Funny. I was poking at one of these in my local L&M and I basically had the same feeling as your video says.
Lots of variety, but it struggles to stand out.
Though I owned an SR300E at one point and felt the same way, which means it's a good comparison point.
    Great video, as always. :)

Got the 5 string version for a great deal. It's a fantastic instrument, but I agree with your assessment of the sound. I put Nordstrand Zen Blades and a Darkglass Tone Capsule in mine.

I got a red one of these for my graduation a few years ago and everything you said is true about this bass. The neck pickup has a massive advantage over the bridge and the single coil mode reduces the output by a long shot. Despite this, the active mode really helps you cut through the mix and bring a lot of boom. The neck is so smooth to play and having 24 frets is so much fun to play all kinds of licks. My only major gripe with the bridge is the intonation is not well made and you will likely strip the screws when you’re adjusting your height.

Hey, thanks for watching and commenting....yes, it is a LOT of fun to play! ( I made sure to say this in the video)....I don't think it sounds terrible either...its just not inspiring for me

I got both. A 2022 JS3 in metallic red and a 2016 SR300EB in metallic red as well as my newly acquired JS3V in walnut stain satin. Now i just have to have some songs to play with that B string as my four stringers are in drop D for the music I play

I’ve been using this bass wrong until seeing this video:
I never knew about the passive bypass, and I thought the switch was what switched pickups (curse you, guitar controls, for creating this bias in me)

I always try to be a "sound before looks" kind of person but wow that laurel board looks pale and I think it would benefit from a darker dye application. I like the shade of the blue on the body. Seems like a bass that will get you by on a budget due to the tonal options, but overall I think the Sire stuff is a touch nicer.

It looks like a mix of SR and RBX basses, but more awkward both in terms of looks and pickup placement. The bridge pick up is way too close to the bridge and the neck pickup is too close to the neck. Kinda the worst pickup config for me personally. I have no idea why it became such an "industrial standard". I wish more "modern" basses utilized stingray sweet spot or both pups closer tho the middle, like warwick doublebuck.

I agree that it does look like a mix between an Ibanez sr and a Yamaha rbx. I can easily see the resemblance in that. I’ve tried one out a few years ago. It’s not too bad. I personally like how it sounds in humbucker mode

I'm not sure if you are interested in modding the JS3, but if you are may I suggest looking into EMGs. EMG makes a pickup that is supposed to be like a P in a humbucker housing. It might be able to get you a better vintage tone. How does the neck on the JS3 compare to say an Ibanez or a Jazz bass?

As always, GREAT to hear from you...Thank you for the recommendation: Im not sure what I am going to do with this bass yet. Its not terrible - its just OK. My personal theory is that the Ibanez SoundGear was the inspiration behind the design of these. The neck is very much like an Ibanez SoundGear: small and fast.

    • @klaymeister

Emgs won't fit into this bass without routing unfortunately

Pretty cool review 😎🎸 I was interested in purchasing this bass at one point. Especially since I really do like that indigo blue finish. Plus I’ve tried one out a few years ago. And I thought it sounded great. A tad bright, but it sounds pretty cool. I was surprised to see that the split coil mode is very low output. Personally I like how it sounds in humbucker mode. Also lol on the 3 Michaels rating part.

I'm a single coil kinda guy but I thought single coil on this was so thin that was useless: humbucker mode does sound pretty good.....thank you for stopping by

@@Rib13Bass sure thing. I’m more of a humbucker kind of guy. I’ve always liked how thick and punchy they sound. And if I were to purchase a Jackson spectra bass, I would definitely leave on humbucker mode. With that being said, I’ve been thinking about purchasing a Jackson bass. Either the concert bass or the spectra bass. I would like to add something different to my arsenal

    • @LilYeshua

That's strange. My 2022 JS3's single coil setting is louder than in humbucker

@@LilYeshua really…I would expect that humbucker mode would be louder. But I guess it varies with some jackson spectra basses.

@@Rib13Bass update: I’ve recently purchased a Jackson concert bass in a blue burst finish and it is phenomenal. I really dig the radical design and the thick punchy tones it provides. I’m very pleased with my purchase.

In a guitarist with minimal bass experience and I bought this bass… I think I made the right decision. I got the 5 string just because I bought a 7 string guitar on the same day

Thanks for the review! How was the finish and fretboard? I got this bass a couple months ago and unfortunately the finish is spotty and and the fretboard has dents from when they fretted it.

    • @Rib13Bass
      @Rib13Bass  6 місяців тому

The finish seems ok but I found this bass at a pawn shop so I'm unsure of the history of its checks. The fretboard is ok and what I expect from an instrument in its pricerange.....I'm not stoked by this bass but, in fairness, it doesn't suck either....thanks for watching
