- Alcohol before I knew I was pregnant. So you drank alcohol before you knew you were pregnant. You're NOT ALONE.
According to most online sources, no amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy. But what if you didn't know you were pregnant? 45% of women drink alcohol in the 1st trimester of their pregnancy. That is because you wont get a positive pregnancy test until you are at least 2 weeks. Then there are those of us with irregular cycles or that were on birth control or that weren't trying to get pregnant, Those are the situations that make it possible for women not to know they are pregnant until 4 weeks, 5 weeks, 6 weeks, 8 weeks or even more.
It's really scary to know the effects that alcohol can have on a fetus, even in very early pregnancy. Alcohol can cause miscarriage, fetas alcohol syndrome and other abnormalities.
In this video I'll lay down the facts and information I collected from trusted sources.

I think it is worth mentioning that until 9 weeks along the baby is in its own sac and is supported by the yolk. You only start sharing a blood supply when the placenta takes over at about 9 weeks, so people should chill - nobody is perfect. We do the best with the information that we have - if you didn’t know, then you didn’t know.

Omg thank u I found out today I am pregnant but almost every night I drink a glass of wine or margarita
My poor daughter, now 22, has Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmental disorder because I partied a lot in the few weeks before I knew I was pregnant with her. She has struggles her whole life with the symptoms of FASD with no physical signs other than possibly that she looked very young for her age. No amount of drinking is safe and I will forever live with the guilt of failing her.
Most importantly IF you did drink before you knew you were pregnant RESEARCH the signs and symptoms of mild FASD so that you can help your child. The sooner you know, the sooner you can help them become the best they can be even though it is brain damage.
My daughter is beautiful, intuitive, and sensitive but she definitely struggles way more than her siblings.

I’m a 39 year old spending 3 years barely drinking to beat PCOS and get pregnant. I stop stressing and spend the whole month of July on holiday drinking all day, and now I’m 4 weeks pregnant 😂

My mom drank before she knew she was pregnant and I was born perfectly healthy I do have mental illness but that’s due to trauma not alcohol.

I'm not 100% convinced that half a bottle of wine can cause (detectable) fetal alcohol syndrome... I'd put money on the learning difficulties being caused by something else and they're not sure and are just pinning it on that. If the mama hadn't said that I'm sure they would have found another cause - poor mama probably guilty as hell when it wasn't definitely caused by that...

I had three bottles:( I had no idea I was pregnant and prior to the wine I had a bottle of whiskey and prior to that I had beer and prior to that I got drunk with vodka! So yeah shit happens, I was partying and self soothing..: had no idea I was pregnant, prior to finding out I was pregnant I wanted to quit drinking, so I stopped but I’m worried and I guess it’s up to God

Guys I did everything by the book on my first pregnancy and had a baby with a rare syndrome. Second time around, I'm going to chill and let nature do what it does.
Think of the thousands of irresponsible / unhealthy/ unaware people who have perfectly healthy babies ... let's relax. ❤
The week before I found out we had gone on an anniversary trip where I drank so much more than I normally would in any casual setting. I was also drinking rather heavily every weekend, unknowingly, within the first 3 weeks. Of course I stopped as soon as I got that positive line on the test, but I'm currently at 11 weeks and still very worried that my baby has been irreversibly affected.

The same thing happens to me. I find out I was pregnant at 5 months and during that 5 months, I was drinking 1 bottle of wine every weekend. I did end up having a perfectly healthy baby boy.

Had no idea and I’ve been having wine pretty regularly and one night had a lot of wine and a little thc. So I’ve been freaking out and googling and even considering terminating. Also, currently, 1 in 20 babies born in Canada have Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. It is actually an epidemic and these poor kids slip through the cracks in school because they look perfectly fine and can seem to be of total normal intelligence, but have learning disabilities especially in Math, and behavioural problems like excess tantrums. Know the signs and symptoms of mild FASD so you can best help your children.
I wish there was more information on Cryptic Pregnancies where women didn’t know they were pregnant and most definitely drank frequently throughout. How are their babies now? Of course we cannot make pregnant women drink so we can learn but we certainly can study Cryptic pregnancies for these studies.

Congrats. We're happy for you and thanks for the soothing informatio. Too much of the worries seems to be in our head. It's also a misconception that too much stress affect pregnancy.
Once the pregnancy is on the way it takes a very big change to interrupt it.

I’m 6 wks pregnant and I had a margarita. But I haven’t drank since I found out I was pregnant except for today when I had a margarita. I feel so bad now. But I’m not drinking anymore. My boss had a margarita/nacho party. So it was just this one occasion, but I still feel bad and am very anxious that I may have done harm to it

I just found out im pregnant 2 days ago. Im seeing my doctor this friday. Im guessing im like 4 weeks pregnant? So im guessing im like 2 weeks in not 4? Ive been so worried my pregnancy will have issues. Ive stopped drinking when i found out but before then i was heavily binge drinking and a recovering alcoholic so i drank alot. I seriously hope there wont be any issues or else i dont know what to do 😔

Hi guys! I had my baby 3 weeks ago. He ended up being 10 days over due 😅 but very healthy and big lol no issues at all!!!!
I took prenatals everyday and kept quite a balanced diet. Ate eggs on a daily and drank plenty of water

I would say it’s worse if the drinking is heavy and throughout all the pregnancy. Sometimes it’s best to not drink at all! It’s better for everyone.

Hang it there, it’s hard not to stress. I was drinking on the vacation as I mentioned and then on the weekends before I found out. I just had my baby and she’s healthy as can be!
Hi Caela, I’ve just found out I’m pregnant, I’m 4 weeks and conceived on the 9th May (only date the deed happened). I consumed 21 units last week, (spread out through the week, not all in one sitting) without knowing I was pregnant! I’m really panicking and I’m also worried about telling the midwife as she might judge 😭 I’m terrified! I’m not a drinker in the slightest but I had some friends visit who I’ve not seen for years 😢 I don’t think I can go 9 months this worried 😫
@@chemendez9380 Please do not worry! The placenta does not form until week 9 - your baby is still in it’s sac and does not share a blood supply with you. There is no chance you have done something to harm it, just chill :)

A lot of women drink when they’re pregnant before they know. It’s unlikely to cause any issues when you’re very early along or else half of us would have FAS.

I had milk kefir for a week and my bad I have drank in exactly 4th week almost like 40tsp , I just checked with vendor that milk kefir is fermented and it contains 0.5% alcohol
I had my first pregnancy loss now I thought I wouldn’t get pregnant I was focusing my gut health and drank kefir as it contain probiotics and boom here it is again to freak me out

Thank you so much for posting this video! How is your daughter doing now? I read that it takes a while after birth for FASD to be diagnosed, as FAS is the most severe case where the mother drank throughout pregnancy. I found out at 5 weeks. My 2 week wait was over Xmas/NYEs, and there was a lot of drinking, plus a false period right before I found out where I drank. From scrounging web forums there are a lot of anecdotes where early drinking didn't result in problems with the child, but I can't wonder if the mothers who did have FASD children aren't posting, especially considering 1-5% of the population has it.
Also want to ask if the first 6 weeks are "all or nothing", and the placenta isn't formed until later / blood isn't shared, then why is it that folic acid is recommended even before pregnancy?
My daughter is 1 now and doing just fine! I did not know that stat about fasd!

I missed my period last month in may! I feel pregnant and I took a pregnancy test but all three were negative! I am sick everyday and I’m really emotional! I have been drinking every once in a while and I smoke cigarettes. I got my tubes tide 14 years ago so in my mind I can’t get pregnant but I have 6 children so I know how pregnancy feels! I’m sick every day! I told my husband I think I’m pregnant but he doesn’t believe me because we have been together for 6 years and my tubes are tide and in his mind we can’t get pregnant but I know I’m pregnant! He doesn’t believe me so he says babe you want a beer and I’ll say ok I guess because I don’t know if I’m pregnant or not but I missed my period after 14 years of having my tubes tide and my breast are swollen and I feel pregnant! I work at fedex so I’m Lifting heavy boxes all day and I get a really bad pain in the right side of my stomach. I’m so confused because if I am pregnant I don’t want to hurt my baby in any kind of way but I don’t know if I am! I’m so sad because I have no insurance to find out! I just want to go to the emergency room and have them tell me I am so I can have some kinda conformation and I can grow with my baby! If I am I will do everything in my power to stop smoking cigarettes because I don’t want my baby to be hurt at all! I don’t want advice because it won’t help me I just wanted to share my story because maybe I’ll feel better letting strangers know what I’m going threw! Ok I guess I’ll figure it out eventually when my stomach is swollen!

I found out I was and probably arnd 12 wks I drink light most of the time than I may have a few. I stopped one wknd bc I felt funny thinking it was the vodka shot I had but the feeling didn’t go away so I knew it had to be something else.. but I am still a bit worried.. bc after that last and only drink that night I woke up not feeling normal.. I am nervous hoping I didn’t mess nothing up.. my friends who done way more harder shit daily had perfect babies.. I’m just scared even though I drank the first few weeks or so..

3 weeks before i tested pregnancy and it was positive., i had a party today and accidentally i drank a glass of wine, I have never had wine in my entire life, so my friends pranked me by saying that it is grape juice . Will that one glass of wine effect my baby?

Hello! It sounds like you received a positive clear blue test so if that’s the case you are pregnant. Be sure to disclose all the info you do have to your doctor and they can guide you from there :)
I found out I’m pregnant when I was 16 weeks which means my whole first trimester I was drinking once in a while but smoking cigarettes everyday. I have stopped smoking and drinking ever since and I’m now 37weeks I feel good movement and everything seems okay but please help me I am worried about my babyboy

Same thing happened to me, I found out at 14 weeks and was drinking 2 bottles of wine per week. Not a smoker but was definitely indulging in the wine...I'm worried everyday. The stress eats me up. I take comfort though in the fact that our grandparents and parents didn't know any better and probably drank their entire pregnancies and most of us are just fine. I think our babies could be at risk of very mild FAS but I think the severe FAS happens only if you're an alcoholic who never stops during pregnancy. Best of luck to us both and our babies!!
There’s no safe amount off alcohol to drink during pregnancy, I’d say your high risk your child having FASD…. I wouldn’t wish fasd on anyone it’s unavoidable, I’m not shaming blaming …. I do blame health and governments for not making pregnant women aware or teaching this in sex education

This video makes me feel really sad. Its great that your trying to put peoples minds at rest so they dont atress if they have drank before they have found out they are pregnant but research has proven that any amount of alcohol in pregnancy can have consequenses that is why the government have changed the guidelines to say that no amount of alcohol is safe.
The prevelanvce of FASD is so high and thats when diagnosis is so difficult to get, be scary to see the real figures if health professionals were asking the right questions when investigating conditions.
Thanks for sharing your feelings. I do point out the fact that drinking any alcohol during pregnancy poses a risk and to be honest with your OB. Do you think the solution is having an abortion? Most women who are watching have recently found out they were pregnant and weren’t expecting to be.

Hello according to your dates at maximum you would have been about 4 weeks pregnant. This is extremely common that women drink before knowing they were pregnant. Do not worry but share your history with your OB. Thank you for watching and best of luck!
My mind is blown that you are giving information to people without having actual medical schooling. I drank early in pregnancy, and stopped the moment I found out at 5 weeks pregnant. This is 5 weeks from the first day of my last period. I was very early, and my child has FAS. I was desperate to find a video like this when I was pregnant, but you are kind of giving false information.
I am so sorry to hear that happened to you. As I mentioned in my video I was in the same situation as you and looking for answers. As I discussed in my video it is so scary when you drank before you knew you were pregnant because there IS Always a chance of FAS or other abnormalities (bullet point 2). My intention is not to claim I’m a doctor or give medical advice, I actually advise to talk to your doctor. My intention was to share my story and also the interactions with the professionals I spoke with . We’re you advised by your doctor in the earlier weeks that FAS was a probable outcome?
Also I’m really glad you’ve shared your story which is similar to the one I mentioned in my video. It would be great if you could include any advice you have for those women who drank early in pregnancy. Thank you
