The Floater: How Jun Song Won Big Brother 4

- Jun Song, the winner of BB4, is the topic of today. People know Jun as "the floater", but oftentimes don't know what that actually entails. How exactly did Jun carve out a revolutionary Big Brother strategy and use it to win the game? I'm hopeful I'll be able to tell you. This is the story of how Jun Song won Big Brother 4.
I need to give a HUGE thank you to Taran Armstrong, Mary Kwiatkowski, and Jun Song herself for an excellent interview they did back in 2020. It was by far the best resource when it came to inside details I couldn't find from the episodes or even the feed archives, so please go give it a listen if you're interested in an even deeper dive of Jun's game: robhasawebsite.com/big-brothe...

there is something so cunty and motherlike about playing so cutthroat, being hated by the jury, yet still winning almost unanimously
Jun invented new ways of playing the social game because she went along with people. She went along with Dana, had some shields, let them go, and was always was on the right side of the house because she kept an enemy as a shield and let the other people she was working with at the time take them out. At the end of the day, her enemies became her allies, and her allies became her enemies. It's all about knowing how & when to jump ship.

or even better never committing to any alliance 100% with trust from the start to begin with. as she made one alliance she was 130% certain that she would cutthroat that very same alliance if it meant to save herself or better her position. Really, most of the time. I say the best player won. 2,4,6,9?,10,12?,15,16,18?,22,24?. I put question marks only bc some can have some contenders but personally, I feel the winner was deserved. I think that when the best player doesn’t win, is so blatant

@@procastination_is_my_passi4182 This sentence shouldn't go this hard
Jun did nothing wrong with the Scott situation. If someone is that volitile and violent just with someone pestering them, they should not have been in the house in the first place and that is on casting. She did everyone a favor by trying to get him ejected.
Yup scott was a safety hazard. Idk what his deal is, maybe he's emotionally challenged or something, but casting should've screened that before the game. Props to jun for sending him out

Everyone talks about Jun and Alison
But Erika pitching the all girls alliance at the final 6 tells me she was also playing the exact same game…
Except she was definitely fashionably late to the party
mhm
Yeah I think she was trying. But Jun and Alison was voting and poisoning people according to their benefits from the start. Erika was just seeing the flow and trying to play after that. She thought she was in control not thinking much about the two, if she knew she would’ve play differently for sure
But she failed. She stays with her original alliance until the boat sank. She didn't play the same game.
Her ship sank, and she jump on a lifeboat. But lifeboat can't take you to your final destination.
I agree with you, Erika played an excellent game as well. Mind you, when she got nominated for eviction, her super strong alliance and big sister role strategy had her chilling while her alliance rallied for her on her behalf (mainly Jack) and won 6-2 against Michelle (who Jee thought was going to be 100% saved by the votes). She had a really tight and loyal squad and knew when to eject and leave to create a new one when needed. If you didn't watch the season, she had an alliance with the og 8, an alliance with Robert (her ex) and an alliance with the girls as well. She was doing super well, and was just unfortunately against Jun and Allison who were brutal and ruthless competitors
In a way they all were tbh, Jun was just more successful

Some use their brain but don't win and big boss really works on favouritism. And big boss is constantly broadcasted like 24/7 they have even given access to cameras to watch the contestant 24/7. To be fair to Jun, Scott was unhinged already, I rewatched her season and he was already yelling at her and the other members when Jun was still playing the sweet, happy go lucky persona. I don't think she had to do much for Scott to dig his own grave
this cracks me up because it's a common strategy on the show the challenge. any player who hit another player got kicked off the show, so it worked really well to piss someone off enough to get them to hit you
Thats one of the easiest thing you could do, thats not genius. You are just dumb and unplanned if you think thats genius.

I can sense that Jee still loves and cares for Jun. He lowered his pride for her and sacrificed himself without nasty words.
Upon the jury voting, he still voted for her to win.
They were together for a significantly long chunk of time, I imagine there's still love there
I wonder why they broke up
@@sunnyyoda I rewatched the season and Jun and Jee were on their 4-5th year together when Jee's dad got cancer. Jun was working already since she was much older than Jee so she was taking care of Jee and his family and was even made to promise on the dad's deathbed that she would take care of them when he passes. A year after he passes, Jee confirmed that Jun did in fact take care of them really well, but soon the breakup happened, and we could only assume that it was too much pressure on Jun at the time. She even said that she doesn't date Korean men anymore because they are too rigid on gender roles and having a submissive housewife, which paired with the expectations for her to take care of Jee and his family in their mourning must have been such a daunting task to juggle

This is one thing i miss about old reality tv you really cant have a winner like june or a personality like her in any reality tv show. People are smart about their digital footprint and they know how it can affect them in real life in a way people at this time didnt. I love how cutthroat she was even if it wasnt nice she DID that, how can you not say mother??? Taylor and jun will always be my favorite winners
I think what makes it even more interesting, given Jun's career it was probably more beneficial to her to act cutthroat as possible because the career she was in was very cutthroat and had no mercy if it meant results, good results.
Jun and Taylor are my favorite Big Brother Winners for such vastly different reasons. Jun is probably the most underrated Winner. She created the floater strategy and is, in my opinion, one of the best strategists in Big Brother (She knew exactly what she needed to do to win). Her duo with Allison is just so iconic and the fact that everyone so obviously butthurt by them was amazing. Just a pure cutthroat Queen.
Yes Jun and Taylor favorite winners
Omg yes taylor
I like jun more but taylor is a VERY close second
SAME JUN AND TAYLOR BEST WINNERS
I like Jun for the cutthroat strategy and willingness to do whatever it takes, but Taylor’s win is just pure cinema to me. You couldn’t have written a better narrative. Underdog from week one, attacked at every turn, and yet Taylor kept going each time. Even down to the twisting of her initial speech about being a shield and saying she was a sword at the final vote. It’s just an incredible story.
I like both of them, but honestly because their runs are so different and what I appreciate about them is so different, I cannot pick a favourite, because to me they simply aren’t in the same category.
I wouldn't call "justifiably upset that the awful, evil people would be winning money because they shit talked you constantly" being butthurt but idk
Jun and Alison are like the best friends who hate each other but still somehow are always together no matter what.

Jun vs Allison got the Light Yamagi vs L dynamic
Jun Song is the DEFINITION of a underrated BB Player. When I hear people talk about Jun (which is fairly rare) they always talk about the iconic moment of her throwing the Final HOH, or her becoming a duo with Allison.
If someone asks me why I like Jun so much then I'll just send them this video
I think there's an interview with Taran where Jun said that her psych assessment showed that she was absolutely willing to do anything to win and had the smarts to do so. Favorite winner for me by miles.
This is what it means to be smart, man. Both Allison and Jun are too good, and the fact that the Jury didn't like either of them (and they didn't like each other lol). Mother Jun really did that.
Ok I will admit, this video really made me change my opinion on Jun. I genuinely still think her lack of likability is a knock against her game, but I also think it’s insignificant compared to everything else that was pretty phenomenal about it. It’s clear that a lot of Jun’s strategy was intentional, and that she made so many moves that contributed to her win. Honestly, I have to admire how masterful her strategy was, despite how unlikable she was all season.
I still have to watch this season properly, but seeing this video really shifted my perspective on her as a winner and I agree with her being ranked so highly! Well done as always!
What strikes me about Jun's game is that she knows exactly when to be methodical and when to take the big, risky swings. Following Dana to the 3 stooges, peeing in the cage, throwing the last HOH, starting the alliance with Alison--all of these could have blown up in her face and she knew it but she was willing to go for broke.
She's an investment maneger so it makes sense
Jun is proof you can wreck the game without big moves and ostentatious speeches. Wish the dialogue regarding gameplay was less focused on performing and more on actual substance. And Jun was still a great character

One of the rules was that that whoever got the closest answer won, but they also couldn't actually pass the number. So Jun answering 1 million instead of 0 was her outsmarting Allison
The Jun+Allison team up is the greatest game-recognizes-game moment ever
For my understanding Jun is one of the most consistent out of winners in playing their game. Impressive!
He seems like a good dude and I’m glad him and Jun reconciled. It’s genuinely touching.
Wait, who?
@@pettybee3860probably jee
I blame Jun
@@thefoxoflaurels3437😭😭
@@thefoxoflaurels3437 I rewatched the whole season and they were together for 6+ years. During their 4-5th year, Jee's father got cancer and became super ill because of it and Jun was made to promise to take care of Jee and his family when the father finally passes. Which she did. Even Jee said she took care of everyone and was a reliable partner because she was much older than him and already had a job while he was still in school. But I assume the pressure became too much and Jun just couldn't handle it anymore.
Jun mothered so hard, one of my fave winners
Literally mother
She cooked and cleaned 😂
Honestly, after watching this video, i became very OBSESSED with Jun. Like this is my motherrr 💁🏿♀️
Great video! I remember Jun and Jee speaking in Korean so others wouldn’t know what they were saying or something like that and BB put an end to that 😅
Lol the way they both said no to Julie when asking if they would become friends after the show 😅
What better thing to spend time on during a nighttime walk than a BB winner video
How did u comment 20 hrs ago this came out tdy 😭😭

@@lunz4880wait I just realized that… how???
@@lunz4880 membership perk
I can't believe all of them underestimated an investment manager
At end everyone was discussed but none of them where innocent Jun was just better at the game that they where all competing
She reminded me of New York where she wasn’t here for friends, she was here to win and do what needed to be done. And never pretended like she was there best friends
Yeah ill never forget erika saying Jun shouldnt win bcs of "name calling" and then in the same ep her calling Dana a mantroll and being racist towards jee being exposed☠️🤦
This was the only season of the US big brother to be broadcast in the UK. Episodes were shown the day after cbs, on e4. We fell in love. The differences in game play between the British and American shows were a phenomenal culture shock. I loved it. Jun is my all time winner. Great player.
Edit: in fact due to broadcast restrictions and a lack of online accessibility, I didn’t see the US show again until season 18 and I ended up falling in love with Paul Abrahamian, who tried to have a similar game play to Jun; Floater. But his temper and aggression got the better of him. He finished in second place.
Ooo how where they different?
@@danielorlovaquinn because the UK elimination process was dependent on an audience vote, it turned into a popularity contest. So people just sat around, getting drunk and having arguments or being charismatic. In the Uk it was about the viewer judging and observing personality types, unlike in the US where it’s about competition and Machiavellian game play. The UK didn’t have HOH or power of veto, I don’t think, so there wasn’t really a need to form alliances etc. It got very boring, very quickly. In fact I hear the first season of the US is pretty much copied from the UK and it bombed.
@@peteradaniel the first season of BB US premiered 9 days before BB UK, so I’m not sure how they’d have copied the uk. As far as I’m aware, they both copied the original big brother, Big Brother Netherlands, which premiered about 10 months before both of them.
@@nootdraws Yeah, BB UK is the most internationally famous version of the show, so people think it's the original version, but that's not true.
@@nootdraws mea culpa
Kevin Jacobs also played the ultimate floater game. Never actually getting power, but always being good with whoever had the power and making sure he was influencing from the shadows.
Floating in BB is the ultimate strategy.
I'd say it tends to fail more than succeed (cause you really have to be amazing to pull it off). But when it does happen, it's incredible to watch.
the funny thing is that he was trying to win povs or hohs but always kept failing which make his win even more special
@@sabergater174 he knew he wasn’t beating Marty, Gino, Moose and ´em! He had to stick to his middle strategy. And it worked like a charm for him
@@random_jae5886Floating isn't just difficult to pull off, it's risky. As soon as the house realizes that's what you're doing, it's all over!
Props to anyone who succeeds at doing it! A fusion of the social AND the strategic game!
jack was a retired fbi agent & even he couldn't catch on w jun's game play
Floater is by far the most difficult role in any of of these games. It is hard to not be the boss, yet not be a target.
Brilliant analysis -- Jun was easily my favorite player that season, and one of my favorite winners of all time for precisely the reasons you delineate throughout this video.
I love that she was willing to push the limits 😭 she did what she had to and I respect that IMMENSELY
She played the long game, took risks and still came out on top- can I hire her as my investment manager 😭
usually i couldn’t respect someone like this but she really did play the game so well it’s ridiculous. she is crazy smart.
what makes it better is that it's the point of the game. she might not be like that irl
FINALLY some Jun coverage lfgggg
I just realised this after watching tons of your videos but I really appreciate your editing style of cutting to specific person when their names are mentioned. It really helped me map people's name with their faces especially since I did not watch any Big Brother and am mainly here for your analysis.
Wow, wow, wow.
I have never watched a single episode of Big Brother, but damn! This is one of the best I have ever watched on this frickin platform! I could not keep my eyes off my screen for over an hour! You explained everything perfectly, and it just might be me, but the editing is so seamless/effortless/simple? which makes this even better than it already is.
JUN YOU QUEEN!! ❤❤❤
Jun LITERALLY served "Gaslight Gatekeep Girlboss" before the term was even invented 💀
I've never seen a player try to intentionally expel someone.
She's a game changer, what can I say
in 19 Paul was trying to trigger Cody's PTSD and get him to punch one of his minions, but it didn't work.
She's the best example of a cancer I've ever seen. Smart, high empathy, fiercely intelligent, and incredibly ruthless. You are my Queen, Jun
Lol i KNEW she was a cancer. I am a cancer and she behaves a lot like me.
i was confused why you were calling cancer "smart, high empathy" but then realized you were talking about the zodiac sign and not the disease
High empathy? 😂
@@orls9068 Lol have to know what other people's feeling to get under them🤫
@@orls9068 Being empathetic means to understand and sense the emotions of others, which in this context doesn't necessarily mean she used that trait for the benefit of others. Jun wrote an article about her time on the big brother, she doesn't seem like the kind of person to do this to people outside of a reality tv show. It's reasonable as to why she manipulated others since it's just a game and there was big prize money.
Actually I have never ever watched big brother or it doesn't even air in India where I'm from but the whole video just hooked me up. I was all in for Jun, I love smart & intelligent people. Great video 👍🏻
Never watched a second of BigBrother my life but I digested this 1-hour video religiouslly
