- In my first video about Hot Roots, • What Are Hot Roots? , I talked about common formulation mistakes that cause hot roots.
I left out one of the most common causes... And what to do about them!
I got hot roots so I am dying my roots darker to match the rest of my hair. I’ve been searching the internet to fix this problem but now I’m here at this video. There’s not much information on this out there
Thanks for watching! I'm glad it was helpful
Im doing the same tomorrow ! Did it worked for you ?
@@angelaggarrido7816 yes it did work. I went and bought more hair dye and developer and picked out a shade that matched ends of my hair which was darker than my roots. I dyed just my roots so it can match the ends. I was happy I salvaged my hair at home especially since salons are closed right now.
@@caitlynbaxter6260 thank you for your response!!! I wasn't sure if it was going to work and was doubting so much even though I already have the dye. I'm happy that it worked for you :)
Hello! May ik how long u kept the dye on your hair?
Thanks for the first really good explanation of hot roots that I have found. I have also read that the extra heat from the scalp causes "over developing" and is another contributing factor. I guess I don't totally get why "overdeveloping" would lead to a lighter color roots. I am working with graying roots new growth and the rest previously dyed hair.
Just thought your channel and absolutely love it. Love the aesthetic, the simplicity, originality, no music, just all information. Absolutely amazing. Subscribed instantly.
Thank you for watching! I hope you are not too disappointed when you discover that some of my videos do in fact have music 😁
I love how you explain everything in simple terms and I enjoyed your video.
I have dark brown hair with grays. I just do my roots at home with a level 4 box dye but I often get hot roots and I’m not sure why. Very frustrating!
Great video. Reliable and good information
Thank you!
So if you find the darkest color and decide to dye it all that color where do you start? Ends or roots?
Usually the roots. Often, only the roots since, in the context of this video, they are the lightest part that you are color matching to the rest. Thanks for watching!
Hot root still happens when you dye it brown regardless. 20v brings warm tones.
I finally got the answer to my problem! Thank you so much for this video!
Thanks for watching!
I had a partial foil on top but didn’t like how bright the blonde was on my natural dark hair so I toned it and it turned my roots orange 😭what do I do
I'm so sorry that happened to you. If someone came into the salon with your problem, I would do a shadow root/ root smudge. Somewhere close to your natural level. A neutral, not an ash because an ash tone could turn the highlights a funky color.
I really enjoyed it , thank you.
I have layers on layers on layers black box dye on my hair I dyed it today loreal paris twilight bold a blackish blue color the results ended up with my roots brownish blonde and the rest remained black ...I don't understand..I used dark hair dye why my hair turn so light???? Please let me know why this happened...if you know the answer.....thank you have a great night 😊
I wonder if the color was labeled as a gray coverage color. They often use a higher peroxide and can cause warmth. Also, rinsing the color before it's fully oxidized could cause this. It's hard to tell without really seeing it
I have hot roots, I colored them darker but it won't work. Still have hot roots and they look even more brassier, Used a 10 developer and a 6a color. Any advice?
So we can NEVER make hair lighter at home? Or at least not evenly throughout without hot roots? I had called a boxed hair dye company that answered this question by saying that their “more natural” hair dyes only lift hair about 1-2 levels so that in order to go lighter I needed to go from a 4N to a 7N. So was this a lie? Lol 😂 Am I going to end up with a crazy mess in my already suffering hair?
I didn't say that. Coloring hair darker is fairly simple but getting hair lighter can be complicated, especially if it has already been colored. Hair dye doesn't remove hair dye, so if someone wants to go lighter than the dye that's already in their hair, a different method must be used.
No matter what I use , it'll always pull red. 🙄. I've tried ash browns.
Most often, when even ash browns yield a warm result I find that the formula chosen is lighter than the natural color. For example, if your natural level is a dark brown and you have chosen a medium or light brown, your hair will get lighter and warmer but not light enough for the ash to be effective. A level 6 ash or double ash will never cool down a level 4 warm. The pigment is not dark enough.
My hairdresser did exactly this. She previously made me hot roots, and I came back so that she fix it. Then she colored my roots a lot darker for 2 or 3 months, and then I wanted one color throughout my hair and she again made me hot roots. She asked me if I want to color my roots dark, I said no- there you go again. And now I’m trying to fix it, and I first tryed to darken my roots, but I guess the dye wasn’t dark enough. So I washed my length with color lightener and it lifted to orange while my roots are more grayish yellowish. They kind of seem to be on the similar levels, but differ in tone. I want to darken my roots and cancel off the orange in the length and I can’t trust hairdressers here, because they are not used to the Caucasian hair. And every time I go to a salon, I don’t know what the result is gonna be 😭 do you think I could darken my roots with darker toner and the length with the lighter so that they look better? Or do I need to really make all my hair very light and then do the toner? 🥺 I don’t want to bleach my hair to white.
The desired end result is medium ash brown or natural brown.
Sounds like you are in a tough spot. I'm sorry you are having such a tough time with your hair. At this point it's kind of trial and error to correct. I like to start with the least destructive/darkening option then work my way darker if needed.
I agree that you should not try to lighten it any more. There are so many physical factors that go into coloring that without seeing and feeling your hair I can only make an educated guess. Ash tones tend to appear very dark. If you can compromise on wanting ash and settle for a neutral your hair will appear lighter than it would with ash.
If it were me I would begin by toning with Light Neutral over it all. And then re-evaluating. At that point if it is all still warm but mostly the same color you can tone with a light ash brown. Once the ends have reached a good tone, if the roots aren't good you can use one level darker on the roots only.
Any time you go from warm to cool/less warm your end result will always look darker.
Hi! I tried to die my hair burgendy with a 20 developer and had previously died black hair and only my roots lifted and are red, I re died my hair black with 20 developer and it did not work and still have hot roots. How do I fix this?
Thanks for watching! There are several possibilities, the most likely is that the red that appeared at your roots is so intense that the black had a hard time completely covering it. Also if you continue to apply all over, the ends can look progressively darker, always leaving the roots lighter by comparison. I would try applying the black on the roots only with 10 volume. Good luck!
How about bleaching the darker hair and creating an "ombre"? Would that work as well?
I like the way you think. It's another totally viable solution. Probably the hardest on the hair but can be accomplished with care.
What about: even with professional color; Lanza, Redken, etc...I apply straight 6N, 10v, and the roots seem hot? You can't tell if it lays natural but if I do a pull back and you see a part you can surely see? Baffles me. I can't use ash of ANY kind, I'm about 60% grey and I grab DARK AND ASHY if I use that:(
Gray can be tricky because "hot roots" isn't always what's actually happening. Either your non gray hairs are darker than the color you are depositing or the color isn't fully depositing on the grays. Often the overlap of the retouch is enough to balance everything out.
@@CosmoDad well that put a whole new spin on it, but makes sense...thank you
I have a natural black hair but I colored it with Ash grey thin it turns out my roots orangy and the rest of my hair is brown to black in color how to fix it please
I'm sorry your hair didn't turn out the way you wanted it. Depends on what you want. Least damaging to most damaging you have 3 options. 1. Pick the darkest color and color everything else to match. 2. Lighten the ends to match the roots and tone out the warmth. 3. Lighten everything to achieve your original goal of ash grey-Not reccomend
@@CosmoDad hey when should I wait to dye my roots black again
hey I have hot roots on my black hair can I redye it black on top a week after I tried bleaching it
As far as damaging your hair, you should be fine to recolor. If the hot roots are red or orange you should be fine to use the black. Avoid coloring over the hair that's already black because it could get even darker and will be harder to remove later if you should choose
But color does lift color. There’s peroxide in permanent hair dyes and it always lifts the colored parts too!
It can, but not reliably, and not as much as untreated hair
I have dyed my virgin black hair to brown. I used loreal permanent hair dye. But I end up having orange roots with just little bit of brownish shade in rest of hairs. My hair are no longer one shade instead they are looking very weird. Now what should I do. How to now remain dye from roots. Could anyone tell me do I have to redye my mids and ends hairs with lighter shade (as it is safe for my hairs to again dye soo soon) or should wait for thus colour to fade on roots. Could anyone tell me after how much time will colour fade from my roots. I am sooo depressed. Please help
At this point the dye has lightened your natural hair and deposited as well. Even if you put another color on top, it's not likely to make it any lighter. You have 3 options. 1. Color the roots darker to match the ends or just go all over darker, 2 try a color remover like Color Oops and then follow with a color to even everything out 3. Lightener: have the ends lightened so you can match the roots or get all over highlights. I'm so sorry you have had such a bad experience
@@CosmoDad thank you for telling
👌🏼👏🏼
I put clear hair color to lift a little bit then put 7.11 to make it match my ashy hair but the 7.11 dye only lifted my hair more ..
What should I do to make it darker and greenish ash
Hard to say, without seeing your hair or knowing what brand color you are using (Schwartzkopf?) The general rule for achieving ashy results is to lighten 1-2 levels lighter than your target then tone down with an ash.
@@CosmoDad thank u so much for responding and Sorry that i didn't mention what level my hair was lol my bad 😅💔 . My natural hair is almost level 3 the clear lifted it to level 6 (used it with 30 developer) then the 7.11 lifted it to level 7 without turning ashy so i guess i should use a level 6 now to tune it down , didn't know about this until u said it thank u so much 🙏🏻🌸
Thaaaank you
i dyed it dark red, but i got hot roots, i still have hair dye product left, is dying the ends again without touching the roots so i can get the same color as my roots going to fix it??
Don't do it! Now that your hair has color in it, reapplying color will only make it darker. You've got to either color the roots darker or use a color remover on the ends 😑
@@CosmoDad oh i didn't know that, thank you so much!
@@CosmoDad one more question (I'm sorry) does waiting for it to fade (the roots) is going to help too? (i used permanent hair dye)
Unfortunately no. The roots won't get any darker than they are now, on their own.
@@CosmoDad okayyy thank you
I had a copper color but the upkeep at the salon was too expensive so I dyed it like an auburn color but my roots are darker then the rest of my hair lol
is your natural hair color darker than the copper?
@@CosmoDad yes it’s like a darker brown
I figured. It's kind of like painting on 2 different color canvases. The lighter colored canvas(copper) showed up lighter than the darker colored canvas. Honestly this is usually best case scenario and can often look pretty natural or al least intentional
@@CosmoDad it honestly 100% does look good kinda like a shadow root in a way at first it was bugging me but then I kept getting good compliments so i accepted it now haha
Thanks for the video. So i dye my hair red with Loreal highcolor magenta, but i ended up with hot roots. If i dye my roots with the same hair dye, just the roots, should that be enough? Thanks again!
I forgot to mention that I used a 30 vol developer with the hair dye, so, instead, should I use 20 vol developer, for the roots?
@@paolacarrillo I saw that you shouldn't do the same color, you need something darker. Also I saw that you should use 10 developer, if I find that website I'll send it to you love.
@@loriell1996 hey girl! thank you so much 💟
Hey what did u end up doing? I’m literally in the same situation except i dyed mines red should I use the magenta in just my roots?
