  • Today we have a little tutorial on how to clone a Solid State Drive (SSD) using Acronis True Image. I did this with going from a 500GB NVMe ssd to a 1TB NVMe ssd. (This can also be done with a Hard Disk Drive or HDD)

I will do manual partitioning, as my source HDD is a bit smaller than the destination SSD. Will the cloning software automatically initialize the new destination SSD, or is this something I have to do beforehand?

When target of the cloning is larger than the source, Acronis creates Unallocated partition which is not adjacent main user partition. So it is necessary to use Acronis disk director to merge these 2 partitions. Let’s provide step by step instructions for that

Craig, one major item not mentioned was where did you hook up the new drive to make the clone? I am about to do the same (500GB m.2 to 1TB m.2), but I only have one m.2 slot in my PC.
Also, I have seen a couple of videos where they have Acronis, but they make a bootable drive on a USB drive, and then boot to that USB by changing the boot options in BIOS. Is one method better than the other? And finally, if I use the automatic option, won't the new drive show up as 1TB? If not, how would I re-size the partitions? Thanks for the video.

Hello, thank you for the thoughtful video! I was able to follow it & clone a new bigger hard drive. I am more of a software person by nature so I am really grateful for this video!
Would you be willing to try & assist me with an issue I’m running into? I cloned my main C drive with Windows, maming it bootable, switched out the SSD’s after, then played some games, but notice that my Windows now completely locks up after sitting idle for a little bit. I did run sfc /scannow in CMD, which found some corrupted Windows files & repaired, Windows update says I’m up to date, & Acronis is showing no issues with the new SSD. I went from 512 GB Western Digital Blue to 2TB Western Digital Black SN850x, & I’m running Windows 11. There were thermal pads behind the old SSD that I maintained in place behind the new. My rig is an MSI Raider 75. I unseated & reseated my 32gigs of ram back into place.
Thank you for any thoughts you can provide!

Try to allow it from the windows security settings, sometimes it won't allow to add a hard drive and then try again. Make sure to use same company hard drive if you use the software from eg western digital. The acronis will work only with the brand if you have downloaded from the SSD manufacturer website. Wish you the success.

Hey, your video was very informative.
Still, I'm having bit of a problem while trying to add an SSD to my laptop. I'm trying to clone my laptop's 1 TB HDD (only 380 GB used space) to a new Crucial 500GB P1 NVMe M.2 SSD, but the Acronis software keeps on showing error message saying "you need additional 254 GB of free disk space available on the target hard drive to complete the operation with the current filter. Please exclude more files or folders and then try again." even though the total used space on my original HDD is less than 400 GB.
I only want to clone the OS drive, so I have already excluded everything other than C: drive (120 GB) but it still shows that i need additional 109.4 GB of Disk space!!!
I'm unable to see any logic here.Kindly make a video regarding such problem or point me towards a solution. Thanks again

as I said before all computer GURUS always make the mistake that they think and assume that all viewers and audience are versed in technology. Once the cloning took place, viewers do need to see how to get into BIOS and select Primary disc and Windows Boot Manager for this cloning process to be completed successfully. I do not know if these gurus are lazy or cocky, they all seem to show the easy stuff never go the extra mile, for that reason, I seldom or never subscribe to them let alone play with their little bell.
