  • The Real Reason Why Fathers Don't Exist In Pokemon... Pokemon Adventures introduces us to a relationship dynamic unlike any other, the father and son relationship between Norman and Ruby, and Norman isn't the basic or goofy father that he is in either the games or anime, this version of Norman is ruthless, but he also is the best version of Norman we've ever seen. He's such a great father, that Pokemon will most likely never introduce another father figure into the series ever again. Here's the story of Ruby & Norman!

    To this day i still believe Ruby Sapphire is Pokemon Adventure at its peak, not only does it have a beautiful stories that depict the growth of the 2 main characters, but also makes side characters with barely any role in the game like Winona, Courtney, and especially Norman very compelling.
    Also it managed to make Archie and Maxie, who is more often than not referred by the fandom as 2 idiots, absolute menaces along with Groudon and Kyogre.

    I'm going to have to disagree with the initial statement that Ruby doesn't consider his mother's feelings at all before running away. Because there's a panel where he looks downstairs and sees her shortly before he leaves, and he silently apologizes to her with a sad look on his face (maybe it varies between translations, but I think all are important to consider details from). He is thinking of her and knows that this will probably hurt her, but he thinks it's the only way he'll be able to achieve his dream, especially since we know that Norman has been opposing it for a while and Ruby doesn't really have any reason to believe that he would suddenly change his mind out of the blue.
    I know people get on Ruby's case a lot for not waiting for a few hours for Norman to come home and tell him, but if you really think about it...He already waited 5 years for that, and the moment never came until, from Ruby's limited perspective, it was convenient for Norman. We learn later that's not true, but I think people really forget that Ruby was never told jack squat (partially for good reason), so all he really has to go on are his own interpretations. Not to mention that Norman was against Ruby's desire to do contests when he wasn't around, which I honestly think would piss off anyone at any age, but it's especially prominent because he's a child. Ruby's selfishness in that regard at least partially stems from a certain feeling of "If I don't stand up for me, no one else will", (+ a hell of a lot of trauma avoidance) and while it may not be the most clear on a first readthrough, it's really not a surprise if you're paying attention.
    Side Note: I really like the one translation of the manga where, when Ruby is opening up about the Salamence incident to Wallace, he says "I lost everything" instead of "I lost a friend". It implies that he also blames himself for the fact Norman left the family and part of his anger might stem from the fact that he might genuinely think his father hates him in that context, and his sadness might instead manifest as anger. It makes their relationship feel even more tragic because Norman ultimately couldn't protect him from the blame in every facet. It actually makes me wish they actually had more time to talk because imagine how much more impactful it would be if Norman temporarily died finally understanding his son's feelings and seeing why things happened in the present while Ruby comes to understand the past. Then his survival really gives you the feeling they can start down a path of healing rather than putting a skewed amount of the burden on solely Ruby.
    Sorry for ranting. I just really like the Ruby-Sapphire arc and actually wish it went a little bit deeper into certain things on a psychological/emotional level because that's my bread and butter. This probably being my biggest example.

    No matter how many pros this Norman gets, as somebody who suffered from domestic abuse myself, I can't commend this sort of behaviour. No matter the situation, a father - a parent - should never beat his child. So called "tough love" can easily destroy any sort of trust and understanding between a parent and a child, if not cripple a person mentally.
    Norman from RSE/ORAS way better.

      It's a hard thing to say;
      The line between Discipline and abuse is very thin.
      If you're too soft on them, they will get spoiled (feeling entitled), if you're too hard on them (they won't trust you).

    • @Justic_
      @Justic_ 2 дні тому +8

      I'm pretty sure that was at least partially the point of Normans character in the manga, his "tough love" isn't supposed to be a good thing, it's one of the reasons this entire misunderstanding between him and Ruby existed in the first place, their battle was the result of his lack of communicating with his son leading Ruby to distance himself and to ultimately run away, which enraged Norman. In the end, what mended their relationship wasn't Normans "tough love" (if anything the "tough love"-approach almost led to them both dying), but Norman speaking clearly and giving his son his support.

    • @nguyenphuc306
      @nguyenphuc306 2 дні тому +1

      A bit excessive but Norman only beats his son that one time and it is because he is running away from home. May be it is the different in culture but in Asia, parent hit their child when they did something wrong is quite normal so I don't feel Norman's action is that wrong. Ruby really causes this parent sad and angry.

    8:32 The german version also made this line more tame. However, I believe that it is, while still beeing out of place, better/more fitting then what we got in the english version. "Was ist?!" "Willst du mir was was sagen?! Dann komm her!!" translates to "What is it?!" "Do you want to tell me something?! Then get ( up) here!!" and I think that this fits way better to Normans other lines in that fight.

    Ruby was Norman favourite, he inherited his battle sense and genius. Heck, Ruby once aspire to become like his father.
    Then ONE day, suddenly he turn 180°. I can see why Norman felt betrayed and disappointed, especially since Ruby (like his father) kept things to himself.
    This is a bad habit of both of them, Norman doesn't give Ruby the chance to explain and Ruby doesn't want to explain.

    Norman's story kind of reminds me of my own story with my dad, I wasn't really close with my dad because he wasn't there for my childhood, when growing up my father was in the US while my family and I were in PR, from my understanding he had a very good job at a factory in CT where he manufactured aircraft parts or something, and as his job was very demanding he was usually working overtime and stuff and would only take time off like once a year for Xmas and stuff, and that was when he would get on a plane to be with us, and my interactions with the man were not very good because his hobbies included doing work as a handyman or mechanic, while my hobbies included mainly playing videogames or listening to music and stuff, and I was actually really bad at sports because I wasn't taught by my father to play anything, so that is why my interests started lining up with art related stuff such as music, and I actually learned to play a bunch of instruments, because the Music teacher looked after me during breaks and even during lunch, and he even told my mom that I had a knack for music and that the skill should be further developed by going to an art school, but this is where my dad didn't really understand any of it and did not believe in me, he wanted me to be an athlete like my brother or a math wiz like my other brother, and through his interactions with them I truly felt like he was proud of them while he mostly looked down on my interests and stuff, and as such I didn't go to an art school or did the things I liked, but I eventually did get into computers and became IT, mostly because my family were very bad with technology, and all sorts of stuff at home would break down with no money to repair things, so I kind of took it upon myself to take apart the stuff that broke and try to figure out how everything worked, and in some cases I did manage to repair some things, which is why I developed that skillset since I always had stuff to repair, and eventually I even got a job that I've been working at for about 8 years now, and it was only after my father was at his deathbed that he confessed his thoughts to me, apparently he was always proud of me and wanted to see me succeed at things, but the reason why he didn't let me pursue anything in art, was because he was afraid that I would be unable to make anything of myself, since he did see many family members that had gone through similar things but were leading awful lives due to having no steady income and stuff, and as such he didn't want me to struggle with such a life, which is why he was tough on me but he was actually real proud that I made something out of myself, and that I succeeded in becoming real good with IT and such, especially considering how bad he was with technology himself, where he barely even knew how to use his smartphone and would always come to me for stuff related to tech, and that was when I basically made peace with my old man, and I now miss him as he is no longer around.
    TLDR All parents love their kids, its just that they have a hard time showing it sometimes, and for some they try to raise their kids with tough love, just to try and get them used to the hardships of reality, and the only way to truly know about this kind of stuff, is to just have a heart to heart with your folks, and closing them from your lives is just not the right answer unless they are actually toxic and bad people.

It's the Salamence's (Zinnia's) fault for attacking two random children and going for a rampage--no one here should've takem the 'blame'. Are you telling me he should've just sat there?

    Thanks for exploring Norman as a character. It's annoying when I see a lot of people simply describe Norman as this very abusive father. Like, yeah his actions are quite extreme but that's a really one dimensional way of viewing him. They don't consider why Norman did certain things and mostly only look at the pannel where he punched Ruby once and deem him a monster.

  • @Niall_Sene
    @Niall_Sene 2 дні тому

    While I don't agree with Norman slugging Ruby, his behaviour towards his son was totally valid, Ruby acted like a complete selfish jerk, he ran from home, disregarded his parents feelings and didn't say anything about what he was doing or where he was going.
    Now, he is a kid, so he's naive and impulsive, but Norman just wanted the best for his son, and Ruby completely ignored it. This is why Norman is such a misunderstood character.

    • @barongeoffrey75
      @barongeoffrey75 11 годин тому

      If fault there is for the misunderstanding between Norman and Ruby(or for aggravating it) it comes from those who imosed a sanction for Norman without thinking what would be the result for his family.

  • @mr.yasukeduntin3299
    @mr.yasukeduntin3299 2 дні тому +2

    The manga version of norman really is an awful father that doesn’t let his son do his own thing and look what that got his son.
    To me, I don’t believe that ruby wasn’t a bad kid I believe his father is the main reason why ruby became the way he did and cause him to act the way he is in the manga.
    All ruby wants is to do Pokémon contest while his father wanted him to do Pokémon battles instead to me norman wasn’t being reasonable and supportive to his son.
    He was majorly over the top of him at the building incident and so far as to punch him and beat him up like that’s completely inhuman and abusive of norman to do that to him and ruby wasn’t at fault of all of this as well so…I do believe that both of them wasn’t at fault at all don’t get me wrong I do found the moment when he was beating up his kid wasn’t right at all and he should be arrested for child abuse but the true cause of the father and son unstableness is the Salamance is the blame that cause the sky hight Pokémon to escape and ruby at six years old at the time was trying to save his friend from said dragon-type Pokémon that cause the family mess in the first place.
    And I didn’t read the gen 3 manga at all but all of this could have been avoided if that damn dragon-type Pokémon salamance didn’t break in to the Pokémon research center at the time like what was the salamance was doing exactly?😒

      Read ORAS. It's a treat-

    • @KarpSplash
      @KarpSplash 2 дні тому

      I was confused with what you were trying to say till you clarified at the end that you didn't read the manga. Though you are still getting quite some things wrong (which frankly was stated in the videos clearly), but let me point this out anyways.
      Ruby as a kid did not start out as someone who aspired to be a contest master. In fact, he loved battling and in his own words his training with his father was some of his best memorise. The reason he began to value beauty over battle was because of the Salamance incident where he realised his furious battling abilities scared Sapphire more than Salamance did which was made worse when the Pokemon Association forced Norman to look for Rayquaza for five years making what was actually a healthy relationship between a father and son distant.
      Five years later Ruby had already made up his mind that he wants to do pokemon contest instead of battling and while it's true Norman still wanted Ruby to practice his battling, you have to understand that Ruby was still around the age of 10 which is sttill very young. Not only did Norman wanted to solve the sky pillar maze with his son, he also wanted Ruby to be strong enough to take care of himself. And saying Norman was not supportive of his son is just outright fault. In Ruby's 11th birthday he was going to allow Ruby to pursue his dream to partake in pokemon contest. In Norman's own words he still wanted Ruby to become a trainer and did not understood why Ruby is so fascinated by beauty but he also understood that Ruby is growing old enough to choose his own path and was supportive of it. Had Ruby actually waited till his 11th birthday celebration he would have been able to do what he wanted.
      It's also important to note that Norman hasn't been able to give his time for his family because of the punishment the Pokemon Association imposed in him. So could not always be their personally to check on Ruby. Up until now Ruby and Norman's relationship has not been that of abuse but more so neglect. Something that was totally out of Norman's control.
      As for the building sence, I think people react too much to the punch sence. Yes that was too extreme of Norman to do that and punching an 11 year old is quite uncalled for but that shouldn't just immediately paint Norman as the worse father. Moreover, he only punched him once and Ruby's decision of running away was very selfish which put his mother, someone who loved him his whole love, in this very worried state. Other than punch, most of what Norman did was scolding his for his reckless behavior. The other injuries they sustained was due to the Pokemon battle they had rather than abuse, something that is especially very common in the manga since battles there gets quite extreme even in official matches. But even after all that he let Ruby to continue his dream of partaking in pokemon contest. After that, every interaction between them have never been hostile. In fact, they only bonded more.
      I feel people look into the punch a bit too much. Really, that's the only form of physical abuse Norman has directly inflicted on his own son. The rest done orally, which can only be described as a father scolding his son for his mistakes.
      I am not saying Norman is the best father, neither was the fault untirely on Ruby. Despite how selfish his actions were, Ruby had his reasons for the way he behaved, just that his father was not the reason for those. Norman still cared for his son like taking the blame for Rayquaza's escape entirely on himself for example.
