Voted 'No.14 Best Romantic Film of All Time' by The Guardian
Described by director Jacques Demy as 'a film in song', the visually intoxicating THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG pays homage to the Hollywood musical in this masterpiece of French New Wave cinema.
Guy Foucher (Nino Castelnuovo), a 20-year-old French auto mechanic, has fallen in love with 17-year-old Geneviève Emery (Catherine Deneuve: Belle de Jour), an employee in her widowed mother's chic but financially embattled umbrella shop. On the evening before Guy is to leave for a two-year tour of combat in Algeria, the pair share a passionate night. Geneviève becomes pregnant and then must choose between waiting for Guy's return or accepting an attractive offer of marriage from a wealthy diamond merchant (Marc Michel: Lola).
The film was scored by legendary composer and three time Oscar winner Michel Legrand, who went onto work on films such as The Thomas Crown Affair, The Go-Between and Yentl. THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1964 and the newly restored version premiered in Cannes Classics in 2013.
Here on fully restored DVD and Blu-Ray with over four hours of superb extras, including many new and exclusive, THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG is a must-have for musical lovers, fans of French New Wave cinema and any true romantics!

I watched this for the first time a couple weeks ago. This whole movie is like a moving painting that sings
Raise a glass to young love. No modern composer ever captured its sincere, intense naivete better. Including how life moves on. RIP Michel Legrand
@Brad Garner I agree. Yes ! I’d like to mention also Romeo and Juliet by Zeffirelli, your description made me picture the film instantly. What Is A Youth is one of the best songs in the world, of young love and young in general.
Youth Never be pitied.
Pretty.❤❤❤
Most beautiful film ever.
+Yummy_Prosciutto It just may well be.
I consider myself an extraordinary cynic about interpersonal relations, but the first half of this movie, with its iconic train scene and extraordinarily lush & sentimental music that climaxes then, just blew me away. The second part of the movie gracefully recovers from that onslaught, with a nice little ending itself. This is the ALL-TIME sentimental romantic film.
Cynicism’s emotional response be of value, not sentimentalism’s.
Such a great and moving and sad film. Situated politically in the French/Algerian conflict. So well directed, so well cast and acted and the music is superb. Viva french cinema.
kenneth robertson It's perfect.
One of the best films ever made. One of my all-time favorites. Definitely find the time to surrender to the screen and watch this spectacular movie.
legrand + demy... This had to be genius.
I own the DVD of this and just re-watched it two nights ago. A wonderful film and there is no other like it. It was a one and only perfect marriage of music and story.
You must also love The Umbrellas of Cherbourg...Demy's masterpiece.
A Masterwork! I was extraordinarily fortunate to have met Mr. Demy in Deauville in '77. I had looked forward to meeting him again this year. This Masterwork has only gotten better with time (notwithstanding its digital upgrades which are make it superior, still). It must not be forgotten that this was very Brave undertaking; I personally know of no narrative picture that trusts its poetic storyline entirely to an original score, 100% sans dialogue: Maestro Michel LeGrand. Vive la France!
Fashion, Beauty, and Interior Design Combined!
this film and its music are so beautiful. always one of my fav films.

RIP Legrand. You will live forever.
I love this song. It reminds me of spring.
From Cherbourg..... Merci Michel Legrand merci....
Magical film i must rewatch this film every year
That guy is super handsome.
One of my top ten movies ever.
What’s your top ten?
The most beautiful couple in the world

this CAN"T be as much of a powdered-sugar creampuff pastry as Young Girls of Rochefort, can it? that would be impossible, LOL.. and all the people of France are so lean and fit, I'm moving there, forget Asia!
Only an American could have written this. They have so much to learn
