The Gary Indiana Railman does not endorse scared people to travel to these spots. If you’re not scared, I encourage you to travel to these spots.
Monday February 18th, 2013 around 3:30pm I sat under the Penn-Wabash bridge to rest from filming in that area. Luck was on my side as I caught the illusive Sugar Train headed Northwest along the old Pennsy route, now owned by CSX and leased by NS. NS 5087 & 5264 slowly chugged along the old rickety tracks that ran under the bridge. You can’t see the engineer or conductor but they had their heads in their hands looking bored to death. The engines and cars sway heavily.
You can hear two horns blowing at various times during this video but @2:51 that is NOT the NS blowing its horn, it is a South Shore train traversing the Penn-Wabash bridge overhead. There are really cool spots in this area of Gary. The Penn-Wabash bridge area is one of my favorites and not many people come here at all.
About 20 or so years ago Amtrak used these very tracks to service Chicago out of Valpo. Amtrak stopped servicing Gary altogether in 1993. As a result, the tracks and related infrastructure fell into deep disrepair. Fortunately this entire stretch of track was repurposed and rebuilt in 2015. Usually these tracks saw very little activity except for the Sugar Train running through maybe 3 times a week if that. Today, as a result of the repairs, these tracks are in constant usage on a daily basis by Norfolk Southern manifest freights coming into Kirk Yard from the west.

Actually, they are on the parallel ex Wabash 4th District. The old PRR paralleled these tracks for a short distance here.

That's correct. The NS train is on the Wabash side. The old PRR is behind me, about 20-25 or so yards away. I generally call this area the Pennsy Route. Apologize for that.

There is a lot of Chatter on FB page, Pennsylvanian RR In Indiana about branch trimming and clearing the way north of the Tollway. Do you have any idea as to whats going on?

How are you doing, Mr. Grise? I have no idea. I haven't been out to Tolleston Junction since April. I do plan on going back. I'm waiting for the perfect weather. Tomorrow would be great but I'll be busy. We got a couple of very nice low temp/low humidity days coming up towards the end of the week. More likely I'll head out to Tolleston then.
