I was on a forest walk a couple of weeks ago in Donegal. It had been a tough week, I saw a newt and a sparrowhawk and it just made my day. Also saw a wild deer later that week, it was absolutely magical.

I guess you might call my 3 acres a smallholding. When I moved here 6 years ago I was surrounded by hundreds of acres and only had 2 neighbors. I put my blood, sweat and tears into this property and now with so many people moving to Texas, I will soon be surrounded by hundreds of houses. Suburbia is coming in like a battering ram. I have looked for property elsewhere but it has gotten so expensive if you can even find anything suitable and I don't want to live too far from my grandsons. I may be that crazy old lady holding out with all her various animals and gardens. I love this lifestyle. The day I stop is the day I die.

We just moved out of Texas, to Colorado and we are being inundated with new comers here too. Mostly from the coasts. Our "town" is now 240,000 people. The 24th largest in the USA. Going to retire to a town of 15,000 or less.

I love the way you inadvertently pet the dog and cat without even knowing you are doing it.

I absolutely would love to be in your situation but sadly to old now, you make the most of the time, it's age that makes it go faster

In cities nature doesn't dictate how we live.
This resonates. Lived in Toronto for some years and even though it gets to minus thirty, you sometimes felt like you were in a simulation, moving as you did through a white mineral world in street cars or Ubers. In rural Ireland you feel as if the land needs you as much as you need it.
It's a dance rather than an expedition.

    • @tillysanders2593

I live in Toronto. As a Brit originally from coastal Southern England I miss the temperate climate of home The seasons here are far more extreme. The long bitterly cold cruel winters and breifest spring times Sweltering short summers and dramatic unpredictable Autumn's.
Although not as connected to weather compared to rural living, for me it's iimpossible not o be effected by some sort of seasonal effective disorder. Athough in this hectic city life stops for nothing and certainly not inclement weather .

My good sir, people can make such unrealistic and rude comments. My goodness, you are one man taking care of your home, garden and livestock. How would it even be possible to document your every action? Be true to yourself and continue to share your experiences with the world. You live your best life and set your own goals and expectations. I appreciate you sharing your part of Ireland with this American that would not easily make the trip. Your care for the land and livestock is genuine and much appreciated!! Blessings

I had lived in my 1-bedroom apartment for close to 30 years. There are 28 units. Other than the on site manager, I don’t know anyone’s name or face (I bet they didn’t know me either). Tenants in the building don’t move in and out because the landlord doesn’t charge too high a rent and doesn’t do the annual 3% raise like clockwork. When I moved out this year my rent is less than half of what a market rent would be. My old neighborhood is hip and vibrant, full of musicians, actors, and people who work in or around entertainment industry (close to Hollywood and Burbank). Now I live in a retirement park. I shall make a point to know my elderly neighbors and keep an eye on them.

I've learned to see Autumn as a time for recuperation as I too have struggled with the change from Summer. I previously noticed being really frustrated but this is now less so, when I believe it is time for us as with the trees and nature to rest before coming alive again. Two years ago moved from UK to Poland and to a small country village by the sea and since coming across your videos in recent weeks, you have inspired me to do more and go further than the few chickens we have. I am so grateful to the change!!!

    • @Tsuchimursu

To me autumn is the time to take a last sprint. Tuo get things done while it's not sweltering hot, but before everything gets covered in snow... When the snow covers everything, it's time to take a holiday from homesteading and go to work in the city to gather funds for the next summer.

We have a Bentley instead of a Moss a German Shep but he is no good at herding just chases and scares the chickens but great at warding off foxes, we let them free range all year round, even in the current snow, they like to roost and hide under our caravan. I understand the reason for the Bunnies for better fertiliser, kids keep asking about Bunnies!!!

I look forward to hearing that sweet song at the end every time. Have you put the words out somewhere? I live out in the country in Washington state. Every kind of wild life. A bear in the plum tree this summer, moose prints in the field telling of it's passing sometime in the night. Coyotes singing, cougar passing through. I am 66 this year and can't think about the time I may have to move. So I'll just go out and bring in more wood for the fire tonight as the forecast is snow. Sweet dreams.

A nice list! I laughed over #5 but I'm glad you put it in. Nothing unhealthy there. And, I love Autumn most of all the seasons - I get a feeling of anticipation, like something magical is going to happen, mixed in with the melancholy. Maybe I just like melancholy!
I hope you really are enjoying your lifestyle in the way you intended, and don't feel too much pressure to sort of commercialize or capitalize on your YT popularity. Sometimes I rewatch your old videos, and there is a difference, but I can't say in which you seem happier. The new ones seem busy-happy, and the old ones seem drink-in-the-peace-and-reflect-deeply-on-life happy. May you enjoy both kinds of happiness for years to come.

I live on an acre in the middle of nowhere in Michigan. I have to be careful to ensure I have sufficient supplies to last through unforeseen events such as blizzards, or widespread power outages that close the few businesses nearby. When planning my shopping, my motto is “two are one, and one is none.” When the pandemic first struck Michigan, people were panic buying, and store shelves were quickly emptied. I was able to stay home, away from people, secure in the knowledge that I had everything I needed. It’s just how you live when the nearest grocery store is twelve miles away.

Tipperary here, Big thumbs up to you, even more so that you chose the northern -west of Ireland, there is huge difference in the weather between let say Galway and Tipp Town, so much less rain... We are trying to run a small holding and add to our income, but for us it is mostly about showing kids the difference in food from supermarket and your own growth. And the animals we keep are layers hens and rabbits, so that the kids can learn how to take care of an animal that can actually take care of you.

I get the peace of the forests in mornings, evenings and weekends, and migrate to the beehive during the days. I feel like the two operate on completely different levels of consciousness. I didn’t realize you get snow there. I was in Dublin in the winter/march 1966 once, it was raining, so very cold but no snow. I was a young bachelorette joining family in England for a segment of their long trip, and stopped over in Ireland on my way since i relish that part of my heritage. Took Aer lingus boston to limerick,
    had dinner at
Bunratty castle (love the ubiquitous parsnip and carrot side dish offered at all eateries ), then on to Dublin, did
some walking tours, climbed up in
Nelsons Pillar the day before it was blown up!!!!, saw the Book of Kells at Trinity (I recall that tourists asked me for directions that day, which was a thrill, i think i looked quite Irish in-my youth, had dinner with local friends of my Dad, and then on to London. Ive always wanted to go back to Ireland and do a horse riding tour or a driving tour. Its so beautiful there. Not much time left.
Ive always grown veggies and fruit, so i feel that kinship with you, as i probably mentioned earlier.
Clearly. Im an introvert, per your description.

But you should try the forest park if you want that kind of outdoor activities ,zip lines, boating, hiking etc
Hope you get your cottage up n runnin soon ,it’ll make a big difference having a roof over your head
The weather should improve after the solstice & Christmas the days should be getting longer
But now it’s bleeding freezin !

Awesome explanation on the energy of nature vs city, I also like cities in a holiday setting and nature as home base. I lived in Berlin for 7-8 months and people ask me what I think of it, I always say, it's awesome but I'm sure it took away some of my lifespan. The energy is different and exciting; however, I don't need that all the time.

I do not live in Ireland, though I would LOVE to. I've been there multiple times for a month or so. I also don't have a small holding (yet?) but I do live on the edge of a village (which is sadly getting cityfied VAST), and that means I have some small options at least. My next door neighbor and I share a passion for gardening (though she grows flowers and I have a vegetable plot) and we decided a couple of years ago to get rid of the fence between our gardens. Neither of us was fond of the boxed-in feeling we got surrounded by man-height wooden panels. Since a year or so we have chickens too and enjoy the eggs, the spoils of our gardens (flowers, vegetables, and fruits). We're currently locked in a battle with our newest two chickens, trying to convince them to sleep IN their coop instead of on top of it. It's not the live I dream of, but it is something, and enough for now.

I took the Wren survey (already knowing my carbon footprint is pretty light by USA and yes even, European standards), but I am not impressed with their methodology when it comes to food. They are definitely pushing the 'all meat and dairy bad' narrative even though when I did the survey as a meat/egg/dairy eater and then as a vegan, my score only changed one tenth of a point. What it fails to ask in any form in the food questionnaire is where is your food coming from? Imported from yonder shores? Monoculture cropping? Heavily irrigated and picked by exploited farm laborers? Chemically dependent? Or from one's own garden or farm--or one's neighbors? Eating locally and seasonally is huge in really addressing food security and sustainability. Given this tremendous shortcoming in their methodology, I have no confidence that the pittance they say I can send them monthly to be carbon neutral is going to be the best use of those funds. I shall continue instead to pay more to sustainable and regenerative farmers and ranchers as I (in my sixties) remain healthy eating my eggs, cheese, meat and veg. And I shall continue my patronage of one small holder in the faraway land of western Ireland and the faithful Moss at his side.

Thank you Daniel, another enjoyable video. I loved the little birds flittering about ... like they wanted to be in the video. I'm still waiting on my calendar, but I'm in no hurry ... like you said, waiting, the anticipation, it is a good thing too.

    Hi,
I just love to see your videos each month, you’re enthusiasm for nature and generally your positivity for life. As a Dub as we say in Ireland or Dubliner to the the rest I really enjoy the videos as they’re here in Ireland. You live the life I think I would love to live but at least I can do it through you which I I still enjoy doing.
Btw Sligo is a town not a city as it’s probably been pointed out to you by other Irish watchers. ( We’re very precious with our island as you probably have found out)
Keep up the great work and keep pumping out those enjoyable videos.
Happy Christmas to all in Mossy Bottom!!!

So sorry to hear of the back injury! Glad it isn't horribly serious. Farming labor is hard work, take care. Loved the mix of pictures of the animals in the video. And as always your content was thoughtful and insightful. Wishing you a Merry Christmas!

Such a good discussion, thank you. It's almost a daily tuning in to the environment when you're living rurally and dependent on your land for so much. I look at the weather forecast every day. I plan so much around it. Seemingly insignificant things (like hearing the skylark for the first time) are the signals of seasons changing. I never even thought about things like this when I lived in the city. You are so right about anonymity - I find that people are far more aware of each other in the country, but respect peoples' privacy (well, in my case anyway, thank goodness). Living in the country isn't for everyone. But for some of us it's everything, and we will never leave :-)

Great video, thanks so much! About to move to Ireland from mainland Europe for a job, maybe I’ll re-think it and look for a smallholding instead. The part of Europe I am in is just to cold in winter 😏 and too short in summer to have a shot at even 50% self- sufficiency.

Love your videos Daniel, I always agree with you! I moved from a quiet little fishing village on the east coast of Ireland which over the years has become so populated because of its close proximity to Dublin, I missed the quiet walks on the beach and the fields behind my home and all around me became housing estates but I'm blessed because my husband is from the west not too far from your homestead and I feel so lucky to be back in nature and beauty and quietness and even the midges! I heard a saying once that the land will let you know where you're meant to be! Happy Christmas to you

Could you maybe add climbing holds to the interior of the granary building? Would just need some mats. Some folks I know in Sheffield ‘invented’ indoor climbing after nailing-in holds in someone’s basement, to practice for some routes outdoors in the future. Used to go to the walls there myself. Also, Johnny Dawes! Legend.

My husband designed the climbing wall, indoors , at the YMCA centre in Sheffield. Based on what he had seen in Leeds University, the wall was well used.

You might be surprised about the climbing, ask around there are a few clubs hiding in the rural west of Ireland. There are oppertunities to bolder.

I'm sure it's been asked before though can't see anything here but is that Daniel singing over the end credits? If so, would very happily purchase a cd of Celtic folk traditionals (or even your own originals) if you've a mind to record something :) :)
