Stranded in the wilderness and hanging off a cliff!! Deep woods search and rescue mission!

  • I got a very poor connection call from a father and son who were stranded in the snow in the Ochoco National Forest without enough supplies to make it through the night. After getting some rough directions on how to get through mountains to their location I loaded up the off road recovery Jeep and headed out. The night turned into a wild adventure involving stuck friends, the local sheriffs, the search and rescue team, and even a wife in a mini van who was determined to make sure her husband made it home for bed time.

This reminds me of a trip up Mt. Scott (Douglas County, Oregon) in the late 80's. My bf and I got stuck; had no option left except to walk. As we got around the corner below where we were stuck, we came across another stuck vehicle. As a group, we were able to get that vehicle out, and head down the hill. Before we got down out of the snow, picked up a couple more people who were also hopelessly stuck. Ended up driving back into Roseburg with like 6 other strangers in some random Blazer or something.
Quiet ride back. Everyone was exhausted and cold, grateful for the ride out, but also feeling mighty stoooopid. Not much said.

Nobody pays attention to how many right or left turns or how many intersections. They SHOULD, but they don't. I worked for Weyerhaeuser Timber Company many years ago, and my boss really knew the road system. One night I was in a section that I had never been in, and it was foggy, and I was lost. I called my boss on the radio and told him I was lost. The FIRST thing out of his mouth was, "where are you at?" I replied, "Roy, if I knew where I was at, I would not be lost!" LOL I would just drive around and when I came to an intersection, I would describe it to Roy. Within 2 intersections he knew where I was at, and sent me to where I needed to be.

Most people turn around by going forward and multiple back and cut. Instead, pull to one side of the road, cut the wheels all the way and BACK UP. Your wheels cut a much tighter turn backing.
Try this on a two lane road with shoulders. Backing allows you to make a complete 180 in one motion. No more cut and turn, cut and turn.

This happened several times and all so amusing until the sun started to set and the temperature dropped by 15⁰F almost instantly. All I had was a 2'x2' piece of sheet metal to dig with; thank the Lord I had it. I was in a valley and had to go forward. I walked and pa cked the snow all the way up the hill and finally got out. Once out I couldn't stop to inspect the property and had to come back a few days later with my son. We got stuck 6 or 7 times but had fun and got to walk the whole property. People, always keep in mind tires burn for HOURS and give off a lot of heat! So many families have frozen to death needlessly because they didn't know this. Burn the spare first naturally, then you can warm hands while you get the next one off the vehicle. Sacrificing a tire or even all 5 and wheels is a heck of a lot better than dying or losing limbs to frost bite!

Not that I don't believe you, but hours? Seems unlikely, and also fun stuff to inhale while you spend 15 minutes burning rubber.

@@Llama052 before the EPA went crazy we use to put a tire around a stump and pile brush on and light the tire it would Cath the stump and brush after the tire was burned up we'd just keep piling brush to warm up while cutting firewood and hedge posts

They were in a forest. Lots of firewood, even if you had no axe or saw, enough branches can be broken off to keep a fire going for many hours. Your tricks could work for a while if you were in a place with no trees, but only for a while.

Watching from Scotland and just down from main ski centre and highest A road in UK. We get snow each year and often close the snow gates to prevent folks driving over the pass when they shouldn’t. BUT each year we have folks still coming up the road in vehicles that shouldn’t be out in the snow PLUS just because you own a 4x4 truck doesn’t mean it’ll perform in the snow. If you don’t have winter tyres on it your gonna get stuck. There’s times I just lose it with people coming up to sightsee the snowy mountains and we are trying to clear the roads with our tractors - I usually have to pray for forgiveness afterwards for what I’ve just said to these people 😅.

You did some really good work there Sir, well done, but has your vehicle got a badly cracked windshield? If it has, if you were in Britain the Police (same as your Sherriff?) would charge you as it would be against the law. Don't you have similar laws? If so you were lucky The Sherriff didn't complain. You spoke about the Mini van. We didn't see it properly, but was it one of the older British Mini vans? If so Minis were particularly good in snow and the old rear engined Fiat 850s were like mini bulldozers. Thanks for showing us your specialist work- I loved the tracked vehicle in your other video. HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Compliments to the sheriff that easily maneuvered his way back and around to turn himself around on the trail. We live in Minnesota and that is something everyone that has grown up with rear wheel drive can maneuver. It's not an easy thing LOL once you drive forward and feel like you're not moving anymore you quickly stop then back up and try it again and eventually you pack a trail and can get out. I have packed a trail out to the fish House on the lake in the front wheel drive car going back and forth to pack the trail over and over again without getting stuck. Now I have a truck with 35 inch tires that won't get stuck with a snow plow on the front.

Good recue video I went to north Dakota one time into a snow storm that was terifing cars and semi trucks sliding of the road laying side ways beside the road and there was no exit for about 30 minutes strong winds blowing of the metal roof at the gas station were I came to a stop I took a bus and was out of there I thought never again I'm from tx we don't get snow like that here just before I got unto the intestate I went over a long arrow road with a huge lake on each side was also very terrible scary the strong wind coming from the west water running over the highway this happening at night I was coming into North Dakota and seen the dark clouds and as soon as I left the town it started to snow I thought I would ran out of it but it just got worse going so slow and not being able to see is a scary thing every thing is dark and I did make it home safe with a bus I don't like to travel on a bus but that time I was glad I'm not equipped for that kind of weather were I live in west tx it snow s one day and it sunshine the next when it snows here people have a lot of accidents because we don't know how to drive in the snow and I have never gone back I rather travel in the summer to see the beautiful scenery

It seems that all drivers in this video keep getting stuck for one reason only: be cause they simply lack talent for driving. Whilst getting pulled clear the guy sits there with his hand sticking out of the window as if he is some kind of suspect.. Once freed, he keeps driving with his lights off.
Now what I learned from this video is, not to go drive off the beaten track in deep snow in just any old truck

That was one sturdy pine tree, I'm surprised it held (4:45). This is hard to watch as I have lived off the grid in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, all these scenes are just a tad too familiar, but this guy that helps people is truly phenomenal. Nearly every single move he makes is impeccable, but I can appreciate he just doesn't want to cause himself anymore grief.
