The song wasn't written by the Nazis, but from today's perspective, it certainly has a lot to do with national socialism. The Weimar Republic initially adopted all 3 stanzas of the song as its anthem in their original meaning. The Nazis only used and still use the first stanza, while misinterpreting the meaning of it. The Federal Republic eventually adopted only the third stanza as the national anthem. While "Deutschland über Alles" originally proclaimed that the most important (political) goal/thing is to achieve a united Germany (which did not exist before 1870/71) it completely changed its meaning after this innitial goal/topic was achieved and since the reports from the Westfront in 1914 it is directly linked to German hypernationalism, imperialism and alures to world domination and supremacy.

Right. The so called "Lied der Deutschen" was created in 1841 when Germans were dreaming of a united nation. Sadly the lyrics were misused in our darkest times and since they are referring e.g. to non existing borderlines it is uncommon to sing the complete song. Our national anthem is just the third part.
I can understand how they would mistakenly play the Soviet and nazi anthems, cause they both have the same music as the modern ones, but come on, was Kazakhstan a joke?!
It isn't even the nazi anthem. That text existed a century before the nazi's were even a thing. and remained in use decades after WW2. The switch to using the third stanza only is quite recent. (1990)
The third stanza isn't that recent. It was a political decision after the second world war to turn Tage third into the official text. The other two - even though not officially forbidden - were politically vetoed. It is true that the first two had been composed long before the NS-regime. The text alluded to claiming a common German spirit among the territories settled by Germans against feudal oppression of those times praising the Germanic virtues. The text wasn't suitable anymore claiming Germany above all extending from a river in the east to a river in the west, from the south to the north - none of them in present day Germany. Emphasizing the German woman and the German wine in the second one was also an exaltation of features that reminded of claiming to be somehow superior to te rest of the world. This is why the first and the second stanza are ill-regarded in Germany.
@@juanfran579 I)ronically the second stanza was supoosed to be the "drinking song" part because the original version of the song was also written to be used as one for drinking. They do not "mistake" it for being Nazi, it just really is highly nationalistic "Deutschland über alles in der Welt" [Germany above anything else in the world] and claiming lands that are not German anymore "(...) bis an die Memel" [until the Memel (a river in Lithuania)]. If you are not able to comprehend what's wrong with that and why many Germans willfully reject this then you should take some class in politics and history.
As an Aussie I would just laugh if someone played the New Zealand Anthem accidently, their country is like our sibling, but if it was any other country's anthem I would be offended.
6:53 Not illegal. That would be weird if it were illegal because the full song - including the first stanza - WAS the anthem of Germany until 1991. When it was played for official purposes they only used the 3rd but the full song WAS the official anthem. This changed in 1991 and since then its only the 3rd stanza that is officially the anthem. So the 1st and 2nd stanzas are just not part of the anthem but its not illegal to sing them at all - just seen as a pretty bad gaffe when somebody does it.
@Grey Donovun I would assume because of the Oder-Neiße line which Germany agreed upon with Poland in 1990? So the stanza would be wrong, saying Germany extends to the Memel in the east

6:53 Small correction: The first verse of the German anthem is not illegal to sing at all. It has been decreed, however, that the third verse of the anthem is to sing during official occasions. So they picked the right anthem, the singer just sang the wrong verse.
Bigger correction: It's a regular stanza from the German national hymn written in 1841 and has absolutely nothing to do with National Socialism.
So today the first stanza is neither part of the national anthem of the Federal Republic, and the only ones who still sing it are neo-Nazis.
@@RayvenGuard That's not true. As you said, the Nazis only sang the first stanza in conjunction with the Horst-Wessel-Lied while singing the third stanza was forbidden by law.
So singing the original Deutschlandlied (Song of the Germans) with it's 3 stanzas is perfectly fine and there are many people in Germany and Austria doing so - for example traditional students' associations.

My point is that specifically because of its usage as a propaganda tool in both world wars and its contamination by the nazi party, in conjunction with the text of the song being outdated, it isnt used anymore and is, although not outright banned, shunned from (german) society.

6:54 to clarify it. It is not illegal to sing it. The anthem was just narrowed down to the third verse because the first verse is often misunderstood.
thank you, i was looking if somebody else was making that clear!
Right. The so called "Lied der Deutschen" was created in 1841 when Germans were dreaming of a united nation. Sadly the lyrics were misused in our darkest times and since they are referring e.g. to non existing borderlines it is uncommon to sing the complete song. Our national anthem is just the third part.
@@mahnman1404 a pity you leave out the verse about German women and German beer!
The whole Song is „Das Lied der Deutschen“ (the Song of the German) But only the third stanza is the National Anthem of Germany.
Its not only misunderstood its also factual wrong the Rivers thats are Mentioned arent Part of Germany anymore
Tage = the
@@ajvanmarle yeah i know but still it was used by the nazis and those lyricist are associated with the nazis
@@juanfran579 I)ronically the second stanza was supoosed to be the "drinking song" part because the original version of the song was also written to be used as one for drinking. There are even some altered third stanza lines for the drinking version suggested by the original author :D
The second stanza simply just sounds weird today but it has nothing to do with any superiority. Its just horribly outdated as far as cultural values go. Also its singing about wine...we arent french so that one had to go :D
6:53 it is not illegal to sing the German anthem in Germany 🇩🇪
People just avoid the first part because some mistake it for being Nazi (which it isn’t)

@@jjsim3340 makes sense
What if they played the British anthem? Or the Soviet one? Or the Nazi Germany one?
6:53 Not illegal. That would be weird if it were illegal because the full song - including the first stanza - WAS the anthem of Germany until 1991. When it was played for official purposes they only used the 3rd but the full song WAS the official anthem. This changed in 1991 and since then its only the 3rd stanza that is officially the anthem. So the 1st and 2nd stanzas are just not part of the anthem but its not illegal to sing them at all - just seen as a pretty bad gaffe when somebody does it.
domesticated simps
also the first stanza is older than national socialism, so that part of the subtitles isn't quite right, either
@@Leo1239150 Yep. It has absolutely nothing to do with National Socialism. Those rivers have been the German border for centuries.
@Grey Donovun I would assume because of the Oder-Neiße line which Germany agreed upon with Poland in 1990? So the stanza would be wrong, saying Germany extends to the Memel in the east
@Grey Donovun Because uo until 1990 West Germany more or less claimed the old borders.

@@freyalarsen6233 all those hymns used by monarchies are not exactly symbols of the countries, like e.g. flags are. They are prayers for the health and success of the monarch: "God Save the King", "Gott erhalte unsern Kaiser", "Боже, Царя храни" (God Save the Czar) etc. That's why they often use the same or similar melodies in different countries, and the lyrics are standard. Distinguishing countries or national cultures is not their function, just praying for the monarch. Probably it's more correct to call them hymns (like religious chants), not anthems.
