Bama went on to win 28 straight games after this loss, including a 13-0 National Championship season in 1992. The win streak finally came to an end on Oct 16th, 1993 with a 17-17 tie vs Tennessee. This was a good time to be a Bama fan. Stallings left after the 96 season and a dark time began for Alabama. Between NCAA Probation and a few bad coaching hires, Bama wouldn't be restored to a national powerhouse until Saban's second season in 2008. You know the rest. RTR!

I was a teenager and there that night. Remember it rained so hard right before kickoff. It was like all those old tough breaks from the Gators past were washed away and they came out and really stuck it to Alabama

How this Florida team did not go undefeated is beyond me. Losses to Syracuse and Notre Dame were inexplicable.

Syracuse was freaking good and they didn't lose in that Carrier Dome. Against Notre Dame we just gave out. Remember we were coming off probation so we didn't have the depth. We just gave out and then the rode the Bus on us.

That is awesome. My first ever Gator game was against New Mexico State. That was the day Emmitt ran for like 300 plus yards. We had a kid named Donald Douglas who had a rocket of an arm. It's amazing because I hear people act as if they are so surprised about Kyle Trask and what he accomplished. Heck Shane Matthews wasn't even on the depth chart. Thank goodness for Spurrier who came in the next year and gave Shane a chance. Then there are the people who think Ron Zook wasn't a good coach. I beg to differ. Zook was a very good coach.

I agree about Zook being a good head coach. Zook's only problem was he was the guy hired right after Spurrier.

Heck yes they did. You couldn't have paid me enough to get my butt out there with those Gator defenses. Monte Grow and Ephesians Bartley were knocking people's heads off, LOL. And remember, 1990 Tim Paulk hit that kid from Bama and broke him up. However, the next year after this game in the SEC Championship that Bama Defense was one of the best college defenses ever. Nobody even came close to beating that team except for Florida. Erict Rhett will forever have my respect for what he did the day. They were lighting him up. Rhett was hurting and Spurrier walks up and says, E Rhett, you ready? You are going to have to run harder than you ever have. We came within an eyelash of destroying the college football system of today, LOL.

Things for Gene Stallings were looking bleak after this game. In 1 season and 2 games, his record at Alabama stood 8-6. Alabama lost this game 35-0 and had been blown out by Louisville 34-7 in the Fiesta (Bama's only score was a pick six against Ville's backup, now HC Jeff Brohm). Add a 9-0 loss to Penn State and three of those 6 losses were offensive shut outs. Wins over Tennessee and Auburn were the only thing that kept Bama fans from revolting.
The following week Alabama had a gut-check game against a Georgia team that would finish 9-3. Georgia missed a couple of scoring opportunities and Bama's D rose to the occasion for a 10-0 win over Georgia, that started what would become a 28-game win streak. That 10-0 win over Georgia may not have been pretty, but I think it was the most important game in Stallings' tenure. Somehow they found a way to win that game, which proved to be a theme for the 1991 season, as they won their final six games of the season by seven points or less.

Beginning with that Georgia game, they went on an absolute tear. Stallings’ record at Alabama from UGA 10-0 afterwards: 62-10-1!
(And even that tie against Tennessee in 1993 one could make the case it was a net positive)

@@randyjohnson6845 sounds right cuz back then the south end zone was those temporary bleachers you described. They were constructing the end zone after that season of 1979. Also, another interesting trivia from that game. Afterward Bear Bryant called Florida a “sleeping giant” and said if they could get a good coach down there they’d be unstoppable. Bear was right, as usual.

But after that game, Bama would not lose for 31 consecutive games. Just a testimony to the fantastic job Stallings did to save the 1991 season (lots of close games) and build the foundation for a National Championship and three consecutive SEC Championship game appearances.

Tim Marsh Stallings did a great job at Bama. His only hang up was Florida, aside from his undefeated 1992 national championship season. In 1991 and 1994 his only loss of those seasons was to Florida.

They won every other game that season and finished 11-1… So you are saying that they started juicing the very next week? Clown!
They were a physically talented, young team that learned something about themselves after this loss and grew from the lesson. Discipline, focus, and a new quarterback (Jay Barker) were the missing pieces until this game (although I realize Barker didn’t take over until LSU game a few weeks later).
