Oh yeah. It's an old sea shanty. Only goes to show you what happens when you give a tune to an incredible arranger and sing it with the best vocal harmony group in history.
This is my favorite beach boys song. I first heard it when I was 14 years old on a miserable Boy Scout camping trip...it helped me through a rough time.
From Wikipedia: In 2004, Pet Sounds was preserved in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." One year earlier, Rolling Stone ranked it second on its list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". In the context of 2019 it seems odd, because pop culture tells us that The Beach Boys are that pop vocal group who did "Surfin' USA", but gives them no credit as pop music pioneers. Pet Sounds was partly inspired by the Beatles' album Rubber Soul, and then when the Beatles heard it they were so blown away they went and made Sgt Pepper. Everyone needs to sit down and listen to this album, all the way through, on headphones, at least once in their life. And not in a reaction video, don't pause it and make comments, just listen and absorb.
LOVE the Beach Boys, I have so many favorites but this one is my all time favorite. You just feel so happy, it's everything. The harmonizing, the instruments, it's just everything.
This song is actually a Bahamian song written in 1916 originally. There is a Kingston Trio version from 1958 which, according to Wikipedia, Brian Wilson hated. Brian Wilson really changed the vibe of the song. The Beach Boys are one of my favorite bands of all time, simply because of the harmonies Brian was able to produce. On Hulu is the film Love & Mercy, starring both Paul Dano and John Cusack as Brian. It is a biopic which the band claim is as true to life as they can remember. I have only seen two things I immediately had to watch again. The live version of the musical "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" and Love & Mercy.
Hey Billy you are one cool dude bro being a super fan of the Beach Boys I really appreciate your reaction to this song I'm handicapped and can't walk very well so music is pretty much my life Stay Cool Man
A Sloop is a sailing ship...the song is about being in port, getting into mischief ...and wanting to go home..On your ship..the John B.....Nice to see the return of fun music...
Brian Wilson (who is responsible for the entire album existing) is one of the most humble, sweet and beautiful human beings ever. A tortured soul but he survived it. He’ll go down as one of the most talented and incredible talents of all time
Love & Mercy is the name of the movie about Brian Wilson. I don't have it to send to you, but I know you can rent it on Amazon. Great movie, I recommend it for all Beach Boys fans!
No matter the song you can't go wrong with The Beach Boys. I love them. This song is so uplifting. I don't know what it is about it. Puts a smile on me every time. The Beatles who?
Sloop John B is an OLD song. The first published lyrics of it were in 1916. It was originally a “folk song” out of the Bahamas. If you want a Beach Boys song with a similar feel, try Barbara Ann.
Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring from the Live In London (Beach Boys ‘69) album is one of the best songs as an example of their harmonies, it’s sung a cappella and the words are great as well
The Beach Boys are one of my favorites. Especially California Girls because I was born in the East Coast in 1999, my little sister was born in the West coast in 2000, my older sister was born in the Mid West in 1997 and my cousin was born in the North in 1998. And my biological father kind of looks like Brian Wilson. Which is Funny cause my father's middle name is Brian. Funny how life works. But i love all of their music ❤❤
Great song from a great band. Paul McCartney said of his one time rival, and friend: "Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys is a musical genius." I and millions of others agree.
If you like the vocals of the Beach Boys, check out some of the classic doo-wop from the 50s. Like a Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons or Dion and the Belmonts. If you ever saw Dirty Dancing, you will recognize some of the songs.
Beach Boys rule! At the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction of the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson said he wanted to make music that makes people happy and reminded everyone that 'music is God's voice.'
My all time favorite song/recording is "The Warmth Of The Sun" by The Beach Boys. So innocent and yet so profound and beautiful. It has beautiful, haunting background vocals. I prefer the mix that has Brian Wilson's lead vocal coming out of the left channel/earphone, and the background vocals coming out of the right channel/earphone.
The original Jamaican verse is "I feel so break up". But the beach boys didn't think Americans would like that sound do they changed it to "I feel so broke up".
It’s a sail boat.... Sloop John B is the name of the boat. “Hoist up the John B sails, see how the main sail sets, call for the Captain ashore, let me go home.” I love this song!
It’s really hard to pick a favorite, but I’m still going to go with The Lord’s Prayer recorded on their Christmas album. The vocals aren’t the best, but it thoroughly impressed me that they included it and prayed it in song.
one song tidal of Beach Boys is called don't worry baby and after that the raspberries song go all the way two brother songs that have the same feeling react to those
You should really check out Jimmy Buffet, Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, or any of his many songs that make you want to escape for a while.
Once you get past the early Surf & Cars song era most associate them with, from Pet Sounds on ( which is the album this song is from) the songs get more complex & interesting. Good Vibrations. Cabinessence, Till I die, Surfs up are worth checking out & anything off the Smile Sessions.
Hey bro I might be able to help you out with that movie. I'm a pretty avid fan of the group, having seen them 19 times live. I have several different documentaries, lost concerts, etc. Let's link.
I's about the sailing ship "Sloop John B" and his time on the boat, which doesn't sound like he had a very good time. Fishing or working on a boat at sea is not for everyone.
@@clunkers948 technically you are correct, as it is the first thing played but watch this and listen at the end. ua-cam.com/video/J1eBS8avHrg/v-deo.html
One of my favorite Beach Boy songs also. Little known fact is that it was song by a guy named Blondie Chaplin. He was only in the band for a few years in the early 70's.
I had read that the song was meant for Dennis. He tried it out but decided that it wasn’t for him - decided to go surfing instead. Yes this became Blondie Chaplin’s signature song. He’s with Brian’s band now and this song is always performed.
Show me a band where all the members sing as good as the Beach Boys and I will give you a 1000 dollars! Never mind, you are just going to waste your time...
This is a simple oooooold folk song from the Caribbean. The Beach Boys just turned it into something else with those ridiculously amazing harmonies!!!
Love this song! When the beat picks up on the last verse that always makes me smile! Beach Boys are awesome!! Brian Wilson is a genius
I forgot they did this. They were one of the few groups that gave the Beatles a run for the money. As the Greatest Band of all time.

Look up the VOCALS ONLY version of this, just to hear them by themselves, the harmonies are so perfect.
Holly Odell I love the music but the harmonies are the only reason I really listen to the song
The Beach Boys came along when I entered my teens, so I grew up with them, love them now because they take me back there.
LOVE the Beach Boys, I have so many favorites but this one is my all time favorite. You just feel so happy, it's everything. The harmonizing, the instruments, it's just everything.
Beach Boys... My go to summer music!!
Boo Kitty same

Carol Kay on that amazing bass. Beautiful song.

Wow, we’re all so stupid we didn’t know that.
I am a big fan. I think my favorite Beach Boys song is, Help Me Rhonda, California Girls is next.
UA-cam Algo: Black people listening to Beach Boys?
Me: Oh hells yeah!
Aren't they so good? Can't go wrong. So much talent.
God Only Knows is my favorite Beach Boys song.
Mine also.
Paul McCartney agrees
God Only Knows and Don’t Worry Baby.
They did many other good songs, most of which people are unaware.
God Only Knows may be one of the greatest songs ever written
Beach Boys! It's white guy soul music from the 60's.
Brian Wilson (who is responsible for the entire album existing) is one of the most humble, sweet and beautiful human beings ever. A tortured soul but he survived it. He’ll go down as one of the most talented and incredible talents of all time
I once had this song stuck in my head for over a year, all things considered it was a good year
Like an Ice cream truck, that's exactly what this song is.
Who doesn't love a song about being drunk on a boat?
This one, in my opinion, kicks "Good Vibrations" butt! "Fun, Fun, Fun" is a great song by them. And, of course, their Surf music is terrific.
Nimitz cruise 1998. I listened to this repeatedly and included it on our MSU dedication tape. Hopefully current sailors know about the MSU?
Love & Mercy is the name of the movie about Brian Wilson. I don't have it to send to you, but I know you can rent it on Amazon. Great movie, I recommend it for all Beach Boys fans!
Beach Boys were the masters of harmony together with Mamas and Papas .......
this song is a folk song, originally done by the Kingston Trio, but re-arranged by Brian Wilson & Mike Love. ---------------WolfSky9
An old Bahamian folk song brought back to life by Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys

The kings of melody
This is one of my favorites, too. I am also very, very fond of Kokomo.
Getting in some good ole oldies now. May have to request some Bob Seger & Fleetwood Mac next.
I love this song!
You should watch the video that Brian Wilson and Al Jardine did a few years ago. I believe it is Al’s son singing the super high part
you need to get ahold of the "pet sounds" album, and listen to it straight through. it is sheer genius.
Billy, youtube has a version of "An American Band" and you need to see the movie "Love & Happiness" with John Cusack.
Love and Mercy
The original Jamaican verse is "I feel so break up". But the beach boys didn't think Americans would like that sound do they changed it to "I feel so broke up".
my favorite from them
If you want to check out a really cool lesser-known Beach Boys song I never see get talked about check out getting hungry off smiley smile album
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes do a genuinely good pop punk cover of this song.
They use the Ramones teenage lobotomy riff in their version with kind of sound similar
He said 'I feel so broke up, I want to go home"
It’s a sail boat.... Sloop John B is the name of the boat. “Hoist up the John B sails, see how the main sail sets, call for the Captain ashore, let me go home.” I love this song!
Love your personality. Carry on!
Believed this was sampled in Forrest gump
So much appreciate you

Don't sleep on their early stuff. It might not be as complex, but its damn fun, very danceable and the harmonies on their early pieces are killer.
Great song great reaction
He's saying 'I feel so broke up'

If you have ever seen Forrrest Gump, it is in there when they arrive in Vietnam.

@@clunkers948 Two different parts of the scene. Fortunate Son plays for quite a bit longer, over more scenes.

Try Good Vibrations if you haven’t already
Surfs Up is the greatest beach boys song - the version from smile NOT the version from the album of the same name
Probably, their most ''obscure'' hit...
not a ton of radio play.
nice song.
American family
Finally someone did a reaction to this. You need to play this with a drink on the beach
Plss react to Seventeen Call Call Call😍❤💎
Love from Belguim 🇧🇪💎👑
Hte Kingston Trio version is more authentic. I like it much better.
Show me a band where all the members sing as good as the Beach Boys and I will give you a 1000 dollars! Never mind, you are just going to waste your time...
You remind me of Tiger Woods. Both of you use your intellect.
cole swindell dads old number plz plz
Love this song, but....what happened to The greatest show on earth reaction?!?!?! C'mon Billy!!! :D
Why is this in the country group? And Billy Joel doesn't belong here, either.
