By looking at his ribbons (the red one). He was an enlisted anywhere from 9 -12 years. He either wants to be an enlisted with a degree because you see a lot of those people in today's Navy. Now, as an enlisted you have two option. You can either apply for LDO program which you have to be an E6 eligible for selection board to E7 or have a Bachelor degree and apply for OCS program. The Navy have so many programs to allow you to become a Commission Officer in the Navy.
I never got my pin. I wont state my opinions of why not. I had to resign. As the JMO's passed me by I was stuck on the bridge doing TACOM. I have no clue why and nobody cared. I was a LTJG with no pin and I was not going to go to another ship without it. I wish things were different. When I brought my resignation to the captain he had nothing to say. I admire you for achieving SWO. I had to make up for it in other ways in the civilian sector; like earning my masters and achieving a very high level position in IT. God Bless you. At least when I resigned many shipmates said that I would have made a good Naval Officer with future endeavors. I don't play the poilitcal game. I am fair and honest and a gentlemen.
Took a lot of humility to say something like that. I really respect that. I’m currently enlisted applying for this program. I hear a lot of negatives, but I’m truly doing what is necessary to make things happen. Thanks so much for your insight and I pray that you keep shining wherever you go.
Exact same thing happened to me. I was never really trained either, and most bridge watches were simply "Ensigns should be seen and not heard" and my ship had a tradition of calling O-1s "Justin" (Just an Ensign) including by some enlisted people. In today's age, with training guides all over the Internet, I would probably be okay but back then nobody cared, all you had was your PQS book to go by, and nobody ever trained me. I went to another branch of the Navy and excelled, so the Navy and I parted on good company in the end.
Thank you- gives me an idea of what a great prestigious position this..Love the DDG 69 Millius - Love Our Destroyers- America We Are In Great Hands- Thank You Sir, For All You Do. Go Navy
I have some shipmates right now in the STA program. Basically you come in as enlisted and the Navy pays for you to go to school and you get commissioned once you complete your degree.
@RoundenBrown Was just down at USMC base Quantico, I was one of the Staff in H & S company for part of the summer, seemed like half of the officers around there were Mustangs. When I went through Quantico as a candidate we had plenty of prior enlisted men in our platoons as well, idk maybe its different in the Navy.
Question would an engineering degree make me better qualified for being a SWO. Right now I'm a freshmen in NJROTC and plan to join the navy as an officer. I know they like candidates that take advanced math ,science ,and computer classes.
The Navy looks for science and/or engineering backgrounds from SWO Candidates. If you are interested in becoming a Surface Warfare Officer, and since you are still in high school, you should look at the NROTC program: www.navy.com/nrotc
Hi, I'm considering becoming a SWO, but my major would be history. Can I ask how good you have to be in science and math? And the training in your career(SWO) as well(science and math)?
Im fairly certain all you need to have is a degree from a four year college or university with a good gpa, and that technically qualifies you for applying.
@flyinhigher1000 You must receive a Bachelor's Degree. You must also receive a recommendation from a superior to be considered for Navy OCS. OCS = Officer Candidate School that is located in Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island. Over the 12 weeks officer canidates in Leadership, Physical and Military training as well as Academics ranging from Navigation to Shipboard Engineering and Damage Control. Then the candidate is then now commissioned to Ensign.
@flyinhigher1000 He probably enlisted first, because he has many ribbons. If he was an Ensign right out of college, then he would defiantly be a Lt-Com now or pretty close to it.
I am about to graduate with my Finance degree. I want to be a SWO. How will my degree benefit this part of the navy? Will I use what I learned in college in the navy?
I will be heading to Newport, RI for OCS early next year. I will be a SWO. Once on a ship, what divisions can a SWO be assigned to? Some examples were given in the video, but are there more division or a list of divisions to refer to? How are SWOs assigned to a division?
Ugh, if I could have lived another life, I would have been a SWO. 🤔 Grew up with the SOCOM games and the navy simulators from way back. Would have been a thrill of a career.
@flyinhigher1000 The LT might have enlisted after high school and then enlisted. after enlisting, he probably went to college and received his bachelor's. then he was probably recommened for OCS and now is an officer.
+America's Navy Any resource available for Professional Recommendation Board results pertaining to SWO Pro-Rec Y? Trying to get an idea of the current competitive profile.
Matthew Klein You'll need to talk to your Career Counselor and/or reach out to the SWO Community Manager for info www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/officer/communitymanagers/Unrestricted/Pages/SurfaceWarfare%28SWO%29OCM.aspx
What are the best college degrees to earn in preparation for ocs? Are there some degrees better for each officer career. Such as one that would be better for swo. And would NROTC be worth it?
Sorry for the late response; some officer communities have specific degree requirements. Others do not. Intel has specific requirements and is very competitive. SWO doesn't have a degree requirement but does have a GPA requirement. Pilots have neither, if you can fly, we'll give you the chance. NROTC can be worth it. It'll depend on what your degree is, what community you are interested in, and where you are in your college career. Hope this helps.
35 years old is the maximum for Officers, but age adjustments can sometimes be made in instances of previous service. Talk with a Recruiter to discuss your specific situation!
I'm a cadet petty officer 3rd class in my navy jrotc unit in port orchard Washington and I plan to go in the navy, but I want to go to the naval academy and I want to do what my dad does which is "amo" Which means, assistant maintenance officer, or just something along those lines
Hamza Chaudhry Well, then you should check out their website, but you do have to be a citizen of the US. You also need a college degree (which you can get in the UK). There are three ways you can become an officer: OCS (Officer Candidate School), the Naval Academy, and NROTC (Naval Reserve officer Training Corps) OCS is for people who have already graduated from college. Check out their website for info. You need to be a US citizen to apply. People from foreign countries can apply to the US Naval Academy. You should check their website though for specifics on how this would work. You will need to be a citizen however, in order to be an officer. NROTC is for college students. Many colleges have NROTC units. You would need to get into a college here in the US and also apply for a scholarship. You have to be a US citizen in order to get the scholarship. The bottom line is, it far harder to become an officer than to join as an enlisted. YOu have to get your citizenship in order to become an officer. Why don't you join the Royal Navy?
Hey I am going enlisted and was considering making the leap to officer after my second yr, would u happen to know the process that would have to undertake to make that transistion?
USNA.edu I'm in the process of applying now. What grade are you in? If you're a senior, it's pretty much too late, but if you're not: get a varsity letter NOW, get high scores on the SAT and ACT, and apply for NA Summer Seminar when it opens in January. Eagle scout is pretty important, so good work coming from a fellow Eagle. Good luck m8
You can tell he was enlisted by the silver medal worn below his ribbon rack. If it was earned when he was an officer, it would be gold like the surface warfare medal above his ribbon rack.
@Dylan Talley: In addition, LT Allen earned three Good Conduct medals (if you’d taken the time - and developed the knowledge - you could have seen this for yourself), which normally represents at least twelve years of enlisted service (commissioned officers do not qualify for such awards). You might consider researching and thinking before foolishly inquiring.
Skyelar, It honestly doesn't matter. Having a basic understanding of mathematics does help, but you will not use anything from your degree outside the skills of basic computer/microsoft office literacy (particulary word, excel, and powerpoint), and the ability to "google it."
because he was enlisted for at least 12 years. he has 3 enlisted good conduct awards

Thanks so much Sir. I’m looking forward to becoming one 😊
He was enlisted prior to this. My old MPA was a 4 year Lieutenant. If she is still in the Navy, she will be a LCDR very soon.
Oh , that's why he was in 17 years and is an O3
Thanks for making this!

If I minor in engineering, or some technical degree would I still have a good chance to get the job
You can be a SWO with any degree.
@flyinhigher1000
He probably enlisted first, because he has many ribbons. If he was an Ensign right out of college, then he would defiantly be a Lt-Com now or pretty close to it.
How much math and physics is involved in being and qualifying as a S.W.O???? I barely passed non-algebra math in college??
I am about to graduate with my Finance degree. I want to be a SWO. How will my degree benefit this part of the navy? Will I use what I learned in college in the navy?

I'm in the same boat, I got picked up for SWO in the June 2014 board, good luck.

Can I become a SWO through the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD?
Lucas Smith yes
Are you silly?
I'm a US Citizen living in the UK, will the US Navy recognise my qualifications if I get my degree in a UK university?
+Ceasar Aaa You would have to discuss your specific education background with a Recruiter.
***** Science degree is not required. We saw your comment on Instagram and responded there as well

what about work life balance?
how can I join if I live in the uk and what qualifications do I need and can I complete my qualifications the uk
Hamza Chaudhry You have to be a U.S. citizen. If you are not, you have to be living in the United States with a green card.
thank but what qualifications do i need to do in the uk

Abner Doubleday no the us navy

I'm in 9th grade right now, with a 3.95 GPA. Next year I'm going to try out for Varsity tennis.
Coolcool, keep it up. Also, practice the CFA. Joining your cross country team might be beneficial to your run time
What's the CFA, and contact me at: JDbabs1234@gmail.com if you get in.
Thanks, Joe
Candidate Fitness Assessment, and sure
Ohh my cousin just graduated college, this is going to be her title.
Can I become a SWO through NROTC?
Yes
Can you become a SWO through the Naval Academy?
Yes.
Ok. cool. You are one step ahead of me so hey
Been in for 17 years and only a Lieutenant?

Ahhhh SWO’s… the undesignated officer
Are you in the now?
No :/ I'm in the Air Force though ^^
What degree would be best/ most useful for a SWO?
Skyelar Brennan a history or liberal arts degree. Being a SWO requires a lobotomy. Scum of the earth and despicable mouth breathers become SWOs.
Mike Manley, I see you are a fellow fan of Terrence Fitzgibbons.
Skyelar, It honestly doesn't matter. Having a basic understanding of mathematics does help, but you will not use anything from your degree outside the skills of basic computer/microsoft office literacy (particulary word, excel, and powerpoint), and the ability to "google it."
I know it is different with the Navy, but NCO's run the military. Jr. Officers are a wasted uniform for many years of service!
USAFPOLfreak1978 hahah yeah basically jr. officers just get to become boots with a shiny rank.
Unless they are prior enlisted. I think there should be something on the uniform indicating that an officer is prior enlisted.
They do. Good conduct ribbon is enlisted only and so are the silver warfare devices.
