As a complete noob to WA this helped so much while not being an information overload. I hope you make more of these delving deeper and sharing more of your knowledge in this great format.
Bro I was genuinely afraid of using Weakauras because it seemed to complicated but now that I've seen your video it actually feels like something I could spend time on so I don't have to use other add-ons. Nice guide you got here, very easy to comprehend😊
this is probably the best guide to get started with WAs. I want to have seen this about 5 years ago. By now I'm pretty firm in building/changing WAs but when I started this would have been insanely good and probably have saved me some hours! Still using some premade ones as it is much faster changing them to my needs but it helps if you are missing some or if they are just too big.
BRAVO!!!! You remind me of one professor I had in CompSci. Well mapped teachings and breaking them down to understandable, concise, succint and precise tutorials. I can now effectively use WA. Thank you!
I really like the way you started from nothing and went through all the steps to build a working setup. I am using your ideas to set up my toon the way I want to play. It was great to have explanations for why you do something, not just the "click this button". I have also gotten very mad when the presenter fumbles and appears not to know what he is presenting.
Okay here’s what I’ll do, I’ll master the skill points of my prot pal first, get used to the spells and how they work together, and then I go back to this video. I’m a new player and on my first time tanking someone said I had no idea what tanking is and got kicked off. Anyway, thank you so much! Great video it was easy enough to understand the logic of how this add-on works! ❤
This was amazingly helpful, very, VERY beginner-friendly and at the same time not boring/annoying if you have a general idea of how WA could/would work, but never actually looked at creating your own. Thank you!
Please more 🙏 first time viewer. Been having some minor issues with other people's class aura packs and with this alone I'm much more confident making one for myself.
This helped so much! I've benn wanting and struggled for years to make my own WA! This broke it down to a point where it's digestible and now easy to understand, thanks
Really powerful video. I dont intend on making my own from scratch as I just started playing the game, but I do enjoy the fact that now I can understand and modify presets that I may want to use to tailor them to my liking. Much appreciated
This is exactly what I came looking for. Simple explanation with a really good information. Suddenly I feel like my UI is going to be littered with WA's :) Have my sub as a thank-you.
This video is amazing! I personally like to make my own WA and set them up to fit my playstyle. Personally I already learned all this the hard way back when Shadowlands came out, but I sure wish this video was available back then. Keep up the good work :D
This video is super helpful. I've made some auras by myself but they were super rudimentary and chaotic. This will help me make them more functional, and I'll share it with my friends so they can learn how to use WA better too. By the way, great content, perfectly explained and with a really hooking cadence and rhythm. Hope more people finds out your channel :)
Another case of UA-cam reading my mind and popping a video into my feed before I could even search for it. Good work and I hope to see more of these in the future.
Great tutorial. The quality of your audio, speech, pronunciations, instruction and attention to detail is very impressive. I especially like when you point and explain specific elements in the WeakAuras interface. I now don't feel so overwhelmed about WA! You have my like and subscribe and I look forward to checking out your other videos!
Even after a few months this is such a resourceful guide, all the WA for my class are outdated and when I have some time on the weekend will experiment with making my own, subbed!
awesome video.... Easy to listen to, watch and follow. Well done mate !! I thought the addon was too confusing for years... but you explained everything step by step
Very high quality tutorial. Great pacing! I see you haven't made videos here in a while. I hope you're out there making educational content for something else because you're very good at it! If you come back and make more WoW content, I would like to see a workflow for making raid or m+ mechanic weakauras. Basically how to become the sort of person who can go from "i wish i had a weakaura to track that" to actually making one
Thank you. You don’t know how much you just helped me out. This is an amazing into to WA and and a lot better than the typical “yea just upload this text” type of approach I’m used to seeing. I’m definitely going to pass it onto my friends.
A great video on Weak Auras. I have watched other videos and been lost in the first 5 minutes. You really broke it down into understandable sections. You picked up a new subscriber today. Please keep up the series.
This video needs more views, more likes, and more comments. I know WA can be very intimidating upon first use. However, this video very easily gives some very important and helpful information, simplifying the task!
There are no wrong answers! From premade is honestly a better starting point, but for the sake of covering more information in one sitting the Icon seemed like a better use for educational purposes since you really gotta configure all of it (once, then copy)
Hey friend! happy to help here, I can answer both of them. To show the GCD, you'll want to go into your Trigger for the spell you're tracking with the "Cooldown/Charges/Count" method. Below the "spell" name field is a cog that says "Extra Options: None". Click on this cog and you'll get a hidden dropdown with the ability to toggle the "Show Global Cooldown" button to on, which will allow you to track the GCD. This will not do anything at first, since you will need to make one additional setting to show the GCD on the icon. Head back to the "Display" tab for the aura, and within the "Icon Settings" section you'll see a divider labeled "Swipe Overlay Settings" with an option to "enable swipe" beneath it. Enable the swipe. I highly recommend checking the box for "Hide Timer Text" which appears after you enable swipe, but now whenever you cast a spell the GCD will show on your spell icon just like it does on your action bars (woo hoo!) For detecting range, this is much easier and all we need to do is add a Condition. Head to the Conditions tab and add a new condition to look for the Charge/Cooldown/Count trigger (likely Trigger 1), and set the option in the "If" section to "Spell In Range" with a value of "False". Following this, set the "Then" section to whatever you would like. The way I see this commonly handled is akin to the Blizzard UI, so you can set the "Then" to "color" and change the color field which appears to be a darkish red. So all together it reads "If the spell is in range (false), change the icon color to be red-ish". Hope this helps! Let me know if you run into any hiccups
I am a player somewhere between beginner and advanced when it comes to Weakaura. Therefore I would be very interested in an Advanced Guide from you - I did like your way of explaining this beginner Guide very much and hope for more videos in this direction! Thank you :)
Thanks friend! I’m compiling a list of things for a more “advanced” guide on weakauras (without getting into custom LUA function stuff), and hoping to work on that sometime next month after DF launch settles down a bit and I can work on vids again more directly! 🎉
Thank you for not speaking at a pace that leaves a viewer wondering if you'd rather be doing something else. So many of these "how to set up" videos the creator is talking so rapidly you have to wonder if they're expecting a pizza at any moment. Learned quite a bit, thank you.
Great video weak auras is very interesting to me and i want to become proficient at. thank you very much any tutorials you make on weak auras i will watch
Great video and much appreciated. Really, a very accessible intro to weakauras. I am trying to make a weakaura to track flameshock on my target. Any tips? A second video could be on buffs and debuffs. Thanks again.
I just finished a script for a buff tracking video! I need to record it this weekend but it should be the next proper guide I release within the next week or so. In the meantime, you can get started by doing the following if you want a baseline to mess with: - Make and Icon/ProgressBar aura - Set trigger to watch for Aura -> Target -> Debuff -> Flame Shock -> Own Only -> Show: Always You can then set up some display text for what you want to know (%p is the duration of the debuff remaining) Conditions can be good to watch for things like Aura Found (Missing) or Duration Remaining >/
wow this was exactly what I was looking for for days... the only thing I really would like to know is, how to make the icon grey, if I dont have enough rage.. but maybe I will find this in your other videos? anyways, big thanks for the guide!
Hey friend! Happy to help here. If you're using the "Charges/Cooldown/Count" Trigger for a spell (shown in the video) then luckily you're only one step away from tracking this. To adjust for rage, you'll add a new Condition with the following settings: IF: Trigger 1 -> "Insufficient Resources" --> True THEN: Desaturate --> Checked Alternatively, you can also set the THEN to be "Color" and use the box which appears to the right to be a color such as Blue (which is what the default UI uses to indicate low resources). Personally, I add a new Text on the element under Display, then set its display text to read "rage" and show that text conditionally if the "insufficient resources" trigger is true, but this part is entirely up to how you want the WeakAura to work for your brain! Good luck out there!
@@hrothmar oh wow thanks!! build a complete weak aura set for my monk with this guide and I am super happy how it turned out, thats the last thing that was missing
sry but may I ask you one more question? maybe it is too complicated to answer here, but I will try to explain, I wanna do an animated texture that starts after I used a spell. I get a buff every 10 secs, that one of my spells will be instant cast, so I want to start the animation after I used the spell/buff on me disapeared and lasts 10 secs, but it is a talent, so no cooldown on a spell or something like that, wanna do it with a square that fills clockwise and lasts 10 secs until it is full again ;) I know how to set up the texture etc, just cant figure out the trigger or condition that says "after buff xy disapeared start animated texture that lasts 10secs" xD if it is too complicated, thats fine too, just wanted to ask, because I cant find anything like that at the internet -.-
@@Nana-hh6qh under Triggers there should be an option to set a “hide” value to “timed” and then you enter the duration to 10 (default measures in seconds). It’s been a while since I’ve used it and I can’t find its exact location, but I know there’s an option to set hard seconds count timers. That said, if it’s ever effected by haste and/or blizz timers it can throw it off a little bit (such as the Soaks affix in fated raids for 10.0)
Really great tutorial. I'm a programmer and I've always been scared of weak auras because it just looks like I have to learn to code to play wow. LOL. Also the way you presented the tutorial. I keep thinking are you always this calm in life? Like just take everything you do this slow and calm? I'm always like go go go, so it was nice to slow down but also kind of bothered me in some ways. Good tutorial.
Howdy! Thanks for the kind words 💙 I’m very go-go-go IRL as well (also someone who works in code). It takes a lot of effort to actively lower the barrier-to-entry and ensure I don’t make assumptions when it comes to who might be watching the videos, so I take things slowly and methodically :D
Ngl very nice explanation even for such a noob like me but i decided not to use it bcs i was watching and trying to do it on my acc for like nearly 2 hours instead of playing so ill leave it for now. Thanks tho i will use it in future for sure :)
Then comes the fun part of getting conditions for like " if(Mortal Strike CD + Rage > 60) Priority #1 Slam Unless Target Debuff (Rend) is < 4 seconds, then Priority # 1 Rend"
Hey, thank you for this detailed video! What do you think, is it possible to make a WA for molten boulder at ruby? I would like to know it befor its happen. Similar to a public Wise Mari - Corrupted Geyser WA. Or is this „impossible/much complicater“ because of something I don‘t know? ✌🏻
You can absolutely do this! Site like `wago.io` can be used to search for the boss's spell you want to see and there are a lot of one-off trackers if you need them. For example, here is one I created for the "Static Cling" cast for the final boss of Vortex Pinnacle (dragonflight season 2) wago.io/-X1GFF3R4/1
Condition 2 is configured to watch Spell Activation Glow for the spell, so basically any time the spell would glow on your bars (ie: if a buff is affecting it), then Blizz glows the spell. This mirrors the glow and will also glow the aura. I have a more in-depth video on buff tracking and glows coming in the next appx. 1-2 weeks ✌️
I have another video on buff tracking here: ua-cam.com/video/1F7KMl9ToCo/v-deo.html The difference would be how you set up the Triggers. In the video, I make an Ashen Catalyst self-buff tracker. You’ll want to change it: FROM: “Aura->Player->Buff” TO: “Aura->Target->Debuff” Should do exactly what you want 👌
You'll want to find the WeakAura in the left-hand side of the `/wa` area, then either Delete the WeakAura, or you can go to the "Load" tab within the aura and check the box for "Never" which will cause it to "never load".
I haven’t written any myself, since it is usually written in LUA, a language that I’m not familiar with. That said, I have edited existing ones to repurpose them for things I need! It’s fun, but a little daunting simultaneously.
I don’t currently, but I can get my current one uploaded to Wago if you’d like. The one I actually use is a bit different than the one shown (I operate with my group located off to the right of my character instead of below, due to my vertical peripheral vision not being very good). That said, I can definitely make a centered version of it, or upload my offcenter one as well, later tonight and share it
Hey again! Here's what I've been using on the Dragonflight Beta + Shadowlands Season 4 content (raid/dungeons/etc): wago.io/q5h-bHdcn. I hope it helps!
As a heads up, there was a recent change to Arms which changed some of our priority (namely Fervor of Battle killed whirlwind usage in single target), so I’ll need to sit down and update the package to reflect that change soon.
14:50 I do not see this spell activation overlay glow option being available to me. Is this due to some difference in how wa work in retail and classic?
Do you ever record yourself reading a book out loud? Your voice is relaxing as heck lmao. And yes I appreciate the WA info. I managed to get 2k io without macro or WA but I feel like I need it to get farther
It would be great if you could do a tutorial on GnomeSequencer-Enhanced (Advanced Macro Compiler) as there are non that are as clearly laid out as your weak auras are and I belive you will be a superstar :) no please have a go at it GSE
Can we make it invisible than making decolor or gray...the spell which is inactive got sufficient rage and cd but inactive want to make it invisible...only visible when we can use it
Sure can! Just change it from Desaturate to be “Alpha” as the property being changed and set the value to 0. Alpha is the “transparency” setting you’re looking for :)
They're tracked as two different values. The cooldown (or "progress", which is %p) will begin counting the moment any charges begin their cooldown, while the charges will be a separate value stored as a number. To track charges, you'll use the Trigger # that you're using in the trigger tab. If you're tracking the charges in Trigger 2, then you'd use "%2.charges", for example. To track cooldown, you'd use the same method, reaching for "%2.p" if it's on Trigger 2, or just "%p" if it's on Trigger 1. You'd configure two different Text elements for each value, then set Conditions for when to show each.
Awesome guide to weak auras, I was hoping to find a way to move the icons from right to center as the cooldown comes to 0, do you have more WA videos where I can find that out?
Hey friend! I know people accomplish this with boss abilities (ie: repalcements for BigWigs/DBM), but I dont have direct experience with it. My best advice would be to download a Boss Ability Tracker and see if there's any sort of backwards-engineering to be done to swap it to watching your own spells instead, possssibly.
@@hrothmar Just found a way through settings in dinamic group, this helps a lot with priority rotations, let me know if you or anyone need the string for a retribution rotation
It looks like the recent UI change may have altered this. Make the `Type` under Trigger 2 set to "Spell" and the subcategory "Spell Activation Overlay Glow".
I followed your steps on the glow portion, and it works while WA is active. But when I exit, the glow doesn’t act as it should, nor does it glow at all. What have I done wrong or what should I look into to correct it?
So while the /WA window is shown it will usually show the glow (this is not indicative of how it will perform in the real world, it's just illustrating that it has been added). If the glow is not working on the aura during actual combat, you'll want to ensure that the "Conditions" are correct in order to show it, as well as the action within that condition are set to display the glow. If the default state is to now show the glow (Display tab -> Glow 1 -> Show Glow (unchecked)), then the issue will be in the Condition tab's logic. Double check what triggers it is looking for, as well as any conditional logic within the trigger which may impact it.
@@hrothmar found the fix! So from your presentation, only thing I changed was in Trigger 2. Instead of action overlay glow, I chose, action usable. Conditions for trigger 2 are still as you demonstrated. Was so excited to see it work. Still wouldn’t have gotten started without ur video. Thank you

Nice video. I wish you would have shown how to make weakauras reflect global cooldown though, and show when something is out of range.
Hey friend! happy to help here, I can answer both of them.
To show the GCD, you'll want to go into your Trigger for the spell you're tracking with the "Cooldown/Charges/Count" method. Below the "spell" name field is a cog that says "Extra Options: None". Enable the swipe. For detecting range, this is much easier and all we need to do is add a Condition. Happy to help here. If you're using the "Charges/Cooldown/Count" Trigger for a spell (shown in the video) then luckily you're only one step away from tracking this.
To adjust for rage, you'll add a new Condition with the following settings:
IF: Trigger 1 -> "Insufficient Resources" --> True
THEN: Desaturate --> Checked
Alternatively, you can also set the THEN to be "Color" and use the box which appears to the right to be a color such as Blue (which is what the default UI uses to indicate low resources).
That said, if it’s ever effected by haste and/or blizz timers it can throw it off a little bit (such as the Soaks affix in fated raids for 10.0)
Thank you!
Very helpful. Liked and subbed. Thanks.
Thank you so much! I hope the new expansion treats you well
good job ! Thank you.
It takes a lot of effort to actively lower the barrier-to-entry and ensure I don’t make assumptions when it comes to who might be watching the videos, so I take things slowly and methodically :D
very good !!!! thanks a lot
Ngl very nice explanation even for such a noob like me but i decided not to use it bcs i was watching and trying to do it on my acc for like nearly 2 hours instead of playing so ill leave it for now. Thanks tho i will use it in future for sure :)
this gave me a solid chuckle, thank you for the kind words and I hope that your playing goes well!
Great vid, thanks :)
Thank you
Nice job!! I learn a lot with your video
It brings me so much joy to hear this helped you :D
Then comes the fun part of getting conditions for like " if(Mortal Strike CD + Rage > 60) Priority #1 Slam Unless Target Debuff (Rend) is < 4 seconds, then Priority # 1 Rend"
Haha exactly, when the conditions start to get long there’s always unexpected hiccups as well
Hey, thank you for this detailed video!
What was the point of adding the glow? Are we supposed to condition it to something like a buff?
Condition 2 is configured to watch Spell Activation Glow for the spell, so basically any time the spell would glow on your bars (ie: if a buff is affecting it), then Blizz glows the spell. This mirrors the glow and will also glow the aura.
I have a more in-depth video on buff tracking and glows coming in the next appx. 1-2 weeks ✌️
As a hunter, I would love to see barb shot is on the target and how many stacks.
I have another video on buff tracking here:
ua-cam.com/video/1F7KMl9ToCo/v-deo.html
The difference would be how you set up the Triggers. In the video, I make an Ashen Catalyst self-buff tracker. You’ll want to change it:
FROM: “Aura->Player->Buff”
TO: “Aura->Target->Debuff”
Should do exactly what you want 👌
How to disable the interrupts box and my party member's spell cooldowns when in a party? Please answer someone
You'll want to find the WeakAura in the left-hand side of the `/wa` area, then either Delete the WeakAura, or you can go to the "Load" tab within the aura and check the box for "Never" which will cause it to "never load".
Solid video. Do you do much with writing your own functions?
I haven’t written any myself, since it is usually written in LUA, a language that I’m not familiar with. That said, I have edited existing ones to repurpose them for things I need! It’s fun, but a little daunting simultaneously.
do you have these uploaded anywhere like wago etc? would love to download your warrior pack
I don’t currently, but I can get my current one uploaded to Wago if you’d like. The one I actually use is a bit different than the one shown (I operate with my group located off to the right of my character instead of below, due to my vertical peripheral vision not being very good). That said, I can definitely make a centered version of it, or upload my offcenter one as well, later tonight and share it
Hey again! Here's what I've been using on the Dragonflight Beta + Shadowlands Season 4 content (raid/dungeons/etc):
wago.io/q5h-bHdcn.
I hope it helps!
@@hrothmar thanks!
Potentially, this guide is solely for Retail and I cannot promise any information here is fully translatable for the Classic version.
Do you ever record yourself reading a book out loud? Your voice is relaxing as heck lmao. And yes I appreciate the WA info. I managed to get 2k io without macro or WA but I feel like I need it to get farther
Thanks for the kind words! i've done book readings before as community events in the past, it was a fun time!
Great Help. Thank you. How do I get the cooldowns to play a sound when the cooldown is over?
That would be under the Conditions tab. You can set something up so that “If Cooldown False, Play Sound”
It would be great if you could do a tutorial on GnomeSequencer-Enhanced (Advanced Macro Compiler) as there are non that are as clearly laid out as your weak auras are and I belive you will be a superstar :) no please have a go at it GSE
I do not have much experience with this personally, but I hope you're able to find resources that support you for it!
Just curious how to add cool down numbers when a spell has multiple charges
@@hrothmar thanks for replying to my question- your video was great Ty!
@@Licensed1 of course! More than happy to help, good luck out there!
Spell Activation overlay glow is not in my dropdown menu. in trigger 2
It looks like the recent UI change may have altered this. Make the `Type` under Trigger 2 set to "Spell" and the subcategory "Spell Activation Overlay Glow".
Bob ross of wow! 🎉
Great vid, you get a sub :)
Double check what triggers it is looking for, as well as any conditional logic within the trigger which may impact it.
worse case, you can always upload your aura to `wago.io` and I can take a look for you and link a fixed one back, just lmk!
@@hrothmar ok. I appreciate the feedback I will look into it when I have time. Thank you
@@hrothmar found the fix!
So from your presentation, only thing I changed was in Trigger 2.
Instead of action overlay glow, I chose, action usable.
Conditions for trigger 2 are still as you demonstrated. Was so excited to see it work. Still wouldn’t have gotten started without ur video. Thank you
