I appreciate your thoughtful reaction and concerns about the Norwegian prison system, particularly your emphasis on the importance of punishing criminal behavior through the loss of liberty, not just freedom. It's essential to recognize that the Norwegian model, exemplified by Bastøy Prison, indeed involves significant restrictions on liberty, and it offers a compelling approach to criminal justice.
While it's true that inmates at Bastøy Prison experience a more humane and rehabilitative environment compared to traditional punitive systems, they still face substantial constraints on their liberty. Inmates cannot leave the island, adhere to strict schedules, follow rules, and are engaged in mandatory work or education programs. Their daily lives are regimented and monitored, ensuring they cannot do whatever they want, whenever they want.
The key strength of the Norwegian system is its focus on rehabilitation over retribution. By providing a supportive environment that encourages personal growth, education, and skill development, Norway aims to reduce recidivism. The underlying philosophy is that treating inmates with dignity and offering them opportunities for self-improvement will lead to their successful reintegration into society. The results are telling: Norway has one of the lowest recidivism rates in the world, which suggests that this approach is effective in creating lasting positive change.
Moreover, the humane conditions and rehabilitative programs in Norwegian prisons help mitigate the cycle of violence and crime. In environments where inmates are treated harshly, the likelihood of them returning to society with unresolved anger and without new skills or perspectives is high. The Norwegian system, by contrast, equips inmates with the tools they need to lead productive, law-abiding lives upon release.
It's crucial to consider that justice systems must balance the need for punishment with the need for rehabilitation. The Norwegian model provides a powerful example of how a focus on the latter can yield benefits for both individuals and society as a whole, ultimately fostering safer communities.
Thank you for raising these important points and for engaging in this meaningful discussion. It's through such conversations that we can explore the best ways to achieve justice and societal well-being.
We Norwegians dont like his name to be named or picture published anymore. Because he wanted to be famous for his act. We dont like him to get that. So if you want to react to that Incident do that in a way that shows respect to the victims and their families❤️ he is quite isolated in prison, even though he doesnt like it. He has not shown sign of regret or change so i dont think he will be released in a while.
He got 21 years with a minimum of 10 years.... to keep (Nor: forvaring). That means every 10 years he gets evalueated, and if not deemed fit for rehibilitation, sits for 10 more years. Possibly for life.
Yeah, after the first 10 years he got denied early release when aplyed for it..
That's good to hear
He well never get out. Never !!!
Every five years, they will reevaluate, not every ten years. But he can apply for parole every year now - which he is doing, and he is taking the state to court every year because he's getting denied. Of course, he loses his court cases, but still...
@@NordicReactions Norway have a new updated anti terrorlaw after recent events, its now 30 years instead of 21. Think it was applied this year
There's a big difference mentally between: I can stay inside my room, willingly, however long I want and enjoy it, and I can't leave this place because some other dude said so and will enforce it if I try to leave. Our minds are our greatest prisons, even for normal ppl, who struggle with whatever stuff.
The verdict gives the impression that he will be released after serving 10-20 years. What is not mentioned in the video is that he can be kept in prison indefinitely if he is deemed unfit for release into society, which is likely to happen in this case.
I just watched Chille DeCastro's video (Delete LawZ on UA-cam) about his experience in jail. What an insane contrast. Imagine being forced to stay in a bunk bed in a room with 70 other prisoners for most of your day, eat junk food, and not being able to go outside to see the sun for 4 months.
Just a story, and it's true. Some people feel more safe in a prison than outside. I had a student, and this was a high security prison built in 1864, that didn't want to leave. He had 43 sentences. He actually asked the prison manager if he could sleep in a trailer in the parking lot and come inside the prison to work and live with the other inmates during day. Not on a sentence, but as a free man. He was actually a very nice man. :)
That context in the start is important!! Bastøy is not a normal Norwegian prison. I worked 6 years in the prison education system here, in 4 different prisons. I have been to Bastøy, Halden and a lot of prisons in Norway and abroad. That intro is important. :)
Two more fun facts about Halden, their TV's are really streaming broadcasts trough a "computer system". One inmate actually managed to hack into the system and got internet access. :D The other thing about the keys, if you watch cloesly there are two locks on the doors, the inmates have the key to one of them, the prison to both. And now I will shut up! :D
The big picture: Norwegian inmates are rarely coming back, and thats the main thing and most important.
They influence many prisoners way of thinking, and many really change their lifestyle. And thats the goal. It works.
I think the main idea here is make people used to a normal life as much as possible, while protecting society from them. The focus is not on what they deserve, but accustomizing them to a normal life as much as possible. Especially dangerous prisoners may never get out because the "forvaring" rules are there to protect society. This prison system do not assume to create punishments that "fit the crime", there are no amount of prison time that can make up for a murder on a balance sheet and then the "dept" is "paid". Any such illusion would put a calculable price on a human life, and that an exercise that may lead to dark places.
That ketchup and mustard dispenser is all over Scandinavia. Would be surprised if they aren't common in the rest of Europe as well (I've seen them in Germany).
They are still in prison in Bastøy, the inmates usually spend the last 3 years of their sentence there.
yes the mass killer got 21 years, it might seem a little short but u missed the part about "FORVARING" it means they can hold him in prison for ever if he dont rehabiletate
Have you reacted to norwegian kindergardens video?
I don't think I have
@NordicReactions They are in prision NOW. (Bastøy Prison) they have NOT finished their time... That's why they are not allowed tro leave the island. I think they say it quite clearly in the video 😃
You should react to prison project little Scandinavia.
That maximum security prison you are refferind to is almost Guaranteed to be Halden prison. It's always Halden and Bastøy that are beeing put out there.
Amd at 17:40, there it is. Halden prison. Been there too, it's always these two prisons that are beeing showed to the world. The last 2 years over 80 correctional officers have walked away from their jobs in this prison. I spoke to an inmate there, who used to be in one of "my" prisons, who said "it's not about the sourondings, it's about the people". And he wanted to go back. Just saying. Bastøy is lovely, Halden, not really that much. And now I will shut up. :D
Dont underestimate being locked up, even with that extended freedom. Your life is still on hold for XX years with no ability to make good income. Establish a family, get a better job or property etc. But that said, we enjoy this system and for the most part its working great. However, the prison system needs to always be on their toes about who really benefits from this rehabilitation and who is just abusing it.
If you are violent and cause trouble, you end up in a worse prison. With less freedom and opportunities. Greetings from Norway.
You have a point there. I am a gamer, I go outside but not that often. Ofcouse I want to see the world but some days its amazing to stay at home.
6 months per kid, like wow... Parents have a life sentence, without their kids. Thats so crazy!
29:15 you would explode if you knew HOW Anders is living in prison!!! He said that his human rights were violated since he didn’t have a PlayStation 3!!!! He has pets in his cell and much more… @NordicReactions
@NordicReactions If you remove entertainment, how do you think the inmates will react and how will their state of mind be their mindset.. Will they be calm and happy? Or will they be easily irritated and often depressed and having "bad days" often... So NO, that would NOT be a good ide, to remove their entertainment..
9:58 When you are talking about some people do also remember that there are innocent people in prison no system is perfect innocent people are in prison.
Are you ok with innocent people being beaten up being R'd being treated as none humans in the prisons?
ABB, the terorist from Utøya is NEVER getting out. We have a mximum centence here now that is 31 years. But we have a thing called "forvaring"...it can be extended for life. I still remember waking up that saturday morning and turning on the news, I still can't think about it without crying. ABB is in ILA prison, totally isolated from other inmates. And he is going to stay there.
Just an edit...it IS 31 years now. They have changed it lately when it comes to terorism. And as I said, "forvaring" can be extended forever...
12:41 you did when you said prisoners should be fearful of being R ed in prison that prisoners should be fearful of being beaten that is treating them as none humans you did that in this very video.
I can't watch those kind of videos, like the ones from the US prisions. Were the guards is beating the inmates.. I don't think the guards is ANY better than the inmates, and I would even say that in many cases they are worse, way waaaaay worse.... I can't watch those videos, because i get so incredible angry.. I almost wanna go there and....... Yeah... It's not good for me to watch...
I don’t agree with your view on liberty and freedom… ( 14:28 )
Your talking about loosing liberty and list up psycologic punishement at the same time say that prisoners should be treated as people. Do you hear your self ?
Bastøy is a fri soning prison, you have too serve a certain amout of time in a regular prison and have good behaviour before you can apply to go to bastøy,Cheers from an ex inmate🫡🇳🇴
