The reason the 7.3 was so popular , was the flat torque curve, better than 480lbft from 1600-2600. The reason most people "feel" the cummins pull better is because of torque rise. The similar generation cummins engine was 215hp@2700rpm(manual only) that is only 418lbft. As you lug back the torque rises, the leverage to do the work increases(ability to do work, even though you're going slower). The powerstorke didn't have the torque rise because it pulled better all the way through the rpm range. Same applies to current trucks. 1000lbft ram feels stronger because 400hp is only 750lbft@2800rpm. Where as the 1050lbft Ford has 959lbft@2600rpm(475hp). The torque rise from hp peak to torque peak is only 90lbft for the fprd and 250lbft for the ram. So the illusion is again favors ram and the I6. Where the powerstroke absolutely destroyed the ram on all fronts. The competition would be closer if transmissions were similar. But a 3.55 axle Ford tromped a 4.10 Ram with ease, a 4.10 Ford would have embarrassed the Ram even more
Torque curve of a motor is very important in terms of actual performance and the consumer's feeling about the vehicle. Just as much as gearing and responsiveness There is a reason some cars with "weak" power numbers feel "faster" than one would expect....comes down to how the power is delivered. I engineered one of my motors to have a flat torque curve from 2300 rpm to 10k. Peak hp is around 7850 to 8450 and it pulls well in the lower rpm and as well as very functional in the middle of the band due to the flat torque delivery.
For what I tow and haul this truck would be great to own. Love it. I love my Ram but would like to own a Ford like that also. Thank you for the great videos brother!!

Compare a 2017 6.7 Power Stroke towing against a 2017 6.7 High Output Cummins same axle ratio same load n ull have basically the same hill towing performance. They both have a peak torque rpm of 1800 and peak HP rpm of 2800 and the Power Stroke has same or more torque and way more HP . 6.7 Power Stroke is built totally different by Ford with a longer stroke as compared to the Navistar built 7.3, 6.0, and 6.4. Same or more low end now as Cummins. Some people might think it’s higher rpm than the inline 6 because 2 extra pistons always sounds like higher rpm but if u watch the tachometer ull c the rpm is basically the same and the Ford 6R140 Torqshift transmission also keeps its gears better than the Aisin and therefore hill tow performance with a load is awesome low end torque

Tare weight: 3,700kg/8,160lbs is printed on the container. Truck is probably around 7,500 with you in it. Basic Big Tex 40' gooseneck trailer is around 8,000#. Noticed the vibration from the worn concrete road surface once you were east of the pass; I hate towing that stretch!
Hey, I'm jealous about your gearing. My 95 with a zf5 is pulling 2500rpm at 65mph in 5th. Mine is still all stock 215hp, so its a bit of a dog. Thrifty on fuel though, my best so far has been 17.6mpg and usually averages 16 to 17mpg.
I had a 1995 Ford F250 powerstroke it pulled better than my 1999 dodge 2500 Cummins diesel the dodge handled weight better but was underpowered it may have been gear ratio I have a 2016 6.7 powerstroke diesel it's a animal
Thats not even a fair test. The new power stroke makes about 440 hp and about 950 lb/ft. The first gen cummins makes 160hp and 400 lb/ft. the second gen isnt much better at most you can get 245 hp and 505lb/ft of torque. I can tell you now the truck that makes 2 to 4 times the horsepower and double the torque will win
I got a 97 f350 7.3 with 293k on it. It had 7 yrs 30k on a rebuilt e40d that just snapped something internally When empty. I scale 22k going to my tractor show i was a bit heavier for a short run once only towed heavy 400 miles maximum but the trk was a company trk before. Im just picking my trk up tomorrow? with a jasper tranny in it so hopefully im all good
Cummins low end torque is due to the inline configuration where the 7.3 is a v configuration engine plus different trucks are gonna pull different but hey at least it doesn't have the wussie leaf springs of a chevy
I'm always amazed when i look at the Ford and Dodge working along and then almost every chevy actually doing something other than grocery getting is sagging rear bumper to the road...
@@operatorbenji9735 Man I deal in cars a bunch and had to move a bunch last year so I used the duramax 3/4 tonne I had at the time to pull my small 20ft full tilt trailer just the trailer put it on the overloads. The engine had plenty of power the trans didn't amaze me all in all great for going to get groceries or go to lowes and pick up some trees or something.
26k gross puts you at about a 17k lbs trailer+load correct? Isn't this truck only rated for about 13-14ish? If so then I'm pretty impressed at the performance towing quite a few lbs over the rated limit.
I pull a 40' 10klb travel trailer with an 02' f250 similar mods chip, intake, airbags, helwig sway bar in rear, duel steering stabilizer in front. Seems between 65-70 mph is the sweet spot for the boost on the turbo. It kinda struggles in the 50-55mph range. Not sure if that's the case in your example.
@John Vande Vusse, I have the Air Lift air bags, and Hellwig 1 5/16 hevy duty rear sway bar. I have a 4r100 trans, 65-70 on relatively flat highway. Not in tow haul, after I would get up to speed change from tow tune to 100hp tune, ts chip.
@@pddieselpower this is more than a statement.....perhaps more of a question.....but is it possible to "tune" that problem away??.....I just use "canned" tunes and they drastically lowered my egt's from stock (75 horse TS-6)........I mean enough that on maybe 4-5% grade @ 8000 lbs. camper as much as 275 degrees (straight pipe)......what do you think?? :-)
So you have a more modern CUMMINS diesel that does pretty much the same if not as little bit more work than a 20 year old truck...maintaining within 10 mph of 26k load up a 6% grade at 60mph in overdrive at 5 gear on a 270,000+ mile slightly modified truck pulling more that it was originally designed pulling a storage unit that has an aerodynamic of a brick?...I think the 7.3 is still a very competent motor.
U unclip the ebpv harness cuz its pointless or u use it to ur advantage by clipping the trigger wire and running it to a toggle and boom u have a decent exhaust break with the flip of a toggle but dnt pig tail it back to the pcm just cap that so it doesnt register it anymore
Question sooo when you are on duty doing hotspot. Are you required to do sleeper berth hours in a hotel? Is there anyway around where you can put a mattress in your truck and do the ten consecutive hours in the truck without the dot getting on you?
Patrick Carcamo I thought there are requirements on how big the sleeper berth has to be to count? That’s why some companies do conversions to the back of crew cabs to provide a big enough sleeping area.
Idk yet. I know MSRP was 87ish. I requested all rebates. It's weird but that's how it went down. So upon arrival we'll revisit the topic. I'll keep you all posted
I watched this video last year, but came back to it when I saw the thumbnail pic stating the load was 13'9". And no oversize banners in sight - not that you need oversize banners for a load that's 12'3" - 12'4" tall. High cube container is 9'6" tall, and a hotshot trailer is 33 - 34" tall. So the overall height is 12'3" - 12'4". And the weight is barely over 8K... read that as the tare on all containers.
i got 205% injectors and a t4 kit with a s468, when truck was stock it did alright hauling almond equipment in the valley and could tow 6 horses over the mountains without breaking a sweat but mines a automatic but i feel like that truck should pull better
I prefer my 7.3 over my 5.9... i like how it revs , how it holds his power, and... If the 7.3 is a 9/10 engine , and the 5.9 is a 10/10 , ford trucks in that years where way better than dodge .. better brakes, better interior, better suspension, better dash, better seats ..
I'm thinking of giving up my 7.3 to go to a '15 ram with a cummins. Guess its a good move to get the luxury and dash readouts. Daily driver that will pull a 18,000 LQ horse trailer on the weekends.
@@nothanks2994 LOL. Italians are sexy as hell! If we want to hold grudges my friend, Ford shot his workers. GM screwed all the common stock holders. Chrysler paid back their loans under Iacocca. My son draws a paycheck from Cummins. I'm doing my part to support his company.

What is the maximize safe egt temps I can achieve for how long before I have to let off on the skinny petal.
I’m thinking about buying a truck just like this. Original owner. 136 k miles. I know the 7.3 well. But never had the zf6 trans. Gonna use it to tow my 11,000 pound fifth wheel. Think it will do ok?
Not bad, you keep mentioning powerstrokes and Cummins. You have drove a Duramax because I've owned all 3 and Duramax by far puts the power to the pavent more efficient then p or c
I drove all 3 and the duramax was by far the worse one I mean don’t get me wrong she pulled like a beast but the Cummins out did the powerstroke and duramax
When I pull my trailer I've 21K on the ball, with my 5" exhaust I'll run 1150° egt unless I lug her down then I downshift. The sweet spot is 2000 rpm, that's around 68mph running the big road.
@@TruthSeeker-zs5jm, I'm running a ZF-6. When I get down to about 1500 rpm is when I drop gears. 1300° is melt down I know my 1150° is high but with the few mods I have that will hopefully drop temps in the future as I keep upgrading.

It’s an old diesel let it rev around 2200 to 2750 it can do that all day no sweat
Agreed. 7.3l engines like to be above 2200 when towing. I keep mine about 2800 to 3200 all the time when I’m pulling heavy on steep grades.
I used to drive a International 4700 with the 7.3 and 5 speed spicer. That truck was doing 2100-2200rpms at 55mph.
What kind if exhaust breaking do you have,is it the stock heater flap under turbo
Lmao i have been over tiger mountain so many times that when you went down the hill towards raging river i was like holy crap i know where he is lol
No Sirr, they're all on a semi-trl CHASSIS at some point in time!!!!
Do the Rams hold 6th doing the same thing?....I hate the 3.42's in my truck. Should make a video of one of the SRW Rams towing the Storage unit.
I had a 1995 Ford F250 powerstroke it pulled better than my 1999 dodge 2500 Cummins diesel the dodge handled weight better but was underpowered it may have been gear ratio I have a 2016 6.7 powerstroke diesel it's a animal
would love to see next a stock 1st or 2nd Gen 12v dodge Cummins compared to a newer 6.7 powerstroke hill climb with a heavy load
It be a landslide victory for the 6.7
John Harris how would that even be a fair test
Im just picking my trk up tomorrow? with a jasper tranny in it so hopefully im all good
Jasper is very good...... almost as good as BD......and that is good!!!!! :-)
@@nou8257 the allison is the best trans in a diesel...
@@abolishguncontrollaws5689 Yeah I heard that a bunch and it was not that much better then any other trans i've messed with it that was a auto.
@@nou8257 you got a lemon
26k gross puts you at about a 17k lbs trailer+load correct? Isn't this truck only rated for about 13-14ish? If so then I'm pretty impressed at the performance towing quite a few lbs over the rated limit.
That truck doesnt weigh more than like 8k. hes prob got 18k behind it.
Regal2800 yeah and 18k + 8k pound truck is 26k
Trailer is probably 4-5k, container is about 3-5k truck is around 8k. So around 18-19k. Still not bad at all.
I grab alot of egts in 6th. So I have to keep it in 5th and around 62mph
Do you have helwig big wig air bags, I just had a pair installed on my 02 powerstroke and was wondering how you liked your air bags.
When you tow the 40 fter going 65 or 70 are you in tow haul mode or in overdrive.
Gt38r will fix the egt’s. 14-20k trailer 1150 egt’s. Always 55 plus grapevine or cajon pass. Keep the rpm’s at 2000-2200
So you have a more modern CUMMINS diesel that does pretty much the same if not as little bit more work than a 20 year old truck...maintaining within 10 mph of 26k load up a 6% grade at 60mph in overdrive at 5 gear on a 270,000+ mile slightly modified truck pulling more that it was originally designed pulling a storage unit that has an aerodynamic of a brick?...I think the 7.3 is still a very competent motor.
The 7.3 can get lower 20mpg mine did on the highway not towing
You towing with 3:73s or 4:10 gears?
Did you say the exhaust brake uses a "factory" flap in the turbo , or did you Add one?
I have the same truck plus dually.
He might be talking about the ebpv valve
Have you ever heard when warming up your truck that it has kind of like a wistle. Thats the valve that he is talking about
U unclip the ebpv harness cuz its pointless or u use it to ur advantage by clipping the trigger wire and running it to a toggle and boom u have a decent exhaust break with the flip of a toggle but dnt pig tail it back to the pcm just cap that so it doesnt register it anymore
Question sooo when you are on duty doing hotspot. Are you required to do sleeper berth hours in a hotel? Is there anyway around where you can put a mattress in your truck and do the ten consecutive hours in the truck without the dot getting on you?
You can go off duty and sleep in the truck just fine. Tow Piglet did a video on it I think.
Patrick Carcamo I thought there are requirements on how big the sleeper berth has to be to count? That’s why some companies do conversions to the back of crew cabs to provide a big enough sleeping area.
The requirements only apply if you log sleeper birth. Use off duty and you can sleep under your truck for all they care.
But is that conex/milvan loaded?
So far I’ve gotten 84,210 off 89,610 msrp. What did you get for your 2019
God Bless, keep the rubber side down
sounds like the exhaust back pressure valve is closed
I prefer my 7.3 over my 5.9... i like how it revs , how it holds his power, and... If the 7.3 is a 9/10 engine , and the 5.9 is a 10/10 , ford trucks in that years where way better than dodge .. better brakes, better interior, better suspension, better dash, better seats ..
I would like to purchase your truck, would you be willing to sell it
Sure. Make me an offer
No less than 1 million dollars :)
I think a better turbo would help you pull those hills.
Yo what’s with all these non diesel workers saying. My dually Cummins 99 had a 17k load 2 weeks ago going 80 mph all day trans temp 158 EGT 1000-12
7.3 don't like the wind resistance. It's not the load it's the wind
I'm thinking of giving up my 7.3 to go to a '15 ram with a cummins. Guess its a good move to get the luxury and dash readouts. Daily driver that will pull a 18,000 LQ horse trailer on the weekends.
Good call......after all, this is 2019..... :-)
Have fun with your fiat
@@nothanks2994 LOL. Italians are sexy as hell! If we want to hold grudges my friend, Ford shot his workers. GM screwed all the common stock holders. Chrysler paid back their loans under Iacocca. My son draws a paycheck from Cummins. I'm doing my part to support his company.
What is the total weight trailer and the load. I have an 02 powerstroke with the same dp tuner with a 40hp tow tune. I have to tow a 14k load from Tennessee to Michigan it's a tiny house that is 13foot 4 inches high.

Think it will do ok?
yes it would be fine
What is a f350 7.3 rated for?
20,000 minus the weight of the truck...
@@detailgeek8962 That's the first time I've heard that. In what ways it's the lowest in torque and hp. And you can definitely feel it.
13.9 tall lol 😂 and my Cummins doesn’t come out of overrrive pulling a container lol 😂
What rear end gear? I have 3:55 and I had to downshift like you pulling 11k. Only flat ground for OD.

That’s not 13.9 tall, a container trailer on actual trailer chassis which is much taller than that trailer is 13’6”
Ok Mr I towed a 12k trailer when it was really probably 8k
Chopper Dan so we are both wrong haha, van I was pulling is about 6,000lbs because it’s a reefer and trailer is 4,000 heavy duty 8lug

Last time I drove out to ellensburg from Puyallup took me 2 hours to get from 167 to i90 🙄 I was really happy I wasnt in a manual nor hauling a load
My 6bt been doing that long before that power joke ever showed up LMAO.
When I pull my trailer I've 21K on the ball, with my 5" exhaust I'll run 1150° egt unless I lug her down then I downshift. The sweet spot is 2000 rpm, that's around 68mph running the big road.
Jeff .3.2.1 1150F° is way to high, I have to turn my overdrive on and scream out 3rd gear..
@@TruthSeeker-zs5jm, I'm running a ZF-6. When I get down to about 1500 rpm is when I drop gears. 1300° is melt down I know my 1150° is high but with the few mods I have that will hopefully drop temps in the future as I keep upgrading.

detune it while your pulling hard and run a bigger exhaust the more heat you can get rid of the cooler your egts will be. Saying "spiking 1300 won't hurt it" but in honesty running it at 1200+ is shortening the life of the injectors, and everything in between

-Put the MSRP overpriced to maximize profit and hold resale value
-Make them unreliable, so dealers can make money and grow and build, bigger, nicer modern dealerships
-Make them unreliable to sell more parts
