A great video Daniel. As I get older I am finding my happiness in stillness, calm, meditation, nature and more of my own company. The more time I strive towards these things and less indulgence in the busy people world the more content and happy I feel. Of course I love my dog to bits!
It seems strange at first but it works. Thanks Daniel for a very thought provoking video. You are a wise man.

Daniel, I really enjoy watching your videos and admire what you're doing. I'm especially looking forward to seeing your next report on the cottage restoration. Just a tip; don't forget to install the necessary charging unit wiring for charging an electric vehicle. Presumably, this would be best installed wherever you presently park your ICE vehicle. Love the many creative ways you're using to earn additional income outside of what you produce at Mossy Bottom. I'm also glad to see your Go Fund Me account is doing okay for you. Best for the future!

Toilet pun: Do what you do do well. :)
I do have a septic system and a flush toilet, but the last Arctic blast froze my pipes. Luckily, I had my camping gear, a 5 gal. water jug with a hand pump and a Luggable Loo toilet. I lined it with a kitchen garbage bag and used pine pet bedding for the soak.
The last time my pipes froze, a couple of years ago, I just used a regular bucket with pipe insulation on the top rim. It worked. The two bags in the back garden can go in my composter now and three from this winter can sit and wait their turn.
My house needs more maintenance, but, eventually, I plan to get solar to offset my hydro bill and keep my house lit during outages.

I think most of us just can't get rid of this thought "what if I risk everything and fail and then I have nothing to come back to". This is ridiculous especially regarding the fact that "everything" is things we really don't need but it's also a part of human nature - to hold on to this "comfort zone" even though it doesn't bring you happiness, but just out of fear. This is also sad due to the fact that most of our lives just pass by this way where we dream of things but never take a step. You're perfectly right about all the things you said, many thanks for those as always 🙏🏻

Recently realised how much I truly need those walks with my dog. I work a very sedentary job, and I used to think I was too exhausted from working, but it was the imbalance between exhausted mind and body bursting with energy that kept me feeling stuck and like I was moving through molasses.

When you mentioned adaption, my first thought was the pandemic. At the beginning, I felt like someone had pulled the ground from underneath me. It felt surreal and I didn’t know how I could even cope. But here I am, nearly 2 years later. I’ve barely seen my friends, all the things I used to do before, I haven’t done yet. No party, no shopping in the city, nothing. Sounds boring, but I do all this, to stay safe, to safe others in a way. Now I’m used to being at home, taking daily walks with my husband (we don’t have a dog or any pet). I’m still scared and often sad about how things still are. But I adapted to this new normality. I’m okay with staying home, working from home, studying from home. I can watch birds in our garden, plant vegetables (well, I try. Doesn’t work that well). I may not be that happy, but I think someday I can look back and be proud of what I accomplished: first writing my bachelor‘s thesis in the summer of 2020 and soon I’ll write my master’s thesis, all from home, with online classes and meetings. I learned that I don’t need many people around, that I don’t need shopping, that I can do my own clothes, that I even have an artistic side and that I enjoy working remotely.

Forced adaptation out of fear? I'd encourage you to take back the parts of your life you truly miss. Certainly you can be safe as well as happy. Of course keep the new routines you enjoy, but bring back those that make you happiness. We are not promised tomorrow no matter how careful we are in life.
Here many haven't miss one day of work on site unless sick. Some businesses closed only briefly (several weeks) & some had employees telecommuting. Sad to hear others had a completely different experience.

I spent my life not understanding why I didn't fit in and didn't have friends like everyone else, Why no one picked me to be on their team or ask me to join them for coffee etc. I've discovered late in life that I'm an introvert and a bit strange and that turns people off. I've embraced who I am and while I do now have a small group of friends that I catch up with every week I spend most of my time alone doing the things I enjoy. I get happiness and contentment from my garden, my little sail boat, my drawing and painting and music. I don't care any more about other people liking me or not. The covid scam taught me to be even more independent and walk away from absurd rules and stupid people. That feeling of being apart has seen me watching people wearing masks, scanning QR codes and lining up to be injected with an untested chemical just because they were told too. Like unthinking sheep and I don't understand that either.

I'm a happy guy by design, but I have lost my happiness at times throughout my life due to being such a high risk taker. I've since learned to better safeguard my happiness, by slowly and cautiously moving forward in all new situations and relationships, and have an easy escape out should it become necessary. I've also learned to always trust my gut. It is the best thing I have, besides my brain and spiritual help, that helps keep me safe and happy.

I saw this quote: "He thought he'd never be happy again. Now, he says, he's come to feel it's not either/or, yes or no, always or never. Maybe happiness is sometimes."
In a society that advertises "chasing" happiness, this quote gave me an attainable perspective to escape from black-or-white thinking. The material is from the book "Maybe You Should Talk to Someone" by Lori Gottlieb--a great read to challenge limiting beliefs within.

Daniel, what a wonderful human you are. This reminds me so much of my father who had, to me, perfected the art of living in the moment. One of his stock phrases was to "Hurry slowly". Now having turned 70 I'm beginning to understand what he meant. My dad was a veteran light aircraft instructor but really he should have been an educational psychologist. He understood that the most advance form of teaching was simplicity. Someone once remarked to me that he had the "aesthetic approach to flying training". I asked what he meant by that and he said to me that going flying with my dad was like a new experience every time. He was passionate about what he did and he was and still is a legend to many.

Perfectly timed video, for years I have struggled with depression, all through my twenties and half way into my thirtys but recently with some help I realised its a combination of lifestyle and my relationship with society making me ill, I was just working, eating junk food and playing online video games and just became totally disconnected from my emotions and feelings. I started eating better, limited the time I'm online drastically and started reconnecting with nature wether it be feeding the birds in my garden or going for a cycle in the woods or just for a walk. I can honestly say I'm so much happier now, as you say I hear a bird song or see a deer in the forest or watch the sun come up and I just feel good about life in the moment. I'm so glad I found your channel, you have honestly helped me more than you could ever really know.

Whole heartedly agree with you and everything you said makes sense to me on your theory of a happy life and to live for the present. We visited Sligo on one of our trips to Ireland for a months holiday and then we came back again a few years later all the way from Perth, Western Australia. Last visit was just before Covid hit world wide. Ireland is my favourite country to visit and I felt at my happiest when just visiting that beautiful country. It is very green, very scenic, majestic even, very old, has loads of castles, very interesting and always cool and has great music and lovely people. I have traced back to my Grt, Grt, Grt Grandparents living in Ireland (County Kerry and Dublin) so then I knew why I had this affinity and love for it. My Grt, Grt Grandfather was sent as a convict when he was only 22 years old to Perth W.A. for trying to steal a cow in 1853 to serve a 10 yr sentence. (Brutal I must say) but if it wasn’t for him I would not be here.
I love your videos and admire and can understand how nice it must to live the lifestyle you live but of course I see how hard you have worked as I have been tuned in for a long time now and I see how hard you are still working to maintain your happy and healthy lifestyle. Thanks for the videos. I will stay tuned for more. 🙂

I've been in a "needle stuck on the groove of a record," repeating the same patterns, feeling very disconnected, conning myself that i enjoyed myself, and noticing that my mind was lost in a grip of fear. As i started to slowly recover, it was if I'd had a kick up the backside, and i recognised how i was living. Whatever causes this to happen, it's a blessing.

Success to me this year is finally getting some seeds planted, potting them up, planting some potatoes in a couple of containers and seeing some leaves pushing through. I get so much happiness from my garden and since the lockdowns, I am baking my own bread and now cake! You are right, it's all the normal everyday small pleasures that make us the happiest, appreciating your surroundings, the countryside, walking, moving and not dwelling on past experiences. I miss rock climbing abroad, I miss the friends and family I used to spend time with. But there is so much to give you satisfaction in life, we all can find happiness if we are open to it and allowed to pursue it. Freedom.

I have just realised why I am drawn to your videos, it's because you are so genuine in yourself it really draws me in. Very refreshing from all the stuff you see nowadays, even the people I know in person seem to put a mask on to try and be what they are not. Good on you sir!

I have a theory of "equal ambition." That is, the ambition to just sit on a porch at the end of the day and watch the sun set is equal to the ambition of growing a multi-national business. And these days, it might be just as difficult to attain.

Excellent reflections I totally agreed with & add that when I used to hike in remote areas like that it's a perfect time to give thanks for God & pray. I'm housebound now due to health & miss that freedom to walk. Also, when I would walk along studying plants, wildlife, insects or even resting in places & just listening to the sounds; it all helps me to appreciate the simple but complex creation that makes one appreciate their own life. I recommend taking the time to smell the roses along the your path. :)

I enjoy all of the content on this channel but the ones of a philosophical inclination I find particularly gripping.
The internet is very rich on information but often poor on wisdom and these videos help to fill that void nicely. Keep it up.👍🏻

This is a wonderful reminder… thank you. So very inspiring- I hope to take the leap of faith and find a journey of my own similar to yours. People are so lost and consumed in a world that doesn’t exist, I do not fit it- and that makes it hard for me to coexist and be happy.

I really needed this. I feel insecure and afraid so much of the time (sometimes with reason; I live in a crime-ridden area and had a close brush last week) - but I am alive, and that sort of always wins! The little joys that you mentioned - they win, don't they? I pray for a safer life, but not one free of problems entirely. You are right that a really fulfilling life comes in part from meeting and overcoming challenges.... and yes you are good at it, and good at encouraging others.
You do look happier now, and hope you are quite content with your life! So good to see Mossy having fun at the beach too! Looking forward to the next storytelling episode! :-)

Great to see you Daniel & Moss for a walk on the Beach, your wellys come in handy for splashing around on the beach , maybe not for hiking in countryside and rock climbing though, I guess Pursuing Passions you mentioned is maybe Hobbies which can be great for drifting off in and whiling away the hours, take care

I am Irish living in Palm Springs California where the winter is warm and comfortable.
I love my hearth in County Cork and on my biannual returns to Ireland and the UK I like to submerge myself in the earthiness of Irish culture including the rain.
I truly appreciate and enjoy yourself and the philosophy that sustains you. The simplicity of your daily life must influence your aspirations hence the pleasure of a cup of tea, a cosy fire and the circle of animals and plants that give you sustenance.
I have a young partner who is Native American and he has that affinity with the earth and the elements that sustain us all. I am so looking forward to taking him to my Ireland including Sligo where I have family.
My alternate summers to escape the heat are focused on traveling in America mostly in my Recreational Vehicle (caravan).
You inspire me by the holistic nature of your life. I see the inevitably of your life and how the seasons would wear you down if it was not for your other interests.
I could envision myself in your life as a person to share it and ultimately love you as a companion but to be alone every day would eventually crush my spirit.
God bless you and keep you; you are a delight just like the lady who shares ' Fairy Cottage' on UA-cam.

Thank you, Daniel. Another lovely vlog; I look forward to your next folklore story.
Received the second calendar-no worries. Love the Christmas card; have the card up even now in a special place to take me in my dreams to your small holding. Haven’t had a chance to review on Etsy, but will ASAP. My mum-in-law passed just after the New Year; my husband had a sudden near fatal illness he’s still recovering from, and my mum is now on hospice.
I’ll welcome anyone’s, including your, positive energy for my mum to have a peaceful & smooth transition; she’s being very well cared for thank goodness.
Love to both you & Moss.
💛🌀🕊✌🏼PS None of them had COVID19 so visitors were allowed. Terrible shortage of hospital beds & nursing staff though here in USA & of course no universal healthcare of any kind. So wrong at any time but especially during a pandemic. Plenty of money for bombs & warfare though. No wonder I find so much peace in your vlogs, Daniel. You’re performing a great service for so many of us, & I know I’m not the only one who’s grateful.

Ireland and so miss those beaches. Freezing but wonderful. I’ve been living in BC Canada for many years now. Not near the ocean at all but I do have my memories. Thanks for your hard work. Looking forward to the next one. 👍💚

Wow totally hear you on point 2. Being in charge of my own schedule I thought would be easy but I easily get pulled into a continual progress spiral and only recently due to a death in the family I had to go back to England and was forced to slow down. So although it was a sad occasion I was grateful for the reminder to calm down and that Rome wasn’t built in a day. Thanks for a great vid. Maybe we will cross paths someday. We are in west Clare

I love watching your video's Daniel, wise words, I wish I had figured out what I needed when I was younger, it took me until my 40s to realise all I was missing was the simple life, a life surrounded by nature, I thought back to when I was at my happiest as a child, and it was walking my dog through the fields, then sitting on a giant haystack listening to the birds, I was living in the present, I lost it for a while but I'm finding my way back slowly but surely, keep up the fantastic work, and thanks for sharing your life on you tube!

How wonderful to be able to wander along a virtually deserted stretch of beach (OK winter might have something to do with it). I live on the coast too, however our beautiful coastline has been defiled by the huge and ugly edifice of a well known national holiday camp. Litter and other unmentionable stuff on the beach are a by-product. The local water company pumps raw sewage into the sea. I dream of escaping to peace and quiet and somewhere I can look after for nature.
