As the earliest Category 5 storm ever observed in the Atlantic carves a path of destruction through the Caribbean, we get an update on damage from Hurricane Beryl from the prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, where the storm hit Tuesday. He describes the disaster scenes he witnessed and discusses the rising challenge of extreme weather fueled by the climate crisis. “The developed countries, the major emitters, are not taking this matter seriously,” says Gonsalves. He says the world must dramatically reduce emissions and that the current political and economic system is “driving all of us towards, if not extinction, to a terrible, inhospitable place called Earth.”

Rebuild plans should include at risk land appropriation to ensure no settlement in low lying areas at risk for permanent flooding and sea level rise. Infrastructure planning needs to account the new reality of sea level rise and weather extremes.

Susceptibility to Hurricanes has always been part of the calculus for those living in the Caribbean. What a load of bollocks blaming this on developed countries. There is zero evidence of a link between fictional manmade climate change and weather events. There have been less hurricanes of late so these people pivot to the timing to justify someone else paying for them to live in susceptible places with substandard building codes. Everyone knows there is a hurricane season in the Caribbean and it is the luck of the draw where they make landfall. Expecting there to be no more hurricanes if everyone pays carbon taxes is delusional.

Seriously, as a native Floridan I'm used to them hitting or being near. Every other year at least, and multiple in one year a few times. 2005 was a ridiculous season with a cat4 in early July and a 5 a week after, then multiple more 3s-5s all season. And nobody was blaming it on man made climate change. 2004 we had like 4 or 5 direct hits.

I would just like to point out that here in Ireland we are experiencing our COLDEST summer in decades. In May and June we have had just 3 days about 20 degrees Celsius. Over the next five nights temperatures will fall to 7degrees Celsius. Is this proof that the world is now cooling or is it just a weather event????? I have a feeling that hurricanes happen in the Atlantic on a regular basis. Just saying!
If you take the time pay attention and listen you will seethe the predictions of a warming planet are coming true. When we have this kind of weather even like you describe it's due to the instability of the jet stream and warming seas.It's hotter where I am and the fog over the past twenty years has drastically lessened. We had winter storms that were like none seen before. Just because it's colder where you are doesn't mean the planet is not warming. You cannot take one area and say it's cooler than usual so it must be cooling. Pay attention there is plenty of scientific information available to you. Seek it out get with the program because no of us are going to be spared.

If most of the topsoil becomes fallow and eroded worldwide, crop farming and cattle grazing on a mass scale will be impossible and impractical. We might have to result to eating bugs if that is the case. Truth is stranger than science fiction.

Bro many of the houses in these islands are built much stronger than the houses in trinidad, how do I know? Glad you asked. I grew up in Saint Vincent and the average man builds very strong concrete structure even filling each brick holes with concrete. I have worked in the construction industry in Saint Vincent so get your facts straight. I live in Trinidad 10 years now and I don't think trinidad can take one of these hits because look at what just rain alone does.

Asian countries need to be held accountable too for their role in the climate crisis. Asia has the largest populations and the most manufacturing facilities which uses coal and has poor management of contaminated water.

Climate has Changed? Or does it change in cycles? We record for over 100yrs which shows data. Stronger hurricanes, snow fall, rains etc… have records before the emission boom. The source of hurricanes beginnings are off the coast of Africa or lower Pacific. High and low pressure squeezes. Same with tornado ally in Oklahoma

@robertflores8234 Well what he's saying is true! I'm 40, and I remember every summer being 108-112 on the hottest days as a small child. I live in the South East. We're use to hot Summers. I haven't seen over 107°F for at least 15 years. Most years we have Summers max out in high 80s, low 90s.

The price you pay for living in paradise sadly. It’s about time the Island nations start building concrete dwellings and infrastructure that can withstand hurricanes. Hurricanes are nothing new to them but actually spending money on the people is as the people in power are too used to skimming everything off the top.
