  • Watch this before taking your 4runner to the dealer and save yourself some money!
    A quick and simple video I shot while changing the spark plugs on my 2006 Toyota 4runner, Sport Edition, V6.
    This should apply to 2003-2009 4runners and most Tacoma trucks (same years, I think).
    Its pretty simple to do, with the right tools and an hour or two, you can save yourself some cash.
    Enjoy!

    I was quoted $200 to change 6 plugs while I was waiting for an oil change and tire rotation, i went to the parts counter bought 6 plugs and decided to check on you tube and your video was great. Less than 2 hours later I was done.

    Just replaced mine at 103k miles on my '07 4Runner , v6, rwd ,sport edition. The original iridium NGK plugs were rated to last 120k. I inspected the old plugs and they were only slightly blackened. I replaced them with the same NGK plugs. MAKE SURE YOU FIND OUT WHAT TYPE OF PLUGS YOU HAVE, YOU MAY NOT HAVE TO REPLACE THEM EVERY 30K MILES.

    Used this video as a guide to change my plugs 12/01/2014. I am slow....took one and a half hours. Great information, installed original specs plugs for $60 instead of paying $316 to Toyota service department. Video made job easy.

    Great video, thanks for taking the time to make and upload it. This saved me a trip to the shop and scored me some points with my wife. She has a 2004 4Runner and these instructions were spot on. Also, thanks for the tip on taping the socket to the extension though I used Gorilla tape instead of electrician's tape.

    A "MUST see" for anyone changing plugs for the first time on Toy 4 Runner. Important details that will prevent any breaking of plastic connections etc. Did not know about how deep the plugs were and good hint on taping sockets and extensions together.

    Great video.. FYI, its always a good idea to use compressed air to blow and dirt and debris off, beforehand so that nothing falls into the spark plug hole.you do NOT need a piece of plastic falling into your cylinders. Thank you..

    As I sit here at the dealership looking at my $154 estimate to do the job I figured there has to be a better way. Thanks for posting, gave me the info to do it myself!

    • @Gabez82
      @Gabez82 9 років тому +1

      Yes! You can do it! My estimate was 189.00$ at the Toyota dealership for my Truck, insane. Just use the tools he mentioned, Torque wrench and socket extensions, and a magnetic socket for the removal of spark plugs themselves. Follow his direction which are both detailed and easy and you'll get this job done. I followed it, although I did buy the spark plugs at the dealership, OEM is best. But about 1.5hrs later, new spark plugs in my Tacoma! Never have I replaced spark plugs in any vehicle. But I did it, made my week! Lol Don't be afraid to ask questions. People will reply. Have fun and good luck.

    You da man. Thanks for the post. I just changed my plugs on my 2005 Toyota Tacoma. Apparently the exact same set up as your ride. Everything went exactly as you showed. The only tough time I had was on the driver's side, forward plug: the electrical connector to the coil was hard to remove. However, with some wiggle, removed it and the ole girl is running great. Thanks again....

    Save yourself the time and $200 labor and change the spark plugs yourself. I watched your video twice and another video to cross reference the information, then watched yours one more time at the auto parts store, bought the necessary tools and 1 hour later all 6 of my ignition coils and spark plugs were changed. Buy yourself a magnet just in case the &*$%(*$ spark plug stays in the well.

    Just let you guys know you don't have to buy parts from the dealer . Toyota subcontract other brands like denso or Aisin the only difference is that they don't stamp Toyota logo. I work on my 2002 Tacoma and I get all my parts from Amazon way way cheaper OEM parts no Toyota logo. If your not sure go to rock auto website then use there part number I know it's wrong but I'll do what ever it takes to save my money.

    Great video. This is as easy as it looks. The trickiest part definitely is the rethreading of the plugs when you replace them. I highly recommend using an extension with the 5/8 spark plug socket permanently attached (I got one at an auto parts store). I don't think the electrical tape is a good idea. Also, you show the anti seize grease but he didn't use it? And why not just apply the diaelectric grease to the metal tip of the plug rather than up in the boot? I used genuine Toyota spark plugs and I'm fairly certain they come pregapped. Thanks again as this video is awesome.

    • @slewke
      @slewke 10 років тому +5

      dielectric grease is NOT a conductor. It goes on the boot up to the connector in a very thin layer. It acts as an insulator so the spark doesn't ground to the engine block. do not use a bunch and never on the metal to metal contacts.

  • @golharam
    @golharam 12 років тому

    Plugs should come pre-gapped. I don't think you need anti-seize. If you do, it will change the torque settings on the plugs.

      tigergreg8 yeah I decided to go with the Autolite Iridium XP. I was hesitant about it at first but they seem to be doing great and have a limited lifetime warranty. Were a couple bucks cheaper than the NGKs so I figured I'd try them out.
