First of all, the word Bandung here is not referred to the city of Bandung. The word Bandung here is referred to Malay word "Bandung" meaning Chaining two things together (dua benda yg dirangkaikan). This drink infuses the syrup water together with milk. Hence, the name Bandung. And in Malaysia and singapore, this drink can also be made with soda instead of plain water like Indonesia but that is the modern version and not original. This video shows the traditional version on how to make the drink
This is exactly what many need to know about. I see some ignorant ppl go into emotional overdrive just cos they think that 1) the term 'Bandung' is exclusive to being a name of a city 2) a drink 'shouldn't' share the same name as a city & 3) the video makers made mistakes with regards to the origin and/or land of popularity of this drink etc etc. But little do they (the ignorant) know that the term 'Bandung' have the meaning of 'pair' or 'duo' i.e. combining two things together, which gives rise to the name of the drink as explained above. Nonetheless, they can continue with their emotional overdrive while we can go 'Cheers' to a glass of refreshing Bandung anytime! Life's simple pleasures...Sweet~! :)
I'm from Singapore and I love Bandung! Salute u guys for actually making you own syrup, cos ain't nobody got time for that here! All we do is by the syrup at the store, add water n milk. Wala!
I just made this! I didn't have evaporated milk because it's expensive here so I used whole milk, and I didn't have food coloring, but it is so tasty! I've been wondering what to do with my rose tea I got from China and this is perfect! Thank you!
actually malaysian people just make with rose syrup in the bottle and cook it with a water sugar n rose syrup , after that we just combined everything together , rose syrup, evaporate milk, and some water, and add some iceee, but this is cooooll too, thankss tastemadee ! proud to be malaysian
Hi! This bandung rather than using plain water, you can use the bubbly water. Some Malays use this for their wedding ceremony i think. It gives that excitement abit rather just a plain drink. Its a must try!
I'm Malaysian living in Malaysia but it's been almost 2 decades I didn't drink Bandung... thank you for making me wanting to drink this again! btw, your video editing is SUPERB. Thumbs up
I'm Singaporean, and the way my mum always makes Bandung was to just add evaporated milk to the rose syrup and just pour it over ice. No food colouring is required. But then again, there are many other ways to make the drink tastier. Oh, and I love the song choice in this vid. ^.^
This is definitely my all-time fave drink. Except, I just use ready made coloured rose syrup, condensed milk, evaporated milk, water, and ice cream soda. It's really goooooood
One of my teachers had a bottle of rose syrup on the counter and my friends were wondering what you would do with rose syrup. And then I said you could make Bandung with it, and explained that it was a drink with rose syrup and milk. Now my friends think that I will become a bartender. This is what I get for watching Tastemade.
sirap bandung normally served at a wedding ceremony especially for malay race and they will normally add soda for much much better taste. Lots of love from Malaysia. =)
I'm from Malaysia!! And I made Air Bandung when I saw last week's video preview! But instead of rose petals I used rose flavoring... every other ingredient that I used was exactly the same here even the Carnation milk!!
In Malaysia we usually add plain soda / sparkling water in them. Taste much more refreshing especially if drink in sunny hot day. Another Bandung you can try is Ribena Bandung, which is pretty much the same method but you use Ribena Blackcurrant.
What I normally do when I make Bandung is just mix milk and the rose syrup. I go for low fat milk, cause it's less rich than full cream. But a lot of the versions that you can buy (from the markets and roadside stalls) uses ice cream soda instead of water, so you get a fizzy, completely different texture to it. Personally, I prefer the non-fizzy version. Also, if using store bought rose syrup, the colouring is already mixed in, so you don't need to add anymore :)
i'm from malaysia, instead of using water to mix with milk and rose syrup, used soda water and make it bubberly, if you can't find soda water, you can used FnN cream soda or sprite or 7UP. at least that how my family make and serve, hope you enjoy it on a hot day :)
We were going to respond to that comment as well, but you perfectly summed up everything that we were going to say :) Re: the original commenter, trust us, there are plenty of "healthier" drinks on the horizon as well.
okay..First, Bandung is part of Indonesia not Singapore or Malaysia. Second, it was originated from the Bandung city itself in West Java, called "Es Soda Gembira" where you combine the exact same combinations, however with soda instead of water (such as soda water or sprite).
Ok, first, the video never ever claimed (the city) of Bandung as part of Singapore or Malaysia, did they? The term 'Bandung' here refers to the name of the drink, NOT any city! & read carefully, they referred that the drink Bandung is POPULAR IN both Singapore & Malaysia, locally also known as 'Air Bandung'. & second, are you sure the drink Bandung originated from where u stated it to be? I'm very sure Bandung is definitely a SG/MY creation for every locally-born & raised S'porean or M'sian would be familiar with the name. If like you said, that the drink Bandung's origin is that drink 'Es Soda Gembira', how come its name was never made known elsewhere other than its land of origin, yet this name of 'Bandung' is synonymous with S'poreans & M'sians alike? Well, the answer is simple, for the drinks 'Bandung' and 'Es Soda Gembira' are two completely different creations which originated from two different regions, duh!
Avalon+ It is imperative that people should use the term "Bandung" as it should be used for. Bandung is a city in Indonesia. Just because a beverage is called "Air Bandung", it is not a good reason to refer to the drink as "Bandung". You'd make yourself sound like a fool if you said "minum Bandung". That is also the reason why the name consists of the word "air" meaning water, in the first place. Do you drink "Long Island Iced Tea" or "Long Island"? Get it?
Alq 'Imperative'? HUH! WRONG, as the term 'Bandung' is subjective here, depending on context of being used to refer to a drink or a city! It's sounds perfectly OK to say 'minum Bandung' in Singapore & Malaysia, and reason being Bandung is known as the DRINK here, NOT some city. The use of the term 'air' in front of 'Bandung' is only limited to speakers of Bahasa Melayu in SG & MY, & since not everyone here speaks/learns that language, and in written form 'air' means literally air in English. So to prevent any confusion, we simply use the term 'Bandung' here so that is synonymous to all races that the term refers to the drink. Whatever your argument (which is an utter fail), you are the one who made yourself look like a fool thinking that the term 'Bandung' only has one meaning & it has to refer to the city, and that "minum Bandung" is a wrong expression. It's not wrong to all Singaporeans and Malaysians alike. LOL!
In singapore usually we buy the rose syrup, pour a bit of it plus a bit of evaporated or condensed milk and water & ice. The colouring is redundant cos the syrup colour is very strong. Its cool to know how to make it from scratch. My friend loves rose syrup. Thanks:-)
Hey! Im from Singapore too! Just the the other videos in tastemade, this recipe might look weird with roses and all, but its seriously good! I advise you guys to get store bought syrup cuz you wouldn't need to add food colouring usually. But if ur not from Singapore or Malaysia and places were bundung is familiar, then Im not sure how the syrup from your shops gonna taste like. And yes the rest is the same! Evaporated milk and water and yummy !! You have to try this drink on a hot tiring day!!
Living in Malaysia, you can literally get this everywhere, from classy restaurants to a street corner. However, it is super great knowing how to make it by myself :]
OMG. I never knew rose syrup had so much sugar. I usually use whole milk and rose syrup. Its sweeter and tastes more milky. (: Great video anw! I really enjoyed it. (:
"bandung" without milk is simply called "sirap ros" (rose syrup) and is a typical feature at Malay wedding banquets in Malaysia and Singapore. Sometimes we add in lemon/lime/orange juice too!
Syrup bandung, my favourite drink to order at a malay restaurant! Definitely a wonderful malaysian drink to try. Though, we've never really used any food colouring...
To make it taste even richer, you can sweeten this with a combination of sugar and sweetened condensed milk! Tastes a whole lot better IMO. Greetings from Malaysia :)
it's so cute that u (malaysian) named the drink with bandung, but in our country (indonesia) it's a name for a city X3 so i think we have something in common, b'cz both bring something really fun to enjoy ..
OMG THAT IS THE PINKEST MORE PERFECT LOOKING BANDUNG I HAVE EVER SEEN I AM SO GONNA TRY THIS OMG IM ADDICTED TO BANDUNG LIKE SERIOUSLY ITS THE BEST DRINK EVER.
Actually u can mix the rose syrup and water first then pour into individual cups / glass and pour some of the evaporated milk in do not pour too much until the pink colour. This way u dont need to use the red food colouring.
The syrup tastes like rose. Although I've never had this particular drink, I have had rose candy before. The best way to describe the flavor is that it tastes the same as the flower smells. Personally, I really liked it. As far as substituting a fruit flavored syrup, I'm sure it would also taste good, it just wouldn't taste like Bandung.
Singapore has bandung almost everywhere especially in the coffee shops they even have it sold in a packet in the supermarket and rose syrup on the shelves
In addition to rose syrup + eva. milk, you can try addingon soda ice cream, n then whisk everything together with ice until it becomes frothy n foamy. Ur welcome.
This recipe actually uses evaporated milk, which does not have the same sugary content as sweetened condensed milk. I highly recommend looking over a recipe's ingredients before leaving a negative and inaccurate comment. :}
yeah, i clicked on the video because Bandung is a city name in Indonesia so i thought it was an indonesian drink. turns out it's more popular in singapore and malaysia. It's fascinating how our culture here in southeast asia is sort of mixed and bumped with each other hahah
we malaysian sometime add aiskrim soda (i don't know what it call in english) some kind of bicarbonate drink in the end..so it will become bandung soda..very nice in hot weather
hm, you know i never actually tried it like that since the brand Carnation itself is what gives the flavour. but you can try the milk tho. i just think maybe you should top up the rose syrup to compensate the sugar rush from the evaporated milk. OH! try put grass jelly in it too. slice them thinly and make sure you add some of their juices. the malays have bandung like that during the Ramadhan, mostly.
-sweetened- condensed milk for more sweetness. Using regular milk may make it watery basically also due to the lack of density instead of a thicker style of drink.
Bandung is a name of a city in Indonesia, and it's a name of a drink in another country?, so awesome to find out relations between Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. and it's even more awesome that i understand the song lol
O i love this drink! there are now many modern variations of this drink as well as names. i know it with the chia seeds from the sharbart, and sometimes instead of the evaporated milk one wud use milk and vanilla ice cream :) my parents either call it faluda or shaarbeth

Hjjjhh
+Fotokopi FINALLY. Nice job dude! :D
I've been looking for this video series for years! I'm glad I came across it again
Same struggle, but today i found it.
As a Malaysian, I got excited finding this on the channel X3
i am obsessed with tastemade drink vids. i could sit here forever. please keep making them so i don't have to attend to reality.
I had this when I was travelling in Asia. A sweet lady prepared it for me on one hot Malaysian summer day. So heavenly!
Thank you!
We often made Air Bandung also during Ramadhan season with store bought rose syrup.
I'm glad that you made it yourself... :)
I only watch these videos because they are so interesting and pleasing to watch... am I the only one?
is visually stunning. nice to know what bandung is made of.
actually malaysian people just make with rose syrup in the bottle and cook it with a water sugar n rose syrup , after that we just combined everything together , rose syrup, evaporate milk, and some water, and add some iceee, but this is cooooll too, thankss tastemadee ! proud to be malaysian

We have one on Spotify (link in the description), but unfortunately a few of the rare songs we track down for this series aren't available on there.
I'm Malaysian living in Malaysia but it's been almost 2 decades I didn't drink Bandung... thank you for making me wanting to drink this again!
btw, your video editing is SUPERB. Thumbs up
These "Thirsty For" videos always have great music.
Their setting/background music are alwayss soo nice and well thought out! Love it!
Ah I love everything about "thirsty for..." videos. The cultural variation, the music, the presentation, and of course the actual recipe :)
One of my teachers had a bottle of rose syrup on the counter and my friends were wondering what you would do with rose syrup. And then I said you could make Bandung with it, and explained that it was a drink with rose syrup and milk.
Now my friends think that I will become a bartender.

i like the detail in this video, the napkin, the rose petals, sooo prettyyyy
I have to try this! Thanks for the recipe!
Wow, I can drink this while dancing to this song. Never listen to Malay pop before but man, this song kicks.
Woo bandung. I'm so attracted to the beverage.. it's really lovely pinkish colour
I'm from Malaysia!! And I made Air Bandung when I saw last week's video preview! But instead of rose petals I used rose flavoring... every other ingredient that I used was exactly the same here even the Carnation milk!!

What's most amazing about this vid is the Saloma song. Real nice touch.
ahahah you guys even use Malay song.. (thats cute!) :D

I don`t even care that your ingredients are nowhere to be found in my country. These vids are so well made that I can watch them all day :)

Avalon+ There's no point discussing this with an ignorant and arrogant person like you, who probably does not even speak fluent Malay.
Avalon+ would you mind if indonesians will create dish called "Nasi Penang " or "Es sarawak "?
I like how the music is in Malay. I am a Singaporean, and I love this drink!
It taste super awesome. Sweet and sugary with a rose flavor. AWESOME. My Favourite drink ever.
In singapore usually we buy the rose syrup, pour a bit of it plus a bit of evaporated or condensed milk and water & ice. The colouring is redundant cos the syrup colour is very strong. Its cool to know how to make it from scratch. My friend loves rose syrup. Thanks:-)

Good idea!
It's the prettiest, pinkest drink EVER.
As a Malaysian people,I will like to thank you for sharing this recipe. :)

bandung is actually name of the city in java , indonesia
hahahaha but in indone sia don't have drink Bandung
Malaysiaku Dikenali Dunia!!!!! actually there is but just a bit different from this one
In Malaysia, mostly in Johor and Melaka state, we put soda in our Bandung. It taste really great!
its looks super pretty!...im very curious as to how it tastes though?
Syrup bandung, my favourite drink to order at a malay restaurant! Definitely a wonderful malaysian drink to try. Though, we've never really used any food colouring...
haha loved the "close your mouth foodies this is traditional" -- random moments of baby-mini-aggression make me smile :)
My fav drink!
Oh my goodness I love that song playing! And the drink looks delicious too, I have to try this one!!
i'm Malaysian and at first i was freaked out by how pink the drink was. but once i tried it, wow it was so good
To make it taste even richer, you can sweeten this with a combination of sugar and sweetened condensed milk! Tastes a whole lot better IMO. Greetings from Malaysia :)
These videos always make me smile and then make tasty drinks
Originally awesomely done! A fav. amongst the Singas & Malaysian people. Thirst quenching good for a vert hot weather. *slurps*
it's so cute that u (malaysian) named the drink with bandung, but in our country (indonesia) it's a name for a city X3
so i think we have something in common, b'cz both bring something really fun to enjoy ..
I never thought which a place where I born was used for this magical love potion. Looks soothing & vibrantly tasty.
In malaysia i had this mixed with cream soda, it was light and refreshing! Lovely
OMG THAT IS THE PINKEST MORE PERFECT LOOKING BANDUNG I HAVE EVER SEEN I AM SO GONNA TRY THIS OMG IM ADDICTED TO BANDUNG LIKE SERIOUSLY ITS THE BEST DRINK EVER.

My all time favourite! Finally i've seen something from Singapore. So proud of my country! Heheh! ^^
Singapore has bandung almost everywhere especially in the coffee shops they even have it sold in a packet in the supermarket and rose syrup on the shelves
i'm malaysian and i have to say air bandung makes me happpyyyyyy!
In addition to rose syrup + eva. milk, you can try addingon soda ice cream, n then whisk everything together with ice until it becomes frothy n foamy. Ur welcome.
omg... Air Bandung?! now i know how to make a rose syrup. gonna make it for hari raya or puasa...
In India we call it as rose milk.. Children loves it after school
Most of us dont actually put in red food coloring because the rose syrup sold is really red and sweet so we do not add much evaporated milk!
Soda gembira! First i saw bandung like what? Bandung actually is a city in Indonesia. Been in singapore for sometimes but never heard of this one
This recipe actually uses evaporated milk, which does not have the same sugary content as sweetened condensed milk. I highly recommend looking over a recipe's ingredients before leaving a negative and inaccurate comment. :}
So refreshing! My all time favourite drink!
yeah, i clicked on the video because Bandung is a city name in Indonesia so i thought it was an indonesian drink. turns out it's more popular in singapore and malaysia.
It's fascinating how our culture here in southeast asia is sort of mixed and bumped with each other hahah
This reminds me of 'Madu Tiga'. Also reminds me of P. Ramlee.
This looks good, but I think that rose syrup would make an excellent, chilled sweet tea as well.
I like that you can see ingredients for later videos in the fridge.
try using soda water instead of still water, in Indonesia we do that and we call it soda gembira. soooo good! :)
you can also add in Pandanus leaves while boiling the rose syrup for extra aroma. This is what my mom usually do :)
my school canteen used to add in bits of cincau and other things, it feels like you're drinking cendol but it's bandung
we malaysian sometime add aiskrim soda (i don't know what it call in english) some kind of bicarbonate drink in the end..so it will become bandung soda..very nice in hot weather
Here in malaysia, we have ready made rose syrup. You can just mix some with water. Bandung is sooo addictive:) haha
hm, you know i never actually tried it like that since the brand Carnation itself is what gives the flavour. but you can try the milk tho. i just think maybe you should top up the rose syrup to compensate the sugar rush from the evaporated milk. OH! try put grass jelly in it too. slice them thinly and make sure you add some of their juices. the malays have bandung like that during the Ramadhan, mostly.
Me and my parents take a glass then put syrup in and evaporated milk, stir and serve easy completed in under a minute
Very pretty. I love rose water although this drink seems way too sweet for my tastes
could you use rose water instead of rose syurp? This drink looks so interesting.
You should makr Salap or سحلب!
We drink this to warm our bodies during winter but it tastes delicious!!!
The colour is beautiful, but kind of sicken to look at when you drink it... but delicious, very very delicious
-sweetened- condensed milk for more sweetness. Using regular milk may make it watery basically also due to the lack of density instead of a thicker style of drink.
mix a little bit of ice cream soda, the drinks will be great!! Love it!!
Ha! Don't worry, it will be making a triumphant return in next week's Agua Fresca :)
I love like this Indonesian drinks verymuch greetings from NEPAL
RINDU NEPAL INDONESIA LAGI yindunnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!! indonneee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bandung is a name of a city in Indonesia, and it's a name of a drink in another country?, so awesome to find out relations between Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. and it's even more awesome that i understand the song lol
Love these videos, so beautiful and well done... Drinks look delicious too :)
It's perfect for Valentine's Day.
i'm really excited when i saw this drink on this channel 😄 im proud to be Malaysian anyway u guys should do ' teh tarik' or 'ABC' 😂
this is yummy, but if you use whole fat/ semi skimmed milk instead of water, it tastes much thicker, creamier, and yummier :) just a tip!
Perfect song choice!
This looks wonderful! I love the smell and taste of rose, will definitely be trying this out when/if the weather improves! Cheers guys! x
You should put ice cream soda and a dash of lime too..taste awesome!
O i love this drink! there are now many modern variations of this drink as well as names. i know it with the chia seeds from the sharbart, and sometimes instead of the evaporated milk one wud use milk and vanilla ice cream :) my parents either call it faluda or shaarbeth
