My wife and I will be taking our beautiful little pal Catgomery for his final trip to the vets in 3 days time. We’ve been lucky enough to have him as our companion for the last 4 and a half of his 19 years. He shall enjoy fresh steak and fish every day between now and then, and as much of our company as he is happy to have (thankfully he is very affectionate and loves to be around us). I can’t begin to describe how much I will miss him, but Mr Gray’s wonderful book has been a genuine consolation to me in the run up to the awful day.

The search for meaning and the view of selfhood as a teleological narrative is no doubt responsible for the rampant neuroses particular to our species. This book is a wonderful distillation of Gray's oeuvre. I've read and (with the exception of End Games) reread all of his books and they are a marvel to me. Some find the notion of a good life unshackled from convention and the confection of transcendent meaning to be to bitter a pill to swallow. They feel somehow reduced should they entertain his thesis of progress as a myth. I for one find it liberating to remind myself that we are a queer beast and the phylogeny of our quirks as a species are apparent in our institutions and drive to construct normative structures which ultimately fall apart through a lack of any objective foundation for their upkeep and our adherence to their arbitrarily defined tenets.

The French poet Charles Baudelaire was also known to be a cat lover and wrote at least 2 great poems about them: "Le Chat" and "Les Chats".

Just read it, an excellent read! Goose, our cat, heartily recommends it and would it two thumbs up if could, but it’s not something he worries about.

I heard that cats need meat to survive. I’m a vegetarian but I feed my cat cat food. Thanks for the lecture. I enjoyed it.

I suppose I must be a nihilist. I find "Feline Philosophy" and "Strawdogs" to be oddly comforting.

From what I have observed cats love sleep and they are utterly ruthless predators.

Only when hungry. They, unlike humans, do not kill to have more when they already have enough. In fact, most animals stop killing when they're fed, are physically comfortable and can reproduce.

Wrong marian, they (cats) kill for (what appears to be) fun.@@marianhunt8899

      >"... utterly ruthless predators."< As are we, though we pay others to commit the brutality. It isn't our fault, the food web is real.

Hm, I feel a bit ambivalent about the message but it was an interesting lecture nonetheless.

Apparently they often get one another's mail which would make for some humourous responses if they have the time or inclination to correspond with their confused respective audience.
