    That's good advice. There are three situations. The first, as described here, is where a hybrid is boosting an older conventional vehicle. The second is where a conventional vehicle is boosting the accessory battery of the hybrid, and the third is where two hybrids boost each other. The hybrid battery is typically underpowered, and it strangely is not assigned to run the starter motor. It does run the safety relays, which is why you get locked out even though the main battery is fine. If the hybrid accessory battery needs a boost, manufacturers tell you that they don't want the donor vehicle to be running, since the relays are looking for 12V, not 14.5, and they don't require a whole lot of current. So, when boosting a disabled hybrid, I boost with engine off. On the other hand, if you need to boost an older conventional vehicle I'd do as you did and have engine on so the starter motor in the disabled vehicle gets enough juice (and you don't deplete your own battery).
