The English explained this - coin clipping. Debasing the currency. The literal creation of fiat money by taking it from other people.
It’s been 700 years and there hasn’t been a lesson learned, huh?

Fascinating insights given here into the lives and tragic fate of Jews in medieval England, interactions and relations between Jewish and Christian communities, the precarious existence of Jews based on royal protection and 'usefulness', and the tensions caused by crusading culture and 'literary tropes' leading to massacres and eventual expulsion. Interesting analogy on the perceived 'value' of Jewish immigrants in medieval times in terms of their fulfilling the societal need for capital lending with that of contemporary perceptions of 'worthwhile' immigrant contributions in sectors of labour shortage. Well worth watching and learnt a great deal. Thank you.

Constantine's Sword by James Carroll is full of erroneous claims about Christian history, Christian-Jewish relations...etc... It's an abysmal work. There are many abysmal works like it.

Fascinating! I’m an American Jew with largely British ancestry. Interesting to think different branches of my family tree were running around England oppressing one another all those years ago. It almost makes me laugh at the absurdity of racism. Thanks for the video!

Welsh and Cornish tin and gold mines that existed before the Roman occupation and as far as I know are stills there but I doubt they do much mining. Welsh and Cornish gold still is today the best quality gold there is. Mining tin smithing and yeah, wool, but they always traded with the continent too and had merchants living in Rome before the Romans themselves had even made it across the channel.

This was excellent. Thanks so much. Fascinating that the Catholic Church took such an Augustinian view of the Jews rather than a Pauline view as set-out in Romans 11, i.e. that the Gentiles were to understand themselves as a grafted wild olive branch and hence not to boast against the Jews/Israel.

I have always thought it possible that the jewelry and silverplate that was used as collateral for smaller loans could be the source of much of the money value of this period. Also, scrap chain of gold and silver could always be utilized, think of our pawnshops today....They purchase broken jewelry and pay for the gold content...

    A remarkable conference....
Unless you think that it goes without saying (although in my view it does not), wouldn't you have pointed out that those ritual murder accusations were pure fabrication, rather than apply the term "saint" to these unfortunates young boys. Besides, as far as I know, the Church Authority never sanctioned this "sainthood", it was only a local thing (in Norwich or Lincoln).
As an illustration of the vulnerability Pr Sapir-Abulafia spoke of : Jews of London were extensively massacred th very day of Richard I's coronation. The same year (1190), the king granted a favorable charter to the Jews of the Plantagenet empire....
A question: Pr Vincent states that we do not know the exact date when the first Jews came to England. In your presentation of the video you write: "The Jews first came to England in 1066 with William the Conqueror" (which was my idea up to now)... Which is which?
