- Welcome back to our Road to Nationals series! Australia's biggest crawl comp of 2023 will be here in no time at all, so it's time I got organized! There are 7 classes running over 3 days and I've entered 6 of them! Today it's all about the Scale-1 rig, equivalent to the Class 1 (or C1) rigs of other rule-sets.
In this video the Gelande II is introduced, repaired, upgraded and made to tick as many 'scale points' boxes on the handicap list as possible. More points means better overall score in the comp.
Let's get to it!

Great looking machine!
The build is looking good! Looking forward to living vicariously through you as we begin the long, dark Canadian winter.
I'll do my best to deliver! Thanks Chris
Great Scale!!! Naice Details and Mods!
Thanks, it is super pretty so that made it easy!
@@RCTNT 🐼👍
Kkkkkk i love the start kkkkk
Impressive steering angle!
1:08 if that truly was to scale you wouldn't use a stick to prop the hood open, you'd have a small broom, that'd be TRUE to scale! hahahhaa
Haha true enough, yeah! Lol
Though I have used a stick in the past in a pinch...
As I told you over Instagram (btw, nice that you finally embrace plugging it here as well, haha), I'm super excited for this series!!
I do think your receiver box would count as a tank cell?
Careful with that particular exhaust. I fitted that same one to my MST CMX, and maybe it was my unit, but by only "being" there, and not even snug, so it pivoted vertically once it hit on the rear and not lose any departure angle. It looked great while trailing, with the exhaust moving about like a real one... but the support plate which is welded to the main metal tube is not the best of seams, and mine gave up quickly.
The steering angle is spectacular, for a scaler. Even too much for it to actually look scale, lol! But for a "Class 1"-type, it's probably also doable on a fully built 1/1 rig
Suspension, I'm amazed at how poorly those shocks were performing. If you're running 80mm, there's narrow-type coil-over set from MST, the TC80s, which are a bit pricey, but do work really smooth, are a twin spring setup, and come with a few spring sets to tune your stiffness. HMU on IG if you want me to show you more of them!
Quality info here, thank you! Yes, I missed the fuel cell/tank, that's a great point! Thanks :)
Man this looks great!! Until I saw the speed control, I was certain you were trying the new Fusion Pro. Of course I'll probably never be at a comp running those rules, but it is interesting to hear how the other sanctioning bodies set their rules. What is also funny is I reacted to your exhaust location as if it was a 1:1 rock crawler. I made my tail pipe tucked so it exits the rear corner on my Toyota since I saw my friends smash theirs when their truck landed on it 😅. Taking it out the corner makes a lot of sense on a real truck. Loving this series. Also bravo to your vocal mic. Its wind sock was putting in some work and hanging in there 👍
Haha yes that little mic did some heavy lifting in this video!
I'm going to fit the exhaust ahead of the wheel I think, snug next to the end of the slider.
I remember dads 60 series exhaust got a nice half flattening one time and even on my 100 I'd consider cutting it 6" shorter if it was a problem.
Anyway, plenty more comp stuff coming soon and I'm looking forward to sharing it with you guys. Thanks Andy.
@@RCTNT Ah, the mighty 60 Series. The exhaust system got hammered on one of the impressive rock steps (about 0.5 metres high) on (I think) the Oxford Falls track in the northern beaches area of Sydney. I was concerned that I would get pulled over on the drive home with a very noisy (but great sounding 😉) exhaust.
I remember that. From my little kid perspective it looked like you were trying to take her up a bus sized slab, I'll never forget it. Was a good day.
Another great video and love this rig my friend!
Thank you kindly. It's such a pretty truck, it makes my job easy :)
Awesome progress on this. I just picked one up on those Black Friday specials they had. So I am compiling a few parts…. Good heads up on the axle swap! I may look into those BR axles. Loving the rack. I’ve been looking and looking for the right one. Not too many out there for it. I will se if I can locate it on Ali. Can’t wait to see more on this truck! -cheers!
Thanks! You'll love the truck but the BRX70 axles make all the difference. I will say, if you can find steel axle shafts for the original axle housings, that would probably be fine too. I've gotta get around to looking for them myself, I'd expect they're a thing.
If you do the swap, it's easy enough. I just had to pull the knuckles off each end of the axle and then swap the little drag link brackets so everything lined up. I think I got away with using the original links for everything, though I may have added a 5mm spacer to the steering linkage to get the length better set. Simple enough. Cheers!
Thank you very much for your fun comp preview in one of the coolest backdrops on the Tube for rc videos! The rig looks very good. Also, I really enjoyed you going through all the required items for the upcoming comp. As an idea, I would not mind at all a 'RC4WD Gelände, 10 years on' review video by RC-TNT. And I do not know what you have planned with the now taken out parts, but the first thought that I got, wouldn't it be fun to build a parts truck with those? The working parts naturally. Thank you again and am looking foward to more 2023, crawling competition preparation videos 👍😊 Btw, a great choice for your driver figure and a like left!
Now there's a cool Idea to reuse that axle on a WPL D12, a Toy Story Pizza Planet beat up ""Hilux"" or something of the sorts!
I'll have to think about that. I certainly have enough spare parts to make several crawlers here and I have several parts trucks already in various states of construction.
A 10 year review and look back, yeah I may do that. It went alright for the TF2 after all. Thanks for the idea.
I'll tell you right there at the end when you're talking about your shocks, I've just gotten to the point of rebuilding them as soon as I buy them and I put my own pistons in them. I got the idea from one of the other mfgs.
Oh yeah? That sounds wise, thanks
You've done a great job and the truck is beautiful. You've seemed to check many of the boxes you need to give you some insurance points. Are there rules about the total weight of the truck? If not, could you add additional weight to help negate the tall body height? Could you add a metal exhaust system down low? Can you use the wider Boom Racing wheels? I am anxious to see how it performs on your course.
Thanks! There are no rules about weight but it's already too heavy, I think. I've added a silly amount of weight with the wheels and axles. I don't think more would help - every bit of mass you add is mass you need to drag over problems. The sweet spot is probably under what mine now weighs.
I could use wider wheels but I want it more narrow at this point, not wider. (but if you did want to widen it, boom racing make wider adapters to turn the BRX70 axles into BRX80 or BRX90. It's a great system.
Course testing coming next video :)
Love the short wheelbase is this model/edition still available?
Sure is.

It’s a beautiful truck. I can appreciate the scale. But what a disappointment on the axles. It’s not like it’s super cheap to buy ! But there is one thing I’m sure of !!you will have it performing in top condition.
Heh thanks Dan :)
Almost a decade later, only a few rc trucks out there match it in scale realism...
For sure. The BRX01 and BRX02 give it a run for its money. Some of the Cross RC gear too. And the HG stuff. And the Capo cars. But I think that's about it. They're all special and isn't it nice Ti have that choice now!
This rig doesn’t seem to bad they did really well on scale tho
RC4WD has always done 'pretty' and 'scale' pretty darn well. Shame about the pot metal running gear, but yes, they're definitely pretty!
Good show, mate. Can't wait to see how this build performs. It really looks great. The BRX packages in in the back are a nice touch. Overall a well done truck, hopefully it performs as good as it looks.
On the broken hood hinge issue, did you consider designing and 3D printing a new one? Might be a relatively cheap and easy way to keep a few of those on hand as spares (or maybe create a better/stronger/more durable part?) if it's a weak point.
Question... what made you choose the winch you did? Why not the Warn 8274? Was price the deciding factor there, or overall size, or something else?
Also, wouldn't mounting the spare tire on the bonnet lower your COG and bring some more weight over the front axle? Did you not do that because of the weak hood hinges, or was there another reason for putting it up on top?
Hinge: 3d printing a replacement may be even weaker than the pot metal one they have. I'm giving it a second chance and if it breaks again I'll probably fit tiny brass hinges instead or maybe the Boom Racing BRX01 hinge kit. We'll see.
Winch, I just wanted small and easy fit. I've gone with the one RC4WD recommended for this vehicle and the bumper to match.
Wheel fit on the bonnet and I did test it, but it blocked 90% of the windscreen. Just didn't look good and it's a plastic wheel so I shrugged and put it up top. No biggie when the rig weighs so much! (and between you and me I'm 50/50 on using this in the comp, over my old comp rig. I think the old one is much more competitive and with some more mods may be a winner. More to do yet, we'll see!)
@@RCTNT I'd be hard pressed to choose between them, myself. I am really liking this new body a lot. It's just so pretty. But the old one is *also* pretty. I don't envy you the hard decisions ahead of you.
Take a partner and run both! yeah! that's the ticket!
Haha yeah could do. But I'm likely going to enter either my old comp rig with some optimisations or possibly I'll build up my TF3. That is a decision for 2023 :)
🎅🎅😁😁
This looks absolutely awesome, ive only just looked into these. Im looking for a nice rig for trails maybe a few obstacles but nothing crazy. Would this be a good choice? Thanks for the vid (although im late 😅)
You're not late! Rc4wd tends to sell the same models for years, so it's a very relevant question indeed. If you like scale, this is not bad, but it's crawling performance is pretty poor. The TF2 is better. The BRX01 and BRX02 are better again. There are some other decent hard body choices out there, also.
It needs yet another update, but this article may be a helpful start for you:
rc-tnt.com/manufacturer/multiple/what-is-the-best-rc-rock-crawler/
Cheers!
Was there a particular reason you went with the BRX70 axles (which are slightly more narrow than the RC4WD axles) instead of the BRX90 axles (which are slightly wider)? Yesterday, I had a similar break in my Gelande II front axles and will be looking to do a similar swap to Boom Racing axles. The BRX90 axles appear to be closer in overall width than the BRX70 axles.
Hi Paul, yes - I wanted full tire coverage and the BRX70 axles deliver that. Just!
It'll drive better with the 90s I think, but that'll be quite wide.
I think the gelande can be a performer, but not when it's dressed up with such a heavy body here. I'm happy to keep it as a trail machine for now :)
Where did you get the rollcage?
Looks good but helps ruin the centre of gravity a bit! Everything is in the description, linked where I could.
Wheels, Steel Rack, Drive Shafts, Scale Stuff: AliExpress
6:43 $500 USD ($650 cdn) and you snap an axle the first time out? That doesn't bode well for the quality.
Typical for RC4WD axles. If I can find a steel replacement for those parts, they'll be fine. Their pot metal bits have a reputation though, so it was disappointing but unsurprising.
You have a fuel cell
Thanks Tom, a couple of guys have picked that up since I posted this. Nice, free points!!
You said you flipped the panhard , what do you mean by that ? My axles done the same and RC4WD won't warrant any breakages 😡
Had to change where the panhard mounted so the axle fit the car. BTA steering reversed to being in front, too.
Though I've ordered steel axle shafts for the original axles and will probably fit them back onto this car. I've decided to try a different vehicle for competition driving, so I'll keep this one just for trail drives.
What a great rig, love it. Do you know anyone that makes TRX male - XT90 Female adaptor (I have those Ovonic 2s batteries with xt90's, I also have a Traxxas charger ^^, you see my dilemma? no one on Ebay has them, They have what they call female, are male when you receive them) Thanks :)
You can buy packs of the adapters and just solder them yourself. Though I do have some Traxxas adapters on things here, they're my least favourite design. Those flat pins just slide out of the plastic, even on the branded ones from Traxxas. Not a fan here. I generally give those the chop. But what you're after is possibly on banggood if you can't find em locally.
@@RCTNT I'm no good at soldering :( I have messaged Metro Hobbies. I may have to buy a charger that has xt90 plugs if all else fails 🥺🥺🥺
@@jeffparryncc1701 Most definitely on Aliexpress you can buy the combination you're looking for
@@YoShImUrA53 nope, I checked :(
You can chain adapters. Especially doesn't matter for charging. What about TRX to xt60, then xt60 to Xt90?
Also, if you're contacting Metro Hobbies then you're in Melbourne, right? There are several crawling groups on Facebook (I don't use FB anymore but I know there are several big, active groups) and for sure there'd be a few blokes there who have the time and inclination to assist you.
1225.99 at canada hobbies.
Oof!
AUD$1100 locally, if you can find one, too.
@@RCTNT I know there scale looking but holy are they ever brittle.
Yeah they've never really improved them. Axles and link mount points breaking on my Beast II were why I got rid of that rig.
This one will be fine now I've got the BRX70 axles under it. They're tough as nails. The only part I worry about breaking now is the panhard mount. I'm going to make a spare from alu so it's ready to install when this one goes.
@@RCTNT right on I cant wait to see the next video. We are starting a new race series here in the new year with the losi mini B. I'm still looking for a rc4wd bully 2 to build a comp rig like yours.
They still sell them new, so they'll presumably come up on the used market every so often. Cheers!
Hi buddy I just watched your video of your 1580 excavator you did up grades to can I buy those parts on ebay is it plug and play parts I am not very clueie with tech savey stuff 🤔
Hey Shaun, you can comment on that video and I'll still get notified. For anyone else, this is the video: ua-cam.com/video/M5xmmF577og/v-deo.html
I don't know if the parts are on ebay. I linked to everything in the description to start you off. You may have to search a bit if things have changed.
It's largely plug and play but some fiddling is required. I took a small grinder disc to part of the boom for a better fit with one of the servos, for example.
It is stronger but if I was doing it all again I'd probably save up some more and buy the hydraulic upgrade instead. I have a bigger, hydraulic excavator here and it's so much better. I may still do the hydraulic upgrade on the 1580 next year and do another video for it. Linear actuator upgrade does make it better but hydraulic is better again!
@@RCTNT thank you 👍🙂
I really don’t know why rc4wd called this gelande it doesn’t make sense to us brits, because surely that was the Mercedes g wagon but I could be wrong. However it’s a land rover obviously. Those yota axles are poor quality they aren’t cheap! bad Chinese manufacturing.
Gelande is the German word for literally "off-road", and is just the name of the chassis. It's also used for a Toyota 40 series body from RC4WD, and that has no relation to ze Germans, either =)
@@YoShImUrA53 ah that’s interesting thankyou 👍🏻
You're bang on. G-Wagon is their marketing name for its full name, the Geländewagen (or off-road wagon, per the translation), per yoshimura's comment here too.
The axles are nasty, as are the attachment points, like the panhard mount. Really an Achilles' heel in an otherwise brilliant machine.
@@RCTNT and they usually say this is RC4WD finest chassis, lol!
The chassis is great. Links are generally fine too (though I have broken them before). It's just the pot metal they use for their smaller stuff is frustratingly weak. That hood hinge is a great example, it broke the second time I used it. Wasn't rough. Then I have to spend stupid amounts of money to fix with same or come up with a better solution. They're resting on their laurels at this point, a sentiment of yours that I agree with.
Still, it's pretty and that does go a long way!
