    I have a DT 466 and it won't start in warm weather but starts fine in cold weather. It is lazy on a hard pull until you keep it wound up for a few miles. Replaced inj and orings, HPOP, regulator and sensor. I will check my shims. Thank you Rod Shelley

    I don't have stock injectors. I'm assuming that it's the same for the injectors that I have. I've been putting this off for two Winters now. The shim kit's been sitting in the top of my toolbox I definitely ain't going through another winter without doing this. I've been plugging it in in the Sub-Zero winter up here in Buffalo New York. It won't even start with 1540 I've got to put full synthetic T6 10w30. You definitely covered the confusing part for me with the difference in shim sizes between Armature Sims and magnet shims. I used to live down in Charlotte I sure do miss the South man. never really had this problem down there. thanks for the vid.very helpful

      Hey bud. Thanks for the comments and for giving my channel some of your time. I have done this to a few 7.3’s now and have been very pleased with the results. Some of these trucks were having trouble 65 degree weather and had to be plugged. My assumption is that when ever plugging the Block heater in helps then it’s an oil problem. Shimming deals with wear in the injector travel and drilling the drain in the spacer plate helps evacuate oil so it doesn’t stay under the armature plate. That thick oil when cold limits travel also.

    Thanks for this video. I've been kicking around the idea of doing this to my hard starting Louisiana truck. First I've heard of drilling those holes. Seems to be a no Brainer though after watching this.
    Again, thanks for the video.

      Glad I could help. I’ve had some that were moody to start even in 60 degree temps. This really helps if u need to shim and when I have injectors out I’ll drill even tho they don’t need shims. Really helped a few of mine out. Let me know if I can help and good luck.

      Glad you got something out of it. And hope it helps. I’ve had good luck with these shim kits on several trucks. No replacement for new injectors but when ya don’t have $2500 to spend it will get ya down the road till ya do.
      Tip. Make sure you are squarely on the head of the armature bolt and keep a good bit of down pressure till she breaks loose there ain’t a lot to get the socket on with those. That why I like how the shim kits send torques to replace them with. And drilling the larger drain holes in the spacers is key as well.
      Feel free to hit me back if ya have any questions. Even before ya start if needed.

      Shimming has helped when they give cold start issues in warm weather. Buys ya some time before you have to buy injectors.

  • @adamwright5235
    @adamwright5235 2 роки тому +3

    I did this to my truck 6 years ago. It wouldn't start in 50 degrees or cooler weather. After the shims, I started it in -13 degree weather. Too bad the damage was already done from ether starting it for 3 years. I am in the process of replacing the pistons now because cylinder #1 piston cracked last winter.

    • @bayoudiesel
      @bayoudiesel  2 роки тому +3

      I have shimmed a few of mine and have been impressed. The combination of shims and drilling out the drain hole seems to really help the moody starts.

  • @StevenCollects
    @StevenCollects Рік тому +3

    I've been having cold start issues on my 2001. I assumed it was a glow plug issue. It will not start in cold weather unless plugged in. I do have good oil pressure and when the temps are above 70 degrees it will start up just fine.

    • @bayoudiesel
      @bayoudiesel  Рік тому +4

      I have had the same issues with a few 7.3’s. If the injectors have some miles on them I will usually shim them. As you can see in the video part of the shimming process is drilling out larger drain ports in the spacer. My thought process is if it’s hard to start in 60 degrees and plugging it in for an hour makes it start then it on the oil side sense that is the primary thing effected by temp. I’ve had good results on everyone I have done. Feel free to hit me back if ya have any questions and thanks for watchin.

      Had to go out to the shop for something and looked at my inverted torques socket set. The socket for the armature plate bolt is an E-5. The shim sets I get on Amazon come with all the tools u need. They are really finicky so u have to be dead straight on them and be pushing down to break them. Hope that’s the info u wanted.
