WIRELESS MTB Shifting for $600 - SRAM GX AXS
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 вер 2024
- Despite its strong on-trail performance, the price tag associated with SRAM's wireless AXS drivetrains has been a hurdle many riders just could not get over. For two years now, the AXS systems have remained items for elite-level builds only. Enter SRAM's all-new GX AXS upgrade kit. It is by no means what we would call inexpensive, but it does lower the barrier of entry to the world of electronic, wireless shifting. We've been logging miles on this new drivetrain for some time now. Let's find out what it is, how it performs, and whether it's a viable alternative to SRAM's higher-tiered offerings.

what i think next from sram is either 13 speed or wireless brakes
@@plproductions8887 nope 😣
So cool to see the trickle down even if you aren't interested in the specific equipment.
I entered the competition, but even if I don't win, SWIMBA, and their trail users do. I doubt I will ever get there, but who knows! Thanks for the always rad content Vital
Thanks for the awesome comparison video! It’s great that you were actually able to give us your real use experience with the GX AXS upgrade! Can you do a comparison between the standard GX and the GX AXS? I’m curious how they each perform in comparison to each other and also which GX configuration is lighter.
AXS Lockout would be nuts.
"I actually bent the derailleur hanger"..no shit.
Its the best SRAM product Ive ever owned
I think SRAM should also advertise this to be compatible with 12speed Shimano drivetrain as well because it is.
So it will work with Shimano 12sp 52 Cassette and Shimano chainring? Cheers.
@@bruce6rt yes. provided you have a SRAM compatible chain.
@@Bangbangboom51 nope...if running Shimano cassette and chainring, you'll need a Shimano chain as well.
@@michiganstate149 there's some decent chain brands that's are cross compatible with sram and shimano chainring and cassettes such as KMC and PYC. There's definitely more but couldn't remember them all.
I’m waiting for SX AXS
Nice review guys! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
This paired with Shimano HG+ would be a great combo.
I was thinking the same exact thing
Jazz hands for the win. Thanks Brad!
Next thing I want to see now that we have the SRAM battery ecosystem; AXS heated shoes for those winter months. I'm being completely honest here, my feet freeze solid in the winter.
I just bought a complete avs gx drivetrain for 800 cad thanks to black friday :)
thanks Brad!
You forgot to put the messy cable onto the weighing scale
Replace my sx derailleur for this..
$409 now!!!! 😁😁😁😁
Sram is a legend. They know what the riders feelings and budget.
Were still talking about a 450€ derailieur.
Better than before, but still expensive as hell.
My shimano deore shifts like butter. How about disc brakes that Don't need to messed with
So whats the Problem with wired Shifting that this is supposed to solve?
theres no inherent "problem". For Pro racers however, wireless droppers and deraillers make it a lot easier for mechanics in say ews to replace a torn off derraileur or a failing dropper post. It also eliminates any changes in shift quality when the frame is flexing, and provides more accurate shifting. For the masses, i doubt it will be worth it, but theres definitely people who will be a fan of this.
I usually go trails and downhill park on the same bike. For dh park, I do have a spare set of tougher wheels, and I do remove anything that I don't use at the park - a chain, rear cassette (spare wheel does not have it), a derailleur, droppler. This makes the bike much lighter, especially the unsprung masses. So with wireless shifting and droppler the "DH rebuild" takes just 5 minutes, while with wires - you know. Invested here, saved on 2nd bike.
@@MAXlMUS yeah, there’s definitely other advantages to it, i just meant the main ones, for me personally i have an ads dropper for 3 bike since one of them failed on me, and my trail bike didn’t come with one. so i sold the working dropper and paid 500 for 3 bikes. so yeah there’s reasons to have axs. i might even get the gx axs when my 11 speed nx drivetrain is work out so i can just swap the derailleur from bike to bike
My point exactly. I've been mountain biking for over 25 years with a fleet of bikes at any given time. About half the bikes I've owned I've built and I'm in the middle of building one right now. I've ridden on all sorts of terrain all year round in all four seasons and not once have I ever had a problem that a wireless system would have prevented. However, I have heard and seen many occasions of people who do have wireless systems running out of battery power because they forgot to charge them or some other technical issues. I again say wireless shifting systems are a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Pros use them because they get them for free from their sponsors and it helps them advertise. If they were to fund their own equipment I bet not many will even bother as any advantage is minimal compared to the cost and technical risk.
No one said anything about solving problems. If you can afford it, wireless is much more convenient setup wise and works way better under heavy load. Only downside is the 20h battery life.
best review yet, Thank you
Thanks for this great video
thank you sir!!
if the weight is only the difference b/w x01, i'l go with gx for the price..
nice!!! i wish I had some of that stuff 😃😃😃
Do you Have a kit for road bikes I intend to build a bullhorn handle bar set up the road bike brakes shifters will not work the shifters for the mountain bike is best plus front derail......
Wow..😍
How I wish..
Nah I'll stick to the X01 cable. Especially the shifter looks like something you will easily damage during the crash... The only good thing about the AXS might be, that it hopefully will bring down price of the cable systems...
Anyone with an existing 12 speed can be In the axs game eh? Even NX?
Yes, even NX is compatible.
Nice!
The Eagle AXS derailleur is HIGHLY PRONE TO DAMAGE. It sticks out too far and if you set your bike on the ground it may pivot on the derailleur and damage the pins and rivets which permanently ruins the shifting quality. I had this happen and ZERO help from SRAM after 2 rides!!!!
You laid your bike down on the cassette side?? 😂🤣
20$ for plastic cover... You can buy cheap derailleur for 20$.
Next: electronic brake
Imagine if it runs out of charge 😂
Mercedes did the brake by wire for a few years. Lots of problems there
Followed by fully autonomous mountain bike 🤣
Can you make it work with 11 speed cassete?
This will only work with 12-speed drivetrains. The spacing between cogs on an 11-speed cassette is different.
I bought xo eagle because of the status of gx if i want to sell my bike xo would be worth more and i paid 580 for my xo upgrade kit
Next. Rival etap
Can you use other crank set
Next from Sram.. wireless brake.
'What's next from Sram?' You say. How about a cassette that doesn't have a 10 tooth difference between 1st and 2nd gear? So dumb.
Mmm for me and most people thats fine second gear you can climb most stuff and if you change to first you are probably tired so the difference is not that much and to me its fine having a little more cadence sonetimes
Actually works pretty good
yeah this low gear sizing is all marketing hype and it's getting out of control. I'm happy my newest bike still came with the 50t. I can't imagine the cadence jump from 42 to 52 tooth, and worse going from 52 up to a 42 tooth. You'd have to spin at like 100rpm to keep it anywhere close to 80 rpm after the shift, sounds like a nightmare to me.
I just don't understand what was the problem with wired shifting, it really feels like a solution to a non existent problem. Why put so much technology on something that can get torn off in the middle of a ride with a poorly placed rock? If they wanna evolve shifting they should invest into gearbox technology and if they so want wireless it could make its way into gearboxes instead of that fugly gripshifter
Because they can and the people buy it :D
Check with the people who have made the switch. The ones I know would never go back.
I just try one for the first time.....they change soooo smooth, other than battery life its perfect changing
It’s technology. Either you’re in, or you’re out. As long as you are happy. No right or wrong. Shred on
I'm surprise that electronic shifting is not lighter than wire shifting ....
You’re doing the same content as Pink Bike and Rob Rides EMTB at the exact same time 🤔
you mean they're doing the same thing we're doing? HAHAHA - all of these new products have very specific launch dates, so they all hit the channels at the same time.
@@vitalmtb yeah but which one do we watch first!? 🤔
Im guessing its embargoed
@@hotf00t13 yeah it totally is lol
Yes, but while pinkbike and rob asked softball questions like does it shift well and is it durable, only Vital used the derailleurs to fight each other on a table. That’s groundbreaking coverage and the pinnacle of journalistic integrity. Well done vital!!
$20 for a piece of plastic that should have been included with the derailleur.
Great idea. But still needs improvement. Been using the XX1 on a Levo S Works for a year. Snap 4 rainbow chains. Lag lag lag! Sent unit back to SRAM multiple times still lag lag lag. System also lacks feel. Will go to a steel chain next. Failing this. Will switch back to wire. Also owner of Levo turbo with no problem what so ever using GX Eagle. Don’t believe the hype.
Do you still need to tune it or does it auto tune
it doesn't auto-tune, but tuning is incredibly easy and fine-tuning derailleur position can be done for every cog on the cassette.
Is this compatible on my 12 speed NX cassette?
In case you didn’t get an answer. Yes it is.
@@evanmiddlemas9961 Ty dosa this work with 9 speed?
I like that you hit the derailleur to show durability. But you used your hand. How about a rock? Seriously, what Sram’s replacement policy if it gets damaged in a crash? If it’s as durable as they imply, I would hope they send you a new one.
Smart enough not to use even a small rock. We all know this thing will bust easy with a hit on a rock. It is strange that one would put on such a delicate item on a bike that you know is used for riding in harsh terrain.
@@alexunlvit's funny reading all these comments 2 years later when we know the GX AXS derailleur has proven to be one of the most durable ones on the market.
Is this only compatible with 12 speed cassettes?
Yes. Only SRAM 10-50, 10-52, and 11-50 tooth 12spd cassettes will work with this kit
@@sufyanm4661 Any cassette will work. You can set the gears however you want.
@@obi-wankenobi9871 are you sure? i’m certain the ratios are different or shifting
There is no trim per gear. SRAM has stated it already. No AXS review ever mentions it.
@@maromi- I thought so. there should need to be since if there was people could use other brands of cassettes which i assume sram doesn’t want
Oooooooh yes!!!
Can't imagine what you gonna do in the middle of a ride when you can't shift because the battery is dead😂
you just pedal it like a single speed noob. And by the way, it has a low battery warning light indicator which will blink for hours before the battery is completely drain.
YEEEEW
what the hell nx axs? NX is shit which breaks in one month of really hard riding
Never mind NX AXS, I'm waiting for SX AXS. I still see wireless shifting as a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
Cable stretch, cable breakages, cable
routing, outer cable rot, gummy cables, slower shifting. Plus axs only requires a tiny press for actuation.
@@turbolevo8703 Hilarious. Yeah, OK.
With my NX I could never get it to work flawlessly. Neither could my bike shop. Worked for a while then needed adjustment all the time. I use archer now and have set it up once and haven’t needed to adjust it for almost a year now. With micro adjustment you can really dial it.
@@tmwei396
You’re a self-described novice mate.
Why should I listen to you?
I can smell that shimano is going to come up with something $200 and has better performance.
really nobody needs. i think it's great not to have any electronic waste on my bike!
Yeah I agree - don’t want to charge my bike or it’s parts! 😂
As is your choice, now allow people to make their choice. It isn’t up to you to decide what other people need. This is an advancement you are free to reject.
