No kidding. I knew it was. Then got caught up in narrating and whatnot, got distracted and didn't notice how close I was until editing. Was waiting for someone to point that out lol.
It was a well designed and simple system we take for granted today. And if it wasn't for the PS1 and the fault where you had to stand up the early ones vertically to read discs, we wouldn't have the vertical console trend we have today 🙂
Used to mod PS1s. Never seen this before. Looks like the owner lost the original power cord or didn't like it being removable for some reason. Some people get very OCD about loose cords.
You could be right! If they did lose the original power cord, seems like a lot of work to mod it this way when the original cords are so standard and easy to find. Unless they were like "screw it, I have this cord laying around and a soldering iron" lol.
I'm not sure if plain WD40 is safe on ABS plastic, unless you're using the silicone based one. In the past I've used PVC pipe lubricant. It comes in gel form and stays more put than spray on lubricants. Regarding the cord, my theory is that it was used in a scenario where they didn't want it to be easily unplugged or stolen. Maybe in an internet or gaming cafe?
@@dans. You're correct. Regular WD40 is not good for plastic. The one I used is the silicone one. When I went to show it on camera I forgot I was zoomed in lol. That's an interesting theory. Could be the case 🤔
@@titanrepairs My theory is: Pissed dad put that one there so his son wouldn't constantly loose it when visiting his friend(s) with the console. I remember that my mum gave me a lot of lectures. I was ofter that guy who would loose cables. at least 5 power cables got forgotten at various places.
@@Abauto84 it's for smoke extraction. I don't use it because my soldering iron/desoldering gun station only has one hose input and that's attached to my desoldering gun. And switching the hoses is more of a pain in the ass than it should be for whatever reason. So I just leave it as is lol
Yes. I got myself distracted while filming and wasn't paying attention. We'll use this as a teachable moment of being aware of your surroundings and being safe 🙂
You grabbed that cord without a care in the world. Once you plugged in the regular cord that "tail" became hot and dangerous. So about your question if it should be remove or not, yes, do remove it or block the entrance to the original cord, I know that sounds silly but I'm just talking safety. You don't want to plug in one of the cords while turning the other one into a shock/fire hazard. Now speaking from aesthetics only, remove the added one and leave it original. Now to answer your other question, this mod was more than likely done so they didn't have to fish for a cord every time they need it to use the PS1 as it would be always attached or just because they simply didn't have one at hand and decided to rig one rather than buying one or waiting for one to arrive.
Yeah....I made the careless mistake of allowing myself to get distracted with the filming part that I wasn't paying attention to my safety part. Lucky for me I don't make a habit of grabbing plugs by the pins, plugged in or not. A teachable moment for us all. But believe me I definitely learned from this one lol. That's what I was thinking too. This was back in the day before ordering literally anything off the internet so they probably didn't want to be bothered hunting one down and had this on hand.
That cord they soldered in was electrified when you plugged in the proper cord. Surprised you weren't shocked

@@titanrepairs I was like man they surely didn't put diodes or anything there don't touch that plug it's hot.
I'm amazed at how well the PS1 is engineered and that was their first console. The other sony stuff back then was completely different.

what is that metal rod on the soldering iron for?

Couldn't you have gotten shocked if you touched the extra cord metal pins, while you were testing it with the original cord ? i got anxious.

WTF! you can find a replacement power cord at any thrift store for like a dollar.
You talking about me wanting to recycle the cord? I don't like to be wasteful lol.
