To a point, it's cuz it's fun. But I also think there's less mental load. You're doing a bunch of pokes and playing a timing game on the rest. Although most of his combos on more complex characters are probably muscle memory now, who knows.
None of the other characters are as fun to play with as gief, they're not nearly as quotable as he is, they're generally pretty weird (Juri, Honda, Lili, Aki) or stale (basically the rest of the cast). I do well with anyone else, I'm straight faced, when I'm doing good for even a moment, my fucking spirit gets uplifted for a moment 😂.
The satisfaction in playing Gief and why people like me main him is a combination of how fun it is to incite fear as you get close to somebody plus the struggle. Getting in can be so hard in some matchups, but once you are in their face and you get them in the mix, it feels so good.
Im convinced geif isnt that good, but my goodness everyone seems to love using him haha. He gets you so hyped. Glad i chose him as my main. Dont worry Hugo will get announced as the next dlc and itll be grappler world for real.
I'm convinced he is pretty good, just not as good as others. Some stuff blatantly bad like his lvl 1 hitbox being weird, Lariat not hitting behind, and Stomp not having any noticeable use, is evened out by his varying CMD Grab ranges, charged heavy punch having a hit of armor, surprisingly good combo game that boosts his damage output even without grabs, most/all of his normals are niche but good when used right, his lvl 1 being an anti air on a character nobody wants to be close to in fear of his grounded CMD Grab, and even his leg parry does decent damage, still not GOOD, but it is so close to being good with a few tweaks, and more! The low tiers have more noticeable downsides than the higher toer cast but can still hold their own surprisingly well in spite of that....as long as we ignore Aki and even then people are split on hiw good she is.
I wish you could do something like this: play one character with classic control until getting master, and play the same character from another account with modern control until getting to master. And compare the outcome. Maybe you can do it just for one character? Otherwise it could take forever
@@simpson6700jiyuna said he is the best modern character lol i think you havent tried the kit tbh. Ive been playing M gief and its one of the better modern kits imo. And yes, for reactionary players, its a very strong kit imo. Gotta play neutral.
is that one combo Super 2 - down forward medium punch - SPD? Or is it an air SPD? I can't tell if he grabs the opponent right as he hits the ground or you start to jump and catch them just before they hit the ground. Great combo either way
@MarigoldAW functionally, with the big thing being it needs to be a nice mechanical keyboard to avoid ghosting. Its also not as entirely comfortable to use a keyboard, speaking as someone who played 60-70 hours of Tekken on keyboard solely and then 100 hours of Street Fighter 5 on a hitbox. Better overall experience, and sanhwa buttons are a plus, as well as having the controller and being able to put it in my lap for example.
@@guyguy7002 I would agree but I feel like a lot of people just want to buy a hitbox because it's "The best" input device technically rather than playing what's comfortable. I usually recommend people to play on keyboard first to see if it is comfortable playing stickless. Nothing sucks more than buying something and regretting it. You're right though definitely a better overall experience
Just a note about Gief's lvl 3, I was able to do 2LK->2LK->LVL3 in a match today. Doubt I'll be able to do it again for awhile (I'm in Gold 4), but still
do you play in a hitbox? I tried to play zangief, but for me its impossible to do an 720 with my hitbox... So I basically need to play without my lvl 3 CA
It's very possible. The input's a bit tricky to learn but you can sneak it in during any other animation to avoid jumping. The way i do it is i slide my finger on right, down and left, press up and slide again. The game does not need a full 720, a 540 motion is enough
@@wa2d10l9 Technically there is a bit of a cheat on pad too. You can get it with going from forward to up back (almost a half circle back motion), pressing the punch button right as you reach upback to prevent the jump. You just press forward and roll your fingers back to upback and press right on time, takes a few tries to get it down but then it's actually easy!
My gief placed into play when I did it on modern controls, only didn’t get diamond as I only got matched into 1 non zoner (ken). Every other match was sim or jp 😂
most emotion i seen from nephew. Gief just does that to ya.
Thats what i was thinking lmao

Yes being able to slam someone for almost half they hp in 1 hit will def do that
I have never seen Nephew talks so much during the match. That is how you know geif is awesome
Two sets into the placement matches and Nephew is already talking about his godlike reads. He's a true grappler main.
Gief brings out the pro wrestling fan in all of us.

23:13 “you can’t do that, that’s the difference between you and me”😂😂
landing SPD is a drug. it's so good
22:20 is the most intimidating thing I've ever seen.
I love the difference in commentary. The zangief is a drug i guess
Dude, nailing a SPD as a punish is SO damn satisfying!
I played a gief online that was incredible with the chops, his normals in the right hands are god tier.
I just recently started implementing his air normals into my game plan and I started to do much better in ranked.
Im convinced geif isnt that good, but my goodness everyone seems to love using him haha. He gets you so hyped. Glad i chose him as my main. Dont worry Hugo will get announced as the next dlc and itll be grappler world for real.
Zangief is the type of character that is NOT easy to casually win with, but when you do win, it is so satisfying.

Use his down down parry thing to counter any drive impact that is a kick!
People sleep on that. I know it's a bitch and very situational, but it's handy when you're cognizant of it.
It's just easier to drive impact back, and you get more out of it
@@yeahboyz9314 but this works if you have no gauge.
@@planexshifter i'll rather use charge heavy punch than the parry, way too risky
Ah, Tundra Storm
One tip about Gief's overhead: it is a good punish for people who constantly jump or backdash because of its range and hitbox.

Bro's crushing skulls like sparrow's egg between thigh
This the one I was waiting for
Bro, I just picked up Modern Gief yesterday and I'm having quite a bit if success, but want to get good in Classic. This is dope!
i don't think gief benefits much from modern, apart from instant supers

Man that JP threw a fireball and fucking died for it. Crazy.
Nephew will take on all of you!
Nephew here giving out freebie notes on each character on how they work.
Much appreciated!
Lariat definitely needs to be hotfixed, not hitting crossups feels super bad...
I actually can't pay attention to you when the Zangief theme is playing 😂
This is perfect because I quite literally picked up zangief yesterday😂
Sameee
You forgot the most important tidbit... His new theme absolutely slaps.
Nephew was lowkey funny playing gief. Actually love to see it
Imagine being so good u can give tutorials on every single character
Guys guys nephew has been replaced with a Doppler ain’t no way ice cold nephew is speaking so much (I like it tho so keep doing it lol)
I was playing in the hub yesterday and i swear gif was grabbing be from way farther then usual like farther then kens hk or sprint kick it was nutts
The fall guys music just slaps wit the gameplay
405: the ultimate lily anti air
at 19:20 how do you do his level 3 super so fast without buffering an attack?
The drive rush was the buffer
That Chun kicked your ass lmao
Not from what i saw, she barely won on the final round of the set.
Let's goo broo!😁
StalinGrab likes this 😎
The fact that the lariat doesn't hit cross ups is straight up bs. Lol.
Can someone explain why Ken's DI didn't counter at 23:12 ? Still learning the game
You take damage when you tank hits with DI (or any move with armor for that matter). If you don't have enough health to pay, you die.
@kurtblacklake oh I see, I never noticed that. Thank you.
Ex spd has the same distance as a medium grab
is that one combo Super 2 - down forward medium punch - SPD? Or is it an air SPD? I can't tell if he grabs the opponent right as he hits the ground or you start to jump and catch them just before they hit the ground. Great combo either way
its air SPD
Zangief went from Clown in SF V to "FOR THE GLORY OF MOTHER RUSSIA" WAY too fast
i really hope they give him his lariat hitbox back, i mean even in world tour lariat still hits behind your character...
song at 20:29?
Need more Gief. He’s my new main absolute beast
You got be on your game with Gief cous your match ups have all the tools.
Zangief!
After you DR in after an spd, what options do you have for if they jump back on wake up? I do the chops but idk if there's other options.
Level one super is a possibly. Not the most reliable move, sadly.
If you 6HK it'll catch a jump back. It works a lot more then you would think since a lot of people instinctively jump back against gief.
Love the content, Do you use fightstick? If so which fightstick do you recommend?
Hes on leverless idk what exactly

My moves don't do the same effect. Why.
Any tips for zangief level 3 on hit box? You did it standing it seemed like too
really hard to do consistently without sliding, look that up if you're not already doing it

Where's my next installment for Gief? *sad train noises*
What controller do you use
I don’t understand how to use his grabs what does that little circle mean (I’m new to sf)
meant to be a 360 on the joystick, if you’re on keyboard or leverless you just need to hit each cardinal direction (left right down up)
