The hard truth is almost all developing countries have this issue whether you like it or not. I have personally been in a number of developing countries, these corruptions are common knowledge. But another painful truth is the importance of money. If a poor country tries to be righteous and make hard obstacles for foreign investments. Government will not have jobs for people, food for people, schools, hospitals etc. Corruption is the painful dark way every developing country has to go through in order to be prosperous.

A "scoop", lol. The US, France, and commonwealth countries have been doing the same thing in every third world nation since said nations gained "independence". Suddenly, western media is highly concerned about imperialism and economic exploitation of the third world, because China is doing some of it 😅. By the way, China does way more to actually develop the countries it harvests resources from than former colonial powers ever did.

@@dr.z8378 That doesn't make any sense. The reality is foreign countries come in and strip the resources while still leaving the indigenous people poor. Besides, it looks as though these indigenous people aren't dependent on money but the land itself.

As a citizen of Guyana, it is my first time watching your reporting and I am grateful to you Ms. Young. With that said, I am extremely proud of your relentless pursuit of the truth regardless of where it may lead. Your reporting has served as an education and warning to those who wish to continue closing their eyes to the decimation of Guyana. The wealthy countries maintain an agenda that promotes plunder and extraction of resources, wherever it may be found. As a result Guyana will be left as a wasteland (repeated history) while it's defenders (PPP/PNC) scramble to hold unto worthless paper whose accounts will be frozen by the same marauders after the deed is done.

I wish to commend Isobel Yeung, the reporter and Michael Learmonth, Editor in Chief of VICE News on the production and airing of this short documentary video on corruption in Guyana.
I am a Canadian citizen born in British Guiana and lived there for more than 4 decades and fought against the institutionalized corruption in my nativeland.
The information uncovered in this video is consistent with what I have experienced and know to be accurate.
Guyana is an English speaking relatively small nation of approx. three quarters of a million in an area approx.. 83,000 square miles that was previously colonized by the Dutch and subsequently the British from whom it acquired it’s independence on May 26th, 1966.
The English speaking nation therefore has a rich history of slavery and indentureship with the two main ethnic groups being East Indians and Africans in a ethnic and cultural mosaic of six in total.

And the truth is, that the former colonizers needed the support of corruptible local officials in their era. And after the decolonization these corrupt local elites were those who came into power. So the culture of corruption was in fact brought by the former colonizers, because systemic corruption was needed to rule the country against its people. And many of these corrupt officials are elected. Why do people vote for them? Because they simply have the right connections to rule the system and candidates who would like to play fair are eliminated.

I lived in Guyana, I was married to a Guyanese woman. I met most of the government senior officials including Jagdeo. I was offered a job to work with him, I am an electrical engineer and former infantry officer. I personally witnessed the former president, now vice president doing a deal to steal millions of aid money from the Canadian International Development Agency. Every police officer and every government official in Guyana is corrupt. I remember a meeting with the minister of the interior to arrange for machinery from Canada to be shipped to Guyana, the minister didn't even bother to hide or obfuscate the request for a bribe. He said that the money must be cash, either in US Dollars , Euros, Pounds or Canadian Dollars. He took a box from his right desk drawer and from the $50,000 Canadian, he put a portion in the box and the rest in his pocket. He said this was for the President and Prime Minister. I remember meeting a corrupt Panamian official who was with the World Bank. At this long tedious boxing extravaganza with all these government officials including the President, Vice President, the Prime Minister and the cabinet, the President was doing a drug deal with the Panamian official. Envelopes and cash bundles were right in the open. When I left Guyana the last time, a customs official stole 500 Canadian Dollars and 200 US dollars from me at gunpoint right at the old Timehri airport terminal. He tried to steal my wedding ring as well. I actually grabbed the barrel of what looked like a 357 magnum with a 8 inch barrel. It wasn't loaded. Then two soldiers with old British 9mm Sterling L3 sub machine guns grabbed me an hussled me to my aircraft on the runway. I can also tell stories about how suddenly the bridge crossing the Demarara River is suddenly closed just for foreigners, unless of course you pay the "tax" to "open" the bridge. They refused to recognize my international drivers licence, and I had to pay $500 in Canadian currency to get my drivers licence. The excuse was that my brand new land rover needed a better paint job, therefore it really was a fine. There were decapitated security guards because they didn't accept bribes, most likely drug smugglers and the corrupt police and army. All the senior and junior government officials I met were involved in the drug smuggling business. I remember an advisor to the "uncorruptable" President talking to me when the Prime Minister was present about how they were arranging drug and gold shipments to New York City. The Presidential advisor and the Prime Minister said openly about how to use diplomatic immunity to smuggle the gold and drugs into the US. Now for a really hilarious bit, one fellow I met showed me pictures of the decapitated head of a former President in a glass box. It was shipped to Russia to put in some sort of museum where they have preserved heads of different heroes of the Communist and Marxist Revolution. This fellow made the box for the government because he had a custom glass repair business. Check this out yourself, this museum really existed. At this tedious boxing extravaganza, the wife of the President was wearing a really big golden snake torc with what looked like huge sapphires for the eyes. She adjusted it and it slipped off her arm, I went and picked it to be polite and help her, and a big black police guard grabbed me and hit me and threw me to the floor and started kicking me. Meanwhile I still had the snake torc, and I ended up twisting it out of shape. The gold was so pure, it was very easy to bend it back to fit her. She motioned for the policeman to take the torc from me. She never said anything to me and just turned and walked away. I remember being at the home of the aforementioned Presidential advisor, he opened a huge safe and started grabbing stacks of US currency and filled his briefcase completely with this cash. He was travelling to New York with his diplomatic passport. I can describe lots more about that hellhole. Cheers from Canada.

@@dreamer6508 I was in Guyana right after that. The twin turbo prop aircraft where the three congressional investigators and the pilot were ambushed and killed was a wreck on the side of the runway. Where you go from the runway to the terminal building, there were bullet holes from machine gun fire all along the walls. I actually bought a short wave radio from an American survivor of the Kool-Aid extravaganza. I still have some recruitment brochures for Jonestown I picked up. Also I ended up catching a lot of parasites, Malaria and Dengue Fever. I was lucky to not get AIDS, when I was getting a Yellow Fever booster at the only hospital in the country, a Seventh Day Adventist hospital, they just rinsed the needles in warm water and reused them. There was only power on 12 hours on 12 hours off, depending on what part of Georgetown you were in. Two of our guys caught Hemophilia, about 10 of us got Dengue Fever. Do not be tempted to ever go to that sh*thole. Cheers from Canada.
