    The Studio Series is really doing a great job if isolated to the series. Titans and Combiners are never in proper scale. I always thought the Core Class was for the titan toys. But you know you may be right as it being a price point thing. Great video.

      Thanks Henry! People seem to have lots of ideas about what these various classes are for - I'm wondering if there is any definitive answer! It's probably what Hasbro decides it needs to be at any given time.

    I say this, scaling is inconsistent, not just between various sources, but also within each individual source, even down to specific scenes or comic panels, we’ve had scaling inconsistencies, therefore I’ve personally been ok with combiners and titans being the largest, dinobots being the next biggest, leaders and commanders and like top ranking generals like Optimus, Megatron, UltraMagnus, Wreck-Gar, Soundwave, Blaster, shockwave, and every triple changer being near this size or larger, and all core bots of combiners, followed by the seekers, and most of the car bots, with anything that was a minibot being smaller still, unless an increase in size made sense like with Warpath who was generally shown to be larger than most of the other minibots, generally like that is ok in my book. Hence why RED Bee made zero sense.

    • @retroandreissue
      @retroandreissue  2 роки тому +3

      Pretty much agree on all points. The opportunity to scale up Warpath would be a shame to miss. What do you think of the core class version of Rachet? It just seems confusing to me. Hopefully they'll bring out a Voyager scale one like the Ironhide that's coming.

      The core class Ratchet is a legends scale (smallest size). Not to be confused with SS86 scale that is mainline or chugs as called by some. SS86 scale is in line with WFC scale (Siege, Earthrise & Kingdom), and now continue to the legacy line.

      Of course they will. The only issue with Ratchet is that he might be an exclusive to Walgreens or Amazon. But Ironhide guarantees that Ratchet's coming soon.

    • @Dragondude2525
      @Dragondude2525 2 роки тому

      @@retroandreissue so, my take on current size classes is basically that Hasbro chooses a character and price point and makes a figure to fit the conditions. Core/legends class is a class that traditionally was designated for the smaller characters in scale with the others, but now is simply just an entry level price point to produce small “cheap” toys for children and collectors as there is a significant third party collector community that deal in mainly legends size figures. Therefore a core class ratchet is only there for a budget release of the character for a specific audience, and a scaled release is sure to come with a retool/redeco of SS86 Ironhide.

    I re-started my Transformers collections just few months ago thanks to Studio Series 86 line, main reason to me was that I always wanted toys that matched what I watched on TV, scale, accuracy were factors that pushed me so hard into getting into this again.
    I have no regrets at all, just want one of each character, that's all, but it has to be almost perfect....
    I am confident that WFC, Legacy and SS are making this possible at last! ... till all are one

    The scaling in old 80's era content is always going to be a bit of a mess, things were just handled differently back then, but you could get a general feel for what it was supposed to be if you were a fan. The dinobots are MEANT to be large, infact when they're introduced to the series, the autobots are immediately taken aback by just how big they are. Scale was a big reason why I started grabbing a lot of these modern figures of g1 characters and, all things considering, I think they've done a damn good job sizing these characters against each other.

    I posted this on some other video from someone awhile back so lets se if it helps you and others here that mind to read it. I can't speak about models BUT pertaining to the show itself and scale, try thinking of it like this - Transformers, as we know run on energone. Those transformers that are fully charged, are much more powerful and capable of doing certain things than those that are low on energone. We also know that certain weapons and capabilities (transforming, flying and special abilities) are not even possible unless the said transformer has enough energy. So all that being said think about transformer like Megatron, Soundwave, Blaster, Perceptor and there ability, when transformed (non-robot mode) to be either smaller or larger versions of themselves. If you apply this principle to having enough energone to vary their size in non-robot mode then why can't others do it in either mode. for example Devestrator appears hugh in some episodes and smaller in others. The episodes he appeared hugh in we were led to believe he would have been fully charged unlike the smaller version in the movie where they were fighting all night and he would have had a lot less energy left. Just another note to add to the energone theory would be how Optimus Prime with stood some horrific blast in some episodes (like Tripple Takeover) and other times he gets injured badly or dies like in the movie (again fighting all night would have left him drained whereas in Tripple Takeover Starscream states that Prime most be on overload).
    That's my theory and it works for me for the series but maybe not the toys.

    I'm a completely different breed of animal, I only collect Masterpieces, mainly 3rd party figures, but as a person who has no horse in this race I find the SS86 scale pretty toon(Sunbow chart) accurate. You're right, there's no definitive scale chart, but there's a general sense of scale and scale consensus amongst fans that's mostly based on the Sunbow chart and I reckon that's what Hasbro uses to determine the SS and War for Cybertron fig sizes. The sense of scale isn't present equally in every person(fan), some can comprehend and others are just ignorant about it completely. Me, being a scale-nazi, have my own idea of how big certain bots supposed to be and that's mainly based on their alt-mode sizes, at least when it comes to cars, trucks, tanks and jets. That means my Starscream figure is al least two heads bigger than Optimus or Megatron. 🤣 but I don't mind that cause as mentioned I prioritize alt-scale over toon scale. I know that's odd, but that's me. When it comes to non-vehicular alts, Soundwave, Megatron, Reflector, Blaster, etc. I obviously ignore the alts and just go by the toon. 😅 As a British, do you refer to Optimus' alt-mode as "lorry" or "truck"? To me it's weird to say "Optimus turns into a lorry" 🤣 even though that's the case. 😅

    • @retroandreissue
      @retroandreissue  2 роки тому +1

      I've always said truck for Optimus. I think I use lorry in everyday speech however! You don't sound like a scale-nazi to me - you sound like someone who has their own ideas but is open to other peoples' takes! Which is where I'm at also. I get a kick out of the SS86 scale currently and tend to avoid things that don't follow it (like the upcoming Rachet). But someone else might not care one bit and quite appreciate a mini-version of a favourite character.

    • @TAURON85
      @TAURON85 2 роки тому +2

      @@retroandreissue One thing I forgot to mention is that in defence of both the Sunbow series and the Marvel comics, at the time and to that point it was unprecedented that a medium had to take so many factors under consideration when the characters were drawn and man such a crowded cast G1 has! In G.I.JOE, TMNT, He-Man, Centurions, the challenge wasn't nearly as big when it comes to make the scale fairly representable cause basically all the characters were human-sized, some monsters were humongous of course, but no way to put them into perspective that can obviously determined, say no-one gets upset over toon Godzilla when he's being drawn 5 storeis tall instead of 8, cause unlike in case of real-life vehicles, there was no reference to compare him to. So therefore criticising G1 media for scale-incinsistency is very unfair considering the circumstances and lack of previous experience regarding the subject matter. No-one ever had to hand-draw giant robots with virtually undetermined sizes before that. 🙂 So that being considered they did a pretty good job, even noticed some scale consistency in the live action Transformer movies more recently, even though they're all 3D and considered AAA big budget Hollywood productions. I believe some of these might be intensional as well, but only guessing of course.

    • @retroandreissue
      @retroandreissue  2 роки тому +1

      @@TAURON85 I would say that pointing out the inconsistency with scale isn't necessarily a criticism - it's just an exploration of how things were back then. If things don't always line up from shot to shot and show to show, well, as you point out they were doing there best! Obviously it didn't matter to me too much because I loved and still love the old cartoons! I think my interest in scale might be to do with the fact that I "sensed" what they were going for - even if they didn't always pull it off, so I've been really curious ever since if there's actually a bible so-to-speak on how tall they should really be? Fun times anyway, I've enjoyed looked at the various material that's been written over the years and seeing behind those behind the scenes images is very cool.

    • @TAURON85
      @TAURON85 2 роки тому +2

      @@retroandreissue Na nah I didn't mean to lecture you at all, for pointing out the inconsistency, it's present obviously and in cartain episodes it's more awfully present than in others, but now most of us fans look at these "extremities" as part of the G1 charm/legacy 🤣🤣🤣. Me myself have gone through many stages of acceptance regarding this inconsistency, obviously as a child I didn't care much, then as an returning adult collector it bothered me to the point where I argued over scale in TF Facebook groups, but learned a lot about myself, the community and the franchise itself during the years. I appreciate the Marvel comics the most, the toon is just secondary canon for me, that alone provided many clashing points as the majority knows and loves the cartoons the most. In my case that's like 20/80. What I particularly dislike is the repaint characters who were not canonically present in the cartoon and comic series and the Japanese G1 series. Those are non-existent to me. G1 ended with The Rebirth. 😑

    I don't want cartoon accuracy so much as (a) accurate vehicle mode to the G1 toy, (b) modern articulation, (c) transformation like the G1 figure with minor allowances for modern articulation and not having removable fists, (d) minor allowances for cartoon differences (Trailbreaker and Bumblebee's faces, Ratchet/Ironhide overall), (e) level of detail and paint apps like the original toy such that I don't need Toyhax labels to make it feel like a modern version of the original toy, and (e) vehicles in scale to each other with the robot modes trying to be close to the right scale for each other.

    This is more of a nit pick and over thinking simple issues. If scale is all you care for then you will be disappointed to hear it's not financially possible in the long run. They may state they will "attempt" to unify all figures from Siege, onward, but inflation, shrinkflation, and skimflation exists. This model/promise cannot be sustained, especially when new leadership could shuffle up at Hasbro. Not to mention retail partners will demand certain scale/size figures per wave. It is disappointing, but how sustainable the promise is, will still be based on the economy. Similarly to how the oil crisis forced the toy industry to make smaller toys.
    Let's be honest, the comic, cartoon, movies, etc... they screw up on scale all the time, much less accuracy between characters in each media form. Some people still want yellow-eyed Optimus Prime figures.
    Just be happy your favorite character even gets a release. So far, consistency of Hasbro's promise of a unified scale system has worked and people need to calm down and not freak out over centimeters of height differences. Until Hasbro screws up the scaling issue like they did with Beast Machines, I feel like most collectors should just relax and enjoy. The past 5 years has been nothing but a love letter to G1/G2/BW.
