"Lieutenant Junior Grade and I drive submarines for a living"......awesome responsibility. Well done, Mister Andrews! Those who wrote petty comments about ribbons and submarines should be ashamed of themselves for they not what it takes to be a submariner.
No one needs be ashamed. Attention to detail is not unreasonable to expect in an officer in charge of a nuclear reactor that moves. Still, he probably never wears ribbons and had to run to the NEX to get them when they told him he had to wear the khakis for this shoot. I served in a CSG with a SubO and he was an ultra nerd. Very, very smart guy though.
This comment makes me sad and I wish I could shake your hand and say THANK YOU as I look you in the eyes and convey my honest and truthful respects. As a naturalized US Citizen, Im currently bidding for the chance for the U.S. Navy OCS. We in this nation are free due to brave people like you. Thank you!
Cool video: I was an aircraft carrier guy back in the day, which was literally like a city. A sub, on the other hand, is like a village (filled with nuclear ordinance, lol!)…
His National Defense Service Ribbon should be inboard, because it is his highest ranking award. If it were mirrored, it would be on the right side, where his name tag should be. Too bad he didn't catch it..
I just signed my enlistment contact to attend Nuclear Propulsion School! I ship out to Great Lakes on January 5th! Hopefully I'll be the third generation of nuclear submariners in my family.
@@andresflores6296 Thanks for asking-- I did a five year enlistment and I've been out of the Navy for four years now. I got academically dropped from the Nuke ET pipeline but re-rated as a Submarine communications electronics technician (aka "radioman"). Did a couple of years in Washington state on a Seawolf-class SSN, made 2nd class petty officer (ETR2) before I got out, and I have since gone to college and graduate school on the GI Bill. I miss some of the people I met along the way, but definitely not the lifestyle. Overall, I'm glad I did it.
@@herodotus53 thanks for responding to such an old comment! I believe the Navy to be very unique. SWO's have a very intense discipline about them. I was a SWO. I had more SWO's raise their voice at me than Marines did when I was training with marines. Marines are very intense but they just try to toughen you up and then you earn their respect. The strategic and deterring nature of the Navy keeps our nation alive. You can have 1 million soldiers on the ground but without the firepower and presence of the subs and ships everything is useless. Naval staff is not in harms way ever like ground troops are and sometimes they get flack for it but the ships and subs have their back nonetheless.
Holy Crap, this was the boat I was on, the mexican officer was my Division officer, Btw during the part the officers were jet skiing, the enlisted guys who do all the work were prolly ugghhhh....yeah, still working, some times for almost 15 hours straight
I don’t know if this is related, but I will be joining the Navy as a submarine officer after college (2029 graduation year.) will major in physics and minor in Chemistry with an elective of engineering. 1 will also take one year of Calculus and then Calculus based physics. I will then be heading off for RTC training, then start my path.
When things get hot, a foe would be more nervous about having a nuclear-armed sub lingering in its backyard than he would with a jet. Nevertheless, the aviation community (alas the carrier) carries with it a significant influence in the projection of power from the sea.
SECF is the enlisted tech side of subs, Basicly an SECF candidate can go sonar, firecontrol tech, et nav or radio. Its tuff a large majority of the guys here get kicked out. 100% focus is needed ON YOUR JOB at all times.
@paltheon232 Yep, I was just thinking how times have not changed... 'was a Silversides SSN 679 Plankowner nuc and spent way too much time aboard instead of off playin'
talking of finances and usefulness: There is a series, called "Carrier". a documentary, about the USS Nimitz. that ship was deployed to Iraq for several months and it's airplanes didn't drop a single bomb. now THAT was waste of money. Even the pilots were frustrated, because they had nothing to do there. now here we go, the whole country is one big target for an air strike, and U R saying: that armed forces consider it useless and expensive? how about almost daily attacks on the cargo vessels?
Anyone can be a Officer, but not everybody can be a Chief or Chief of the Boat. Just like in the Army we had a saying Officers come and but the Sargeants / Chiefs will always be there to keep unit squared away and teach the Butter Bars IF they listen.
Not everybody can be either. This is America's Navy. We don't need blunt objects, we need precision instruments. Each has a purpose. Case in point, you spelled Sergeant wrong. Go Navy, Beat Army.
These men should know everything there is to know about a Navy Submarine. At approximately what RPM does the sub have to be at in order to kick it upright to allow a special forces team dude to effectively skydive from your boat? The navy has been doing in at least 20' seas since the Vietnam Era. I was told only the top drivers are able to properly preform this particular maneuver.
@aznkent29 The guy is becoming a gentlemen he is just a up and rising officer lets stop arguing and have peace he is fighting for our country and serving his country, so for Christ sake give the guy a break he is protecting use while we are arguing about he is aloud to cuse or not.
@TheAirbornesolider yeah i know that.....but all individuals serving in the military have to abide by the UCMJ....that's where the phrase "an officer and a gentleman" comes from.....
I thought the ensigns and LTJGs that were qualified often served as the OOD/JOOD for a watch or two, hence they, in a way, were/are driving the boat, being the direct representative of the Captain whilst on watch
There is no engagement, because there would have to be 1:1 protection of every large vessel traversing near the Somali coast to and from the Suez Gulf; too expensive and labor-intensive. The US Navy is not sinking pirate vessels because they are small, the ocean is vast and again, you'd have to track them from the time they put in to sea. They are small enough to remain with the "noise" on most radar. Somali pirates are a third-world problem on the backside of the world's only Hyperpower.
@aznkent29 in their case it takes an act of Congress to make them a 'gentleman'... my parents taught me how to be one... I was one of the guys you don't get to see in these videos because they're working, not playing... (an enlisted nuc)
i can't believe the naval officer at 4:16 used "badass".....aren't military officers not supposed to curse like that? isn't that what it's meant to be an officer and a gentleman...

thats why nuke sub officers fit in so well there; they lived in their moms' basements until they joined the Navy, hahaha.
Someone still has to scrub the head, make the meals, type up the reports and take out the trash; and there is no sunlight or fresh air.
Don't what are called "NUBs" do that?
