This has got to be one of the best videos about electronic music I have ever seen on UA-cam. Had to come back to it today to watch again because it is such a delight.
This tutorial does what so many other beginning tutorials and manuals miss, it is from the position of the absolute beginner. I can't wait to check out the rest in this series!
I came here looking to learn more about drum machines because I have to make one to pass my program certification but this was way more than I expected, a pleasant surprise. I might end up switching careers thanks to this lol
Your tutorial videos are genius! The inspired visuals and your relaxing voice work brilliantly. You've made a frustrated middle-aged man trying to program his first ever drum machine very happy!
first i started making beats on garageband, then i got into guitar and added that to my music, then keyboard and the preset synths included on my starter, now I guess its time to learn this too
For anyone wondering what are the records shown at 1:21: - Peter Gabriel - So - Radiohead - in Rainbows - Billie Eilish - When we all fall asleep where do we go? - Phil Collins - Face Value - Siriusmo - Pearls and Embarassments Vol 01 - Daft Punk - Discovery - Aurora - A different kind of human (Step 2) - Aphex Twin - Collapse - Chvrches - Love is dead - Kimbra - Primal Heart - Haim - Days are gone - Moloko - Statues - The Smashing Pumpkins - Adore Thanks in advance!
As somebody just getting into drum machines your channel is such a godsend- first video I saw was your RD-8 review, your videos are so pretty and good at supporting what you’re explaining like it’s a story- I can’t wait for more in this series :)
I subscribed on the Kraftwerk video but this one is the one I really liked because I never knew how do use garage band to do this. And I grew up on these beats. So finally I might have some fun with my ipad.

The best-quality video I’ve ever seen on synthesizers.
I already knew the information in this video and didn't need to watch something this basic, but, like others, I did just because the animation is so great. Especially the metronome bunny!
I'm not even 2 minutes in and I've already subbed and notified of all your uploads. I LOVE this. Looking forward to telling people about your channel. The production quality is amazing :]
Wow I wonder how I've missed this channel all this time. Granted, it's the first time I am searching for drum machines (as I am about to pick my first one). You sir are a real teacher, this is an amazingly well thought out video. Everything is so much clearer now.
Wow, gotta say... probably the most easy going, creative music creation tutorial page on UA-cam. The production style is an whimsically grounded experience which doesn't simply implores but eases the mind into wanting to learn. Top tier stuff guys!!
This thing is amazing man! Thank you for doing such a wonderful piece of educational content. I'll be keeping on with your stuff. Greetings from Mexico.
Learned this on my own back in the day using the drum machine in Reason 2 but had to watch this beautiful video from start to finish anyway! Great work!
I just love how you guys work so hard on the good production value, and also the info... and those damn wonderful accents. Oh those accents are wonderful. Lol. I hope the followers keep growing, very deserved. 😊
Fantastic presentation. Like the Bunny 😍. My doubt/question: 1. Is the drum machine & midi keyboard similar? I see people play on the buttons in keyboard and the percussions play back automatically when they play keyboard. 2. Is the rhythm pads (4,6,8... Pads, plug to electricity and connect to speaker with ¼ Jack) only an electrical alternative? Like what a digital keyboard is to the piano.
Thanks :) On some drum machines a MIDI controller (keys or pads) can be used as an external input device to live record the notes. But some keyboards may also have a percussion accompaniment that starts automatically, if that's what you mean. I'm not quite sure what you're referring to in the second question, maybe you could elaborate?
@@CaptainPikant Thanks for the response. As for the second question, saw a model “Roland spd 20”. It has 8 big pad, connect to power outlet, played with drum stick.
Just found the channel make and it’s remarkable! The information of course is amazing but your style and visualization are unbelievable. Thank you for this!
Can you guys please do similar videos about different genres!!?!? I love this video so much and I’m more into making hip hop but open for anything and this video helped me more than any of the 100s of videos I have watched looking for simplicity of learning, thank you so much
Wow thank you, that was wonderful ! I would love to see an episode on guitar pedals used with drum machines and also a deep dive into the short cuts of the Digitakt.
Any pedals in particular you're interested in? A Digitakt deep dive is on the radar 😀 We're also assembling a detailed cheat sheet for every drum machine we review, so watch out for the Digitakt review.
@@CaptainPikant Hey thanks for the answer ! I'm interested in Flangers (especially with all the knobs turned to the maximum). Two years ago i burrowed a MoogerFooger Mf108 from a friend and used it with a simple Volca kick and the results were out of this world, when you turn the feedback knob of a flanger to the max it gives you some sort of harmonies to your drum (maybe you can try a harmonizer pedal) almost making it a lead synth. unfortunately I had to give the flanger back and i'm now looking for a cheaper pedal.
This is absolutely amazing. Incredible production value and pretty much the only good lesson on the subject I’ve ever found. It needs a wider audience. Can you work with Bo? Cheers!
Very good. Hope you can keep that quality up for the next lessons. I own a M:Samples and enjoy it very much, however I am only a noob in music, so here I like to get some inspirations on how to make EDMs more interesting, i.e. altering rythms according to song structure, or have fillls and how to program them etc. Keep it up! Thanks.
@@blenderbuch That's correct, the factory content can't be removed on the Model:Samples. But it doesn't count towards the 1GB memory (you always have 1GB of storage for your own samples). But I think the factory content is pretty good on that machine, don't you think? I found it more usable than that of the Digitakt for example.
@@CaptainPikant Yea, they sounds good, but I am always lost into all that samples. In future I will not upload until I need a specific sound (which is also a problem, mostly I don't know what I want/need :) Hence I need to simplify my choices. I have also some own samples (from scrapyard sounds to frogs and birds).
@@blenderbuch Haha I know what you mean, it's easy to get lost... I love making my own samples too! We're currently making a sample pack out of the typewriter you can see in the video.
Just found your channel today (via the TR-6S video) and subbed - so good!! Btw, record with the stress on the first syllable (RE-ked) is an album/LP/etc OR a Rekord, e.g. a world record, whereas the verb 'record' ('aufnehmen') is stressed on the second syllable (re-KOHD). You'll want to use the latter in pretty much any scenario on your channel, including this video ("enter re-KORD mode..." ). Source: former English teacher and native German speaker
Thanks! Haha yes that will haunt me forever. This was the first voiceover I had ever done and that mistake somehow slipped through even while we were editing the episode :)
Your bass kick is actually playing the 'A' note. Does this mean that your base note determines that the song must be in the key of A or A minor? What if your song wants to be in A flat or F? And what if the song has a key change?
Tuning the kick to fit the key of the song is a common production technique. Prince for example liked to tune every instrument on the Linn LM-1 to fit the song. In early hip hop this was almost never done, mainly because the TR-808's kick didn't have a pitch knob (unlike most replicas). But you can also deliberately detune the kick to make it stand out more and rub against the rest of the song. Just do what sounds best to you :)
Thumbs up for the Smashing pumpkins reference. Jimmy Chamberlin was actually a drum machine. Billy Corgan just had to tell him what he wanted on the drums and he always delivered above and beyond.

The Wes Anderson of drum machine tutorials.
I like the bunny!
Stopmotion parts are simply wonderful. I'm perplexed with the high video production value you've got going on here. Subbed

This production is insane. It's so lovely to watch and the information is great as well!
