Then she became the queen grandmother (i believe that was the only point in history that the United Kingdom had three queens alive). Charles had two great grandmothers at his Christening. The first was Queen Mary. The second, The "Dowager Marchioness of Milford Haven", Prince Philip's grandmother, was actually born Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine, daughter of Princess Alice, Queen Victoria's second daughter. She was a remarkable individual, and a senior member of The Royal Family in her own right. Her mother died at a relatively young age taking care of her ill children in Hesse, Germany. One of her sisters was Tsarina Alexandra, who would be killed by the Bolsheviks along with her husband, Tsar Nicholas in 1918. Princess Victoria was married to Prince Louis of Battenberg Former First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff of the United Kingdom- one of the architects of the modern British navy. She was very British, and was considered quite liberal in outlook. After her husband was removed from his office for "being too German" during the First World War (he died a broken man in 1921), she retired to Kensington Palace. She would step in as Prince Philip's grandmother and raise him after his own mother, the deaf Princess Alice, was institutionalized by a range of issues in the 1920's and 30's.

Prince Charles was christened on Wednesday December 15th 1948. The cinema newsreel was the only way the public could see pictures of the christening. BBC Television Service on this date was on air for barely 4 hours, and had no television news program.

Dying old really is a special thing (decades go by - you get to see and experience so many interesting things). I feel sorry for younger ppl who’ll never know how beautiful life was before devices were glued to hands, who’ll never understand what nostalgia means. Ppl these days are too robotic (not memorable, same-ey).

To the Queen’s right, you can see Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine. A very rare sighting. She and Irene were the only two surviving sisters out of four. Her other two sisters Alexandra, the Empress of Russia, and Elisabeth, were both brutally murdered during the revolution.
