As an Apache pilot IRL, it’s amazing to see stuff like this being made. By the way, the rear grip is known as the flight grip and the grip furthest away from you is the mission grip.
The only thing I can think of being better is a future world where we've all got haptic feedback gloves and can just use our real world hands to manipulate the real controls in the game model. But that's probably waaaaayyy far away in the future.
Virpil solves the problem with the covers using software. In the Virpil SW there is a function called “Press and hold”. This activates a second button for the hold function. Press = Button 35; Hold = Button 46; Simple solution for the covered button: DCS assignment: Emerg.Jettison - Depress = Button 46; Emerg.Jettison - Guard -> OPEN = Button 35; Emerg.Jettison - Guard -> CLOSE = Button 35_OFF. When you press the Emerg.Jettison button on the collective, the guard is opened, when you hold the button it is triggered and when you release the button the guard is automatically closed. 🙂
You can add a binding to the 3 way switches in dcs! You have to do it manually. Go to the bindings, right click the action an add a combo for the OFF state of the up and down switch position. The 3 way switch works as follow: up position = JOY_BTN1, down position = JOY_BTN2, the middle position is then= JOY_BTN1_OFF & JOY_BTN2_OFF.
@@pascha4527 Even if Up and Down or Fore and Aft are momentary, it will still work. When asserting Up or Down, the switch will be actuated in that direction. When released, it will be off for both directions. I have exactly this binding for a practically all of my 3-way switches.
@@pascha4527 It's a 3 way switch. The middle position is no-action. It is literally 'not up' and 'not down'. Per the definition of the aircraft itself, the middle position is 'do nothing'.
@@DerOrso yes, but how would you notify the game that yout want the center action if the switch stay at that position? You'll have to trigger either one or the other? It would be more complicated than a NOR logic.

Man this is a fantastic review. Straight to the point. Highly detailed, and under 20 minutes?!?! Fantastic. I don't have an exact use for this particular joystick... yet; but I will keep an eye on it for sure.
It's beautiful. Let me wipe this tear from my eye. Actually you can Bind the ON/OFF/STOW switch in DCS or any toggle switch, it was added back in 2.8. Go into the controls and bind the ON switch. Now go to the OFF and bind it to the same ON Switch. Now click on the button you just bound and it will make a drop down. Now select that Button_OFF. Example of a ON/OFF/ON switch which is Button 30 and 31. I bind the ON switch to button 30. I select the OFF and bind it to button 30. I click on where it says Button 30 and it brings up the dropdown and I select Button 30_OFF. I now bind the STOW to Button 31. I now make a new bind on OFF and bind it to Button 31, click on Button 31 to bring up the dropdown and select Button 31_OFF. Now when you switch it from ON-OFF it will work and STOW-OFF will work.
DCS now has a way to bind the OFF state of a toggle switch, but needs to be set individually for each switch you want it to recognize in the OFF condition. That was something they added months ago but was never mentioned in any of the patch notes. You first need to know what the name of the specific switch you want, say for example JOY_BUTTON_21. Go into the key bindings, double click the control you want to bind under the appropriate controller, go to the drop drown menu and set JOY_BUTTON_21_OFF. DCS will then recognize that switch state. Works on both 2 and 3 way switches. Great review!
It is amazing! I just no longer even think about such accessories, because it all costs fortune. But from a perspective of a product and what they are able to create for simulations is incredible!
I really loved seeing you you holding the cyclic exactly like me in a real H145! Laying down the hand on your thigh and just move it with the Thum and index and middle finger! Awesome!
On the real grip there are no microswitches in the flip covers. The flip covers have zero interaction with arming/enabling the buttons they cover, they just protect the buttons from you accidently dropping something on them and inadvertently activating them.
for those 3 way switches - have you tried adding a 'virtual' button in the virpil config tool, that would map the inverted state of the physical button? ex, add virtual button 45 as inverted 'mode' of 28
They should have made the searchlight switch a 3 position toggle like half the other switches up and down, and depress for 'off'. The length might be an issue for me, I have my ka-50 stick attached to a Monstertech swivel chair, it's already as far back as I can get it... I wonder if VIRPIL will bring out a 2nd version down the line with microswitch under the switch covers, like they do with the control panel...
Simple solution for the two covered buttons - set the arm function to the pushed ON position on that button and the actual action to OFF. Without pressing it first it is not armed so the action to release will not happen even though it is off. Alternatively use a modifier

All amazing, problem is not many have the room to place 2-3 virtual cockpit setups in their Game Room. A quick replacement of controls when going to annother Module in DCS is neccessary for me. So I went VKB Omnithrottle together with the TM Warthog Throttle as left hand control. They stand on a fixable but easy forward and backward moveable plattform with the Omnithrottle a bit higher on the frontend. So I can fly anything DCS offers with ease without having to mount and dismount stuff whenever I change a Aircraft. But kudos to Virpil making great Collective Sticks! I was thinking about buying the Ka-50 version, but then I came to my senses :)
I've got mine one week ago. 5:33 DCS supports 128 buttons on single Joystick, so there is no any limitation. But with Virpil software it's not hard to fix it, it's has a profile with virtual buttons (when you press JETT, it press also virtual button which can be set in DCS). I would have preferred the PRIME version (I have Alpha prime and love cold metal) but it is what it is.

This is awesome and I'd definitely considering getting. I fly the same block 2 D models at Fort Drum but cannot for the life of me fly this thing in game mainly because of how force trim works on the Apache versus in game, hopefully these controls will solve that issue
It would be far too long to balance on a Z-adapter I'm afraid. I know from experience that even if you can get a stick to center with an unevenly weighted grip, it makes the spring tension feel super soft one way and super heavy the other way.
Dude i really wanna use this for HOSAM on star citizen, loosen up the clutches and mount in more of a vertical way to my left side to allow quicker movement for forwards/backwards thrust. Use the thumbstick on the mission control stick for up down left right translation during landings or delicate maneuvers and the 5 way hat on the flight stick for the same up down left right for dogfighting where i typically either want only full thrust or no thrust (personal preference) honestly a 8 way hat or joystick above the chop button would be way more ideal tbf Flight control trigger for targeting, 3 side way hat for power distribution, other 3 way for missile arm #, switching, missile mode. General menus navigation and precision stuff Mouse will have normal stuff plus chaff, flares, mode switching, freelook, ect If its possible to mount this on a normal stick base that would be ideal that way the side to side movement can be bound to roll but if not i can bind that to my mouse
I enjoyed the commentary on the length and the need to pull the whole system back a tad. As well as, the commentary on the bindings. As someone who's 1st virpil product is this grip (and all that is required to have it work), one of my unknowns is button feel and build quality. I now feel like filth flying FS2020 and DCS with a 100€ x52 HOTAS that was on sale on Amazon three years ago while sitting on a bed or couch and both are not mounted on hydraulic feet. So this is how a simulator is really flown! :D
As i fly in vr, as you do, i wonder. Did you test it in vr too? Are all buttons easily accessible while not looking at them? And also, once you have setup the whole thing to easily reach the two grips, do you still manage to reach the power grip on the collective easily? Or is it too far behind? Thanks
Plenty of sticks out there that are mighty close already; the F-16 design (made by Thrustmaster and Wingwing and others) works great. We need the CP/Gs gunner handles.
@@MCP2002 It is not a precise match, but the F-16 stick (particularly the Winwing with the extra hats and thumbstick) is very close in overall configuration and has sufficient buttons in the correct general layout to cover all the functions of the Apache cyclic. Can the same be said about the TEDAC? No. There is no controller, or even pair of controllers, that can emulate the gunner's TEDAC control handles. There is no good alternative for them. The Virpil Constellation left and right set are one of the only setups that would get you even vaguely close to sufficient switch layout for the TEDAC, but even they have too many buttons and not nearly enough 2- and 3-way toggles.
Love your content n00bifier but this seems a bit too condensed and sparse for a "Full Detailed Review", feels more like initial impressions. Why is the spring counter balance for the collective base considered non optional? what happens without it?. If I want to do something crazy like put the Apache grip in a VPC MongoosT-50CM3 Base, will it work? And if I want to be even nuttier and use it with a Z extension as a Frankenstein throttle can any of the included sets of springs/cams manage to center it? On one hand there is the perspective of the 'intended use case' which is to only be used for simulating the Apache crew experience, but for a "full detailed review" of a peripheral with this price tag, I'd like to see more than just the 'intended use case'.
There's no way you'd be able to use it on a Virpil base with the Z adapter. It would be way too much weight via cantilever. Even if you could get it to center, it would feel like super light springs pushing right, and super heavy springs pushing left. As the person who was building and showing off "omni-throttles" for six years before the first retail one appeared I can tell you this from experience. My v3 "omni throttle" (I always called them "throttle-sticks") was off center from the COG of the metal grip a small amount such that it was a little heavy on the right side, and I rebuilt it to correct this due to significantly uneven spring feel left vs. right.
Disappointing that the Jettison and Chop covers aren’t switches to arm and safe those buttons. Otherwise, I’m still very excited to get my hands on it. I think I was one of the first orders, refreshing the store page from bed I think I got the collective and counter balance in my cart within the first minute.
IRL, the chop button is locked wired shut with some thin lock wire and spring loaded. The Jettison cover is spring loaded for the emergency jettison. If you want to take time and choose the pylons to jett you have the jettison panel. The covers don't arm anything. Ithe collective is more accurate then DCS' binds. Like the searchlight switch is correct.
This isn't the first time I've run into DCS giving bindings for physical covers that have no function other than enabling the button underneath them. I'd rather have the option than not, but it complicates things for cockpit and peripheral design. It might take some LUA scripting trial and error, but you might be able to define a custom binding in DCS that activates both functions (the cover lift and button press) just by pressing the covered buttons.
I expect that Virpil is going to want to make sure there's a way to use the buttons with the flip up covers that doesn't require third party software. It really is a shame they don't have switches on them to detect position. I expect it's probably too late for them to change the hardware there even if they didn't have a good reason for not doing this in the first place, but it might not be too late for them to change the searchlight switch.

I know it's a little unrelated, but I've been meaning to ask this, and seeing your studio has grown in terms of cool toys, reminded me. You have that one rig with the (3) 4k sony TVs, mostly I've seen you do racing games on that setup. I think you also did your helo video (with your pilot friend) on that. How does DCS and SC do on triple 4k? I imagine SC doesn't like it (but I'd love to be wrong), and DCS is decent now that we're doing multithreading. But I wanted to ask the guy who knows for certain because he has all the toys! I have (3) 1440p monitors in a span, and both games do well (or well enough in SC's case) with it, wondering if it was time to consider moving up to 4k or not.
Last time I was running triple monitors in SC the quantum markers, party makers, etc. were huge. It was so bad I switched away from triple monitors. Is this not still the case, or is it just not something that bothers you @@NOOBIFIER1337 ?
Just what I needed to bang my desk with and finally we can properly control the search lights for all those bright days in the desert. And gloating over the Apache supposedly being OP... Obsolete Potato maybe.
As I said, I'm not presenting myself as an expert in aviation. My 2 Tours of Afghanistan and 1 Tour of Kuwait was from the Army perspective, so unfortunately all of my experience is on this might be tainted by watching theses completely dominate the enemy for hours.
Was really hoping to see a dive into how you actually use it. My brain is having trouble understanding even just the ergonomics of a cyclic with TWO grips on it. I mean how tf do you even physically use it? My brain died.
One grip is for combat the other is for basic flight. Normally when doing combat, you wouldn’t need to touch any of the other things, or you could ask your #2 to help with the workload.
Tbh i hard disagree with the VR pushers. VR is not better for DCS. Whats better is what works for you. Personally, I hated DCS in VR. Playing it with a high quality monitor and Tobii eye tracker is a way better experience. VR limits you a lot and needlessly strains your eyes for a minor minor "immersion" value.
You need fix your HMD/setup if you have eye strain. Which HMD have you tried? I had trackir 5. I sold it immediately as I get CV1. I have Pimax 8KX and Quest 3 now.

@@bronco5334 It's not the same. I have most of the others. The AH64 has a distinct cyclic.
@@bronco5334 I know. I own a few of the other replica sticks (VKB, WH and Cougar). I'd just really like a replica AH64 cyclic.
I am doing a video on the counterbalance today.
My v3 "omni throttle" (I always called them "throttle-sticks") was off center from the COG of the metal grip a small amount such that it was a little heavy on the right side, and I rebuilt it to correct this due to significantly uneven spring feel left vs. right.
How about a good cyclic and anti torque pedals for the 64?
I use VPC ACE-Torq Rudder Pedals and VPC Constellation ALPHA Prime Grip with dead stick
Your rig is nuts!
where can i get info on the platform you have
Search for either CH2 or QsS25
@NOOBIFIER1337 is that the info for the multi direction platform you have?
Which stick do you recommend for the cyclic?
I use just WARBrd grip. It’s cheap and good
Disappointing that the Jettison and Chop covers aren’t switches to arm and safe those buttons. Otherwise, I’m still very excited to get my hands on it. I think I was one of the first orders, refreshing the store page from bed I think I got the collective and counter balance in my cart within the first minute.
I’m sure a Macro can be made so when the button is pressed it arms then actions
I love noobifier in DCS!
Super cool!
I dont even play dcs and i loved this review
I expect that Virpil is going to want to make sure there's a way to use the buttons with the flip up covers that doesn't require third party software. It really is a shame they don't have switches on them to detect position. I expect it's probably too late for them to change the hardware there even if they didn't have a good reason for not doing this in the first place, but it might not be too late for them to change the searchlight switch.

I truly can't wait. I am a pensioner and started a part time job to get this kit and it will complete my pit.
once we get a pilot station cyclic, I'll be sold on the pair.
Wonderful! Marvelous! Bravo!
Many thanks!
I'm curious, what helicopter sim is that? It takes me back to the Jane's simulator days like such as Longbow 2! Is it based off Arma 3?
DSC AH64 module
2:33 shiiiiiisch !!!! :D
So whats the price on the total package? Grip, chair
With motion?
@@NOOBIFIER1337 ye#, the whole setup please
@@VanceLaSalle On this setup, its a Qubic CH2, a set of Qubic 220, the sled is a Monstertech MTS with a Flight Chair. Without PC or Screens, its about $25-$28K USD. You can contact me and or search for "Noobifier CH2"
Initially, I thought Noobifier was going to show us how he glued two sticks together, for giggles.
This is not off the table.
they should've made these exceedingly even more modular so you can have a 3 metre polearm collective
this is insane
I just had blown out all the snot in my nose and had to listen to "that thing is that good and changes the experience so much" like 4 times because I was hearing "not good" lmao.
AWESOME
why am I just now realizing that I could have mounted the base 180 degrees so that the cable didn't face forward... D'oh
You are welcome.
Shiny toys 😮
Triple 4K on the 7900xtx is perfectly fine in DCS on MT. SC hovers just shy of 60FPS. Driving games mostly sit near 120hz.
My 2 Tours of Afghanistan and 1 Tour of Kuwait was from the Army perspective, so unfortunately all of my experience is on this might be tainted by watching theses completely dominate the enemy for hours.
you are 100% right :D @@NOOBIFIER1337
Now if Virpil will only do the TEDAC, that would be great!
still waiting mine sadly
Now that's a big stick!
Need flight stick and gunner grips next
I CAN'T KEEP WORKING 3 JOBS TO FEED MY ADDICTION! AHHHGGHG!
I love the way the Apache collective is just a joystick on top of another joystick. It looks so stupid lmao.
So very cool, but so beyond my ability to afford, or play :D
I made life mistakes. I want toys. Although I don't need to say I've invited moist noodle to my house lol
I'm coming to your house anyway. Turn the kettle on.
@@Moist_Noodle Well now I've spit my morning coffee on my lap and I have the moist noodle haha. xD
I don’t want this.

I swear I don’t want this.
What in the world is that chair you're sitting on that moves? I'm about to break the world record for pulling a credit card out of one's wallet.
👍
There goes my wallet again...
Now i know how the car tuner guys feel.
The twist throttle is such a waste of money.
Unless you want to practice throttle off autorotation
I need to stop watching your reviews. Every time I do, I want to buy something else ffs. Cheers Noobs. 😅
If you play VR… yes
Regarding switch covers. In real life the majority are not switches. We need @EagleDynamics to stop making switch covers a switched event in the game.
It’s a macro now
Then you can say : "my collective is bigger than yours"
why not just save a profile for us to download copy ur input folder zip it up ;-)
