Love theme of this wonderful opera for cinema filmed by Jacques Démy, with music of Michel Legrand. In the main roles, Catherine Deneuve and Nino Castelnuovo
Note the amazingly clever and inventive use of a hidden moving walkway in the scene when they are 'walking' in unison when he has his bicycle. It captures the feeling of 'walking on air' as lovers often feel, and allows us to completely focus on their emotions rather than the physical action. Just one of the many unusual and subtle affects used in this wonderful film.
One of the few cinema "love stories" I both enjoy and respect. The score by Michelle Legrand is exquisite, the visual arrangements meticulous and striking. Truly affecting and ... gorgeous. If you haven't viewed the film, do.
I have to agree. I would say: 1. Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (Murnau, 1927) 2. City Lights (Chaplin, 1931) 3. Les parapluies de Cherbourg (Demy, 1964) 4. Before Sunrise/Before Sunset/Before Midnight (Linklater, 1995-2013) 5. Casablanca (Curtiz, 1942) If we take into account some of the more complex and tragic love stories, I would maybe include Bitter Moon (Polanski, 1992) or Breaking the Waves (Von Trier, 1996) If we are talking same sex love stories, I would give it to La vie d'Adèle (Kechiche, 2013) or Tropical Malady (Weerasethakul, 2004).
It's unique, It's beautiful, the music is unforgettable as is Catherine Deneuve and it will tear you up in the end, and it's worth every minute of it. Not to be missed,
Watched it many, many moons ago, with inevitable falling in love with Catherine Deneuve. Couple of days ago DROVE through Cherbourg; thought of the film and sang "The love theme" all the way! Today decided to watch the film for the second time. It has resulted in a bucket of tears... I am absolutely sure that it is one of the most wonderful movies ever made. What a great man Legrand...
Dear Catharine, What a beautiful films you've made in your life, you're a real French film lady.... This is really sentimental and beautiful music that I had forgotten. What nice to see it again. This love theme going in my playlist France Chansons. "Congratulations on your 70 years" and wish you health for many years. A fan of your Boergia ...
One of the most heartwrenching endings of a movie!! I cry every time!! BTW, I happen to have the original soundtrack in French on vinyl w/ entire script in French & English!! It was my Mom's & I have held onto it, love it!!!
One of the most beautiful movies in cinema history. Films never make me cry, yet this one somehow always manages to water my eyes (I'm a 25 year old man, by the way). The passion behind all the acting, music, mise-en-scène... The pain in Deneuve's and Castenluovo's voices seems so genuine. A true timeless classic, generations to come will be able to appreciate it (my parents actually went to see this movie on their first date).
Soulsister47 in result of this night she got pregnant and got scared of being alone when he departed to war in Algerie, so her mother convinced her to marry a welthy older business man who was very fond of her, though she still loved Guy. In short, she was very young to deal with that situation.
JohannesPaarma I completely agree. Though I'm only 15, I absolutely dislike romance movies but yet this one somehow managed to find a special place in my heart. The music in Les Parapluies de Cherbourg is just so heart wrenching it actually moves me. I just wish I could go back in time back to the Golden Age of Hollywood where romance movies were actually really great unlike the ones today like Dear John.
Although a bit outdated, it still is a wonderful movie; both characters have this profound genuineness especially expressed in the goodbye scene at the Cherbourg train station and the final moving scene at the gas station. Music is timeless. This actually is a must see classical movie.
This was a great movie! It was re-released back in 1996, and I saw it at a dowtown Philadelphia movie theater. Up until then, I had never seen a movie where all of the dialogue sung; especially in another language.
I love the theme song and the music is beautiful. The lyrics of "I Will Wait For You" in English. If it takes forever I will wait for you For a thousand summers I will wait for you Till you're back beside me, till I'm holding you Till I hear you sigh here in my arms Anywhere you wander, anywhere you go Every day remember how I love you so In your heart believe what in my heart I know That forevermore I'll wait for you The clock will tick away the hours one by one Then the time will come when all the waiting's done The time when you return and find me here and run Straight to my waiting arms If it takes forever I will wait for you For a thousand summers I will wait for you Till you're here beside me, till I'm touching you And forevermore sharing your love The story of Les parapluies de Cherbourg is a beautiful, but sad one.
This is an incredible film. I watched in my film analysis class and it is my favorite so far (I liked it more than Kurosawa's films) Demy's use of color is so deliberate; the pallet changes with the mood and the music. Also, notice the color coordination between the set and the character's clothing :) .
I wasn't sure how it would be, as an English speaker who doesn't know a bit of French (outside of "c'est logique!", thanks to Le Boucher), to watch a musical in subtitles. It's a balancing act, to be sure, but the French language is just so beautiful that it works really well. Even if reading subtitles for music can be kind of annoying, it's damn well worth it.
Merci Michel Legrand
Whenever I hear the main tune from this movie ^ (featured heavily in this piece) I get a crazy wave of emotions that ripples through my body. Truly haunting but beautiful.
Only the French could make films like this. Never a dry eye in any cinema or home when this is shown. Legrand's score is unsurpassable and Catherine Deneuve is a woman no man would want to say goodbye to.
I am an avid lover of musicals romance and I believe love is truly the one thing needed so I was shocked and all so thankful that as a child in the 60's I loved these two songs and to find they were from a french musical. What I guess I thought all Broadway musicals were just that . I thank God I got to here oh AL the passion it overwhelmed me to delerium. Excellent thx
This is the only musical I like and what a fantastic film it is. The colours, the music, the story. It's like falling in love with love all over again.
Wow...my ophthalmologist recommended me this movie, so I looked for a fragment in youtube before buying it...I'm drowned in tears....guess he wanted me to really really clean my eyes :) wonderful video!
You can't tell on this, but I watched the DVD version and at 1:10 the red guy holding the umbrella actually scrapes the umbrella across Guy's head and through his hair. It was pretty funny and Guy's actor is a good sport at continuing instead of getting distracted at all.
A rendition of this was recently on the soundtrack for the Korean Drama "Love Rain (사랑 비)" and it brought me back here :3 I'm not a huge fan of the ill-fated love nonsense, but the music is amazing

Is that the witch finder general I can see..............
Le plus beau film
This is the first time in almost five decades that I hear this glorious tune. Legrand was truly a genius!
This film breaks my heart, but, I can't stop myself from watching it over and over. It's so true to what happens in real life romances.
The begining is so beautiful,romantic...like France from the 60's,like open field in summer day...
After 50 years, still belongs to the best three love stories of the cinema.
let me know last two
The other two is debatable.
Haha, thought the other might be Lola :-P
I have to agree. I would say:
1. Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (Murnau, 1927)
2. City Lights (Chaplin, 1931)

This is one of the most magical films I've ever seen. If you are at all enjoying what you're seeing and hearing here by all means see the whole film.
This could be The most beautiful piece of music ever 👍
+Akter Shuvo you are a pure idiot, get out of here!
I am so in love with the music, and loved the film-cried a lot, too:)
This is indeed one of the most amazing romantic french movies!!!!
Unforgettable, haunting performances by everyone in the cast. One of the finest films ever to come out of France.
I I was a teenager when I saw this movie downtown Boston. I cried.
I also saw that movie I was teenager I cried too. Everytiime I hear the song I remember how beautiful young love is and was.
VICTORIA RUTH BERGLAND lucky! Would love to watch this on a cinema as it is one of my faves 😃
While watching it, I thought just how beautiful the french language is and even more so when sung. Ah... gives me goosebumps every time.
I think that Catherine Deneuve is the most beautiful actress of the last century.
That Guy's attractiveness literally transcends time. His looks still hold up even for today.
Catherine Deneuve
I've never seen such a beautiful lady・・・
One of the most heartwrenching endings of a movie!! I cry every time!! BTW, I happen to have the original soundtrack in French on vinyl w/ entire script in French & English!! It was my Mom's & I have held onto it, love it!!!

The voice of Geneviève is Danielle Licari (singing voice of Aurora in the 1981 redub.), and the voice of Guy is José Bartel.
danielle licari sings this. deneuve moves only her mouth
The same is with me although I could be your grandmother. This music, actors got eternal value !!!
Formidable , bouleversant , sublime que dire de plus ...
One of the greatest films ever made. The only romance movie I can tolerate
Although a bit outdated, it still is a wonderful movie; both characters have this profound genuineness especially expressed in the goodbye scene at the Cherbourg train station and the final moving scene at the gas station. Music is timeless.
This actually is a must see classical movie.
- toi tu vas bien?
- oui, très bien.
Fin.
And your heart sinks.
Thank you. So beautiful,no matter how many times you watch it.
*Ah,how many feelings and love ,pain !*
Lovely Catherine Deneuve !!
_It hurts to tears_
Thank you
This was a great movie! It was re-released back in 1996, and I saw it at a dowtown Philadelphia movie theater. Up until then, I had never seen a movie where all of the dialogue sung; especially in another language.
My dad saw this in theaters when it first came out. He said there was not a dry eye in the theater after the showing
I love the theme song and the music is beautiful. The lyrics of "I Will Wait For You" in English.
If it takes forever I will wait for you
For a thousand summers I will wait for you

Straight to my waiting arms
If it takes forever I will wait for you
For a thousand summers I will wait for you
Till you're here beside me, till I'm touching you
And forevermore sharing your love

Beautiful and exquisite classic film singing !.
Heard this song a few weeks ago on the radio show Sleepy Hollow on WXPN 88.5-fm ... Tres belle !
2:38 juste, beauté transcendantale.
Wonderful melody.
He is clearly riding the bicycle standing up and moving it along without even pedalling it.

I love the music of Michel Legrand and have written a piece in his style. It's called Waltz for Mrs K and is on UA-cam.
Excelente filme de amor que as tramoias do tempo separa...São PAulo-BRASIL
I cried for the first time in my life. And I'm very manly.
Magnifique.
Muhammad Taftazani .
A rendition of this was recently on the soundtrack for the Korean Drama "Love Rain (사랑 비)" and it brought me back here :3 I'm not a huge fan of the ill-fated love nonsense, but the music is amazing
French has to be the best sounding language, this comes from a fluent Spanish/English speaker.
