Also, the duolingo characters are genuinely fun, love the stories, wish all courses had them.

I'll be honest, in the ranking of creepy mascots, Duo isn't that high up. It's more cute then creepy imo. I genuinely think just making it a large piece for the body and head helped a lot (looks like a giant plushy). Could you imagine if it was split in two to have an articulated neck? It would be more expressive, but in a bad way.
I should probably go back to duolingo, I made more progress in french there then I did in my three years of high school (which might say a lot lol). But to make any decent progress you need to dedicate at least an hour a day to reviewing and learning new material and that can be a big investment some days.
Duolingo being on TikTok to shame me for not doing my lessons feels like every single Spotify ad trying to shame me for not buying premium.

Owls don't feel sadness and cartoons also don't. However, cartoon owls are known to be very emotional, especially when it comes to sadness. This means that yes Jarvis, you very likely did make Duo sad. And not just sad, very sad. When taking care of a cartoon owl, you should always try your best (as your merch says) to not hurt their feelings, as they are easily hurt. I hope this bit of scientific trivia was helpful and I hope you will take good care of Duo in the future.

3:30 we used to have this really old tree in our back yard and a momma owl had her babies in it. one day while she was gone the tree collapsed out of nowhere and killed all the baby owls. when she came back she sat on the power line in disbelief for a good few, looking for her babies and her home. ever since then i’ve seriously never been the same

I've only been using Doulingo for a little over a month now but I really love that they go out of their way to make their characters and stories diverse. Reading one of their stories about two women going on their honeymoon was really great. It's the little things.

As a part of the Owl House fandom, I’ve seen the havoc that this owl can bring to lives. This company will interact with any fans. Even the ones trying to ship their mascot with a children’s show character.

"Tá an bhean/an fear sa chuisneoir" which means "the woman/the man is in the fridge."
I do not know why there are people in the fridge and at this point I'm a little afraid to ask.

Some species of Barn Owl mate for life, and in cases where one mate dies, the surviving partner has been observed engaging in face-pressing behaviors (standing in a tree and turning their face against the trunk) until they starve to death out of grief.

As a resident of Minneapolis who does not use TikTok, the fact that they have a "brand" TikTok that is trying to be cutesy/cringe, with everything they've pulled in the last two years, is overwhelmingly infuriating

I've been in their office for a gig I was working there. It's pretty sweet, but you have to be SUPER quiet while people are there working. Definitely not the work environment for me.

I've worked with owls in wildlife rehab and can only confirm that they feel fear, curiosity, and boredom. We'd give them cat toys for enrichment.
I remember that there was this one my Duolingo Spanish unit that taught you sentences like: "(yes/no) *name* the blank (is/is not) mine" and some of those got real shady. Some of my favorites:
"Yes Carla, the wine is mine!"
"No David, the child is not mine."
"No Lee, the bathroom is not mine!"
YES IVE SEEN THEM. I appreciate that they are self aware that their image is a bird that will stab you if you miss a Spanish lesson
As someone who has used Duolingo for Japanese and Russian with the free version and now Spanish with the plus version here is my honest opinion.
1. Duolingo should be used as one of *many* tools when possible. Solely using Duolingo won’t make you fluent, especially if you don’t have native speakers where you live in your target language. It’s best when you use it in addition to learning grammar and practicing speaking elsewhere. But I will say, when my motivation to learn drops to nearly nonexistent, doing at least *a* DL lesson a day means I’m still doing something until my motivation comes back.
2. Not all languages are created equally on DL. Language lessons are created by volunteers and the more popular a language is the better the lessons tend to be. I find Spanish on DL to be more varied and helpful than Japanese or Russian.
3. Going back to point one, DL is fabulous for learning vocabulary and sentence patterns. Some people hate how repetitive it can feel(though you don’t *have* to do every level of each lesson), but as someone with ADHD the repetition helps to make things actually stick.
4. The waterfall method helps things stick better than maxing out each lesson before moving onto the next.
5. Do you need plus to use DL successfully? Not at all. I like it because I don’t want to be limited by the hearts, but plenty of people so fine without plus or even like the limited hearts. I used DL on and off for years without plus.

I think Duolingo is a decent way to learn just a bit of a language before visiting, so that you can navigate restaurants and airports enough, and so that you can tell them that you don’t speak Spanish or French or Chinese or Russian or Hungarian or Japanese or Portuguese or another language
It can also be a decent supplement to a more immersive learning method especially the newer feature of short stories

I think Duolingo is ok. It’s just translation. The stories are fine but nothing revolutionary. The best thing about it is it’s design, so good on them for that. Babbel and other language apps just use stock photos and it’s so soulless.

I always wonder if when a bunch of brands reply to each other if it's the same person who works for them all and is just talking to themselves.
I don't know how helpful it is by itself, but Duolingo is legitimately helpful for my high school Spanish class. It's not perfect but it's honestly helped me with vocab and practice for certain grammatical concepts.

As a cartoonist, my creations are indeed capable of sadness. I get great joy from tormenting them, their two-dimensional tears add to my lifespan and restore my youth.
I can't deal with the emotional guilt from Duolingo. Also the most I feel like I've "learned" is how to say "sorry, I'm an apple" in Dutch, which given the languages I'm more comfortable with, I feel really unsure about
Cartoons actually do have emotions. The only thing is that the artist has to draw the different emotions. So when they want to cry. The illustrator has to take his pen. Dip it in the inkwell. Draw the tears. Color the drawings in. Animated them, clean them up. And then the cartoon is able to cry. Which is the reason why cartoons don’t cry that much. Animation is very expensive

I off and on do duolingo because I moved from the US to the Netherlands and once in a while the app has a pop up that says "giving up on Dutch is SO mainstream"
I downloaded the app while watching this and started learning Swedish (my native language). Definitely not a perfect app but good enough. I did find some sentences that I thought were a bit funny, maybe it's just me but anyways. Here's some of them...
"Why is the kitchen full of blood?" (excuse me WHAT)
"The player throws balls at the audience" (why?)
"It hurts to jump from the third floor" (that's a bit dark)
"Her back is so beautiful" (coming off a bit creepy there bud)
I'm currently learning Swedish on duo so can't wait to get to those!

I remember skipping a few DuoLingo lessons, so a few days' worths of lessons and the app passive-aggressively sent me a notification along the lines of "We see you haven't been active in your lessons lately. DuoLingo will stop sending you notifications until you're ready." I honestly felt as if I were in trouble for not doing homework assignments and haven't been on the app since (7 months ago)

I am a fluent Spanish Speaker now and I used Duolingo a lot. It's not a good way to learn a language, but it is a good way to practice and keep up. They have stories and podcasts that can help. If you use it right, it can be really helpful. Their advertising is weird, but it's a good service, especially since it's free. The other thing I will say is they shouldn't penalize you for getting answers wrong, and they didn't use to do that.
Owls can probably feel sadness but not duo. He only feels the handle of your backdoor to your house as he opens it.
