    I was both shocked and delighted to hear that you don't place so much importance on speed work for a first marathon. I will occasionally push myself to run faster but I don't enjoy it so running then becomes a chore...and I end up hurting. . I'm more proud of the fact that I ran 18 Miles than a fast 5k. I'm doing the London Marathon virtual run so training begins soon. Great video, first time I've come across this Channel, it's a definite subscribe.

      Awesome! Thanks Lily. Yes specificity is the name of the game for me and although you could throw the odd high intensity run in to marathon training I’m a huge believer in just getting to the start line first and foremost!! And if you’re not planning to sprint a marathon then you could probably do without it 😂

    I just rewatched this video. I've been doing local 5ks, and what I've discovered is there are a lot of folks in my age group, but the 60s and 70s, far fewer. So my goal is to still be running 🏃‍♀️ when I'm much older, so I can finally win my age group! Aka my current goal is to be a runner for life! 😃 Plus if I'm the only 70 year old out there, slowing down with age won't matter.
    I don't have local park run, so I try to do 1 charity 5k per month, and get at least a little quicker year over year on the same course. Thank you for sharing your insights, inspiration and motivation.

    Goddamit I was about to fall asleep and you pumped me up! This year I set two goals, one half marathon and one full marathon but for sure journey won't stop there... I have a confession to make. I like pain, I like to try and push to the limits and I want to reach a point where I feel like I can't run anymore but train more and more to surpass this feeling on my next run. Of course I know how important is to not overdo it but thankfully I have you to remind me of that when I feel tempted! Ultimately I want to try and run ultra marathons but I know it will take me sometime to reach this level. Keep up the great work guys! As always top quality content!

    I actually found your video on the 'ultimate marathon plan' and am currently using that to train for my first ever half marathon (haven't picked one because I'm not sure where we'll be living yet) and if the circumstances are right will continue to a marathon! I have my (cancelled) 5K race on 2/21 that I will run on that day anyway for time. Your tip 6 is the one that really spoke to me. In the past I've always picked a race, followed a training plan, then fell off because I didn't have anything to train for after because it was just about getting to the race. I am ready to make this a habit whether there is a race or not!

    • @ThisMessyHappy

  • @malsbals

    My first run was on 8/11/22. Not a race. Just a run. Why? Because a few of my crazy friends convinced me to do a burro race. A unique Colorado sport where one runs about on a mountain while tethered to a donkey. Yes. And the race was in 4 weeks. 7.3 miles at 10,000 feet with a 1000 feet elevation gain. I came in dead last. But kept running! Today I completed my first 5k trail race. Onwards! I want to keep going, but I don’t want to sign up for another race too soon, because my goal isn’t really to have as fast a time as possible or anything. I am just amazed that I can run! I hope I can go for a run in the mountains and enjoy it. That’s my goal.

    Usually a triathlete, but because of schedule chaos, am training for a BQ at the end of May. PB is 3:36. Need a 3:25 (officially), but a 3:23 would be better. I run 2 days on, 1 day off. I do 1 long run, either two threshold runs or one and an up a mountain down a mountain run, and either 1 or 2 easy runs depending on the week. Still bike and swim each 3-4 times a week.

    • @ThisMessyHappy
      @ThisMessyHappy  3 роки тому

      Sweet baby Jesus that’s a lot of training Mike!! But as you say, you’re an idiot (triathlete) like me 😂 what do your tempo runs consist of? Interval tempos or steady state?

    • @mikedickerson3944
      @mikedickerson3944 3 роки тому

      @@ThisMessyHappy Got a lot of variety with intervals. Lots of 2 miles ~15 secs over/unders marathon pace. 2-3 mile intervals 30 secs under goal pace. Good chunk are 40/10s 30/20s. All sorts of fun. No track intervals. Strides though at end of easy and long runs. Increasing amount of race pace in long run. And lastly, because I’ve been injury prone, not going over 18 miles on long runs. But when wanting a looong run, I’ll be getting on the trainer for an hour beforehand.

    I'm thinking of changing my training plan up now after what you've said. I'm running an ultra in June (hopefully!) and I only started running in May last year seriously. When I trained for my half marathon building distance and doing speedwork killed me. Over the winter I did only base training and I've made so much more progress staying in those easy HR zones. I'm in recovery week now but thinking for my next block staying in just those easy steady zones

    • @ThisMessyHappy

Almost two weeks off running now done some s&c this week and my knee feels so much better it don't pop and click now. 👍 so I'm thinking at least 3 more weeks off. I am also going to be training to become a runner again with London Mara as a significant part of my journey, it's my kick start. I did Bolton IM in 2017 and a couple of trail marathons during my uni days and have fallen of the fitness wagon. I get back on and fall off again with no goals. You are absolutely right about not focusing on LM as just a goal, this is where I have gone wrong in the past, cross the finish line and thats it, goal complete, now what?? I have been playing around with MAF training for the last 4 months and just trying to figure out what works best for me. I think it was the gentle too relaxed jog down hill so I'm sticking with Jack Danials Marathon pace a few weeks and build to HM pace goal a few weeks (4:15/km) then to Interval a few weeks before dropping back to my goal pace prior to race. 3:45/km just not happening this round so I get some consistency back. I have a bad history of Achilles and calf issues so I now run 80-90% of my sessions in zone 2 so nice and easy with 1 session a week tempo. Yes at the stage we’re at with a good number of years running behind us a half marathon seemed the sensible option to keep us in a holding pattern but if you’re newer to running it wouldn’t be a bad thing to maybe even do less. The aim is really to keep yourself challenged but not too much that it’s going to injure you. It’s even pushing Mary and I!

    So, I have a place in the 2021 Brighton Marathon moved over twice from 2020. The first block of training we got up to 20 miles and then lockdown hit so after the initial disappointment I went back to my 3 or 4 runs a week and then waited for the 2nd training block. That time we got up to 16 miles and have since carried on keeping up our long runs to a minimum of 10 miles and pushing up to a half once a month when work/kids/time permits. We’re hoping this will give us a good base for starting the next block in the summer. Does this sound ok? Total novice at all this. Training for my first marathon (virtual) 22 week plan.. im on week 19. And I'm not sure how but my left groin /hip area feels off...no pain...just like I'm wobbly on it and not strong. I've been taking Epsom salt baths. And stretching my hips and legs and thighs. What else can I try...will the KT tape help?

      Do you foam roll? Or do s&c? Technique work? If you don’t do one or more of those I’d start there 😊👍🏻

    I’ve just found out I’ve got a charity place in the London Marathon this year! I did Couch to 5K and finished at the start of January, I’m getting sub 30 at around 28 mins now! What do you suggest as a training plan for me? Been watching your videos for a while and your doing amazing!

    • @ThisMessyHappy
      @ThisMessyHappy  3 роки тому

      Well, firstly congrats that’s awesome!! Secondly, I’d focus on building consistency at low levels/distances for a few weeks and then start the training plan (maybe my marathon one) 25 weeks out. People say 16 weeks but why not take longer? To me 16 weeks is the absolute minimum not the gold standard. Also, thanks for the kind words 😊

      I’m going to start week 10 of your plan tomorrow and then that’ll take me all the way through to the London Marathon week! Excited to see how it goes!!!

    Hello, I enjoy the videos a lot, and I thank you for this information that I benefited from. I participated in the 5 kilo program. I want to know what after I achieve the 5 kilometer run. Is there a specific program to maintain fitness. The message is via Google Translate

      Hi, yes you could either do the ultimate training plan (which has a maintenance phase in it) or there is a specific plan to maintain distance. They are all in the training plans playlist. Thanks for the message 😊👍🏻

      Ok, I’ll do you this deal. I won’t be condescending any more. But I’d like to ask you a genuine question. Are you able to tell me why you, I’m assuming a grown woman, would come to a channel based around positivity and write negative criticism of someone you don’t know. As in, what motivated you to think it’s ok to come and write something unkind about someone else? I’m genuinely interested in the why behind your actions. Thanks in advance (if you choose to answer) 😊

      @@ThisMessyHappy I watched your video because I am training for the New York City Marathon and am watching inspiring videos as I train. I had NO intention of looking for a child-man who bites his fingernails -- that was purely UN-intentional that I found that jarring sight. You did it, and then showed it in the video - so I assume you are proud of your childish "nervous habit." LOL.
