Once i understood this isnt really a monster catcher i was able to fully love what they did here. My first playthrough i made several characters die from the decisions i made and the story was dark with hopelessness and death always felt around the corner. But on this second go around i manage to keep everyone alive and the game story is completely. It have a hint of hope behind it that got me wanting to see it through to the end.
I know it doesn't matter you guys but this is the first Digimon game with a Brazilian localization, and for me this is amazing, lots of people here don't know English but love digimon.
I'm currently enjoying the game. I'm glad I did a bit of research before buying because I would have been upset if I spent $60 and got something totally different than what I expected. It's like a Digimon movie but I control some aspects of it. I'm only a couple hrs in but it reminds me of the original Digimon show with the character personalities, and with the starter Digimon. It also has a darker tone, so it feels like it appeals to kids who used to watch the show who have grown to teens and adults. First visual novel I've ever played (Unless you call triangle strategy a visual novel), and I like it.
I think this is exactly what they were going for and they nailed it. The characters feel familiar but distinct, the setup is similar but fresh, and the darker tone appeals to an older audience. I grew up on the original cartoon and haven't looked at digimon since, and this game completely drew me in.
Thanks for the great review. The ignorant reviewer bombing situation disheartened me. And I really like the game. Cause the advertisements clearly stated it’s a visual novel. It’s like season 8 of digimon. And I love it. You guys were fair. Cheers
The reason why because survive doesn't have an english dub I think it's because, according to the producer, survive was a side game made with a lower budget to make time for the next big title from the main line of games, the next digimon story that has been in development since 2017. But if that games doesn't have an english dub, I won't expect anything like that in the future. But it's not like it's a bad thing, I'm glad digimon game have voice acting in general, and I personally couldn't care less about the English voiceovers.
I would believe that, if not for bandai being very picky about which games to dub. Granted this being a Visual Novel is going to have more dialogue than some RPGs, I believe they still do see the numbers the series gets in the west as justifying a good English dub.
Glad I saw videos and read the overview of the game before buying it, I saw it was a visual novel with srpg elements and I was like can I make choices that affect how the story plays? Yes? SOLD And I'm very glad I did, this game oozes love for the digimon property and takes the source material very seriously. I honestly could tell right from the music at the start screen. I am bummed about the english dub since I feel like I sometimes just want to listen without constantly reading, but the voice actors are all so great.
I've been playing the game for 70 hours, the game responds to everything you expect from it if you are going to live the story. It has so much to enjoy. I think I'm maybe halfway through the game, I think.
Honestly, the game feels like a love letter to older digimon fans. It has the same sense of adventure that the original series did, while carrying a bunch of the later series maturity.
The reason there's no eng dub is cause there literally was not enough budget given. There was an interview which mentioned it as such, survive wasn't given as much budget as they wanted to so they had to cut giving multiple dub and probably a bunch of other things too
This game is a LOT of fun. Yes, I'm disappointed there's no English dub, but I actually found myself just turning off the voices and reading most of the characters' lines out loud (which I can get a little overboard with, TBH, especially with Garurumon)
The fact that you guys aren't biased and say that we have to approach it with an open mind got me trusting this. Im a digimon fan and wanted to know whether it would appeal to me. Id like it no matter what but this review was an eye opener. Thank you.
I swear on everything this game is an atlas touch away from being amazing. If you’re ever played Catherine its very contained, but allows you to walk your environments and interact with it and the people around you instead of just text for hours. It also has very limited environments making it not such a large scale project and still being enough to drive the story. That for me is was this is missing. The text is way to heavy and it’s easy to nod off or just kind of get distracted or start skipping through all together.

There's different endings. So there is a replay value I'm only in chapter 9 though. So hard to tell if there's more but as of now I know for a fact there's at least 2 different endings

The fact that they could ilicit such a response from me is crazy. Dont worry im back to playing it now and im really enjoying it, and now i cant wait to get to my second NGplus playthrough where i can save my boi. Im definitely going to do multiple playthroughs of this game to get all the endings. This is now my favorite digimon media, even more than Digimon Tamers, which was my fave season of Digimon.
I love morality based evo if you don't like it and want to know how I do its simple it implements lure from the show how emotion affect your partner e.g how tai in season 1 became a coward how he pressured himself to fight so the others don't have to and how it evolves agumon into skull greymon rather than its destiny alternative ultimate level metalgreymon another is how marcerus rage turned agumon to shine greymon ruin mode instead of burst mode in savers/data squad its new and fascinating and suits the franchise to a t this should be a key element of one of there main games without a doubt I really want a new survive game after a new world game and the next story game
I think what would have made it better is if it included some more narration from Takuma or a 3rd person narration text box. I hate learning what's going on through dialogue, it feels way too corny. If we're not gonna be given a CG art to show what's going on in a scene, it needs to have narration. VNs like the first two Zero Escape games do this best tbh, I was hoping for that same kind of quality in storytelling from a Japanese VN
People who did their due diligence would understand what this game really is. I immensely enjoyed my time with 13 Sentinels and although Digimon Survive isn’t as thought provoking or deep story wise (so far), basically the same formula was used. I have only played 5 or so hours while waiting for Xbc3 to arrive, but so far, I hope they turn this into a series. Looking forward to playing this game in full once I am done with XBC3!
To each their own. I was awfully bored. I love a great story but I play games, to play the game. This felt extremely low budget and not the “game” Digimon deserved. I don’t agree with excellent. It’s was very sub par for me and disappointing.
@@maxicidesmith4307 it 70/30 but there a time that you can fight whatever you want some time fight after fight but it VN at heart choice have meaning and have multi ending

Also the cutscenes that play during fights are so jank and out of place. kicking boss' ass for the game to stop you to play a cutscene showing that you are struggling for plot reasons is dumb.
When I first heard of this game I was expecting something similar to cybersleuth. And I was immediately disappointed when I saw how the the gameplay was different. But I'm willing to give this game a try since I'm a big digimon fan, and I'm interested in it's dark story.
I bought it because I thought it was a tactical battle based game and it is but it’s mainly a purely a visual novel game and tho I might not like it as much as games like Pokémon I will 100 percent it cause I love digimon.
Okay so here's the thing and I really want someone who's played the game to reply to me. I've never played or watched any Digimon ever. But I read a review of this game that said that the story was up there with the likes of zero escape. It mentioned two others, but zero escape popped out to me because that's probably the best story I've ever played in any game in the first two and mostly the third one. I literally bought the game just now specifically because of that mention. I'm going to play it with an open mind, but I just want someone to tell me if that's even moderately true. I mean I bought it because I almost want to find out how wrong that comparison was, but if it's even slightly as good as 999 or virtues last reward, I will be ridiculously happy with the purchase. Thanks in advance.
the story is great but the battles aren’t as hard as i would have liked but you can still change the difficulty before every battle so thats nice too and the characters feel like actual people and have normal reactions to the events that happen in the story but if you aren’t into visual novels or don’t really like to read it will get pretty boring other than that probably a 9/10 game for me
@@yo-kaikid1925 oh I definitely like to read. That's why I said the zero escape series being compared to this is what sold me. That entire series is essentially three visual novels with puzzle solving.
I finish the game, the pro my review is the story really good and the tactical battle also engaging but only in hard deficulty, on normal deficulty and below technically you can just swoop in without grinding, the composition of the game is text 60 percent and tactical 40 percent that you can go by free battle and story and personally this vibe reminding me of shin megami tensei devil survivor series, fire emblem GBA, and final fantasy tactic both GBA PS1 and PSP, if you feel the battle pretty hard the dev pretty kind allow you to restart the battle so it's good for new player. During conversation for raising characters affection level you can also save because this is visual novel so no worry if you pick wrong decisions just go reload the save. The con is the negotiation system make the game easier for players to get digimon but also make grinding to find evolution item for digimon almost pointless lucky not all digimon appear in encounter, because it's visual novel mean it's not for everybody because you need a constantly reading the text and conversations
Atleast someone does an positive review of digimon survive, i do understand for the negative reactions for it but it was pretty much said that it was going to be an darker game than normal digimon games.
I must say, even though the battle system is pretty average, and can be said as boring. The way the story is narrated makes up for it. The horror elements do catch me off-guard at the beginning, just like the characters that are in the game. But as the story progresses, it gets really interesting. It could do without the battle segments though, but I guess they probably had predicted it, so players can always reduce the difficulty of the battles so there is no need to grind levels just to defeat bosses. Great for players who are interested in the storyline.
A game like this is an acquired taste. It may seem strange at first but the more you try the more likely you're going to go for another bite. Still, its gonna come down to if you can forgive the fact that you can't control the growth and evolution of your Digimon. Half the fun of the old games was the fact that you attained these digital pets, raised them, took care of them, trained them, then watched them grow and become even greater versions of themselves becoming far beyond what you imagined them to be. The story in older games was a little less important than the Digimon themselves and this game takes the opposite approach. So while it's probably a great game overall, old fans are gonna be slow to try this new way of doing things.
That's because Digimon Survive is targeted at the people who grew up with the anime, specifically Adventure 01 and 02. Not the fans of the World videogames and V pets.
I personally couldn't stand Cybersleuth or Hackers Memory. For me this game has been nothing short of fantastic. Sure i could deal with a little less novel but the story is well told and i adore the dark tones. I do wish I could play a certain way and still manage to keep everyone alive. My choices will take away some of my faves :(
I bought it on release and played 3 of 4 routes (including truth ending) and I have to say, the replay value is kinda... low. The story stays mostly same for first half no matter the path and there are not much Digimon and their digi-evolution branches to keep changes things interesting. I honestly couldn't much by 3rd route and just kept going auto battle to story get going and don't think I will finish all routes.
"The Japanese voice acting isn't bad don't get me wrong" and this is what was meant to be said after. "but voice acting quality goes out the window entirely when it's in a language the consumer doesn't know. They might as well be playing on voice volume off entirely" This is a reality.
I definitely enjoyed the game, but was a little disappointed in the fact that the second half wasn’t quite as dark and gloomy as the first half. The school area was fantastic and creepy, and then being stalked by Fangmon you did feel a sense of dread, and decisions did seem to make a difference, like whether Minoru was captured or whether you went with Kaito, but I feel like those big decisions seemed to taper off later on until you got to choose your story branch. I didn’t really have anyone die and whilst I wouldn’t want them to, I would have preferred if there were more options that could have lead to deaths rather than just endings. My ending didn’t include any. Also was a bit annoyed at how on a second play through when you can save the people that are killed in play through 1 that the story doesn’t change. Without spoiling but one death is quite barbaric and sends the kids down a much darker road where they distrust their Digimon and leads to major callings out, but then on palythrougj 2 when you prevent that, they still go down that same storyline despite that major death not happening…just that they say it could have. I would have liked a second play through to break away from the story and give an alternate view of the world with all the survivors. That’s my only gripe though. That and a proper Digimon final boss would have been nice Was a great story and would love more games like this.
I don't get it though cyber sleuth was so popular why not just release more that being said I'm enjoying my time in survive and I'm really loving the more mature story of this.
The story is great, but conveying it as a visual novel killed it for me; it really kills the pacing for me. The story is too epic for a visual novel imo. I want full blown final fantasy level stuff, or even stuff like Persona 5 for showing the story. The gameplay is fine, but there's not enough of it. Also, yes, why isn't there an english dub?
Was pretty bored with this title… up until *spoilers* Ryo dies… and then things pick up and then Shuuji died(poor lopmon) and then it gets very interesting!
Thanks God there are only japanese voices instead of a cringey english dub. English dub should be available as free DLC for people who like it, while japanese voices should be included by default in these kind of games, not the other way around.
Everywhere I look, I see people attempting hate crimes against Digimon Survive. Like Quistis said in that parody video, "It's not as good as FF6 or 7. Just roll with it, OK!". Similar principle applies and y'all weeaboos know exactly what I mean.
So far I like the game chapter 4 in now. I just wish the combat was more fun and the graphics were better, that wouldnt have affected the visual novel part. They did a good game just with an indie budget and full priced. Thats my biggest gripe with the game, but I am enjoying it more than other 60$ games so i cant complain.
All the weeaboos complaining about Survive being a VN never played Sakura Wars V. This game is like Sakura Taisen, but with Digimon which isn't a problem for me.
The only weeb here is you. Tbh first trailer advertised it as a turn base rpg.. turns out it's 80% text . Yet you spam comments calling others weebs = definition of a weeb
Love when reviewers get too high and mighty and speak for the finances behind the game. Claiming Digimon should've had English VO because it's a big enough IP to have the money for it is just SUCH a shitty, self centered accusation. As if you know what happened during the development and why decisions were and were not made. Maybe don't speak on the behalf of others you have no insight into the minds of. Yeah?
Cyber sleuth and survive should never be mentioned in the same sentence. The former is an amazing digimon game and the later isn’t even a game. I hope this terrible release won’t keep us from future releases…
My only problem with this game is the battle graphic it just feels like a moble game to me. everything else is great, not including the price that's just gutsy with out the dubb opinion or other stander feature.
I won't lie... I'm disappointed that we aren't getting a game more like Digimon World, which is arguably the best game the franchise has produced. And the combat here seems janky and unpolished. Ultimately though, this is something I'm happy to cough up $60 for and I'm looking forward to what comes next.
Not my style of game. I don’t care for visual novel style. I like RPG’s though. So I’ll wait for a sale if anything. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is amazing though.
While I'm really looking forward to this, they seem to have really missed a chance to dethrone Pokémon by bringing out more solid RPGs. It's baffling as the lore and characters already exist so they just need to build on that.
I don't think bandai really bother to compete with pokemon anymore. And let's be clear pokemon game will always sell well no mater how shit the game. Bandai Namco and Digimon was more of try something new so there fan don't feel burn our because the same fomula over and over again. Also if you want more of Story series they alredy work for the game maybe in 2023 or 2025 they will announce the game.
The digimon world games really fits well for digimon going from a blob to a 12 foot knight with the ability to see through time. The way they've gone about digimon world games in the past have literally made the most replayable games on the playstation just because you can utilise the thousands of evolutions each with very unique ways to obtain and have stat training to diversify your digis even further. Imagine this but modernised. Survive is still a neat game but it probably would've been better for it to have been an animated shows since that brings more fans in more easily
Ok top digimon games 1.Digimon adventure (2013) 2.Digimon world redigitized decoded 3.Digimon Survive 4.Digimon World 5.Digimon spirits 1&2. Everything else is garbage. We were so desperate and loyal to digimon that we lied to ourselves about cyber sleuth and hackers.
@@supahaze569 nah I'm just being too real. Bro have you played the games that I just listed. Digimon adventure 2013 was a fucking master piece.
@@martyfinley6349 you will probably like this then
I finish the game, the pro my review is the story really good and the tactical battle also engaging but only in hard deficulty, on normal deficulty and below technically you can just swoop in without grinding, the composition of the game is text 60 percent and tactical 40 percent that you can go by free battle and story and personally this vibe reminding me of shin megami tensei devil survivor series, fire emblem GBA, and final fantasy tactic both GBA PS1 and PSP, if you feel the battle pretty hard the dev pretty kind allow you to restart the battle so it's good for new player.
I think calling tactical 40% is too high. There are not much interesting actions and most battles stay similar.
Good review. if you play game in 3 route and Ng+ , it have an exciting charactor story. Death - karma - affinity is good content.
Atleast someone does an positive review of digimon survive, i do understand for the negative reactions for it but it was pretty much said that it was going to be an darker game than normal digimon games.
Game journalists literally crying and shaking trying not to mention Persona
Not a big fan of SRPGs, but if the story isthat good? Man I would love to watch the story in form of Anime
To add to this. I wish there was more cut scenes.
Thank you! 🙌🏼💯👏🏽👏🏽
This game is dark af and I love it. Kinda monotonous at times but I still love it.
"The Japanese voice acting isn't bad don't get me wrong" and this is what was meant to be said after. "but voice acting quality goes out the window entirely when it's in a language the consumer doesn't know. They might as well be playing on voice volume off entirely"
This is a reality.
Thank you so much! It is a very nice review! 👍
I couldn't finish this game, visual novels are not for me 😞
This game is good. Ngl. Whenever i have hard time to sleep, i open new game then couple minutes later i fell asleep. 👍 good for sleep disorder
I enjoyed this game way more than cyber sleuth the combat was the best in the series albeit a simple tactical game
Digimon World Monster die’s ok
Digimon Survive Human die Monster die holy shit…thats Dark.
I don't get it though cyber sleuth was so popular why not just release more that being said I'm enjoying my time in survive and I'm really loving the more mature story of this.
The next Digimon Game I'd like to see is an Action RPG where you can actually play as the Digimon freely in battle and it has great combat system.
God no. Already had that with Digimon World 4 and it was garbage.
@@jtyler9130 Not like that I was thinking more along the lines of say Dragon Ball Xenoverse or Dragon Ball Z Kakarot.
It’s 15 bucks but still not sure and I love digimon
The story is great, but conveying it as a visual novel killed it for me; it really kills the pacing for me. The story is too epic for a visual novel imo. I want full blown final fantasy level stuff, or even stuff like Persona 5 for showing the story. The gameplay is fine, but there's not enough of it. Also, yes, why isn't there an english dub?
A game that was delayed for 3 years... It's a bit disappointing, I don't mind the VN elements, but the slow pace is driving me nuts.
Was pretty bored with this title… up until *spoilers*
Ryo dies… and then things pick up and then Shuuji died(poor lopmon) and then it gets very interesting!
Thanks God there are only japanese voices instead of a cringey english dub.
English dub should be available as free DLC for people who like it, while japanese voices should be included by default in these kind of games, not the other way around.
Very good and onpoint review !
Love this game ngl
Everywhere I look, I see people attempting hate crimes against Digimon Survive.
Like Quistis said in that parody video, "It's not as good as FF6 or 7. Just roll with it, OK!".
Similar principle applies and y'all weeaboos know exactly what I mean.
Digimon should focus on cybersleuth not doing other things
Does this game gets harder? I'm playing on hard mode and it's piss easy. It's making me bored.
It could've gotten a 10 a little more push.
Yeah?
So $20 game… max, got it
I like this game cause the only other game I played was digimon rancher
Cyber sleuth and survive should never be mentioned in the same sentence. The former is an amazing digimon game and the later isn’t even a game. I hope this terrible release won’t keep us from future releases…
still not what most wanted...nothing will ever touch digimon world 3.....guess we gotta wait another 8 years and see what they give us
My only problem with this game is the battle graphic it just feels like a moble game to me. everything else is great, not including the price that's just gutsy with out the dubb opinion or other stander feature.
Your not the only one thought about the battle graphics is like a mobile game! Heck I even see digimon game on mobile that have better graphics!
It would've been better as a pure VN without the lackluster TRPG stuff shoehorned in.
With all due respect this is not a very balanced review
It sucks the tactics part was good the vn ruined it
Too much talking and not enough action. Survive is the only non open world game
Cant any studio make a digimon like they made in ps2?
Digimon world 1 would be nice. The art style is the best
what digimon world 4 or rumble 2 ?
Personally i think World 4 feel like a beta test game not a finish game.
I would love a new Rumble game, but i’m loving the last Digimon games (Cyber Sleuth, specially).
@@mrjonjohnny7919 digimon world 1 is the digits ages greatest gift to mankind
Ok top digimon games
1.Digimon adventure (2013)
2.Digimon world redigitized decoded
3.Digimon Survive
4.Digimon World
5.Digimon spirits 1&2.
Everything else is garbage. We were so desperate and loyal to digimon that we lied to ourselves about cyber sleuth and hackers.
You speak Nonsense my boy
Dawn and Dusk disagree with you
@@supahaze569 nah I'm just being too real. Bro have you played the games that I just listed. Digimon adventure 2013 was a fucking master piece. Redigitized wasn't perfect, but it was the closest we got to the digidestined experience. The story was amazing. Go watch these games on UA-cam. Go check out walkthrough or trailer. I'm on my 2nd play through of digimon survive. There's a lot of talking but it's the perfect digimon reboot. Hackers and cyber sleuth is garbage. Omfg I hate those games. And the lack of effort they put into it is amazing.
@@ryprims2189 garbage and garbage
Not interested in reading a book, I'd go watch an anime or TV show instead if i wanted to play a game that is like 80% visual novel.
Imagen paying 60$ to read
Bandaid and Nintendo are the worst how hard would it be to get the game dubbed in other languages you literally had years to get it done smfh
So a picture book. This visual novel "games" are boring
Eeewww...what is this game?? Why does anything have to become a visual novel? I just could not even finish this review..tje game just already felt soo boaring..well, i hope we will get a cyber sleuth 2
YOU DID GET A CYBERSLEUTH 2 its called Hackers Memory
Theres also Next Order if you care or did some research
played it and its barely a game in my opinion, its just a bad book with cliche anime in it
Looks boring as shit... and very low budget... its nothing like cyber sleuth
