    I have to say, that was quite entertaining. I'll never load my 6.9 turbo that much but these trucks can do amazing things as long as you're not in a hurry. And even if things break, it doesn't cost much to fix. Keep the coal burning my friend.

    These trucks used zf5/zf6 trans which have tight tolerances, and needle bearings which require atf, not gear oil. That is the only reason for excessive heat buildup. Some f350+ cab chassis used the t18/19 4 speed until 90-91 no worries on overheating those transmissions....

    I like the video! Quick FYI, using overdrive will not cause heat build up in a manual transmission. Only in an automatic towing a steep grade or when lockup cannot be achieved. The only concern for shifting will be engine power band and exhaust temps.

    • @jakewaters5563
      @jakewaters5563 3 роки тому +13

      You are correct on that, however towing heavy on over drive still isn’t the best idea because those gears in the transmission are the smallest and there for the easiest to break. Also as the engine starts lugging and sending surges through the gear sets it’s easy to break the gear teeth. This is a fact of all manual transmission regardless of manufacture.

    • @Mark_Tschetter
      @Mark_Tschetter 3 роки тому

      Why would exhaust temps be an issue on a NA engine? I thought only turbo charged engines had that problem because of drive pressure.

    • @PartoftheMadness
      @PartoftheMadness 3 роки тому +5

      Hello Jake, you will notice that I very specifically mentioned the engine power band when speaking of shift points. Ideally, one should never shock load the drive train or be lugging their engine. I do not doubt that you have seen broken teeth and I am not a dedicated tranny mechanic but I have had numerous gear boxes apart both on my own and in trade school: OD certainly has the smallest main shaft gear but its counter shaft gear is the largest. First gear has the smallest counter shaft gear and the largest main shaft gear, so I do not understand what you mean when you say OD has the smallest gears. Perhaps you can share your thoughts and I can learn as well.
      MarkT, even a naturally aspirated engine can generate enough heat to melt a hole in your piston if you dump enough fuel into it. The owners manuals are very clear on that. If I could post pics here I could show you the metal fatigue on the piston crowns of my 6.9 IDI near where the flame front exits the precup. Combustion chamber temps are what matters, which are directly proportional to exhaust temps. It's just that we can easily measure the last but not the first. I do not recognize the term "drive pressure".

    • @bikingwithcamo5469
      @bikingwithcamo5469 2 роки тому

      I’m going to end this discussion, don’t tow in OD, it puts torsional stress on the countershaft in the vertical direction, thus separating the countershaft from the main. Eventually it willl either wipe the bearings out or cause other issues

    Your dual mass flywheel is completely shot that's why it chatters so bad on take off. If you do not fix this immediately your bellhousing on your transmission will be cracked like a spider web if it isn't already and being a zf 5 speed that means a whole new transmission. I would replace clutch and flywheel with a 1 piece flywheel, the dual mass setup is a P.O.S. the springs go right away. I also hope you have a pyro cause I can tell your pumps turned up probably around 1.5 flats you don't want to touch 1200 F for very long. Many idi's have died because of the lack of a 100 dollar gauge. Treat the old girl with some TLC and she will always get you home.
