Avoid Costly Engine Oil Leaks - Toyota Tacoma, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser - How To Replace PCV Valve
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 лис 2022
- Routine engine maintenance that's often overlooked on 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, and Tacoma. We show you how to remove and replace the PCV, or Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve. A clogged PCV valve can cause your engine to run sluggish, create damaging crankcase sludge, and allow internal pressure to cause major oil leaks.

Great video. Quick note on 10k oil changed interval with synthetic. Several reputable sources are strongly advising 5k oil changes even with synthetic, they speak of first hand experience with engine damage using the 10k interval after the 100k mark. "The car care nut" you tube channel has several videos about the "why", he is toyota master tech. Figured I'd mention this as you keep your vehicle long term. Love the vids!
Correct, 5k is best. Always cheaper to change your oil than rebuild/replace your engine.
1,000 is even better!
Change it every 5 miles! Save your engine now!
im at 200k with 10k intervals. No issues, no leaks.
@@WanderlostOverland 🤨
I’ll definitely be adding this to the list of maintenance on my rig.
Glad to see the FJ still getting a lot of love.
Thank you very much the quality of your content. Just changed the PCV valve on a 2013 fj cruiser and it made a huge difference. Than you again.
Glad to help!
Thanks for this video. It motivated me to install the PCV in my FJ, with 270K, I bought before the pandemic started. Not sure it's going to do anything to improve performance but why not give it a shot.
Thanks for the tip. I use to keep a spare oem one with all my cars. I will pick up one for my wife’s Camry. Hers def will need it.
Learned something from you guys as always, thank you!
Doing this soon! Just hit 60k
Oil changed, rear diff fluid changed, engine air filter changed. Will do front diff too and might as well do transfer case. Radiator drain and refill coming up too! Woo! Transmission drain and fill is the only one I find slightly intimidating.
Y'all are FREAKIN AWESOME! I've learned so much because of this channel. 🙏🤙😎 thank you for your videos!
Our pleasure!
Thank you for reminding the old Toyota technicians about this
Great info, as always from you guys, got to order one.
Yes, this was a good reminder for me to change the PCV on my 2015 4Runner (64 K miles). Thanks!😊
Glad it helped!
It did! I just replaced the original PCV valve on my 2015 4Runner Limited w/ 64,000 miles with an identical OEM valve from the dealership (part number: 12204-31110). I followed your procedure but added a couple of steps: 1) Sprayed the old PCV with Free All as it was hard to loosen, 2) Torqued the new one to 20 Ft-Lbs per my search of the internet. The old one sounded almost as “free” as the new one, but at only $7.27, I replaced it anyway. Thanks Wanderlost Overland! 🤓
within the past month i also changed the PCV hose on my gen1 taco after 27 years it was literally hard as a ROCK! OEM hose was about 12$ on the 31 off discount and formed to fit just proper as could be
Good advice our 2012 FJ has 66K time to order the part thanks
Torque 27nm. Thanks for video!
I love working on my 4runner and seeing different color mud from parts of the country sitting in spots the rain doesn't get to. I see red dust on your rig. Hello from Route 53 and North av area👍
We do a underneath cleaning every fall. It's like an archeology dig, pealing back all the layers from across the country. LOL
Don't it's ever been done on my 2015 I purchased in 2020. Watched the vid, bought the part, easy peasy. Thanks for the tutorial.
You're welcome!
Thank you so much guys! The big stuff is fun, but the little things are worthwhile to spray with the parts cannon once in a while. Any chance this could reduce power at higher speeds while towing?
Great channel for any 4 runner owner 👍🏾💯
Glad you think so!
Can you do a video on a oil change? Also, is there something you are supposed to replace for the oil filter early on to keep something else from breaking?
FYI guys.....install requires Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1324 and a torqued to 20 ft/lbs. Also, $4.45 from the dealership. 🤷🏿
One of the most overlooked parts but so important. Ours is in a horrible location 2018 RAV4 with the 2.5L, it took me over an hour to complete. It's like a 2.5 hour dealer labor charge + the part but YT'er the-car-care-nut showed a way it can be done but not for anyone inexperienced working on cars.
Same location on my Highlander. I was concerned that doing it by feel like TCCNs example would take me forever. Thankfully it took about 30 minutes. The OEM part was $16 from my local dealer. The new PCV was a game changer for our Highlander w/225K miles.
Thank you for letting me know about this i have no clue i need to replace this on my 4 runner. As always you two are the best at explaining and showing.
Thank you!
Thanks, never changed mine-176,000-but I will now! Thank You
I bought a 2005 4Runner a year ago. It has almost 175,000 miles and it's probably still using the original PCV valve. I just ordered a Toyota replacement (12204-31030) on Amazon for $11.95.
That's probably why I've got so much exhaust soot on the body around the tailpipe.
FYI guys, those used PCV valves were still functioning. Back in the day the 'test' was to make sure they still rattle. Many times a soaking with some carb cleaner will bring them back to life. Nowadays, most just replace it because they are a simple $20 part.
Still functioning....yes, but not to their full potential. Best to replace, or clean, them before they don't function and cause damage.
@@WanderlostOverland hahah yeah, "Functioning" is not what maintenance is about. If its no longer functioning, that is a Repair :P
I was a Toyota tech back in the day and when we used to do major maintenance the parts department always included a pcv valve - how times change
Thank you for this! Can you provide the Toyota OEM parts number for the PCV valve?
Thanks for the info i am ordering a new one right now
No problem 👍
This was a great video, thankyou
Glad it was helpful!
Muchas gracias por el dato, no tenia idea que esa valvula se cambiaba.
Gracias por ver!
* por favor not vor
Ugh... 113k on my 2015 Tacoma... now I have to check Rockauto and Autozone... thanks for the tip... never knew this was a thing... somehow. Yay for more maintenance... so long as it extends the life of the truck.
I just ordered a Toyota replacement (12204-31030) on Amazon for $11.95. That's the part for the 4.0 liter V6.
You bet!
@@WanderlostOverland Changed it yesterday... yeah, it was gross and barely moved. Good tip, Mark... as usual.
Hi there! ... i am just curious if you have changed/cleaned the VVTi Oil Control Valve OCV filter on your rigs that have them? ... i only recently discovered this filter on the Gen2 Tacoma
Excellent! Thanks WO!!!
Glad you liked it!
Thanks just bought one for my 13 4runner it’s so cheap on dealer website 6$ i have ordered two i will keep one spare
Nice 👍
My 2013 is 11 years old with 60k miles. I could not manually remove it. I had to use an impact wrench to remove it. Putting new one was also a pain. Manually went as far as I could go but still seeing a small thread. I just left it like that.
I put a JLT oil separator on my 2020 Runner right after I bought in new in 2020. It catches all the oil and fuel blow by that comes out of the PVC system before it gets routed back into the intake for engine to burn. I don't believe you should force your engine to eat what it pukes out the PCV system. I empty the catch can about every 3k miles. Makes for a cleaner engine IMO.
Wow just subscribed load of info thanks👍
Welcome aboard!
are these able to be soaked in solvent, cleaned and reused or are they never as good as new again?
Damn I have 67k 07 FJ from japan. Seeing the state of the airfilter this otherwhise excellent condition car had and the throttlebody (I had to clean) I guess this lil valve was never changed. - recently It developed what seems like clear oil leak - still didnt wind where from exactly. Changing that valve is good idea in any case.
How often do you recommend changing the spark plugs on a 2015 Tacoma 4.0
So this PVC valve if dirty or bad could lead to a few seconds of pretty fluffy bluish white smoke on startup only..my '18 Tacoma 3.5 never smokes any other time. Sometimes smokes after sitting 30 minutes..sometimes not..
My wife’s Lexus came with “free” oil changes every 10,000 miles the first year. I took over the maintenance after that. After seeing how filthy the oil got after 10,000 miles, I reduced the frequency to about 7000 miles. By then it’s getting plenty dirty but nowhere near as bad as the 10,000 miles. I service the transmission and other items as well. The Lexus is a Toyota w more options. Great reliable vehicles, but I would never recommend waiting 10k to change oil!
Thanks for sharing, Mark and Merri! Wow, you guys piled up some miles on your 4Runner in no time! How many miles on the FJ?
250,000 on the FJ. We get around.
Is there more than 1 PCV valve? The ones I’m finding do not appear to be threaded.
My 2.7 4cyl. Valve gasket broke. Is this was the issue?
Wow I’m gonna replace mine now! Thanks for sharing
No problem 👍
2:05 “It shouldn’t be in there very tight….holy sh** it’s in there really tight.” Haha great video. 😅
Toyota puts their thread locker on it and suggests when replacing also, or Loctite 271. I believe someone on 4R forum found the torque spec also 20ft lbs.
👍more Toyota content...
More to come!
Great Videos! Have you had to replace the fuel pump yet in your FJ?
Not yet!
My 2011 Tacoma 2.7 liter is losing oil really fast. No visible leaks are smoke. I have no idea what is happening. But just me burning it constantly a little at a time I am thinking.
Can’t you blow in a pcv valve and see if air comes out the other end?
Great video thank you for sharing!!
20 ft pds for the Pcv valve
I have done 10k synthetic oil changes for decades and no issues at all.
Interesting I guess I should cha nge the pcv valve on my 2017 tundra it has a 168,000 miles on it. Curious question I think you said you changed the oil every 10,000 on the 4runner and the Fj every 5,000 and the valve wasn't as dirty as the 4runner. I get conflicting advice some say you should change your oil every 5,000 10,000 on synthetic oil like my 2017 tundra but I started changing it every 5,000 the last couple of years what's your opinion. Thanks
The other way around; the valve from the FJ was much dirtier. Toyota says to change the synthetic every 10,000 so that's what we do.
I have a 2010 4runner . Was told that i need to repair the timing cover fixed . I chang oil every 3000 miles . But they want to charge 3100 + dollars . Is that the same repair you are doing in this video . Please help don't have that kind of money .
What's the part number for pcv valve for 2022 4runner? Do you use original or after market?
We use aftermarket.
What do think about oil catch can / oil separator
Never installed or used one. Worth looking into though.
if the PCV gets plugged, the passenger (right) side valve cover has a crankcase air inlet connected to the engine air inlet. Plugged PCV oil vapors will begin pushing into the throtle body contaminating your intake
Could that issue cause a plume of bluish gray smoke from exhaust on startup for less than 30 seconds..the '18 Tacoma TRD pro with the 3.5 L? It never smokes any other time..and I always maintain the synthetic oil..currently 165k
@@jefflancaster6587 in the past I've discovered that to be valve stem seals.
Do you have the part number?
I second this. Came to ask for the part # also.
I just ordered a Toyota replacement (12204-31030) on Amazon for $11.95. That's the part for the 4.0 liter V6. Amazon makes it fairly easy to enter your vehicle in your Amazon Garage and when you search for PCV valve, it'll recommend parts that fit.
It's best to look it up for your particular year. Our '17 4R and '07 FJ take different part numbers.
@@WanderlostOverland ohh okay gotcha thank you 🙏
The crude, is carbon deposits, carbon deposits accumulate from using conventional oil and not changing it over 3K mils
Always Always use synthetic oil, it's cheap and readily available.
How often we should change the PCV Valve?
in the early 1990s it was once a year or 15k miles... it was probably overKill but Who Knows!?
My high school buddies and I used to call unknown torque specs, “German specs”, goot-n-tight.
3.4 PCV valve is same as 4.0
I went 1/2 drive easy enough
So are there two valves or just one?
Just one.
Comment might be a year later. Yes mines due on my fj. 🇦🇺
Great video! Any chance you can share part numbers for us lazy folk?
12204-31030 is the Toyota part number for the PCV valve on the 1GR-FE 4.0 liter V6 engine. $11.95 on Amazon. I just ordered one.
There's a $7.56 after market part but I splurged on the genuine Toyota part. :-)
It's best to look it up for your particular year. Our '17 4R and '07 FJ take different part numbers.
How many miles on that pcv?
Just heard the mileage. You guys are great.
What's the part number for this?
It's best to look it up for your particular year. Our '17 4R and '07 FJ take different part numbers.
I have a '17 4Runner tho! lol
2:03 😂
Oh wow, 80k yeah probably time!
Do oil change at every 5k.
did the old taco yesterday at 5300 miles since last OCI, will any harm done, what you think?
I DO NOT recommend oil changes regardless of the oil used that go beyond 5,000 miles or six months.
Yes, Toyota and other manufacturers say 10,000, DON'T DO IT!!!
good info but you ain’t fooling anyone at 3:49 😂
Thank you for everythings..Thank you for interesting video
Our pleasure!
"It shouldn't be in there very tight." Famous last words lol
🤣
Oil change every 5000… that’s what I do
Oil change every 10k miles 😮 I do mine every 5k miles
Good to know!
I paid $28 from Auto Zone
Every 10K miles oil change? Well. Throw away the car.
I went 10k miles on my oil once. When I changed it, it was really black. After that, I went back to every 5k miles.
