world considerations. Bottom line - 4 great lenses - main limit will be the user :)
Very true
Based on your review I purchased the Tamron SP 85 f/1.8 Di VC, I was fortunate and found a near mint used copy of the lens (paid $410 US via eBay) and it is impressive. I also own the Tamron SP 35 and 45 f/1.8 Di VC lenses and I think the 85 is the sharpest of the three. Dustin I learn so much each time I watch your videos, thanks for the hard work you put into it!
I’m glad they help you out.
That's decided it, Tamron for me, replacing my Canon 1.8 EF for my wedding work so big thanks Dustin. Your reviews are super helpful when people are about to purchase.
I think you’ll notice a pretty big optical upgrade
Absolutely, I’ve been shooting a 135 F2 L and 50m 1.2 L and 24m 1.4 L but my 85 was the weak link. Looking forward to seeing what this does. Of course I’d love the canon 85 1.4 is but I think when the Eos R version two comes out with duel card😳I’ll be going full mirrorless and probably with their native lenses too. I’ve had the above gear for ten plus years and it’s been bullet proof bar the 50m which is a very moody cantankerous lens..lol but still love it. cheers Dustin
@@markgriffin65 aloha! How did it turn out for you? Are you happy with it? I'm planning to buy a lens with minimum 85mm focal length, but I have serious trouble with picking one.
@@staLkerhu hey, I’m delighted with it and so also bought the 45mm 1.8IS too. I’m using them with my two new Canon R6’s and both are performing brilliantly. Considering the price they are an excellent choice in my opinion. Best of luck.
This is the best lens comparative ever. It was a lot of work.
Why yes it was ;)
This is great. It's like the O.K. Corral for 85mm lenses.
LOL
Excellent series of videos on the 85mm lens offerings. Very helpful summary at the end matching performance against requirements. What I find fascinating is how both the Sigma and Tamron lenses performed ; it will be interesting to see how these two companies develop over the coming years.
Both companies have come so far in terms of their quality.
Just switched from Canon 85 1.2 ll to 85 1.4L IS and I have to say I am very disappointed with chromatic aberration. I can see a little bit improvements but expected much more. Other than that the lens focus is extremely fast and spot on comparing to older version
I was both surprised and disappointed by that, too. It was worse than I expected.
Excellent round up Dustin, was looking forward to this final no frills comparison, you've covered everything really well hitting the nail on the head with specific uses for each of the lenses just for those who are still sitting on the fence on which one to buy. But the Tamron is the unsung hero here, it has competed so well against every other marque lens here and the cheapest also!
I agree. As a "bang for the buck" lens it is pretty exceptional.
It certainly is, but that Otus really does rock! ;)
Not exactly bang for buck, but absolutely exceptional.
intense showdown... lots of efforts in your videos. well done
Thank you!
Hi Dustin, again a great and very useable review, thank you very much for this info.
My pleasure.
Great showdown at this comparison of 85 mm prime lenses. I think you have made a very good choice with the recommendations for which use which lens is the right choice. Thanx a lot for the amazing work Dustin.
Thanks for the feedback.
Brilliant series, Dustin, but also maddening. I simply want all of them.
I had the Canon 85L 1.2ii for several years, and before that the Sigma 85 1.4ex. I recently got the zhongyi mitakon speedmaster 85 1.2 for the A7R2, and absolutely love it. Maybe you`ll get a chance to try it out some day.
There’s all kinds of lenses for the Sony ecosystem that I’m interested in trying out...in time!
After watching both videos of this showdown, I so agree with you, and I would also add the same for someone like me who is juggling between videos and photos. In this scenario the image stabilization rules, so it's either the Canon or the Tamron way to go. Personally, I'd go with the Tamron mostly for budget reasons, but for sure when I'll grow out the Tamron, the Canon will be the reasonable update.
Great review!
Sounds like a reasonable plan.
A Tamron lens you can buy used for 285 is as good as a 4500.00 zeis lens. When it comes down to prints I don't think you can tell a difference. I did a repair video on a Tamron 45mm
I wouldn't call it as good by any stretch of the imagination, but there probably isn't a $4000 different for most shooters!
@@DustinAbbottTWI Agreed, I am sure a 10k portrait or headshot session may justify a 4500.00 lens.
Amazing review!!!
I’ll be going for the Tamron ,had the Sigma but mine had focus problems
That's not unusual, though they are getting a lot better.
Thanks for the great showdown of the rendering!
My pleasure.
Fantastic recommendations Dustin. Another great analysis of some great lenses. Aaand some stellar photos. You have a great artistic eye.
Thank you very much
Just love your channel Dustin. Always look forward to your videos! Best types of reviews that started guiding me towards getting some amazing glass lately after being really well informed. Wish more channels were like yours. I am strongly considering the Tamron 85 1.8 DI VC or the Tamron 70-200 2.8 DI VC next simply because they have VC which absolutely is a killer feature to have on any glass. I have the tamron 35 SP VC and oh man that vc helps. I tried getting anywhere near the same slow shutter speeds with my beloved Sigma 35 1.4 Art and I just could not get it as clear as the tamron without motion blur. Keep it up please.
My pleasure.
Excellent analysis of lenses. Your channel is great
Thanks for the kind feedback.
Nice work again!! A very comprehensive and fair comparison.
My pleasure
I appreciate all the reviews and comparisons you've done on the various 85s. this is the focal length that I had been most indecisive about, and now I'm confident that when I do buy one, I'll be making the best decision for what I need.
I'm glad to hear it.
Thank you for this great review, putting together all of these 85mm lenses really helped. I went for the Sigma 85mm and wow it is sharp the image quality is superb.. Thank you again and please keep up the fantastic work you are doing it is appreciated.
I'm glad you enjoy your lens.
Very interesting how the shape of the face differs. The Otis and the Sigma slim the face, canon too and the Tamron much less so. Thanks for the through comparison!
Glad to help out.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I would love to see a comparison of more lenses on a person's face (with bokeh behind). Say all the good 50mm? 35mm? :)
I waited for this episode, good review actually I think the canon 85mm 1.8 also good lense and gives very sharp result @f2 as tamron ,but in my case as an outdoor and studio shooter I think the canon 85mm 1.4L IS is best suited for me ,thanks again
Enjoy!
One thing I didn't get out of this fantastic showdown is the OIS benefits in terms of stops and comparing the Canon to the Tamron.
of course. that is covered in your other video! Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 VC Full Review + Image Quality Examination
Just got the tamron today used for 800cad. Wow, it is sharp and punchy. I love the VC. 1.8 is enough for portrait .
Definitely. It's a very nice bit of glass.
@@DustinAbbottTWI You and Christopher Frost are definitely the two most professional reviewers out there. Keep up the incredible work!
Christopher is a great guy
Your lens reviews are the best
Thank you
Dustin, thanks for verifying my observation regarding the Tamron and skin tones. It just seems a bit off usually.
I’ve gotten a lot of great portraits with it, but I do find the others in this group produces a little nicer skin tones.
I bought Rokinon 85mm F1.2 and it is fantastic lens. Manual focus is easy with EOS R
Amazing comparison! Bravo this took time and work! Very extensive also. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I sometimes hate being a Nikon shooter because of you Dustin. You give the most concise and well explained reviews if not the best here. But sadly you only cater for Canon. Still, I value your thoughts and opinions greatly, I can use your knowledge when choosing third party lenses that go cross platform, sad that you don’t cover Nikon though :(
I get this kind of comment often, but I only have so much time (and money). I can't invest in Nikon, too.
Dustin Abbott, My loss. If I had known of you before investing heavily on Nikon, truly I would have gone Canon just because of your expertly advice you give on lenses and gear. Thanks again for you valued input Dustin.
Yeah, guess we're just stuck with good old Angry Photographer.....
Oh dear god
Dakman DotCom nooooo thanks
Whilst Dustin is a great reviewer, Nikon is a good choice for photographers still. The Nikkor 85mm f/1.4G is a very good 85mm, lighter and smaller than most of the options mentioned, it is sharp, handles vignetting well and whilst it has some CA, it is pretty good. The only thing I don't like about the Nikkor 85mm is the lack of contrast, which put me of the lens.
Of course as a Nikon owner though you have the option of the Nikkor 105mm f/1.4E, which does everything the Nikkor 85mm does but better, particularly contrast, it also has better bokah than any of 85mm around and to my surprise the lens renders quite similar to the 85mm Milvus.
Another great lens comparison. Not going to say I would want to go over to Canon but it is always interesting to see what the competition does. :) I am still happy that I bought the 85mm Milvus when it first game out. It isn't the perfect lens, by any means but I still love it as a portrait lens, it is just a touch softer then the Otus but you still get the nice rendering.
The Milvus is actually a bit sharper in the corners, a bit less sharp in the middle. An amazing lens.
a damn good review as always
Thank you
thanks dustin!.. i made up my mind, i well sell my 85 1.2 and get the 1.4!.. :)
Enjoy!
Another great Video!! Dustin, Have you ever thought of doing a video on traveling with your photo equipment on todays airlines. With all the security, I for one would like to know how to keep it save and ideas on a good bag or hard case for getting through the security lines.
I've got a playlist on bags and carrying systems. You'll find a few options covered there.
Another great review. Thanks Dustin.
You’re welcome.
Nice comparison , Will we have 5D IV vs A7r3 comparison?
We definitely will. I've done a lot of it already.
excellent!
Thanks
Great comprehensive comparison! Thank you for that! It would be very interesting for me how the Sony 85mm GM is competing against these nice lenses in terms of sharpness, bokeh quality, micro contrast and so on! I know it's belonging to another camera system, but it would be very nice to see some detailed comparison!
Different focal length, David, so that won't really be a part of this comparison. I will probably do an 85mm comparison down the road, though.
I ment the 85mm 1.4 G-Master lens. A comparison to the other lenses would be nice.
Great review! Maybe you could compare more portraits since this focal length was designed mostly for portrait photography or even wedding photography. I think especially when using a flash the results could be different from those shooting under nature light. Besides the issue of the flash, shooting in studio and outside could also make a great difference. Maybe try these comparisons some day?
I'm afraid all of these lenses have gone back to their respective homes. This was my final coverage of them for now. BTW - it's -20 to -30 here most days - not very good portrait weather
Have the tamron...i am so happy with it
It’s a really excellent lens for the money.
Hi Dustin, fantastic pictures taken by Otus and Tamron! I think these are your favourite lenses and i discovered... you're a really great photographer! :) Thank you for such a detailed review. I wonder why you have chosen Otus and not a Samyang 85 1.2? Both are manual lenses, but - as you have said - Samyang has probably the best renderition out there + the fastest aperture 1.2 + it's several times cheaper than Otus.. (i wish you compare these two in such a detailed way :)
I didn't have access to the Samyang at the time of the review. I brought in the Otus more to compare with the Canon than to compare it specifically to other lenses.
Thank you for a great comparison. As a Nikon shooter, I still think the evaluations are very quite valid. Was leaning towards the Tamron and will now only compare it to the Nikon.
Best of luck to you.
Honestly the difference isn't enough to justify the price of the zeiss. In sharpness the sigma is very similar to the Otus and it's a hell of a lot cheaper
There are other advantages than sharpness, but the Otus isn't for everyone. For those who want the best, however, it is that.
what did you film with Dustin? the quality looks so nice!
Sony a6500 + Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DN lens - it's a great video combo.
Pretty happy with how my Tammi did here.
The Tamron is a very underrated lens. It does pretty much everything quite well. I'd love to have a similar lens from then in a Sony E-mount.
I have same shirt :)
I will buy a new lens Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM❤️😍📸🎞️🎥 Thankyou For This Sir
Interesting. The one 85mm lens that wasn't a part of the comparison.
plz do a 135mm show down including samyang lens also
I might in the future if/when a new 135 option comes out. Right now there are so many new lenses to review that I don't have time to go back to a group of lenses that I've already spent a lot of time with in the past.
great video, I'm glad you didn't forget about the Milvus 85 and Samyang 85 XP. I your opinion in terms of rendering and bokeh, which one do you prefer? samyang 85 xp or the milvus 85?
That's hard for me, as I didn't shoot them anywhere near the same time. Sometimes your memory gets clouded by what you were shooting at the time. I think the Zeiss has more contrast "punch", but the Samyang has really stunning bokeh and rendering.
Thank you for the very good and detailed comparison.
However, while I certailny understand the need for standardisation of test conditions, I still think it's a shame that 3 out of 4 lenses are capable of f/1.4 but were only tested up to f/2.0 for the sake of having in the test one lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.8.
???? If you watch through the series where I compare image quality f/1.4 is very thoroughly documented.
Dustin, would appreciate if you could a similar Shootout for the 135mm focal length, comparing the Milvus, Sigma ART, Samyang and the Canon.
Also, just a query: How much of a difference in absolute image quality would be there if a Lens is used on a APS-C Body as compared to that on a Full-Frame.
Thanks and Happy New Year..!
That probably won't happen until a new 135mm option is released. I spent a lot of time with different 135 options over the past two years already, and there are some many new lenses to cover.
No link to part I in description
Hi, as usual great review. A question, I have lots of glass (since my first cameras : Canon EOS-1 I think and a bit later the Minolta Maxxum 400si which I still have with the 35-70 lens :), and the EOS 3 ) , I use Canon (I rarely switch bodies, maybe 5 or 6 in total all these years, currently have the EOS R), my fave lenses are the EF 180mm L macro (which I think is still the sharpest Canon EF lens),EF 100-400mm II L ,EF 35mm f/2.0 and the EF 50mm L f/1.2. sold my EF 85mm f/1.8 which I didn't like (too clinical for me) and want a new one , I was planing on the EF 85mm f/1.4 because of the IS and the bokeh I like according to photos I saw , and then I came across this video. Zeiss is too expensive , Sigma is not my cup of tea, the Tamron surprised me in your video, I still lean towards the Canon but that Tamron does look interesting . My question is: If I look at my most loved current lens , it is the EF 50mm f/1.2 it's not because of distortions, sharpness or focus speed , it's because it has it's own feel (I wouldn't swap it for the RF 50mm either) ,so does the EF 85mm f/1.4 have something special like that? or should I consider something cheaper but also good like the Tamron (I guess now days both Sigma & Tamron make more reliable lenses compared to the older days) ? Thank you.
I would say that, from what you describe, that the 85mm F1.4L IS might be a good fit for you.
Hey Dustin,
The Tamron lens will not work on the EOSR without turning of the Peripherals
in the lens calibration settings. You get big black rings. i'm getting the lens dock today and
see if the firmware update works. Just wanted to make you aware, if you didn't know. Excellent videos as always.
That's been the case all along with the lens on Canon bodies (though I believe a firmware update did correct that). It doesn't have corrections for the lens in camera, so that does create an issue. I had covered that back in the review of the Tamron lens itself.
Dustin Abbot
Ok, I did not see that, my apologies. I just wanted to let you know in case. Very appreciated! This lens seems to be really nice with the R. Would you do a comparison with this Tamron VS the RF85? Maybe it’s a waste of time, but it sure would be interesting to see if it’s worth 2200 more or so.
Hi Tom, I'm afraid not. I have limited access to the Canon RF lenses, and I've already spent time with the RF85 and had to return it after my review.
Dustin Abbott understood! I was curious to ask your opinion on portrait lenses. I was really interested in the 135L F2 or even the 100MM F2. I don’t recall seeing a review of either lens with that by you. I know they are older designs. I keep hearing a lot of people say that that is the portrait lens to have. But then I know there’s that 105mm Sigma lens that people call the Bokeh master and I did see you did a review on that. There’s just so many options. I am a huge fan of background separation. Maybe I should be trying to 135. I know this video has nothing to do with the lens I just mentioned but you seem extremely knowledgeable so I just wanted to run that by you :)
Good show. Did you use the same brand/type of filter for the flare test?
No filter. I've pretty much moved away from protection filters as I find they do add extra flare artifacts in backlit situations, which I tend to often shoot.
Thanks a lot for your review Dustin, just a quick question, you've mentioned the Samyang XP, great, what about the Samyang/Rokinon EF 85mm AF 1.4 ? any feedback on this one ?
I haven't used that lens yet, but I can say that it is a different optical formula than the one mentioned here.
Damn I'm so stuck between the Tamron and the Sigma, I could put the Tamron on my gimbal and use it for video too but I have the Sigma 18-35 1.8 and LOVE the images I get from it so it makes me want the Sigma. So tough. Opinions?
For general purpose shooting I really, really like the Tamron. I think you will be very happy with the images it produces.
Such a great body of work, as with all of your work. Can you please help me out here and tell me if I’m correct in assuming that at 7:04, the Canon appears to slightly have a shallower depth of field compared to the sigma? I was just looking at the lines of scripture, focusing on where the focus plan started and ended with both images. If this is true, then (a) I’m even more impressed with the Canon, and (b) how does this difference impact the tests run between the two? Thank you sir!
I did find the Canon to have slightly larger bokeh highlights as well, which speaks to a slightly longer focal length (the Sigma is a little shy of 85mm).
Very nice comparison. But if one can't afford the Otus, which other Zeiss 85mm would you recommend?
Milvus. The recommendation is at the end of the video
Yeah. i picked that up after I had already hit enter on my post. Oops!
All good! Enjoy!
Thomas gave you the right answer, for sure.
how do you manually focus with a 5D Mark IV - I read they took out the ability to insert a focus screen
because I want to get the Milvus 85 after seeing your review
I find the best technique is to focus past your subject with the appropriate focus point selected, then slowly come back toward focus with the shutter half depressed. As soon as the focus point lights up and you get the beat, pull the trigger.
Hey Dustin what focal length are you using to film yourself?
I'm using the Sigma 30mm f/1.4, so with the crop factor it is around 50mm.
PS This video was filmed with my spare. Otis 85mm F1.4 lense.
LOL - I wish! All these lenses were loaners.
Does anyone use canon eos-m (aps-c)? With one of these lenses or something similar?
I search something higher than my ef-m 18-55mm that will give 135mm (full frame corrisponded).
Thank you.
I actually found the Canon EF 85mm F1.8 a decent pairing on EOS-M. The size isn't terrible, and the results were pretty good. All of these lenses are considerably larger.
@@DustinAbbottTWI
Thank you.
Which one did you keep for yourself ?:)
I previously owned the Tamron (and still do own it). My most desired lens from the list would probably the Otus (though I would now prefer the Otus 100mm F1.4). My current favorite affordable 85mm is actually the Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 for Sony.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I really appreciate your response. I originally wanted to get Sigma but it seems that the lens may be heavier than me ;) So I will be getting 85 from Tamron thanks to your favorable review. Is there any Travel lens/body combo that you may suggest ? ( canon mount ) Best greets !
I just wish the Sigma had IS.
Sigma hasn't yet embraced IS in ART series primes. Maybe that will be in the mix for the second generation of some of these focal lengths. It's a big deal with high resolution bodies...or you switch to Sony and use the MC-11, where they work quite nicely.
Dustin Abbott I have a 5DSR ;-)
Let's hoped Sigma puts its OS in a future 105mm f/1.4 ART lens.
That's tough, then. You will definitely face motion blur risk at even moderate shutter speeds.
I got the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM recently. Next year I'll get a 85mm so hopefully there something for me then.
