      oh yes it is extremely sad: she accepts this man as king because she has no news from Guy, her mother is ruined and she herself cannot financially support her child on her own.
      A single woman was very frowned upon at the time and it was not easy to raise a kid on your own, even if the French state gave a small grant for each child.
      Poor Géneviève probably thinks that Guy is dead. or abandoned him so she thinks she has no other choice for the well-being of her unborn baby.

    the music after the lines "i have no choice you are my king" and after the mother puts the crown on her head always gives me goosebumps. it feels like this music, which is the theme of her and her lover, some notes from this music are played to show that that love has died. to be more precise, not love but dreams of that love, dreams of the future. it's the exact moment when her life falls apart and when the viewer realizes that everything with guy ended here. it's like the song of a dying swan, forgive me this metaphor. like those dreams die but before they die they will sing their melody for a moment. i hope that all i said makes sense to you and forgive me my mistakes english is not my native language

      I have similar feelings. For me this music is a theme of pure innocent love losing the battle with all the messy reality of life. Sound of the fantasy shattered, and maybe victory of fate. It sounds even stronger and more heartwrenching right before the wedding scene. On the other hand, it's all even more complex when you know the past of Cassard from the movie Lola.

    If anyone wonder what's the deal with the crown: for the
    Epiphany, it's the tradition to make a "galette des rois", a kind of almond cream pie for the 3 kings who gave presents to Jesus after his birth. We hide a "fève", small figurine inside the pie. If you find it in your part, then you're the king/queen and you can chose a king/queen. Traditionaly the youngest kids goes under the table so they can't see wich part of pie has the fève, the adults cuts the pie and says "for who is this part?" and the kid just say "granny, oncle etc..." so it's more fair. But actually it's a good way to cheat and make sure you give the child the fève. Many people have fève collections. They represent old jobs, religious figures but also disney or harry potter caracters for exemple.

We have or had a similar tradition with Christmas pudding in which were hidden trinkets, you got a silver sixpence meaning wealth, or a bachelor’s button, or wedding bells, can’t remember the rest. My mother used to rake round inside the pudding trying to serve us each the most appropriate one!

    Geneviève tombe sur la fève, sa mère lui demande alors de faire un vœu et de choisir son roi : Geneviève répond face caméra, s'adressant à Roland Cassard : « Je n’ai pas le choix, vous êtes mon roi ». C’est donc à ce moment-là qu’elle est condamnée à devenir sa femme, puisqu’à la suite de ce repas, Roland demandera sa main à Mme Émery. La couronne, que sa mère lui pose sur la tête, symbolise le poids du choix qu'elle porte désormais. Cette scène révèle la nature passive de Geneviève. Celle-ci désigne son prince charmant alors que son cœur appartient toujours à Guy. Elle se soumet facilement aux exigences de sa mère et par extension aux normes sociales et de genre de la bourgeoisie française. Cette scène qui devrait être romantique s' éloigne de l’attitude romantique qu’on espère trouver dans un conte de fées.

      You demand a happy end for a film about love?

    • @marinagreco4026
      @marinagreco4026 3 роки тому +16

      it's a film about love but also about the context of the time in France. France was at war with Algeria and a lot of things were called into question within society. The director wanted to show how much war can destroy lives. Thus, Guy is not only wounded but also imbued with bitterness on his return because all his dreams have been shattered by the war. For her part, Françoise had no news from Guy and did not even know if he was alive or not or if he had abandoned her. At that time the civil majority for young French people was 21 and not 18 (the civil majority was lowered to 18 in 1974 only) so Géneviève was a teenager or young person in the film. She is therefore under the authority of her mother like a child (it is therefore her mother who must give her permission to get married before she turns 21, for example, it is her mother who can let her live elsewhere or not and so much other things) . We can clearly see the authority of Géneviève's mother over her daughter when she places the crown on her head to remind her that she has no other choice as king but also the fact that she needs a husband to legitimize his baby.
      I think that Géneviève would have waited for Guy's return if she had not been pregnant or if she had heard from him, even, a letter of promise of marriage and legitimation of the baby after Guy's return. Letters would have enabled Géneviève to stand up to his mother and legitimize the child if the neighbors or others had learned that the marriage would have taken place at the time of Guy's return.
      On the other hand, she has none of these things, so the pregnancy changed everything because Géneviève would obviously be unable to bring up her child on her own in such conditions. There was a lot of social assistance from the state for unmarried mothers or children, but Géneviève could not have lived only on these things. However, nothing says that her mother would have kept her with her because of the scandal since the store is in trouble and the scandal would be enormous. Finally, few people would have hired a single mother at the time. In fact, the director shows that the war shattered the life of Guy and Génevière as it did for many other young French people but also Algerians. This war left many wounds that are not yet healed today.

    • @TheRosefleur
      @TheRosefleur Рік тому +3

      Excuse my english : I’m French The story is sad and probably taken from a true story. Several causes can explain the failure of this love story. The first cause is the Algerian war (from 1954 to 1962) which separates the lovers. The second cause is the sociological context: opposition between two social classes: that of the petty bourgeois background of Geneviève's mother and that of Guy's working-class background. Added to this is the weight of the social conventions of the time (1950s - 1960s): encouragement of arranged marriages, importance of money and fear of “what will people say? for a mother daughter. Geneviève's mother does not compromise because society at the time does not: the future baby must be surrounded by social respectability and a financial base. There is a conflict between post-adolescent love utopia and adult pragmatism. The second wins. Social pressure forces Geneviève to make a choice other than to follow her heart.
